I'm sure you WERE looking forward to playing me. I am a fun guy to play with. But my PCL deck is FAR from being at the same level as freaking Umezawa's Jitte.
That's one of the reasons I'm taking a bit of a break from the League as well, Alacar. It doesn't seem like anyone but Mr. Stuff, Dave, and a couple of other people ever win, and it's frustrating to always lose no matter what you do. My record isn't exactly stellar, either, and to be honest it bothers me. Probably more than it should. But being consistently beaten by the same people over and over again doesn't help a bruised ego or a flimsy enough opinion of the game being played, so yeah.
It's just not fun right now. I'm hoping that'll change some time soon, but right now...hell no.
I know what you mean. I want it to be fun again, but I don't know how. I'm sure it IS fun for those that are doing well enough, but frankly my deck is starting to feel like this:
Turn 1: Nothing.
2: Nothing. Maybe a land tutor.
3: Almost at Domain.
4: Domain, hopefully. Then I start to get going.
5: A fattie.
6: If I'm not winning then I'm in dire straits, usually.
7: I need to be winning.
etc. etc.

You two aren't the only ones... it just seems no matter what I do I can't seem to beat the top of the heap. Of course my deck's still in development and is definitely a long term project in it's ideal form but I can't say I have a bad base right now - I just need a few more creature threats.

Have you ever done something at work that was so boring that you, having gotten less than the amount of sleep you'd wanted, literally fell onto the desk and snoozed? It happened to me today in the library at work. I really want to be able to use my iPod while I work--if I have music, I'll stay awake and working, and in fact very diligently.
Yes Oh God yes. On more than one occasion. Almost happened once while waiting, of all things, on my name being called for jury questioning proceedings. I'm REALLY glad that one never went to trial.

It is a happy and accepting place to be with good people. Unfortunately this does mean sometimes our problems and issues seem to overpower general conversation.
I'm well aware of that, but I wanna keep the conversation rolling, that's all. I'm sure we can come back to this, but I would like to see more than one topic.
Actually, Kraj is wanting to COMPETE in April! A LOT of judges are!
That is from Dragon Quest/Warrior Monsters, Seph, yeah. It's a spin-off of the original Dragon Quest series that plays like Pokemon. Unfortunately, the best installments in the series never got released anywhere but Japan >_<;;
The actual monsters are all from the canon Dragon Quest series, of course. Just in case anyone else is wondering, the avatar is from a DQ game as well. DQSwords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, yet to be released for the Wii.
@Precon stuff: Josh hasn't been feeling good about it lately, either, to be honest. He pointed out something pretty accurate the other day, actually. From what he sees, the League is big on spikes and people who play like spikes, so other play styles (like my uber Timmy-ness) can't really compete. Thus we have three or four people always on top and everyone else...not.
I believe whenever I play anything, for both myself and my opponent to truly get the most out of the game I have to be as strong as I can. I don't mind losing at all, and relish a well deserved loss...but feel if I play or build sub par strategies then I am cheating myself and my opponent.
Yeah... I don't know why, but for some reason, the PCL brought out the Spike in me. I somehow went from Golgari Deathcreep to this, with a 16-5 record:
It plays aggro while removing blockers with Putrefy and Last Gasp, and if it runs out of steam or the opponent plays bigger guys, the Savage Twister and Eternal Witness play cleanup. Bouncing the Witness with Sparkcaster or the newly added Horned Kavu adds to the insanity. Gleancrawler lets the Solifuges attack every turn if needed. Hit/Run does amazing things by itself.
I had the opportunity at one point to turn the deck into a Shambling Shell/ Deadapult combo deck. I have two Deadapult now. The thing is, although it was fun playing zombies when I tried it, I started losing. Thereafter, I switched back to my aggro/control build. I could have kept on, just playing for fun, but I didn't... and that's what I mean when I say the PCL brought out a little bit of the Spike in me. I'm good at limited - I've placed in the top 8 in my 32 man flight at 6 of the 8 prerelease sealed events I've been to, and twice I've gotten second place. I think that's carried over to my casual game-playing though, and I even find myself sometimes telling my opponent how they could play better - which I'm sure must be annoying at times.
I mean, if you look at the decklists, you can sort of see what is going on. I have Giant Solifuge, Putrefy, Moldervine Cloak. Joyd has Mortify, Fetters, Angel of Despair. Sakura has Jitte, Barter in Blood, Chainer's Edict, and SoFI. We're all using classic constructed level cards and strategies. That's not to say that other people aren't - but say, Alacar's deck, for example, didn't contain very many cards that were like that. The people that are playing "fun" decks aren't faring as well.
I have a suggestion for making the league more fun, if anyone is interested. Start it over as a sealed league, with no special packs. That way, you can't hand pick a precon that has, say, jitte or putrefy or whatever. I think, in a way, the special packs might have contributed to making things a little bit less fun, though I know that wasn't their intention. The whole fun of the league is trying to piece together the exact deck you want through trades and getting lucky with packs.

I dunno...I don't think the special packs have a lot to do with it, to be honest. Well, unless there have been jitte and such handed out in them. I got a playset of Putrefy and two Timbermare from special packs and those are tier 1/tier 2 cards that haven't made my deck any better yet.
I really hate to put it this way, but I think the problem is a diifference between people using "quality" cards and people not using them. I mean, my ideal mono-green deck is built around a bunch of cards people have labelled jank, whereas Dave is running a high-quality Orzhov deck full of consolidated power. I HATEHATEHATE the whole argument of "some cards are just better," because I think it's garbage, but somehow...I've been feeling it since I joined the league. It seems to have turned into a thing where the quirkier your deck-building habits, the less likely you'll ever win.
As much as I'd like to avoid it, maybe a banned/restricted list might help. Although going about it would be tedious and probably cause some fighting. Other than that, I'm not really sure what to do. I just know that if I don't have any fun doing something I won't want to do it, so yeah...
I agree somewhat with Stuffy. Not all precons are created balanced. I took the Rats nest because of Jitte, with Patron being broken in limited and its decent discard and removal swuite leading into a sloid aggro rock build. My plan was to go aggro rock. I disagree totally with the "special packs" idea, it messes the metagame alot. When I took my packs I was hunting very specifica cards and have managed to build a deck that is nearly competetive.
If we do reset, then Sealed is a better choice.
I also think if we restart we should make it Vintage though. We should also limit sideboards to 15 cards, and not the whole collection. I have kept mine to 15.
I really like my deck though, and will miss it if I see it go * ShinSakura hugs her Ink Eyes
A banned/restricted list will be a bad idea, it just creates new cards to be banned after each banning.

So how are all this Coffee Drinkers this evening?Hope everyones doing great.
I dont play MTGO. I've made rants about how MTGO is worse that WoW or EQ because you can't slay ogre's in real life.
If you need any paper cards I'd be will to make a lovely trade. Btw. Call me Evan.
See, I don't really want to restart because I've had to try pretty hard to collect the cards I need for my deck and I'm not even done. I doubt I'd be so lucky a second time, really.
Mr. Stuff, I know you mean well, but to be honest, Special Packs are cool. They are by no means overpowered: I mean, I gave Putrefies, Timbermares, and Groundbreakers to ethersphere and he's still losing. Special Packs do not a winner make; the deck you're building is.
You got a good tricolor combo: RBG. Easy to build for by straddling Planeshift, Ravnica, and Guildpact. Ethersphere has Green, or Green/Black. That has a lot more options open to it, so he explored them much further.
My deck is very limited in scope. Check out the deck as it stands:
It's more like a casual deck than a competitive one by any standard. When's the last time you saw 5 Bringers in a viable constructed deck? The issue is, you went straight to the throat with powerful kill spells and increasing threats. I went for freaking DOMAIN. I am NOT a Spike by any standard. I HATE Prereleases but I go to them anyways. I don't really like Draft except when it's free, and sealed deck isn't very fun for me at all. The player behind the deck can only do so much when he's given jank in comparison to the guy next to him.
So your suggestion is 'make it a sealed deck league'. Well that was the intent, except it offered a little more creativity by giving you a basis. This is good for the non-Spikes out there since we need something to grow on. A Sealed Deck league would scare me to death. I hate the MWS pack-generator with a dirty, dirty passion.
As for a banned/restricted list, that's only going to make people change decks if we do too much, and insult 1 or 2 people if we do too little. AEther Vial, Disciple of the Vault, and Skullclamp are banned; that should be enough.
I agree, precons give us a base to build on, and as new player we are usually directed to a precon to start. You can play right from the box.
Alacar, you really should take the Temple Garden I have and keep offering. I will take something for it later.
You need more Goblets, Engineered Explosives, and more Oracles. The Goblet was the Biggest worry you dropped against me, the rest didn't matter at all by the way.
Maybe find some Worldy Council (draw a card for each basic land type you have)
I have 3 Worldly Counsels--and it's topdeck X, put 1 in your hand and put the rest on bottom. I have 3 Allied Strategies, which draws X, but it costs 5.
I'll take the Garden, but I dunno how much it'll do for me.
About this PCL issue I think part of the point is being missed. I believe ethersphere started at the same time as everyone else or at least very close to the same time. But a lot of the inactives and some of the people that started later (or even changed decks like I did) have less stuff. I think Sakura might be an exception to that rule since he started a week or three after everyone else did but then again he did start with a fairly strong deck.
Indeed part of it has to do with the philosophy of the players too. I was going hard spike aggro during my last build of insanity and I gotta say it served me well. However this time I'm trying to go more of a Johnny-Spike build and it's not doing THAT well even after all these packs. When I win - I BARELY win - and usually only thanks to one card. When I lose I get hammered. The parity of the league is off somewhere.
As for a fix, I'm not sure. Any idea that I seem to come up with seems to blow (e.g. draft special packs by record for the term - horrible because some people are not as active as others).
Resets:
Into sealed league: I'm fine with the idea of it but only if the majority want to do it. I mean my deck isn't done by any means but given that we've only heard from a few that are active in the league I think we might wanna hear from others first before considering this.
Resetting into no special packs: Also fine with this, as the original intent was for this to be a slow tedious process. I'm fine with waiting for my reward.
I do see the purpose of the community card pool that was first presented in Yusuke's version of the league however. This will let people get rid of the flooded market of commons that they couldn't see use for and therefore make collection management easier and to instantly help people who might want to join in late. I've got quite a few commons I don't see myself trading as most people wouldn't want them (I'm lookin at you Gate Hound).
Allied Strategies is a broken card in that deck Alacar. That is the one I meant. You should be running those.
I would recoment Sakura Tribe Elders over Greenseekers. They are better against aggro and removal. Civic Wayfinders are subpar here. You need land in play, not in hand. Wood Elves would actually be better...even if it just gets a Forest (Temple Garden, just reminding you) Solemn Simulacrums if you can find them.
I also have a Rude Awakenning which would be Ideal for you. It beats the decks that kill all your Bringers so easily.
Allied Strategies is too expensive when trying to race against other decks. Worldly Counsel is a little more considerable. If Strategies was an instant we could talk.
....damn you, Coffeehouse. Damn you for getting me back into the league, broken though it is.
Sideboards: I am considering making people reduce it to 15 cards (I'm sure people do anyways). I'm just tired of scouring all of mine for the few I need.
@COGIATI: I took that test a few years back. I got a rank 4 or 5, I think. Anyway, it was interesting, but it was kind of a working design. I think the most relevant questions on the test are about preferences, self-image, and feelings about the self. Sensory tendencies and proficiencies with different skills may or may not have anything to do with gender. As the webmistress even said, the test was purposely designed using criteria based on observed tendencies, coupled with examinations of preferences and self identification. I even think the scale that the test is intended to measure isn't even very accurate - notice that it is meant to be taken by biological makes, and it uses a sliding scale result for scoring. I agree with Joyd in that it's not very scientific.
Quote from Alacar »
By the way, I'm not taking the test. I am, and will always be, male.
I don't think I fit firmly into any clear gender categorization, even those associated as feminine. Nor do I even want to. Tests like that are kind of fun, but not conclusive in any way.
And Alacar, to be honest, even I get tired of taling about and thinking about gender dysphoria and transgenderism, despite my love of explaining and discussing things in detail. For certain, however, you need not ever talk about something here if you don't wish to.
I think it makes sense that Sakura would want to talk about it so much, since this is a very recent emergence for her, and thus is weighing on her mind.
Quote from KoolKoal »
ShinSakura & Lilly: I looked at the test because you curiousitized me. And I have to ask, why do your mental abilities matter when determining your gender? That doesn't make sense to me. Idk, I don't really know much about transexuality.
Supposedly, there are minor differences in neurological preferences. Which traits associated with gender have an instinctual basis are extremely questionable. One of the only strong indications is that adherence to a certain observed gender paradigm has an instinctual basis. In other words, seeing oneself as basically male or female is probably instinctual - but things such as liking pink, watching sports, taking care of kids, and being logical aren't necessarily derived from an instinctual gender.
Huh, I guess that makes sense. I'm a pretty feminine guy myself, but I'm not to the point I think I'm a woman in a man's body. I've always felt basically comfortable with who I am, and I think that's why it seems strange to me. I feel like, if you're (you used in the most broad sense here) more feminine than masculine and you have a man's body, thats just how you are and there's no need to change it your not normal and that makes you better than normal :p. Just my opinion though. I'm not used to discussing this stuff.
This is a common misconception. Transsexuals don't want to change their bodies or appearance because it occurs to them that they are very feminine or masculine, and that it would just make sense, as a matter of course, to transition. No, the transition is something that is desired in and of itself, not because "it would make sense to be a woman because I act femininely."
Quote from Faerie Lord »
Very high (108) Androgyne. Im pretty worried at this point considering i never thought about becoming a female. I usually consider myself class 2 in that ranks but this thing proved me wrong -.-
There's nothing to worry about. Like I said, it's not conclusive in any real way. Besides, even if it were and you are a pretty feminine or androgynous person, that by no means indicates any kind of obligation to change anything about yourself. If people want gender reassignment, it's not because they think they "ought" to have it, based on what makes sense for their behavior. It's because they want it for their own personal reasons. No one is obligated to fit into any kind of gender typology, whether that be in terms of behavior or appearance.
I made a comment in Gaymers about how I once thought I was the only transgender person on this site, and now there are like, six of them that I know of. It's funny how that can happen.
Speaking of which, Sakura, the Gaymers thread might be a good place for yout o share some of htis, as well, since there are not only transgender members, but homosexual members, who might find it interesting. It's the overclan's theme, as you know.
@Precon League: I dunno, I found it very fun at first. I like how it wasn't like constructed, but also not like limited. But some of these decks are just hard to really build a strategy for. I like my decks raw materials but I'm just not sure where I'm going with it. I'd like to go into more detail as to what about the League is troubling people, but it's so hard to pinpoint. Perhaps instead of special bonus packs, we could just get an extra booster pack. The boosters are really where it's at, I think. It's just hard to get the cards you want. And if you end up changing your build and needing new cards, it's harder to make any changes because you have start hunting all over again.
@Evan: In a few months? Well, that sure seems to be very soon. I hope it goes well, to be sure. Have you discussed any of that with your parents, I wonder?
I worry about taking hormones. I really wish I could have started that process back when I was nineteen, which was one of the hardest times in my life for me. It was also when I was in therapy, and would have had a good means of introducing the topic to my parents.
The notion of transitioning, in any capacity, has never been something that excites me. It always seems to just be a tremendous burden. I don't want to have to worry about those kinds of things. But I do know that something needs to change.

@update: I had a somewhat miserable day at work. We had a trainee, whom my brother had to tend to, so I ended up having to do a lot of the work along with only the two managers (three people, when five people are actually needed). Near the end of the day, a corporate officer from Taco Bell came to do some kind of audit, so everyone was a bit on edge. I'm glad I got out of there.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.
That would imply that we should keep with the current B/R rules in place.
I really would love the league to change to a vintage one though... It's so much more interesting to play.
Saying Vintage implies using the Vintage BR list...otherwise I would have said Freeform or somesuch.
The cool thing about using the Vintage list, is that alot of the cards in the older sets are awful...so if someone grabs a set looking for the good ones they wind up with more unplayable stuff overall. The commons in earlier set that are worth playing are often rather strong (bolt) which gives weaker players a chance at easy to attain stronger spells mind you.
To get Mana Drains for instance, you have to wade through the bum crevace that is Legends :-P

2 Aquastrand Spider
1 Horned Kavu
1 Llanowar Dead
2 Eternal Witness
2 Shambling Shell
2 Giant Solifuge
1 Sparkcaster
1 Lavaborn Muse
2 Streetbreaker Wurm
2 Golgari Rotwurm
1 Gleancrawler
1 Darigaaz, The Igniter
2 Farseek
1 Into the North
4 Putrefy
2 Last Gasp
2 Savage Twister
1 Fires of Yavimaya
1 Moldervine Cloak
1 Fatal Frenzy
1 Hit/Run
1 Scatter the Seeds
It plays aggro while removing blockers with Putrefy and Last Gasp, and if it runs out of steam or the opponent plays bigger guys, the Savage Twister and Eternal Witness play cleanup. Bouncing the Witness with Sparkcaster or the newly added Horned Kavu adds to the insanity. Gleancrawler lets the Solifuges attack every turn if needed. Hit/Run does amazing things by itself.

I dont play MTGO. I've made rants about how MTGO is worse that WoW or EQ because you can't slay ogre's in real life.
If you need any paper cards I'd be will to make a lovely trade. Btw. Call me Evan.
6 Forest
3 Island
3 Swamp
3 Mountain
3 Plains
3 Terramorphic Expanse
Creatures
3 Greenseeker
2 Civic Wayfinder
1 Etched Oracle
2 Draco
1 Bringer of the Black Dawn
1 Bringer of the Green Dawn
2 Bringer of the Blue Dawn
1 Bringer of the Red Dawn
1 Clearwater Goblet
1 Exotic Disease
3 Exotic Curse
1 Fact or Fiction
3 Farseek
1 Global Ruin
1 Infused Arrows
1 Planar Despair
1 Terminate
4 Tribal Flames
1 Wandering Stream

Maybe find some Worldy Council (draw a card for each basic land type you have)
I'll take the Garden, but I dunno how much it'll do for me.

After some major editing:
1 Temple Garden
5 Forest
3 Plains
3 Island
3 Swamp
3 Mountain
Creatures
1 Bringer of the Black Dawn
1 Bringer of the Green Dawn
1 Bringer of the Blue Dawn
1 Bringer of the Red Dawn
2 Civic Wayfinder
1 Etched Oracle
2 Greenseeker
2 Sakura-Tribe Elder
1 Eternal Witness
1 Silkwing Scout
1 Clearwater Goblet
3 Exotic Curse
1 Fact or Fiction
3 Farseek
2 Last Stand
1 Planar Despair
1 Terminate
4 Tribal Flames
1 Wandering Stream
1 Breath of Darigaaz
1 Canopy Surge
1 Dismantling Blow
1 Fire/Ice
3 Orim's Thunder
1 Treva's Charm
3 Worldly Counsel
....damn you, Coffeehouse. Damn you for getting me back into the league, broken though it is.
Sideboards: I am considering making people reduce it to 15 cards (I'm sure people do anyways). I'm just tired of scouring all of mine for the few I need.

You actually have some pretty stupid sick cards Fire // Ice??!!
I'd drop Wandering Stream for Allied Strategies still.
That'd be cool with me. Your joining, I mean. Not that I agree that you;d have pathetic plays.

Woohoo, They let me take my vacation early. I dont have to work Friday or Saturday this week, and lead right into a week off.
I love how supportive my bosses are being. I told them the issues I am having at work and they understood.
