This is a collection of stories based on a popular Japanese novel. The stories are centered around another world, connected to our world by otherworldy rifts called shoku. The shoku appear in many places, but most often take the form of a giant ocean storm, sucking people and objects from one world into the other. The other world has twelve kingdoms, each of which has two Taiho (rulers), one being the King/Queen and the other being the kingdom's Kirin.
In this world, all creatures are born from special fruit which grow on a certain kind of magical tree. The tree at the center of the world (Mt. Hou) grows Kirin, each of which is bound to a certain kingdom, and which chooses a single ruler for that kingdom. The Kirin is an immortal being which naturally looks like a special kind of unicorn, though they often shift into human form to interact with others. When the ruler (Taiho) is chosen, they too become immortal, granted eternal youth by the god Tentei, who created the twelve kingdoms. Each Kirin also has the ability to control Youma (monsters/animals) by creating a Shirei that is bound to serve the Kirin. A Shirei is a more powerful and larger Youma that controls the small, normal sized Youma of its kind. An example of a Shirei would be a large wolf that leads a pack of smaller wolves.
The story begins with the tale of a normal high school girl and two companions who are saved by a mysterious stranger from the other world. They flee through a shoku to escape an attacking Youma, and end up in the kingdom of Kei, being pursued by a people under an oppressive ruler who fears that visitors from our world bring ill luck and must be destroyed. The kingdom of En welcomes all manner of peoples and is free from such hostilities, but will the trio be able to escape to En in time?
The amount of detail that goes into the history, culture, and presentation of the world of the 12 Kingdoms is staggering and beautiful at the same time. If you are a fan of fantasy or Asian mythology, this one is a must-see.

Is it a newer anime? I have some acquaintances that get all funny in the pants about Japanese mythology, and they've talked about it a lot, but I've always assumed it was a series that had been around for a while. However, the art style suggests otherwise.
P.S. You should do an older anime as the AotW sometime. Not nessecarily like Getter Robo old, but perhaps something that those of us who watched anime before anime was cool could wax nostalgic over?

Well, we can really just sort of do it whenever. It's my experience with group chats that they just sort of idle for hours on end, with people popping in and out whenever they can be online.
I don't find Maddox that funny. So no.
Edit: So, I'm trying on new fonts. Which is better- the pink (which I like better, and it looks better in night skin), or the hot pink, which is more legible? Furthermore, this doesn't look too much like modtext, does it?
