I want to give a special shout out to Shadowfox for playing a few games with me. Thanks, 'fox! Especially for the last one where we brought out casual decks. It really helped me take my mind off things.
Speaking of which, I'm still having trouble accepting the fact that my friend is gone... I just spoke to him a few days ago. *sigh*
Anybody else wanna play a game? Even if it's just casual, I don't care. PM me if you want to.
Edit: Dang, I'm moping again. I need to stop this. I'm trying to remember all the good things... But it's hard.
Classic Science Fiction of the Week : The Day the Earth Stood Still
A true classic of Sci-Fi which has had its impact in more ways we can count. It is so ingrained in our popular culture that people often quote or pay homage to quotes and symbolism from this movie without realizing it as they quote or pay homage to other media. A prime example is the phrase "Klaatu barada nikto" from Army of Darkness, heavilly qouted in popular culture due to the cult popularity of the movie. This phrase itself is a homage to The Day the Earth Stood Still and the phrase "Klaatu verada nikto".
The movie starts in what was then modern time (1951), man has started harnessing the power of the atom. A flying saucer appears and lands and a man shaped being (Klaatu) appears, and a skittish military grunt shoots him when he presents an unknown item (which turns out to be a gift for the President). A giant of a robot (Gort) appears and destroys all present weapons. Klaatu is taken to the hospital.
Klaatu makes a plea to see all world leaders with a pressing message for all men of Earth to hear. Bickering between world leaders makes this impossible and Klaatu is detained. He escapes and decided to study humanity by living among them and moves into an apartment. Here he befriends a human boy and his mother (Helen). He impresses the urgency of his mission upon a prominent scientist who puts together a meeting of the top scientists in the world. He asks Klaatu to make an example to get the attention of the world to better present his case.
Klaatu disables all electrical power in the world for exactly one half hour. This includes even the electrical portion of automobiles so that they will not run, but he leaves airborn planes and hospitals active. The military steps up their manhunt for him and he is shot and killed while trying to get to his ship. Helen goes to the spaceship and says the famous phrase to stop Gort from destroying humanity. Gort takes her into the ship then retrieves Klaatu's body and revives him.
Klaatu tells the world that the worlds in the universe had come together ages ago and created guardians like Gort as policement with the job of destroying anyone who acted out in violence. He explains that Earth's discovery of atomic power is what prompted his visit as a warning. Atomic power is a marvelous thing, but to use it as a weapon is seen as a threat against all sentient beings in the universe. If man does not learn how to drop its violent activities and takes atomic weapons into space, and army of guardians like Gort will reduce Earth to ash.
The obvious message is that mankind is too quick to distrust and too prone to war. Very important message even today, probably moreso than when it was written. What people miss is the bigger message hidden within the movie. Throughout the movie we see and hear people listenning to radio and television and reading newspapers full of opinionated negative and unfounded information on the "Alien Invasion". Right at the landing site where people can see the ship plain as day, a newpaperman walks by people go crazy to by newspapers. The true message of this movie is how easily society is warped by media.
This movie shows how man in the majority is a group of easily manipulated sheep who seem to have no real ability to make his own decisions. We soak up whatever is fed to us with no ability to discriminate between different sources. This is also crucial as a parralel in todays age, and is in fact worse. People are generally more prone to try and look for answers now, but they really do not put effort into this and still accept most of what is fed to them. Our society is built on fear and distrust of what is different with the things we are allowed to accept fed to us by the media. Even the modern idea of political correctness and tolerence is a victem here, while media preaches it it does not teach understanding. An ignorant sheep is still an ignorant sheep if he only accepts his son is gay because a TV show tells him he should.
It is ironic that a movie warning us about the media has been itself so ingrained and perferated into media and pop-culture that the original message is completely lost to catchy pop-culture references.
Hey, Mr. Stuff? The sig-line isn't exactly a joke, my friend.
On another note, have I said anything about my car? No? Didn't think so.
Recently, my 13-14 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee has been acting up. So we brought it into the shop to be checked out for the first time in several years. All the repairs costed $1000 on Friday (a low price for what was going on.) By monday (the day we were supposed to pick it up) the repairs were costing $2600 and would be done the next day. It's now Wednesday, and tomorrow is the day. Please, please, PLEASE let it be done tomorrow.
Yay i just won round 5 in the legacy tournament 2-0 against UW fish. I need to win one more round then i still have a chance to place in top 8 or close to it. My work day went pretty well but im pretty tired right now lol. Ill be on aol messenger and msn later tonight if anyone wants to talk to me if not see you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone* Have a great day tommorrow everyone!
Good God Scott! A phone call would have been better in which to respond. Only have a few minutes, so just can't get into it. Are you into hormone treatments, and surgery?!! Does this mean you don't want to appear at the party? I have no idea how your siblings will react. Do you want me to tell them? For back-up, have you been diagnosed by medical people, is this for certain, and not just a fancy? I am quite certain most of my extended family would accept your change, be surprised, but accepting. I can't speak for the Andersons. Have to get to work. Let me know if you want me to discuss this with anyone else yet.
awww im so sorry sakura. i really hope everything goes the way it is meant to be for you. I think you should be able to make your own decisions though because you are 31 and your a grown up adult but we will always respect what you do. We all love you sakura! *hugs sakura*
Sakura: Wow, I don't think that's a bad response. It sounds to me like she really doesn't understand exactly what's happening and she's only heard what other people say about transexuals. It seems to me like she's ready to exept it though.
I'd like to know what you think though, because you obviously know your mother better than me.
Well, no matter what happens next. I look up to you for sending that email. Very brave :).

I'll bet you wish you had a non-unglued/unhinged card that shared your first name.
@shin...errr...sakura Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it sounds like they''ll be accepting of it. Here's hoping.
Wow...alot of bad vibes floating around lately. I almost feel guilty being as happy as I am. Here's something that should at least give ya'll a chuckle. I dare you to not smile.
Hey, Mr. Stuff? The sig-line isn't exactly a joke, my friend.
LOL. May I recommend Utawarerumono? The main character gets transported to a world where everyone has animal ears and a tail.

Wow. Join the party, eh? I don't know what it is about this week, but it just sucks. A LOT. T_____T
Good that you're getting along with the folks, Sakura. As I think Crimson said tho, a phone call would be good. That way you can answer any questions she has without having to guess at what they are.
I'm feeling better about my friend, I guess. I'll miss him. If they have a funeral (my other friend said the departed's parents would probably pull the plug, since he's brain-dead), I will definitely try to go to that. I feel like that would help me say goodbye to him in a more definite way.
Oh, and thanks, Alacar, for playing a few games with me. I'm going off to play Silent Prophet now.
grrr.... MWS ****ing bites. I had just cast a Calciderm and had removal in my hand for any threats. Mr. Stuff had no creatures out, and I also had a 2/1 and a 2/2. And it lost connection. Did I mention the match was tied 1-1? It's all good, though. We decide to reply the third game. I start with a decent hand...and my computer restarts by itself.
Good news is that my deck is starting to look good. I'll be up for a lil bit yet, if anyone wants to try to play.:-/
NO one finds my avvy/custom/sig too offensive, do they?
Sakura, I meant that I hope you can get everything ironed out and cool. I didn't think she didn't accept you. I just agreed that she was right in saying a phone call would've been a little better.
Yeah im very sorry as well Sakura. Well im glad that everything is working out great for you and as always i wish for the best for you Sakura. You have always been a great friend and also a pretty unique rogue deck builder as well in my opinion.
Ill be on aol and msn if anyone wants to talk to me see you all soon! Have a great night and have a great day tommorrow everyone! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*
Sakura - It sounds like your mom took the news as well as you could hope for. Naturally she'd be a little startled, but her response seemed very positive.
Mr. S - Wow, I'm very sorry to hear about your friend.
I am very sorry about your friend as well mr stuff. He will always will be remembered in your heart though. *hugs mr. stuff again* I hope your having a great week so far mr. stuff and have a great day tommorrow as well!
@Sakura: I don't see that reply as bad at all. It doesn't seem like a "What? You're what???" at all. Besides knowing responses if she was gonna get pissed at you most people would do it over the phone unless they're in a rush. Even then the tone is all wrong for it to be bad. So I think it could be quite OK once you explain everything out. Sure the:
For back-up, have you been diagnosed by medical people, is this for certain, and not just a fancy?
seems a bit snobbish but that sounds more uneducated than anything else. As for the Andersons, if they can't accept you for who you are they can just stuff it, IMO. And that's putting it politely.
I hope for your friend, Mr. Stuff. I haven't had to deal with the loss of a friend to death, and I hope I never will.
On another note, 10 Nai points to the first person who knows what Laputa is WITHOUT USING A SEARCH PROGRAM! -10 points to whoever uses the Spanish translation of the word with a space in the middle.
@ Mr. Stuffed Oreos
Someone I was very close to died in an accident in March of last year. If they had survived, they would have been a vegetable their entire life. So while I don't know exactly what you are going through, I think I can contribute a lil bit. If I prayed, you and everyone else affected would be in my prayers. I just need to figure out the whol Freewill vs Divine Preordination thing out first so I know whether or not something is listening to my prayers.
Mr. Stuff-It's truly sad to hear about your friend. I hope you can continue to cope well with such a loss. I know how hard it is, and it really takes a lot out of someone having just seen the person recently. *Hugs*
Nai- La Puta is the ***** in Espanol. I promise I didn't look it up, since it was my favorite word to call one girl I knew in high school. I was evil, but she hated me for no reason.
Sakura-I'm glad things are going so well with people's acceptance. It's quite surprising from what I know.
Mr. Stuff, it is very sad news about your friend. It's always a big deal, in my eyes, when someone I know (or someone who is close to someone else I know) passes away. That's no small thing, and it creates ripples in the lives of all those that person was in contact with. I wish to extend to you my honest sympathy, for whatever it is worth. And I like what you had to say about him; it's important to have that kind of farewell, and I'm glad it helped you feel better.

I am walking death A visage of distortion Twisted by memory This dead flesh hangs And it reeks of confusion And contorts and twists My lumpy missmatched form
I am talking sense With a vocal intrusion Haunted by history My resolve stands Behind this one conclusion And I don't resist My curvy dreamsent form
I really liked this poem, especially the last stanza. It's very clean and assertive, with evocative and interesting diction. And yet, it's also somewhat abiguous, open to interpretation.
I would love to have something Written by Mamelon, she is the best writer here I believe. I do not know if she does poetry though. At the very least I was going to ask her to do a forward for the book when it is done.
Are you ok with that Mammie?
Well, I guess I'd be okay with that. But why do you think I'm a good writer? I feel pretty nervous about letting people read stuff I've written. I've gotten compliments on it, true, but I also have some flaws, some of which may or may not be major and I may or may not have really unlearned yet.
Truth be told, I don't think I'm very good at poetry. But I don't do it much. Also, much of the poetry I end up interested in may strike others as weird or extravagant. Photon's better at than me, I'd say. Prose seems to feel more natural for me. Though I think I may be getting better, especially as my prosaic style gains an element of concise symbolism, capable of expressing the depth of emotion I want to convey. Maybe I just have to practice it.
That is very sweet Alacar hun. I wish someone would write poetry for me. All my life I have wanted flowers and poetry, got flowers once....I was so happy.
That's sweet. I'd love to get flowers sometime, too.
@postcount: I care about my postcount! One time it was 2,222, and I found that to be neat. However, it did eventually become 2,223. Ah, well. I like the number 4, so I look forward to when I can get 4,444. That's four fours! It's like, squared, or something. Symmetry. The essence of beauty!

You know? I generally don't care much for amateur poetry

It sounds like she took it really well. It's certainly good news! And I'm sure she'll have an easier time adjusting to this after you've had some time to clarify some things to her, not only about your plans, but your needs and feelings.
@Silent Prophet: That video is cute and scary at the same time.
And may I ask what is up with your avatar/banner theme?

All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.
I'm sorry Dreia, but you just lost 10 Nai points. I want the actual reference, not the Spanish translation. Somehow, I don't expect anyone but Omna and/or Mr. Stuff to get this.
I'm back from work, so I'll get your packs to ya
