True enough. I do the same with other japanese things I am a fan of actually. I still call the Mana series Seikendensetsu for instance.
Though I refer to Garoudensetsu as Fatal Fury most of the time.
In street fighter, I usually ignore the names of the renamed characters completely and use the tournament slang Claw, Boxer and Dictator.
I refer to the series as Seiken Densetsu, also, because THAT'S WHAT IT'S FREAKING CALLED.
Secret of Mana, my ass. I'll tell you what the secret of Mana is- the secret is that's it's called Seiken freaking Densetsu. That, and the Girl is a ***** in MC Hammer pants.

Seiken Densetsu can be translated as Legend of the Holy Sword, which is certainly a more appropriate title for the series.
Meanwhile, Dragon Quest's name change came not from arbitration, but necessity, as TSR held the legal rights to the name Dragon Quest at the time DQ hit American shores in the late 80s.

About this whole American english thing v Japanese true translation: WTF? Did the geekery get that picky? IMO, regarding Dragon Quest v Dragon Warrior, they're both right. It's not like the sequels would get misnumbered nor were any of the games in the series get messed up by this way...
Edit: Like Photon said - its all localization with this one...
Seiken Densetsu is another thing altogether. I much prefer Secret of Mana but only because I refuse to recognize the crap that became Final Fantasy Adventure as a part of this series. It's like the black sheep of this family... Go ahead... stone me for it.

How can it be the black sheep of the family? It was the very first one in the series. It didn't "become" FFA, FFA (or, the original Seiken Densetsu) became Secret of Mana, or Seiken Densetsu 2. To call it the black sheep is unfair and a little erroneous, considering it did pretty well for an early generation GB RPG. Comparitively, it is awful, but so is ANY given early RPG series when you look at its originals in comparison to its later entries. I mean, FF1 is buggy as hell, poorly contrived, and it completely lacks both a whiney hero and a girl with "talent", and yet it's hardly the black sheep in the series- it IS the series! I think the same could be said of the original Seiken Densetsu. Granted, a GB RPG from that era is probably pretty poor in comparison to something from the SNES era on, but at the time it was much better than most of your choices of RPGs for that platform.
Or are you saying you prefer the title Secret of Mana when given the choice between that and Final Fantasy Adventure? Because that makes sense.
And yes, I did get that picky. I've seen people nearly come to blows over whether Cecil's companion in FFIV is named Kain (Caen) or Kain (Cayn). So this is nothing.
Did not know the TSR thing.
Too bad, then TSR could have sued them which could have roundabout led eventually to a Dragon Quest Magic set.
Our special deck in legacy is our very own Coffee-Finement deck! Me and Alacar made the deck of course.
This decks main purpose is to lock down with life from the loam and Solitary Confinement which is excellent against the big three decks in legacy threshold, goblins, and solidarity. But... wait thats not all it also has alot of discard to make it alot more hate resistant in the format. The deck also has quite of bit of creature removal to deal with alot of aggro decks in the metagame. I'll explain the card choices so you will get a better feel of the deck. I admit the deck still needs to undergo hours of playtesting but it has been doing pretty well in my testing so far. Without further do here is the deck.
Mishra's Factory: Mostly provides an steady clock on your opponent when needed. Also can add mana when needed obviously.
Barren moor, tranquil thicket, and Secluded Steppe: These cycling lands can provide efficient card draw combined with life from the loam especially during the mid to late game. Also they can negate the drawback from the Solitary confinement and also can take advantage of dredge from loam or grave-shell scarab.
Windswept Heath: The ability to either fetch for a scrubland, bayou, forest, and plains can often be important against any deck that runs wastelands.
Polluted delta: Pretty much the same as heath except it fetches swamps instead of the other two basic lands.
Basic Lands: Making the deck more viable against non-basic land hate is big nowadays in the legacy metagame.
Spectral Lynx: Making it have protection from green can help alot versus UGW or UGWR threshold gro since all or most of their threats are green. Also able to block and regenerate can be a big activated ability against aggro in general.
Eternal Witness: Able to bring back a much needed utility card like a creature removal spell or even discard is often a optimal ability in the format.
Grave-shell Scarab: An excellent win condition and also can be used as a chump blocker in the mid to late game. Also combined with the ability to draw massive cards with loam and cycling lands you can easily bring grave-shell scarab back by dredging. Also scarab can dodge any kind of spot removal and mass removal spell in the format. The ability of letting you draw a card as well can also be useful down the stretch of games.
Exalted Angel: Can provide as another win condition but most importantly Exalted angel can have you gain life which is highly recommended against any aggro deck of the format like threshold, goblins, affinity, and etc.
Eternal Dragon: This creature is basically an win-more and ulitity card all in one. Able to fetch a scrubland and/or a plains is always a good plan so your able to play confinement or cast a swords to plowshares when needed. THe ability to bring it back to your hand can also make Dragon a versatile threat during the late game.
Mox Diamond: Mana acceration can help alot against combo decks like iggy pop and solidarity. Able to play multiple discard spells a turn earlier can be a big key to winning the combo match.
life from the loam: obviously a must utility card in this deck. The ability to bring back cycling lands, fetchlands, and other lands is a great way to make the drawback of the confinement alot more affordable.
Solitary Confinement: An all-around utility card against the big three decks in the format and also great against most other decks as well from aggro to combo decks.
Swords to plowshares: The best creature removal spell hands down.
Cabal therapy: Excellent synergy with eternal witness and can be great with duress especially against decks like solidarity and iggy pop.
Hymn to tourach: A great bomb discard spell against any deck in the format except maybe UG madness.
Vindicate: A pretty efficent removal control spell considering its a versatile card on its own being able to remove almost anything from play can definetly be useful.
Innocent Blood: great against reanimator decks and great at stopping nimble mongoose and also first turn goblin lackey as well. Plus when you fetch false prophet with living wish you can make basically cast blood and sac your prophet which will be useful against threshold and goblins.
Duress: great discard spell against control and combo decks especially.
Living Wish: The ability to gain access to the creatures in your graveyard is definetly an optimal uility ability in alot of matchups.
Loaming Shaman: Great way to bring back all of your cards that you dredge from loam and grave-shell scarab.
Withered wretch: Good against reanimator, threshold, iggy pop, and alot of other decks that utiliize their graveyard to gain card advantage on you.
Necravolver: Can be used as another win condition and more importantly can gain life for you when needed which will be highly useful against any aggro deck in the legacy metagame.
Wrath of god: Great card against threshold and goblins and also able to cast wrath of god a turn earlier with mox diamonds can often be a great asset to have when playing those matchups.
Pernicious Deed: Probably the best universal board clearer in the game.
Well I hope you all enjoyed reading Legacy of the week and stay tuned until next saturday for another exciting legacy deck in the coffeehouse! Well see you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*
Awesome review and deck Cecilia. Added note, Eternal Dragon is like an expensive Squee in a pimch if needed. Speaking of which, I would add either a Squee or a Dragon to the sideboard. Also, A Mikokoro in either the main or side is solid with Confinement as well.

More or less you hit the nail on the head there. Yes, black sheep is probably a bad term to use for it... I did mean the one least liked out of the family of Seikens. I believe the GBA Seiken might be gaining on that from all the complaints I hear against that one, however.
The key was more or less how well it kept over time... and I guess it just DIDN'T as opposed to some other GB games.
@Kevin: Nice deck! But also more proof Legacy needs more Trample.

The GBA remake is an odd duck. I liked it when I played it, but it really lacked the complexity and depth I thought I had come to expect from the series... or at least it did until I played SD2 again. Then I was like "Oh wait, this game is surprisingly short and not really that complex, either!" It's just when I last played it, I was 13 and sucked at anything that didn't involve jumping on koopas.

@crimson and shin': Thanks for the comments. Yeah the deck still needs some work though considering i still die against goblins about 50 percent of the time but thats because mws can be pretty weird when it comes to its shuffling engine. Any suggestions is always welcome on the deck though. Anyhow see you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*
@Children's books: I like children's books. However, even a great book can be made into an awful movie if the acting and directing are poor.
@X-Men 3: The whole Phoenix component was a let down because I was hoping it would be at least somewhat similar to the real Phoenix storyline. I've always liked Phoenix and I liked that story arc, and as open to variation as X-Men is, I didn't like how grossly they distorted it.

My genious best friend that got perfect grades in everything got a 31 (but beat me on the SAT), and another one of my friends got a 32 because he aced the science part. Speaking of street fights, by the way- who would win in a street fight: Oprah Winfrey, or Angeline Jolie?
I feel like Angie is probably in better shape and has better combat training, but you know that Oprah wouldn't be playing fair. Furthermore, you would never know when Dr. Phil and Rachel Ray would pop out of a dark alley and flank you from behind while Oprah applied her pranabindu training.
Angelina's a fast, strong hero, but Oprah has a lot of contacts, not to mention her command of dark sorcery. Angelina could get the upper hand over her, but Oprah would probably try to preempt it and disable her attacks before she became a threat.
Quote from Kraj »
I feel exactly the same way. I was rather unimpressed by the first one but it grew on me and now I really like it. I guess I just have really high expectations for anything that says "X-Men" on it.
Oh, me too.
If the fight occured on a populated street, though, you know damn well every woman within a half mile will be rushing in to defend Oprah, ultimately resulting with Jolie being drawn and quartered by a mob of soccer moms.
I dunno, Angelina is apparently very attractive to people of all sexes. Perfect blend of masculinity and femininity. Such a role model for all of us, especially me!

I'm not saying that. I'm saying that as an "average reader", your tastes are questionable, considering you prefer stories where kids spend several episodes fighting each other to become ninja in between being slashed together in fanfiction.

A deck I am thinking of running tomorrow (before anyone says otherwise, I know Karakas Cannot bounce the Reality Acid (when it is legendary), but everyone here seems to think it can hit non-creatures so I am using it anyways because they refuse to believe otherwise.
Need to remove one card from the sideboard, not sure what.
The Life from the Loam might become a Crop Rotation.
Want a Stroke of Genius or Braingeyser but own neither. They are great win conditions with either of the infinite mana setups I have.
May look random at first, but for my meta it should be solid
No Wastelands, not enough people run non-basics. I may stick one or two in after I playtest and see how the Mana Base works.

Neat deck shin' it looks like alot of top vintage decks anyhow in serious competition. I personally think the more random the deck is the better especially in vintage but this looks like it has a realistic winning goal and also as well being random but alot of vintage decks are random in my opinoin even the top ones.

Hey guys. It seems like no one is on right now. I guess everyone has busy Saturdays. Well I just got back from my track meet, which went pretty well. I ran the 600, the 1600, and the 3000, and let me tell you, that is tough to do 3 hard races in one day. But the 3000 was just a workout that my coach wanted me to do, so it wasn't so bad. No, the thing I was proud of was my 600 time, which was 1:30. That is a 2-minute 800, which is really fast. Anyway, that was my day, how was/is everyone else's?
@Mr. Stuff: Yeah, we have a lot of smart people here, it seems. Maybe it is like what Kraj said, that Magic players tend to be more intellectually minded, or it could be that we are all nerds that have no other friends or things to do other than hang out here :p.

Cecilia

Cecilia
@X-Men 3: The whole Phoenix component was a let down because I was hoping it would be at least somewhat similar to the real Phoenix storyline. I've always liked Phoenix and I liked that story arc, and as open to variation as X-Men is, I didn't like how grossly they distorted it.
Heh heh. I know.
Over the years, I have often had to remind myself of this with people. Especially with customers, such as in my current job. It's a challenge.
"Dress up time!"
Cool job! Did you enjoy it?
That's cute. "I christen you 'Kitty.'"
Angelina's a fast, strong hero, but Oprah has a lot of contacts, not to mention her command of dark sorcery. Angelina could get the upper hand over her, but Oprah would probably try to preempt it and disable her attacks before she became a threat.
Oh, me too.
I dunno, Angelina is apparently very attractive to people of all sexes. Perfect blend of masculinity and femininity. Such a role model for all of us, especially me!

It is if you insist on commenting on other's tastes. Actually, I'm kidding. I don't like it, but as always with entertainment, it's a big game of "to each his own."
Were you even alive when it came out?
I'm gonna have the image of Oprah Winfrey screaming "COUNTERSPELL!" while surrounded by a corona of blue light all afternoon
Best way to settle the matter.
IMO Oprah's aged a lot better than Angelina probably will. So let's check back in about 20 years and see.
Are you serious? If the two of them are allowed to wage war over 20 whole years, the resulting radiation would lead the end of all other life on Earth!
I'm talking about Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu, which came out on the original Gameboy.
I'm not saying that. I'm saying that as an "average reader", your tastes are questionable, considering you prefer stories where kids spend several episodes fighting each other to become ninja in between being slashed together in fanfiction.
Faerie Lord, are you an adult woman?
I like Naruto, too, though.

She's just lulling you into a false sense of security so I can get you while you sleep. Trust not the Rose Bride, child, for she is a witch.
Well, I'm wanting to leave the house, but I am literally boxed in by all sorts of trucks and cars. I absolutely hate this. Rude *****es. I hope they all get cramps.

See you all soon! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*

I just got back about 2 hrs ago from my first driving course. 3 more to go (for 8 hours every saturday), plus 6 hours driving in a student driver car. As well as taking the State written exam and having my driving exam in the last hour of that 6, and I'll finally have my license.
Sorry I've missed all the conversation. I skimmed through some of it.
Whee! Legacy of the Week will be added as a Weekly staple. Evan, we still need you to do Movie of the Week.
Speaking of which, Regular of the Week and Geek Mp3 will, chances are, come tomorrow. Since it'll be sunday and all.
Tnisk and Future Vision will come out soon, as I've swore to myself to get it out while I'm on SPRING BREAK! I'll have the next 6 days off, then saturday's course, then sunday, before I get my nose back to the grindstone full time at school/work/driver's ed... whew. I've had a long, long week.

Card interactions
Leyline of Singularity : Makes weenie aggro decks slightly handicapped, and enables alot of tricks. Karakas and Minamo are good examples. While Karakas does not normally hit non-creatures, as I stated earlier it is assumed here that it does. This creates the Following interactions.
Karakas+
1x Eternal Witness
3x Reality Acid
1x Tivadar of Thorn
1x Gilded Drake
1x Uktabi Urangutan
3x Mangara of Corondor
Karakas already works well with Mangara, also lets you save alot of things your opponent tries to kill.
Minamo+
3x Mangara of Corondor
1x Krosan Restorer (This creates infinite mana, and card draw)
1x Mikokoro, Center of the Sea
I also run the Crucible/Fastbond/Zuran Orb combo since it is reletively easy to assemble and the Crucible was already at home here.
Will try and find a place for Balance in here likely.
I ran a Singularity based deck ages ago and dominated with it, this should do well here.
@Mr. Stuff: Yeah, we have a lot of smart people here, it seems. Maybe it is like what Kraj said, that Magic players tend to be more intellectually minded, or it could be that we are all nerds that have no other friends or things to do other than hang out here :p.
@Evan: Wow, you got a 33 also, that's amazing. Congrats on that score, that is really good. And an early good luck to you on the SAT's. I think we will probably have the same essay question and everything since we're taking it on the same day.

No lunar eclipse for me. Nothing but solid cloud cover.
My girlfriend and I saw Bridge to Tarabithia last night. It was excellent. It's been about 15 years since I read it, but everything was kept true except for minor updates to the time period.us Totally worth seeing.
