I just checked Pennsylvania's state laws on rape. And, in fact, a man can be considered raped in Pennsylvania, according to the law. I don't know were you got that men couldn't be raped.
Did it say when that law was passed? The most recent I remember is that you can legally "sexually assault" a man, but not rape him. If they changed it, then it's about time.
Wow, this is becoming quite a heated discussion. I guess I'll put in my two cents, although I have already expressed earlier my sadness about rape.
Although I do agree that men can be raped, I think it is foolish to say that they are raped just as much as women. It seems to me like it is much easier for a man to stop sexual intercourse than a woman. Now, don't kill me for this, but in most circumstances, men are stronger than women, and are therefore able to force a woman to have sex with them much easier than vice versa. Please do not get mad at me for this; I am not sexist or anything, I just think this is a fact that women are more easily raped than men. I think the rape of women is more talked about because they can get pregnant without wanting to, which can completely change their lives. It is still very sad either way, and to me is an example of what the world is coming to.

[16:23] Alacar Leoricar: maybe if you do it'll make the porn more meaningful
Well, seeing as one in every four women are rape victims, and one in every eight men are raped, you are perfectly correct.
Now, just because a men is raped, doesn't mean it was a women that did it. Take me for example, I was raped by another man.
However, I think that the statistics are irrelevant. Rape is still rape, and it doesn't really matter what frequency it occurs in, or in what gender it is more predominant.
And what drives me nuts is the notion mentioned above- so what if men are traditionally stronger? Rape is painful enough, but when you have people either A) implying that men should be able to defend themselves, and using these statistics to back it up, or B) stating that men in general are more inclined to rape, it ends up being psychologically scarring for them.
There really is no need to invalidate or diminish the impact a rape has on someone by thrusting gender issues into the mix along with it.

Like I said, I wasn't trying to be sexist or anything. I haven't seen any statistics or anything, but I'm fairly certain that women do get raped more than men do. This is not because of what I see on the news or what I hear from others, but just common sense. I really hope mamelon does not "chew me up and spit me out", because I do not believe that I said anything too bad or unreasonable. If I did, I am sorry. I was not trying to offend anyone.
EDIT: I am also not implying that men are more inclined ot rape than women are. Even if they are, I have no evidence to back that. And, ignorant me, I completely forgot about man on man rape. I guess that would suggest that men have an equal chance of being raped as women. And I'm very sorry, Yukora, about what happened to you. I don't really know what else to say but I hope it did not hurt you much, and you got through it okay.
Yes, and men tend to get enveloped by society's standard of machoness. And let me tell you, the only thing more demeaning than the rape, is going in to the police, and telling them you've been raped.

Nah, she doesn't do that. However, don't be too shocked if you end up with a 28 page Mamelon post in reply to that, though.
Again, my point is- what the hell does it matter? Because it happens more often, does that make a man's rape less important? Does it make a woman's more important? Additionally, should a man be expected to defend himself from something like that just because he's culturally expected to be able to do so?
My opinion is no, it shouldn't, and that any suggestion otherwise is antiquated and more harmful than it is helpful.

No on most of those questions, except that I think that a women's rape should be considered more important. The only reason for this is that women can get pregnant, and men cannot. Do not read any more into it. In my opinion, that is the only reason why.

That's a silly reason. A man can just as easily get an STD, which could kill him. You can't assign a value to someone's trauma like that.
Don't misunderstand me: An unwanted pregnancy is a big deal. However, you can't just say things like "Oh, sorry, your rape is less important since you lack a uterus", because that can be a very painful thing to say, and it shows a lack of sensitivity on the subject, as well as perpetuates a sense of gender bias on an issue that REALLY should not have one.
Ok, I don't like that conclusion. Just because a women can get pregnant doesn't mean a damn thing. When you are raped, you arn't just forced to have sex. You are stripped of your dignity, sense of self, and your innosence.
I'd imagine it's the same for both men and women, and it's absolutely rediculous to call one worse simply because of a possible out come.
I did not say that it is less traumatic for men than for women. I was just saying, the results are exactly the same for men and women, except that women can get pregnant, and men cannot.
I hate to sound like the bad guy, and I feel bad about saying things that offend you guys. I'm going to stop arguing before this gets too heated and angry. I just want to end saying that I do not, by any means, want to diminish the horrible effects of rape. It is a sad thing for both men and women, and should be stopped at all costs possible. Again, sorry if I offended anyone, and I hope no one thinks less of me because of it.
I have no real input on the rape discussion except this: Rape is a crime, no matter who does it to who for whatever reason, with whatever and however, and whenever. My condolences go out to my friend Yukora for his ordeal, and for Nai's friends.
I'm playing Wind Waker again, and I gotta say, sometimes I don't even notice the cartoony graphics, especially in a dungeon.
Strongbad, I have not been offended at all here. I hope I ddn't make you feel that i was. I quite enjoy this mature conversation about a serious topic.
Alacar, thanks for your concern, but I am fine. My rape was a while ago, and I have moved on from it.
Wow. Quite a discussion going here. I don't really have that much to say on the matter, or I'd say it. Rape is rape is rape. It's an undesirable side effect of our biological need to mate. It's yet another area in which, though we've come quite far as a species, we are still unable to overcome our biological drives. A strong focus on rationalism conflicting with centuries of inborn animal instinct leads to the human brain being, as C.S. Friedman puts it in "Black Sun Rising", "a jury-rigged mess".
I talked to my parents, and they're supportive of my move, as long as I have some kind of job lined out that has insurance. I'll need a plan, in other words - something I'll take the next couple of days to come up with, as well as finishing a new copy of my resume.
There's nothing going on here. You'd think that there'd be parties, but apparently it's dead. So I'm just here in my room and watching the Devils game, a rare treat because I'm outside the area where we get Fox Sports New York.
Hey all, just got back from my Uncles house, who got me to fix up my broken video card I had the other day, so I can game again.
And yes, it is possbile for a man to be raped in Pennsylvania, I have a neighbor that went through the whole process after it happened to him. It was really scary though, even though it happened two years back, the neighborhood is still a bit paranoid because it happened by someone breaking into his house. The good thing is he was able to figure out who it was and the girl (yes a girl, she was a strange girl, but still a girl) got some sort of sentence (I think it was like 16 years or something)
@Yukora. Thanks for pointing out that PA has a better law regarding rape. I WAS, in fact, using an older law as reference. It's not THAT old, but it's still outdated.
I've never told antone this before, but I too was raped so very long ago. I think I was like...8 or somewhere around there. You gotta love it when your mother's boyfriends would rather have you than her.:-/ It is VERY psycologically damaging. I just recently, (2 years ago), got over it and just let go. I still see him around town everynow and then, and it takes everything I have not to beat the living **** out of him when I do. My two best friends, (both women), got raped, also. IN total...out of the 10 people that I am closest to, that I've met, 10 of them have been raped. I dunno if it's just the area I live in, or what, but it seems like most people don't ever believe a guy when he says he was raped. You gotta love the condition this world's in, eh?:rollout:
~edit~ For future reference, ya'll can call me Chris, Christopher, Kissyfur, or any variation you can think of, if you want.
I think I know what Strongbad was trying to get at with the 'stronger' bit. I think he meant physical strength. I do find it true that men seem to be stronger, physically, than women in many cases. And, in those cases, men can physically overpower women more often than the reverse.
I'm fairly sure he didn't mean anything degrading by the comment. Then again, this is just me.
On another topic, I urge anyone that's interested in D&D to check out the Pen and Paper Inn and get involved. Everything is going awesomely, there are several games started, and more on the way.
And if you like RP in general, please check out the rest of the Colosseum, which badly needs players.
And, Photon Eater, might not want to reference the Chan site. It's not for kids, and we don't want anyone to go looking for it.
And it's not necessarily a debate on rape. Just a discussion with a correction to an assumption. And a rather hefty one, nonetheless.
If there are any suggestions to changes in specific cards in Academy, let me know. The only cards I'm not changing are Arguas, Omna, Alacar, Malis, and Kyriel. Those are my promos and I dun wanna have to go to a lot of trouble to change them.
Ya know what...it's been so long since I've talked to her, that I've plumb forgot what she called me. I think it was just Chris. You have me thinking, now.:-/ Kissyfur comes from the cartoon of the same name. It's grown on me. Hell, to my nephews, I'm Uncle Kissyfur. I am pretty sure that Krissy Kristina called me something other than Chris, I just can't think of what it was.
Hey all. I know I haven't posted in a while, but that's because I had a big day today. I took the SATs for the first time, just as a test run, and I learned a few things.
Just as a prenote, it may sound pathetic, but I'm a junior in Algebra II and all of my other friends are in Pre Cal or Calculus, leaving me with all the sophomores. It doesn't bother me, though, as I plan to get into a music school.
But anyways, I made the mistake of thinking I could handle the Mathematics Lvl 2 part, so I signed up for that. One big FAAAAAAAT mistake on my part. Half of it was calculus, so I didn't know any of that, and the rest that I DID know was pretty friggin hard. Luckily I think I did alright in the spanish and literature parts. I know I'll probably have to take it again anyway.
And on a lighter note, I have good news bad news time. The badnews story goes like this. My mom asked me to feed the dog tonight, and I noticed our can was out of dog food. So I went out to my mom's car, because she said my dad had gotten dog food earlier today, and I thought he took out my mom's car, because I took his car to the SATs. I pop open the trunk, and for the first time in probably 8 years, I saw what my parents are getting me for christmas................*drumroll*...............a Nintendo Wii. I was too excited, and I have a bad habit of not wanting to know what my parents get me, so I slammed down the trunk, and to my dismay, my mother heard it. She came out and saw that I'd seen it, and got real upset, because she just got it yesterday, and was excited to get it for me. I told her it's really no big deal, as I was as surprised as I wanted to be right there. She asked if I'd play surprised for the rest of the family (as they don't know I saw) on Christmas, and I said I'll wait until next christmas if I have to. I'm just glad I'm getting a WIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!
So what's the good news you ask? The good news is ZOH MY FREEEEEAKIN' GORSH!!! I'M GETTIN' ME A WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!
So yeah. If you bothered reading all that, I commend you. I don't have the attention span to read all 17 pages I missed.
And it looks like everyone is getting into the season with their snowy avvys, myself included. It is indeed fun.
Although I do agree that men can be raped, I think it is foolish to say that they are raped just as much as women. I don't see what the means in context of the topic. I think it is probably logical to presume that a grown is man is harder to sexually assault by use of physical force than a woman is; but that is only one of many ways in which a person can be forced to do something against his or her will. A woman with a gun can just as easily force a man to do something; not to mention blackmail. Also, no one, male or female, is particularly resistant to drugs and date rape. And don't forget to consider that male children are no more able to defend themselves than female children.
But what does that have to do with the moral quality of being a man or being a woman? Being "harder to be raped" doesn't have anything to do with gender itself, but occasionaly with some of the characteristics people have because of sexual identity. Frequency of sexual victims in a particular demographic mean nothing toward the premise that men are "scum" (morally inferior). It's not even in the same context of discussion.
Quote from Photon Eater »
Perhaps he meant a man cannot be legally raped by a woman?
I believe Silent Prophet is referring to the fact that certain legislatures have traditionally defined "rape" as entailing penetration, and forced sexual acts which don't include penetration are simply "sexual assault" or some other label (much in the way that "sodomy" has its own unique legal label). But truthfully, this distinction serves little desireable purpose, since sexual acts are quite varied but usually have the same consequences psychologically regardless. Using the old definition, a woman cannot rape someone, which I think is not a practical side effect. A woman can force someone into a sexual act, and that deserves to be treated with the same legal judgment as forced penetration.
The distinction is most likely to be because of covert agendas based on gender paradigms . . . such as the oft-held presumption that men aren't as affected by sexual violation as women. You just can't make that claim.
