Well Danica, the graphics are amazing (especially during the flight scenes Mamelon was describing), but that's definitely not everything DQ8 has to offer. The battle system is engaging and challening, dungeons are large and easy to get lost in (which is a good thing, heh), the towns and cities are alive with people, there's hidden stuff to find everywhere, and the alchemy pot...*die* I had a lot of fun with that mutha.
People sell DQ8 short because it's "not a Final Fantasy" or it's "too English," but those are cop-out reasons, to be sure. There's a reason Dragon Quest is the world's premier RPG series; it's got everything it takes to be a classic over and over again =)
Hehe, well I don't literally mean it's good to get lost. What I mean is that the dungeons are so large and involved that you can lose yourself in them. That's not something a lot of RPGs can brag these days ~_~;;

Hmmm.. ok cuz i get frustrated as all hell when i'm lost and can't find my way someplace/out of somewhere... lol... and i don't like being frustrated lol.
what kind of battle/movement style should i expect? like FFIV or KH1 or something else entirely??? Oh btw I'm now in the Coliseum for KH1... stopped at the point where he said "here you go... the trials will begin" and I was like "No.. i need a break" lol .. So yea next time I play, i'll be doing that....
Just some stuff goin on that's made me not quite feel like gaming lately...
Hehe, sorry! I just don't have fond memories of Kingdom Hearts myself. It doesn't mean your playthrough's going to be an exact replica of mine =P I tend to suck at action RPGs that aren't named Ys, yanno.
dont worry, once you enter the workforce, you can game every night.

You really can't get away.
I've tried.
I still gotta say, Pool of Radiance is the king of old-school RPGs.
This game has been long since considered 'Abandonware', so I'm going to post the game up for download with instructions on how to play if anyone wants
edit: I have a question about our Tabletop peoples:
What's your opinion on random encounters? How often do you use them? Are they essential to your game (for leveling up purposes), or are they just to see how the party will do?

Don't use them very often. They usually seem pretty arbitrary, and tend to break up the flow of a story. If we just want to test out a certain situation, we do a sort of throw-away session with an adventure around it, sort of like a side story episode of a TV show.

[16:23] Alacar Leoricar: maybe if you do it'll make the porn more meaningful
Let's see here - while the ifrst console RPG I ever really played was Dragon Warrior on my NES, the one that actally hooked me on D&D (and the Forgotten Realms itself) was Eye of the Beholder on my old IBM 486. I still go back and play it once in a while.
So I'm finally going to be playing in a D&D campaign again, this time in the Forgotten Realms, now that my schedule has opened up. I get 8,000 xp to play with to start, so I'm rolled up an Air Genasi (+1 Level Adjustment) Duskblade (PHBII). After rolling up stats in front of the DM and applying the racial bonuses (+2 Dex & Int) and penalties (-2 Wis & Cha):
Str - 16
Dex - 16
Con - 14
Wis -13
Int - 19
Cha - 11
Once I hit 10,000 xp (probably will before the game starts - we have a deal with the store owner where we play that we recieve 5xp/dollar spent in the store) I'll have a 20 Int... that's some nuts in the bonus spell department!

Is the Duskblade INT dependant? I thought it was CHA, but it's been a while since I looked...
That's a neat way to get experience, actually. I like it when characters can progress in different ways, rather than just always killing crap until they magically level up.

hmm, digging around in my room last night, I found Dragon Warrior: Monsters for GB. I thought this game was boring back when I played it so I assume it was a cheap game trying to make money off of the series? Or better yet, it was just stealing a name?
It seemed to be stealing ideas from pokemon, but I'm not sure when it was made.

It's a valid Dragon Quest (for the sake of clarification- Dragon Warrior is the title of the pre DQ8 Dragon Quest games released in the US.) spin-off. And it's not a cheap game, it's actually a very large franchise in Japan, with the fourth title slated for DS soon.
It didn't take it's ideas from Pokemon, actually. The concept of catching and raising monsters has been in the Dragon Quest series longer than Pokemon has even existed, starting back in Dragon Quest 5 for the SNES. The Dragon Quest monsters series was developed in order to better support this concept, for the fans of monster-hunting that popped up while playing the SNES DQ games.

Yep, it's INT based - otherwise I would have chosen a different outsider.
As for the XP, it's something that my old DM who ran his own shop did - buy a pack of Magic (which I would have done anyhow), get 20xp... just kind of that extra incentive to shop at the store instead of online - even though it may be a little more expensive, it's very very important to support small businesses in your community and you get a nice little kickback in return. That's why I do it for the guy whose store I run the game in. Just a nice little bonus.

Speaking of Dragon Warrior, I just found my copy of 1 and 2 for the GB. From the looks of it, I've already beaten 1 and I have no clue about 2. I think I just kinda stopped in the middle of it. I'll probably pick it back up if I get more free time.
Also, get this. I was reading a Wikipedia article about DW/DQ last night, and appearantly, there is a law that prohibits new games in the series to be released on any other day than Sat. or Sun. to prevent massive work and school absences. Yeah, I can see that happening. (<--not sarcarsm)

Mamelon has offered XP for keeping character journals or writing backstories before, but that's one I haven't heard before. It is cool, though.
Yeah, the DQ law thing is hilarious, and one of the first bits of trivia a DQ fan brings up when someone starts to gushing about FF (which, while popular, is not nearly the powerhouse franchise it is in States). Seriously, if I had a dime for each time Josh brought up that law, I wouldn't be hanging around MTGS, that's for sure! I could hire people to do it for me.

Actually, I would never hit him, even jokingly. He's too cute. But anyway, no doubt we are scaring the heteros, so I'll reel it in.
So, my roleplaying is officially over for the summer
I always hate this time of year. It probably won't be till the next school break that we get another chance to game.
That's really quite depressing.
