Yeah, the DQ law thing is hilarious, and one of the first bits of trivia a DQ fan brings up when someone starts to gushing about FF (which, while popular, is not nearly the powerhouse franchise it is in States). Seriously, if I had a dime for each time Josh brought up that law, I wouldn't be hanging around MTGS, that's for sure! I could hire people to do it for me.
LMAO they have a LAW??? That is so freaking AWESOME!
EDIT: which reminds me... i really need to start playing that................Tomorrow in between loads of laundry!
DQ8 is a good game. The gameplay experience is quite rich, and the story is fun. Some tips:
You'll need to decide which skills to emphasize in which characters. It's hard to know what to pick so here are pointers:
Hero Swords - He starts equipped with a sword, so that is one reason to start focusing on Swords early. Swords will enable him to a lot more single target damage and be more of a "fighter" type. Spears - This is a strong clas of weapon, able to deal a lot of damage and get a lot of critical hits. A very good choice if you don't want to do swords. Spears are actually better against metal slimes, usually, for levelling purposes. Boomerangs - This is the way I went. Boomerangs do less damage to single enemies, but are good against large groups. Boomerangs are slightly less powerful than Spears or Swords, but can speed up slow fights with a lot of targets. Fisticuffs - Most characters could be good at Fisticuffs, but due to lack of attack power from equipment, may be lacking in damage. Courage - One of the Hero's best skills, it's a good idea to level up Courage as well as his weapon skill of choice. Courage will enable your Hero's magical bility, including the power to teleport and heal. Very good skill, definitely recommended.
Yangus Axes - Yangus can deal a lot of damage with Axes, and deal a lot of critical hits. Axces tend to be good against metal slimes. Axes may be Yangu's most fiercesome skill, scaling his attack power way up. Clubs - Clubs will let you steal money from enemies, but the success is low. Many Club abilities can disrupt the enemy or cause it to skip a turn, but unfortunately these effects aren't too reliable. Scythe - Another good choice for damage, Scythes will also enable Yangus to steal items from enemies (though not very often). Scythes also offer a few multi-target attacks, in which Yangus is lacking, as well as instant death attacks. Fisticuffs - Yangus could do well with this, since he has naturally high attack power. His abilities from it may not be worth it, though. Humanity - Yangus can learn some support magic from this, like Kabuff or Share Magic. His lack of MP makes him less than optimal with magic, though, so this skill isn't a very high priority.
Jessica Knives - Jessica's Knives offer her some attacks that can instantly kill enemies, as well as allow her to use swords on higher levels, even among the most powerful. Jessica will be a stronger fighter is you specialize in Knives. Whips - Whips are very good at dealing damage to groups, not unlike Boomerangs. As well, Jessica learns some great Whip attacks like Twin Dragon Lash and Lady's Thong. Very good weapon skill if you aren't interested in Knives. Staves - Staves increase Jessica's magic capability, teaching her support spells to suplement her offensive arsenal. Even if you don't equip her with staves, the spells she learns can be worth it. If you do choose to give her staves, her MP will go up. Recommended for a more mage-like Jessica. Fisticuffs - Jessica wouldn't be bad at Fisticuffs, since her skill increases both her evade rate and critical hit rate. However, she has lower attack power and HP than, say, Yangus. Sex Appeal - Jessica can learn an array of abilities from this skill, and has a chance of interrupting enemies whenever they attack by charming them. A good support skill, though many of the attack abilities aren't very strong.
Angelo Swords - The Hero is probably better at Swords, though Angelo can be a good fighter with a strong sword. Bows - Very good skill for Angelo. There are Bow abilities which allow him to reclaim MP, which is good because he is one of the characters most reliant on MP (the other being Jessica). He's more versatile with Bows, even if he's not as fierce a damage dealer. Staves - Angelo learns most of his key spells on his own, though he can benefit from more spells. If you equip him with Staves, his MP will rise, putting him on par with Jessica. Fisticuffs - Angelo would actually be good at Fisticuffs, as it increases both his evade and critical rate, as well as teaching him some very strong techniques, like Miracle Moon. Charisma - Angelo's support skill allows him to confuse enemies, manipulate tension levels, and stun enemies. On higher levels he even learns multitarget light spells (he doesn't naturally learn as many multitarget attack spells as Jessica). Especially good for a more mage-like Angelo, though some Charisma abilities could be useful even to a dedicated warrior.

All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.
The only characters I would advise gooing thr Fisticuffs route with are Angelo and Jessica, to be honest. with Yangus you miss out on a LOT of damage potential and the Hero is just too good with spears.
Which reminds me; if you don't go the swords route with the Hero, spears are awesome. My personal favorite because they do a lot of damage and you gain access to stuff like Thunder Thrust, which can kill metal slime-type enemies in one hit. Trust me, Danica, you're going to want to get spears for the Hero or axes for Yangus just for those kind of abilities because levelling up in late game can be a chore without them.
@Dragonstar: Duskblade! I've been wanting to play one of those so badly, ever since I saw the class in PHB2. I love that they have a solid spell list, full BAB, and interesting abilities. I think the next time we do a D&D campaign I'll make a Duskblade. Trouble with me, though, is always choosing a race. I've wanted to play a Nezumi so badly lately, but with the CON and DEX bonuses I'd rather go with an Incarnum class for that.
Oh lord, Gigagashi is POWAH. I never found a lot of use for it, but then again by the time I had it I was in the bonus dungeon, hehe. I went with swords for the Hero my first time through, but decided on spears from then on. Thunder Thrust and Executioner together = LOTS of dead King Metal Slimes!
I'm on level 40 now, and am starting to level up my Hero's Spears skill, so I'm not planning on ever getting Gigagash (though he does have 100 Courage).
Yangus is a little too spread out. I started him in Clubs, then moved to Scythes, and now that he has 100 I'm moving him to Axes.
My Jessica specializes in Whips, now working on Staves and Sex Appeal, and Angelo, who I started with Fisticuffs, I moved to Bows and Charisma.

A contest that everyone can get into.. hmm.. tough call. Maybe Design a Monster, or a Magic Item..
Just got back from a short gaming session today--the Curse of the Azure Bonds campaign is chugging along, and the party has been more or less left open to its options. I managed to sneak Alacar in there for a later addition to the party!
This is a problem though--the current party NPC, Roland Braveheart, is a stereotypical knight-in-shining-armor Paladin. He's a total tank (crits on a 17+ with a greatsword, lots of HP), but I don't like playing him as much as I thought. I want to replace him with Alacar, my Fighter/Wizard/Spellsword.
Has anyone else come across this problem? You want to change NPCs, but you can't just easily kill the first one off? I don't like playing more than one NPC if I can help it, unless it's a certain adventure. Le sigh.

Yeah, I know what you mean about being able to switch characters. In Aerie, we have 3, so it's really kind of neat (since we don't play all at once), but in other campaigns that isn't the case... and sometimes, you just don't want to play a character.

I'm down with designing a magic item. Just say the word.
Mabey it wouldn't leave anyone out if it was open for just an imaginative item, that didn't have to have system information if it's creator didn't want to add that?
I'm sorry about the campaign thing. I typed it out (it was LONG) and then my power went out. I just haven't felt like typing the whole thing again.
It was really difficult, because the game is still in the early phases, and I leave as much as possible up to the players, so the entire write up was more like a list of random things going on in the world. It lacked the substance that players bring in, if that makes any sense.
I have another idea, too, that would be even more applicable-
Tonight, one of the Rise members and I were talking about what deck archetype each character would play, or would best represent their abilities- which got me to thinking... what if we did a contest to design a card around one of our characters?

Yes! It's so frustrating. I introduced this NPC into the D&Dgame because I loved the idea of him. This "japanese" monk who had stumbled onto these scrolls that summoned a "dragon spirit" which taught him magic(really, he is a warlock, but he doesn't realize it.) He's a cool character with a lot of humor and depth, and he's the partys official cook
But he simply does not fit into the game. He would be 10 times more fun to play as a character than an NPC, and he seems almost a destraction from the other, more fitting NPC's.. But I don't want to kill him off! I don't want to have him just run off for no reason or vanish. *shrugs*
I'm trying to keep my eye open for a good time for the party to split up. Soon, in my game, the party is going to meet a whole party of NPC's, which could give the perfect time for Hiochi to "split up" from the group.

Don't worry about me. I do actually own a copy of all three third edition core books for D&D. I also randomly have the 2nd edition Tome of Magic book. So, yeah, I could come up with a magic item pretty easily.
On the other hand, I do like the idea of building a deck around a character. So, just do what you guys want to do.

Im for making a character card and deck for said character...
I have no clue how to make items. Unless they could be MTG artifacts...
EDIT Wow, I post right after you ask us to.. crazy...
Well, the idea for the concept of a magic item would be something you see in an RPG, tabletop or otherwise. Something original. You don't have to follow a gaming system--just something totall unique.

I personally like the idea of making a card based off of a character- or perhaps, a series of cards. Like, a legendary creature to represent the character, a piece of equipment to represent one of their more memorable pieces of equipment, and another card of any type that relates to their abilities/backstory/etc.
Or, alternatively... we could do two contests- one open to everyone, and one open to members only.

I would like to do the "character series" of cards. Mostly because I don't know how to make "fair" RPG items. It would be fun to make a card off of one of my characters from the Collo or maybe from the novel I am attempting...IDK
