Kraj is correct in that there really aren't any parts of the brain that aren't used. Everyone uses every part of their brain at some time, for some task. But most people don't use all the parts of their brain in all the ways that they could, or as often as they could.
The convention that people only use 10% of their brain is a misconception if the reality that the mind/brain has capabilities that often go unutilized. It's if the brain has so much potential power, and most people only like 5% or 10% of that power.
If anyting, using more "brain power" would involve neural functioning becoming more synergistic, with parts of the brain being utilized for more tasks, rather than additional areas of the grey matter actually coming into use. Does that make sense?
No it doesnt really make sense I shouldnt of type of what i did about brain power anyway so nevermind of what i said... I feel dumb talking about it in the first place..
@shin: hello shin i dont think we met my name is Kevin but you can call me Cecilia if you want. Welcome back to the coffeehouse and enjoy yourself here! Its a honor to meet you too shin.
Love,
Cecilia
Anyone who introduces themselves as Kevin but says I can call them Cecilia is awesome in my books
@Shin: Hrmmm. For some reason it's just not coming to me. I want to say something like Fist of the North Star or Akira, but neither of those sound right... I'll probably think of it later and then :foreheadslap: for not thinking of it sooner.
You're welcome, Strongbad! I've also made a funny Teen Girl Squad banner, if you're interested
I can attempt a good HSR banner.. I don't mean for it to be a contest with Mr. Stuff, but it's interesting--he's a better shopper, but I'm a bigger fan
here it is:
Shin: I was thinking Fist of the North Star, but this post was too slow. I like that show
Cecilia: It's not dumb at all to bring that up--it's a common misconception, it's just misread. If a human being's brain were consolidated into a more organized, logical organ, like a computer, then it probably would only take up 10% of the average human's cranium.

@Mr. Stuff: I have always wanted to see Ranma 1/, for reasons that are probably obvious.
Interesting thing is, cognitive and neural efficiency is often a measure of how few neural areas are recruited/required to perform an action. For instance, functional MRI and PET studies of the brain show that normal people use a small part of their temporal lobe for remembering and reciting a list of words or numbers; but people with brain damage, autism, or ADHD may show huge areas of the parietal, temporal, and frontal lobes lit up trying to achieve the same result. The gist of any such studies is, that people with cognitive impairments tend to use more glucose and energy doing the same things, this may expain why those patients tend to have more trouble with mental fatigue and memory problems.
So, using more of your brain to do commonplace tasks is actually a sign of pathology.

Um, yeah. Rather, what she said.
My idea came from the observation that some people use different parts of the brain on either lobe for say, language skills, rather than a specific part of the brain all the time. But in any case, what you say makes sense. Thank you, Starr.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.
Yeah I know people do use different parts of the brain I mean different sides. Like i use the left side of the brain i think for chemistry and math which i am better at then english by all means. However my english tends to be decent though. I am horrible at debating though which I just demonstrated oh well...
I think I know what yer talking about, Cecilia. I'm sure I could look it up. But it's almost 1am over here, so I'm in no mood to bother or care about it. It's no slight against you--You made a good point about pointing that out--I'm just too lazy I still stick with what I said above *points*
Tnisk and Future Vision has been delayed another day. Chances are it'll come out tomorrow
I don't think there's much consensus on whether one side or the other is "better" for certain things.
Language seems to be most efficiently processed in the left brain, so left-handed people tend to have a larger, less organized language center on the other side. It doesn't mean that lefties necessarily have problems with language; however, lefthandedness is associated with some forms of communication disorders such as stuttering and is also more frequent among sufferers of autism and Asperger's syndrome, which have a prominent defect in communication.
Other differences in sides of the brain are subtle. There's some evidence that executive functioning, prioritizing, planning, and critical decision making are more likely localized in the left prefrontal cortex, and self-inhibition, emotional controls, ethical thought, and judgment are in the right prefrontal, but these are actually present a little bit in both, weighted more on one side or the other.
There're a lot of studies on people with brain injury or stroke or after a lobotomy that show that for every rule about brain localization of abilities, there are plenty of exceptions. Some of this has to do with brain plasticity. So after an injury, you can retrain yourself to a minimal level of function in an area by remapping the learning to a different area. Not as efficient, and perhaps never as powerful as the original substrate, these secondary areas are remarkable in their existance at all.
Not to undermine Starr's lovely analysis, but I think we're taking Cecilia's comment out of proportions--he (and I) can hardly keep up You debaters and your analyses. Or that and it's late and I'm too tired to read
Just a reminder that not everyone is a scholar like some of us Coffeepeoples
@SB: See what you think of this. I can make any changes you want for the most part, including the text and/or adding or taking away characters.
@Neurology: I find this stuff fascinating, and I studied it a bit in high school on my own. What has been said so far is pretty much correct - different areas of the brain are used for different functions. Things like the man who insisted that his mother was fake or a spy (because the part of his brain that linked emotion to visual images had been damaged, he felt no emotions when looking at her) fascinate me. In that particular case, he was able to recognize her voice as her own over the phone, because the link between hearing and emotions was still intact. Weird, yet immensely interesting, to me at least.
@Alacar: Sorry about earlier, didn't mean to step on any toes. I was just bored, is all. Shopping keeps me entertained.
Edit:
1. Heh, forgot about my cookie earlier. I didn't even realize I got one until it was pointed out.
2. Almost forgot to tell you guys I put in my application for my passport today. I finally got all the necessary paperwork together and went down to the post office and dropped it off. It costs $100 :(, but, hey, that's one more thing to cross off the list of things to do so I can go to Japan. I should get everything back in 6-8 weeks, if all goes well.
I am a scholar in math and science though. Although my english skills is decent though not as good as mamelon's or snoops english and vocabulary.
Well the be frank there are about 12 cranial nerves that serve different functions like one is for smell while another one could be for motor muscular movement. I learned that from biology human anatomy over 900 page text book.
I wasn't really talking about the human brain though. I was talking about the mind and I think the mind and the brain does not always mean the samething even if they can be use interchangeably in my opinion. Like neither side of the brain can perform telekenesis that special talent comes from the power of the mind not the brain. Also how do you explain people hearing voices in their head? thats from the mind. There was also this one guy on sci fi that can communicate with the dead on crossing over with edward or something it was a real and live actual show. He used his mind to perform such a task and obviously not everyone can do what he does. This is also a true story when my step dad was younger he could literally change the temperature of his hands to hot or cold by concentrating with his mind on the tasks.
I also heard from my step dad that he knew this one guy that thought he had malaria and had all of the symptoms for it. He went to the doctor to get checked out and the baffling news was he seemed perfectly fine from the blood tests. It was his mind believing that he really had the disease and the story is true. In my opinion the brain is the physical meaning while the mind is the conceptual meaning.
@shin: thanks shin! You make me feel pretty special right there.
@alacar: i appreciate you standing up from me alacar thanks! *hugs alacar*
@mamelon:Have a great night mamelon and see you soon! *hugs mamelon*
@mind vs brain: I dont think you guys understand though. I clearly heard and watch the movie "the secret" and a person in the movie literally said that we only use about 5 percent of our mind. I wouldn't make something like this up by any means. I am sorry but I honestly am telling you guys what i hear so I hope you guys take that into consideration. I wouldn't even mention about this topic if i didn't see the inspirational movie.
See you all soon and have a great night everyone! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*
Psychonauts: It's very fun to play, at least one time through. I was playing it through a second time through, to finally beat it, and got bored with it. It just doesn't lend itself to multiple playthroughs. But it's incredibly funny, very original, and the animation of the game is fun to watch. Well worth it.
Ranma 1/2: Ah... But do I love this series. I remember, I first found it in 8th grade, when a guy in a summer camp I was at got these from his mom. I borrowed one to read it. Unfortunately, camp ended before I was able to actually get him the books back, and I didn't see him at subsequent sessions. Unfortunately, I'm not very far. When I get a job again, I have so much manga to catch up on...
Brain Usage: I'm just not touching this one. I don't know enough about it.
I find it funny that I have around 57 views on my blog, I have three entries, but no comments. Sleeping, shadenfreude, and Plato's Ideal World are my topics. You'd think SOMEONE could get a comment going there.
Mr. Stuff: I've seen a good amount of the animes you've listed. Have you ever seen this anime called "Grenadier", I believe? I saw it in an AMV movie (at least, I think that's the name), and thought it'd be interesting. Can't find a torrent for it, though.
Then again, I don't need one right now, because I'm laughing like hell at Saiyuki.
My internet is screwed up, and I have no idea why. I think some virus or someting uninstalled some drivers, so now I can't use the internets.
I'm posting this from my dad's PC, if you're curious. ;p
Anyway, school's back. My timetable is excellent - why, tomorrow I have double Ancient History and double free period (I get five free periods a week due to German.) and Art, Drama and maths. The free periods help; I can get all my homework done and have nothing to worry about.
And on friday-saturday-sunday i'm on music camp! Music camp is good fun.

LMAO. Grenadier is the anime that gets made fun of in AMV Hell 3 for having gunfights in which the women reload using only their cleavage. They just sort of either bounce or flip upside down and the bullets pop up from their cleavage and land inside their revolver *somehow* (I'm guessing magic). I've had the opportunity to watch it, but chosen not to. I've heard it's actually halfway decent if you don't mind things like that though, so I may give it a shot a some point, but it's not very high on my list of things to watch.
@Charlie: Hrmm, that sucks. Hope you can get that fixed.
Blorg for me as well. I'm awake and it's 6:30 in the morning. I slept for four hours, and woke up again. Time to try to go back to sleep.
That's the one. I remember seeing it in AMV Hell 3. I heard it was good, too, and wanted to watch it. Can't find a place to get it, though. Then again, I'm behind on watching all the anime I have, anyways. I still need to finish Escaflowne, which I have on DVD, and then I have several others already downloaded, and MANY others waiting on downloads. Hehehe.
Morning, everyone. Off to my new job. *crosses fingers*
@Starr: I get it now. It seems pretty intuitive, but one still has to actually learn it.
@Bornover: what is you avatar and banner from?
@Kevin: Of course, I understand.
Well, guys, I'll see you all later today. *waves*

Oh yeah! The 'house is a crazy place most days. To condense for you, Tuatha: J-rock is great, and so is American music. Brains are used, but not enough. Also YAY VIDEO GAMES ^___^;;
Oooohhhh, I'm actually nervous. We're going to the game store to reserve a copy of Rogue Galaxy, and the little boy part of me is hoping that Colin (the clerk) will be all "well hey Josh! We thought you of all people would want this game so we got it in a day early, just for you!"
It took me a year to reach 1,000, so you're about on par with me, I guess.

Ah, Koda Kumi. I actually liked the songs she did for FFX-2. Jade did a good job with the English versions of those songs, but I tend to listen to the Japanese versions more. Especially "Real Emotion."
Square's been getting better about their vocal talent lately, and thank god. I HATELOATHEKILL the ending theme from FFXII, but putting Gackt in Dirge of Cerberus was a great idea. Those two songs are so reminiscent of Rebirth, my favorite Gackt album =)
@Alacar: I like the Teen Girl Squad banner a lot. I'll consider it.
@Mr. Stuff: I like that banner also. Gah, it's hard to decide! I think I'll use yours for now, but if Ala can make anything better, then maybe I'll take that. Not to make it a contest or anything. Thanks again to both of you. I really appreciate it.
Morning. Sorry I went on about such detailed drivel and I promise I won't bore you further today.
Because I have a busy day today, just headed out the door in fact.
