Good LORD, Wombat, I'm starting to get the impression that there's nothing in the whole world short of Earthbound that you DO like or can tolerate. Just calm down, alright? It isn't like that book killed your family or something.
Maybe I'm odd (shut up), but I like literature like that. I'm an avid Charles Dickens fan and I used to swoon over Shakespeare in high school. Hell, I re-read "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "A Tale of Two Cities" about once a year, at least, and those were both high school assignment books. By definition I should hate them, but I ended up loving them. Madame DeFarge FTW.
Coincidentally, I just finished "The Great Gatsby" for the first time ever. It's really not what I was expecting from a book I've heard described as everything from a masterpiece to "typically boring classic literature," but I thoroughly enjoyed the story and a lot of what it was trying to get across.
Read up on your history of the time period and you'll have a deeper grasp of the plot of the book than if you ever read the book itself. That's how obvious everything is in it...
I'm a history buff myself, especially when it comes to American history. It didn't help me enjoy the book any more.
And yes, Ethersphere, I'm quite a negative person. But I don't only like EarthBound: I like Magic or else I wouldn't be here. I could list all the things that I like, but that's too time consuming.
As for Mr. Stuff's comment about the clan leaders: Danica told me about the reason of her absense on my Facebook wall, but I'll say nothing. Wait until she comes back.
Ooh. Literature. Actually, I chose English Language over English Literature for my A levels, so I'll not comment, in case I make a fool of myself.
@Alacar: You seem to be winning by a decent margin now. I voted for you, by the way.
Fox's conumdrom: Why do bad things happen to good people?
Hm. I was thinking about it, and realised that there is some truth in it. I'm not religious, and this thought drives me further from a possible faith. Anyone care to comment?
Oh, and the whole break-up thing is much harder than I thought it would be.
'Fox.
Everybody takes their turn on the short end of the stick, methinks. You're not the only one to lose a love, and I'm sure it wont be the last time, either. But learn from it, try to understand why it happened, then put it behind you and move on. Then you'll be in a position to console others who are starting to go through hard times in their lives.
I suppose you've heard this one before, but when God closes a door, he opens a window. It's your job to find that window and use it. To do so you may have to give yourself time to stop grieving and look around you at what else is there.
I was trying to resist the urge to comment on that... but I didn't make it.
The other option is that everything happens for no real special reason at all. It's just that the human brain likes to impose meaning onto external events whether it's appropriate or not. Not that that means life has no point... (well, it doesn't, but...) Since you're alive, you have to decide for yourself the purpose of your own life.
*hopes this doesn't start a giant philosophical war*
Speaking of Frankenstein, does anyone else (having read the original work) find it highly amusing how the process of restoring life is depicted in the book as some fundamental secret that has been discovered, instead of some complicated process with machinery? I mean, in the book Frankenstein treks across the countryside and then creates a monster soon after arriving in this rural town... It's not like he carried all this complicated equipment with him through the mountains. But yet, nearly every movie since has been all "Lightning, dials, weird machines, go!". What gives?

Hmmm... maybe because chemical reactions don't translate well into exciting visual imagines?

The images of the monster's birth from the novel are still pretty disturbing. I mean, you have a bunch of yellowing flesh and organs stiched together submerged in a vat of amniotic fluid. (Aside: How did he get that much amniotic fluid?) In the book, Doctor Frankenstein isn't portrayed as being crazy or dangerous at all, as he is in typical pop culture references to him. He does dabble in things that he perhaps shouldn't, but he doesn't mean any harm.
Hey all... been very swamped with work, havent been able to get on to talk much.
@Books: **** YOU SCARLET LETTER! THATS RIGHT, **** YOU IN THE FACE YOU PIECE OF **** BOOK YOU NEED TO ****ING DIE!...I read taht last year...I wanted to either bash my head into a wall or vomit from the book...i will agree with MW here, it just...sucked.
As for Frankenstein, I liked it, having recently read it for summer reading...it was a bit different than i expected, having only seen the portrayals and not read the classic story...and i enjoyed the graphic detail of his creation...Not sure why, but it sort of hooked me into reading the rest of the book from there...

Whoa whoa whoa...settle down, Nemcon. I've never read it, but from all this hate, I don't think I should. The last thing I've read other than the Magic novels, I believe was "The Catcher in the Rye". I wasn't that big a fan of it, but to be fair, I had to read it for school so I didn't pay too much attention to it. I also, was never one to look really deep for symbolism. I might give it a reread someday, should I get the chance to do so.
I've got a great suggestion for book report fodder: Grendel. It's relatively short (if you're not much of a reader), crammed with symbolism and philosophical what-not to discuss, and it's got a monster that regularly and graphically kills people. On top of it, since it's about the events of the classic Beowulf told from the monster's point of view, it's an easy sell to a teacher who wants you to read a classic.

As a huge reader of anything and everything, I must say that I find most classics to be acceptable. I haven't read The Scarlet Letter, but I have read many others.
The only book I didn't like in High School was A Farewell to Arms. I just never got into the story. I've heard Hemigway is a great writer, but I found his style to be somewhat bland.
Maybe I just didn't get something about his style. I don't know...

DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
I am starting: TSC(the scarlet letter) tonight and i liked "tale of two cities and 2 kill a mockingbird. We are reading "the crucible" and "the great gatsby" later this year along with 8 other books.

I am starting: TSC(the scarlet letter) tonight and i liked "tale of two cities and 2 kill a mockingbird. We are reading "the crucible" and "the great gatsby" later this year along with 8 other books.
Funny, I also read The Crucible and The Great Gatsby last year for my English class. Are you taking AP Language and Composition? I actually did like the The Crucible, and last year was the second time I read The Great Gatsby, which I liked even better the second time around. That time I actually liked it the whole way through instead of just the last quarter. If it's your first time reading it, a word of precaution: it's slow going at first but in the end, it's enjoyable. I read To Kill a Mockingbird too (not in that class), and I liked that.
Pretty much done with all my work: I have to conclude my religion paper, and I've got some Spanish work to do. Also I have some reading for Media and Society, but I have plenty of time to do that (the class doesn't meet until Monday).
I am taking Ib english, which is International Baccalaureate. I take the whole program, anyone who deosn't know what that is should google it. I am in 10th grade, but basically IB is like Ap but all Classes are IB.
ps: google it
Hello my name is kevin. I am new to the astonishing coffee house and i would like introduce myself. I am from the clan ARD and I also used to be or I think I still am one of Belgareth's apprentices in legacy.:p But anyways how are all of you doing?
I've got a great suggestion for book report fodder: Grendel. It's relatively short (if you're not much of a reader), crammed with symbolism and philosophical what-not to discuss, and it's got a monster that regularly and graphically kills people. On top of it, since it's about the events of the classic Beowulf told from the monster's point of view, it's an easy sell to a teacher who wants you to read a classic.
Seconded. One caveat though - read Beowulf first, obviously. It's a great read (at least the new translation by Seamus Heaney) and it's cool for being one of the oldest preserved middle english texts. Who can swim through monster-infested waters for ten days straight while clad in full chain mail and wielding a sword against sea monsters in one hand? Why, Beowulf, of course. But with Grendel, you get to see the monster's POV, which is insanely cool, despite the WTF moments when you see the dragon or whatever that could see into the future and different time zones.
Omna, no hurries, I was just curious since no one had said anything. Sounds like my senior year of college. Take all the time you need. Seriously.
On another note, I'm changing my location (on here, not in RL) for a couple of days because of what happened tonight. The girl that showed up to my anime club last time (reminder: ~14, Inuyasha fangirl) brings about four of her friends: a couple who are younger, and another couple who are her age. The anime watching quickly degenerates from anime watching to them talking amongst themselves, to throwing pencils, to hitting each other with books, stealing various articles from one another and proceeding to chase each other around the library, etc. I am not kidding - I was stuck in a room with about 5 thirteen year old girls who were exhibiting the full gamut of puberty, hyperactivity, and general chaotic behavior. It was less like an anime club and more like the parents stuck me with their kids for three hours. Hence, my new location.
In all honesty, I had fun, whether watching their antics or just watching the shows (mainly, just watching the shows). We watched Asagiri no Miko, Azumanga Daioh, Scrapped Princess, and Tsukikage Ran. It was fun to watch anime with multiple people again, even if they were rather inattentive.
Edit: Welcome, Kevin. Might I inquire as to what your avatar is from, and whether you would like a banner to go with it? [/shameless plug for my banner shop]
Oh my avatar is cecilia lynne adlehyde she is a character from wild arms alter code f its a playstation 2 game. Sure i would like a banner to go with my avatar if thats cool. Thanks for welcoming me everyone.

Two VERY contradictory paragraphs there Mr. Stuff. I'm glad to see you enjoyed the experience tho. Hope your next audience at least has better attention... maybe you should put up flyers at the local high school or something?
Cheetah Edit (Because Ninja has been overdone): How can i forget to welcome Kevin to the party? Enjoy yaself pal!
And Omna, Arguas, etc: We'll hold the fort for now. To tell ya the truth I dunno how you even have a few seconds for yourselves with all that going on. I do have something to run by ya in IM for the coffeehouse so when you feel like it feel free to IM me.

Cool. Just click [The Anime Shop] link in my sig and make the request there, and I'll have it done in the next day or so. Just tell me what you want in it - I can find some good source material pretty easily now that I've discovered where to look. Wild Arms is one of the animes I've been meaning to watch but still haven't yet.
@CA: The first paragraph just implied I wasn't having fun. The second clears that up. Half the fun was watching their antics - I mean seriously, do people actually behave like that? Geez. I had a good laugh, and felt sorry for their parents at the same time.

My shop will be stickied soon - three requests to go. Yay!
cool thats awesome thanks and yes i will mention about your anime shop in my sig thanks. I will add the link to my signature after i come back from clinicals for college.
