Hey all, cant talk much right now, i have a dentist in 45 minutes... yay...
Yes, Photon, that happened to me about 4 times now, and im just coming off of the 4th one. 3 of them were caused by the stores i played at closing down or stopped sanctioning due to lack of attendance. I try to rebound by going to play regionals or something, but i had a lack of desire to deal with Ravnica in T2. However, looking ahead, i enjoy the fact that i should be free to go to the TS Prerelease as well as a few PTQs in the next few months...hell, GP New Jersey i might even go to if i really want to play...its only 30 minutes away from here...
- The sheer orthogonality of it all. So many things interact with so much else.
- Deck construction. I am much more interested in deck construction than in actually piloting a deck.
- Color wheel theory.
- Design theory.
- Meeting weirdos at prereleases.
Things I dislike about Magic
- Actually playing decks, especially draft decks.
- The inability of many people to recognize that other people play the game for different reasons than they do.
- Cutthroatiness.
- Vindicate targeting my only permanent - a forest.
- The belief that the color pie isn't so important.
Here's a topic. Do you ever get the MTG blues? You know what I mean... you all of the sudden find yourself with little to no desire to play. You could care less what new cards are coming out, and primarily, you are just tired of it... tired of spending money, tired of playing, or tired of dealing with other players.
Anyone else ever go through this? I usually do about once a year, typically as a new block encroaches.
I used to start to feel Magic'd out after the third and final expansion had been out for about a month. This was back in the days when Worlds was in August. So I'd burn out, wait until Worlds was over, and the netdeckers were finished having a field day with the Worlds decks, and come back with the new block. Riding close on its heels was Extended season, which always got me real excited again as new cards found homes in favorite old decks.
Now that worlds isn't until much later, and there is a fourth set in the summer months, I get Magic burnout earlier and it lasts longer. Nowadays, Extended seems like "type 2 from 2 years ago" so it's a real letdown. Only thing that gets me excited now is watching players at States struggle to work with the new block cards. I really like that States is after the release of the new block. I think players at the States level are free to experiment a lot more with new cards/strategies than Worlds contenders, who tend to stick with proven decks from the previous type 2.
Wow. Not a lot of progress on the house after my first 2 classes. One more to go, then I go home and check on my internet class (Intro to Programming II.. yum, C++!).
Just popping in until my third IRL class starts (World History), which I hope promises to be as fun as my last class (English II) seemed to be.
Priest, if I don't PM you right now I will tonight or tomorrow morning. Now for that survey:
5 things I love about Magic:
1. A hell of a lot of room for creativity
2. Tha card art. I mean come on
3. Getting attached to a color or deck archetype for the first time
4. The social aspect
5. Deck-building in general
5 things I hate about Magic:
1. Old, overpowered counterspells
2. Rules lawyers
3. Netdecks
4. The snobby aspect of the game (i.e. if you don't play in tournaments you aren't really playing)
5. The majority of homebrew sets
As fof the MTG blues...yeah. I go through it on a regular basis, but thankfully it usually coincides with me getting a new RPG to play, so I never suffer. Of course, it always seems as though everyone else I know if going through the MTG blues when I feel like playing a lot. For example...I have a Haakon deck I still haven't played ;____;
This, of course, wouldn't include Academy block, would it? I'm trying to cut my set's final product a step over the rest in design, look, and feel.
I mean, where else are you going to be able to play with little ol' me?
Actually, he's probably referring to some of the preposterous custom cards and set ideas we have run into over the years, where some kid will slap together random colors, effects, themes, and flavors arbitrarily.
I remember one set by some kid on Livejournal. It was supposedly based off of Dynasty Warriors- (because 3 Kingdoms wasn't good enough at that theme, apparently). Only, instead of being based off the game proper, it was based off of the made up adventures of he and his gaming buddies. They had a legend named Sephiroth666. Yes, a legend based off of one of their screen names. The set also included a one drop black indestructible legend based off the creator, an enchantment that allowed you to counter land drops (in red, no less), and a black non-legendary creature named Empress Luna, who's rulestext read "All cards have storm". When asked why she wasn't legendary, he said "Oh, I just didn't want her to be that powerful."
Anyway, that is likely the sort of mindblowingly awful custom sets to which he refers, which sadly makes up a vast majority of custom cards and sets (this is not a comment on any one member's set. In fact, most of the design on MTGS is pretty good. But you have to admit, there are some stinkers out there.)
Gonna have to agree with you on there, Photon. This is why I'm writing that article on making a set. Hopefully it'll help make things better.
Though now that you mention it, I forgot to include the line "Pick a good theme. Making a set based off of Final Fantasy 7 is not a good theme. Making a set based in a world where Crystals fuel all the earth's energies is a good theme."
A to *** Hater for post #2300! Wow, 2300 already? holy crap!
edit: A teaser banner for my article, which will get posted (hopefully) sometime soon. Made by yours truly.
DDR quiz
What's your difficulty level? 1-8
What's your favorite song? Bye Bye Baby Balloon from ultramix 3
What's the "hardest" song you've beaten on your difficulty level? That one on heavy
Ever gotten a "AA"? "AAA"? on songs 5 and under
Ever done Oni, Marathon, or other alternate modes? Oni is really hard...I can do about half of one. Never did marathon after the first time.
Do you have Stepmania? "?"
Do you need/want more songs for it? For DDR yes...but idk what stepmania is
Have you made your own steps with it? Ummm no
You're welcome! I was sniped. Didn't see that post until I'd posted mine.
Keep in mind, there is an extra-special Geek MP3 available until next friday (check post #2: HugaTron), and Gauntlet is still available for playtesting here, or at least to see the completed rough draft.

Thanks, PotN. If you're a member of the Writer's forum, you can take a pre-view of it. Otherwise, wait until the editors are done with it and it's posted. I should ask if/when it'll go up.
Love the avvy/banner.
Man, this is gonna be interesting:
Fundamentals of Public Speaking
English Comp II
World History I
Intro to Programming II (online)
The Speaking course is basically revolving around 4 speeches I have to make. That shouldn't be too hard, as the topics will be inherently geeky.
The English course looks fun, basically because the professor is highly praised for his style.
The World History class almost put me to sleep, but I'm nearing naptime anyways. I need to get more sleep daily.. Le sigh. I'll work with it. Gonna be consisting of 2 tests, 2 book reports, and the exam. Maybe some extra work, but I doubt it.
The Computer Programming class is something I'll have to watch over myself, as it is online. Luckily, I'll have ol' Arguas gimme some tips (it's all C++, methinks)
Nice banner, Alacar. I've also started classes today. I started Media and Society, Intermediate Spanish I, and Principles of Fitness and Wellness today. At around 5:00 I'm going to the fitness center and exercise for 40 minutes to an hour. After that it's dinner time, and I asked that dream girl on her Facebook page if she'd like to go with me.
Alacar: Don't feel so bad at falling asleep in World History (almost). It's much worse when you have it early in the morning. Like 7 AM early...
But the schedule doesn't seem so bad for ya. Enjoy its wild twists and turns!
As for the whole setmaking thing - I dunno if you have this as one of your rules but it should be: Don't procrastinate! The longer you put it off the less likely you are to finish the set.
That and be realistic about its size... but that should've been obvious.
@Photon: Is there a way I can send a baseball bat with a note attached that says "Use this to bludgeon yourself" to those people? 'Cause seriously that whole thing was ridiculously stupid
Well it doesn't set up 'rules', but it does say that it takes dedication. It takes Wizards R&D months to finish a set. Don't expect yours to be done in a few weeks.
But I'd rather let you people see it on the front page and read it for yourselves
edit: I noticed there are some updates for MWS. Please run Autoupdate, people!
It's been so long that new people have come that I've never even heard of.
Well, I've been fine for the past, well, three months or so. My internet connection doesn't like to work all of the time, so I may never reach the level of activity that I had last spring.
And hello to you, PurpleD, I'd have to say I've missed you as well.
But anyways, nothing new in my neck of the woods, but that's not always a bad thing.

*three new chairs appear* That's better. *ninja flips into one chair followed by two Ninja of the Deep Hours* Ahh. I know I haven't been around in a long time here. That's because other things have been on my to do list. I'm back and hopefully I'll finally do more then just stare into space while I'm here because I was too shy to say much. I also want to thank Omna for being a kind and generous host.
@ Photon. Remember the test to see if people think you are a girl. Well ill tell you this. i said im a male a lot of times and stuff. And people think im gay / girl
So your conclusions were right!
Where is the test?
I like your banner and avie. What's with the femme approach? I can see why people think you're a girl/gay. no offense.
@Alacar: That banner looks nice. Unfortunately, I'm no good at banner-making.
Hi. *looks around for a second* I suppose I'll order something while I'm here. *searches for the nearest person to get drinks* This should do. *hands over a piece of paper requesting three cokes* I was a little busy with my ninja friends and decided to come back because I haven't been here since sometime earlier this year when I joined.
Alacar: My MWS says there are no updates...weird...you sure its a new update or did you forget something a little bit back?
Wurp: I have never seen you before, so I welcome you to this place, and welcome you back if you have been here before.
Tneill: It wasnt a real test, but earlier this thread or a thread or two ago we had a long conversation about people who were gender confused, and *** Hater said he would try stuff by making his avvy/banner look feminine as well as his font, to see if people think he is a girl/gay. That was what he means by the "test".
Yay! My computer hath be repair-ed! If my computer hadn't been broken, I would have spent the last few days complaining about that. But I couldn't. Because my computer was broken.
Wow, it seems like there's a lot of people here who are brand new to MTGS. Hiya, everyone.
