@Mamelon: Heh, I got a chuckle out of seeing that smilie. That's the normal reaction. The people that actually like it (like a friend of mine) scare me a little.
So, anybody played Deadly Towers? Or is it too far back in the "wayback" machine?
And just to stir up controversy, 'cause I know Photon at least probably wants to smack this person, this was the last post in the "What next-gen console are you getting?" thread:
The PS3 is really expensive, but Final Fantasy 13 would almost make the purchase of one worth the money. The only games I really seem to get into nowadays are RPGs, and they don't get much better then Final Fantasy.
And big thanks to Crimson! I followed the dirrections on that link and now my PS2 is working perfectly.
I always take great care of my gaming platforms, but this was one of the first gen PS2s. Hehe, it's when they nearly the size of shoeboxes (I.E. old). So it's great to get her working again.

LOL. So true. I want a PS3 myself but it's not really for FF13 as much as it is for stuff like Heavenly Sword and DMC3 among other things. FF13 just happens to be on the console - which means I'll probably end up getting it (and the other games associated with it *blitz* :rolleyes:) somehow.
Edit: Odds are Tri-Ace will blitz the PS3 with good RPG's too let alone other companies like Namco and Nippon Ichi.

What platform was it for? The name sounds familiar, but I somehow doubt I've played it (although I was quite a fan of the various Capcom Disney titles as a kid, particularly Ducktales and Rescue Rangers.)
I think this means that the bars need lubricated or there's a worn belt in there, but I don't want to take it apart and see. But...Lunar 2...*cry*
I know. It's sad, because Lunar 2 is our anniversary game, and our anniversary is only 18 days away... so it looks like we won't be playing it this year.
Yeah, and I've really been wanting to play Lunar2 lately. Aw well, I'm sure soon enough I'll get up the gumption to do something about it and I might get it working again. Actually, I'll probably have to because I've been wanting to play Persona 2 as well and it's one of those games that won't work with the console. I need to finish my second playthrough!
@Deadly Towers: I remember that game! I rented it a lot when I was a kid, but I could never really figure it out. I always ended up getting into a situation I couldn't handle and having to start the game over, which in NES terms generally sucks.
As a random point of interest, who else here has played the NES game Faxanadu? I adore that game.
@Omna: Erm...I can't say as though I remember the title, but if it's a Capcom/Disney game I bet it's very playable.
@FF13:...Oh my good lord, please don't get me started. I'm already bristled and ready to strike when the FF12 ego-stroking begins on the 31st because I know as soon as that game is released, all the other awesome games we saw over the year just magically won't exist and all the press coverage will read something like "OMG NEW FF GAME SAME THING YOU PLAYED ELEVEN TIMES BEFORE LOLZORZ."
I played alittle of the ff12 at comic-con. I'm not sure how it was set up, but it ran a little fast for me, when I had no idea what buttons did what or who was good with spells, attacks, and why the wall had the bad breath ability.
I might pick it up after its been out for a good while, used. Same thing with ps3.
my old ps2 needs a cleaning but is running fine. Tho I' going to go get that compressed air gun anyways.

You really can't get away.
I've tried.
It was probably set in "real time mode" Sliver. You can run FFXII in two modes, "real time" goes extremly fast, and plays almost like an adventure game. You can also play the entire game in a slower, more traditional, turn based sequence. I prefer the turn based myself, but I'm sure that some people will enjoy the chaos of real time mode.
I personally prefer turn-based RPGs, though it is fun to go chaotic like that sometimes. I loved FFX because of its sleeeeek combat/leveling up system.
But I hated its damn Blitzball.
Anyone else have that problem?
So.. tomorrow's the day of my adventure with my D&D group. I need to come up with Drow. Like, lots of them. I need to make like 4 squads or combinations of squads of Drow that will be a challenge to 6 level 11s and 2 level 12s. Any help would be hot, though I don't need all specifics. Just a list of what kind of Drow I should throw at them.
I don't know of any minigame at all that's fun after the first thirty times, and Blitzball's not really that exciting to begin with. (It looks like a sports game, but doesn't play like one, and it's far less deep than the card games that were present in previous games, though those were only winners to a certain extent themselves.)
@Deadly Towers: I remember that game! I rented it a lot when I was a kid, but I could never really figure it out. I always ended up getting into a situation I couldn't handle and having to start the game over, which in NES terms generally sucks.

You probably won't believe this, but...
My MOM beat Faxanadu.
Yes. When I was around 8-9, we had Faxanadu, and for some reason she (in her 30s) got interested in playing it. We were playing the same save file, and eventually I ended up using the wing boots to skip some part, so we got to the end, but without the sword or armor or something you're supposed to have. The last boss kept thoroughly trashing us. So eventually, my mom ignores all strategy and goes on a berserker rampage, just standing next to the thing without trying to dodge and just repeatedly mashing attack. She killed it with one hitpoint left. So yeah, my mom beat Faxanadu.
That is still one of the funniest stories I can think of in my video-gaming career, and something I will always remember. Fear the mad skills of the soccer mom.
I prefered the card game from 8 I think, then 9's. This sphere break bs in ffx-2 just annoys me. and its the best of all the mini games I've found in ffx2.
Give me blitz. It was really just a minigame developed to deal with the "new" FF ability of swimming.
I probably enjoyed it because it wasn't so much of a sports game.
It actually reminded me of magic. I had creatures with certain abilites attacking my opponent. semi luck, semi team construction and development.

I actually like real time RPGs, Im excited to hear that XII has the option of being Real time, I might actually finish this one.
(the only Turn based RPGs I have finshed are FF4 and KOTOR 1&2)
I loved KH, KHcom and KH2... all of which are real time

I probably will play through the whole game through the slower mode first then finish the game that way then ill probably will try to finish the game again with real time mode because ill probably will get used to the game as a whole when i finish it the first time. I just got back from clinicals phew it seem like it was a longer day then usual mostly because i was in operating rooms learning how to operate the C-arm(its an x-ray machine that surgeons use when they do surgical operations on patients) from like 7am to 3:00pm a pretty long day but just one more day tommorrow then i get to have a long weekend yay.

I prefer turn-based rpgs as well. Real-time chaos is fun too, but I like turn-based a bit more.
As for Blitzball, at first, I absolutely hated it! I went so far as to call it the worst minigame ever. But after getting the hang of it and getting good, I started to like it more.
FF8's card game is definitely one of the best. Its so easy to get into and you can reap some good rewards from it as well.
Yes. When I was around 8-9, we had Faxanadu, and for some reason she (in her 30s) got interested in playing it. We were playing the same save file, and eventually I ended up using the wing boots to skip some part, so we got to the end, but without the sword or armor or something you're supposed to have. That is still one of the funniest stories I can think of in my video-gaming career, and something I will always remember. Fear the mad skills of the soccer mom.
Ah good old nes games. Wow thats pretty impressive because I remember that game was pretty hard. Well pretty much the adventure/rpgs i actually played were crystallis, faxandu, dragon warrior 1-4, kickle cubicle and i even played princess tomato for the nes there is probably alot more though.
Hey hey, I don't hate FF12. Like I said before, it's got a lot going for it in that Hironobu Sakaguchi wasn't involved in the development (he's where all the staleness came from) and Uematsu isn't doing the soundtrack (ditto). I'm a big fan of the Tactics/Vagrant Story team, so yeah, I guess I'll play it eventually. It just isn't high up on my list of priorities at all.
As I've stated before, what pisses me off about Final Fantasy games is kind of twofold. First of all there's the hype. When a truly great game like, say, Xenosaga 3 comes out, it's always very popular but you'd never tell from the reviews and the general shoulder-shrugging reaction most intarweb people give it. But when a FF title comes out, it's bedlam in the US. There's an explosion of fanfiction, amateur reviews, and brand-spanking-new Livejournal layouts to celebrate the latest in a "venerable" series. FF games tend to steal the spotlight from games more deserving of it. Have you heard anyting about Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Kuzunoha Raidou vs. The Army of Ultimate Power? Probably not, even though it's going to be released in the US in four days. MegaTen is a more respected series in Japan than FF, so the localization of the first Devil Summoner game should be a big deal, but it isn't. Why? Because Kuzunoha Raidou is being released in the same month - the same MONTH as FF12.
The other thing...they're just not difficult games. FF games get an awful lot of attention for being what is essentially an entry-level RPG series. A lot of friends of mine had played nothing but Final Fantasy and, at my behest, picked up Dragon Quest or MegaTen games and put them down immediately. Their reasoning? "It's too HAAAAAARD!!!!four" So yeah, that gets on my nerves, too. Generally, I don't touch my FF games anymore because they don't offer me a challenge, whereas the other series I own still present a challenge to me even after I've played them dozens of times.
That said, I'd like to add that I own the entire series save FF11. I've bought these games, so I can't actually hate them. Ask Photon; I play RPGs just about every free moment I have, and I've played a library full of 'em. So take my opinions with a grain of salt; I might roll my eyes at the FF series, but I could still tell you the Japanese name of any monster or character and their full stats, as well as talk along to the script of the SNES games in perfect harmony, Ted Woolsey awkwardness duly ignored. And after that mouthful...
@Mr. Stuff: OHEMGEE we have the same story! Well, my mom found the Dragon Slayer and all that, but she adored Faxanadu. She played it obsessively, actually, to the point where my brother and myself couldn't get in even a few minutes to play it ourselves. And yet she still has to ask me to get her through the misty branches level O_o;;
My mom used to be really into RPGs when I was younger, around the SNES and early Playstation days. She even conquered Star Ocean 2 before I could, but was thoroughly confused by some of the endings she got ^__^;;
And this leads me to another question: If you could see one NES or SNES-era RPG remade for a newer console, which game would you choose?
I'll answer my own question later. For now I have a date with some hot tea, a cinnamon bun, and some Samurai 7.
That's funny, my mother was really into the original Zelda. She never beat it, but she loved it.
Ethersphere; I completely understand your opinion on FF. I feel the same way about Grand Theft Auto. It's great in a game where you can do a lot of stuff, but if you can't do it well, what's the point?

Official Character Sheet Shredder of DAMNIT
DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
And this leads me to another question: If you could see one NES or SNES-era RPG remade for a newer console, which game would you choose?
I'd choose Pokemon. If I can't choose that, I'd choose... Hmm. Earthbound, I think, would be a lot of fun on a modern console, but wouldn't gain much, and might lose a lot of its charm. The Breath of Fire titles might also be cool, since I like the characterizations.
Hopefully I didn't/don't offend with the preceding post, by the way. Think of it this way; I like Kamigawa block a lot and think it has a lot to offer the game of Magic. I hate Mirrodin because I felt it stunted the play environment and was a generally boring set. Others feel that Kamigawa was a waste of cardboard and that Mirrodin is Urza's reborn. We're both right and we're both wrong.
As for remakes, I have a list. Prepare thyselves!
ActRaiser: An excellent Enix game that's even innovative by today's standards. I think that with a move to 3D and an expansion of the creation system, this could be an awesome remake. On the Gamecube, of course ^_~;;
Romancing SaGa 2 and 3: For obvious reasons. Anyone who's played Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song for the Ps2 knows that a remake can be a complete reimagining of a game's look, feel, and impact, and I think the other two Romancing SaGas need the same attention the first one got. Especially since I'm playing the translation of RS3 right now and loving it.
Rudra no Hihou: Better known as Treasure of the Rudras for those who've emulated it. An exciting game that shows the innovation Square is capable of if they put their heads together. A unique spell system and immersive storyline that deserves a re-telling.
Lufia: I just don't think that Taito should've given up on this series after only four installments. With a graphical overhaul, maybe in cel shading style, and a re-worked soundtrack with an expanded battle system, Lufia could be an amazing remake.
Arcana: A spiritual successor to the Japan-only dungeon crawler "Dinosaur," Arcana was a really fun game that was just too damn short. Reworking the storyline and making battles faster would be a dream come true if Arcana were redone for a handheld system.
Faxanadu: Yeah, you saw it coming. I've dreamed of a Faxanadu remake for a while now. Valkyrie Profile-inspired play on a 32-bit system with new areas to explore, an actual story presence, and a redone script to remind the player that yes, this is a Dragon Slayer game would be awesome. Better yet, redo it for the Gamecube or something and give the soundtrack (which is exceptional even now) a retooling!
That isn't a complete list, either. If we're still discussing this in a day or so, I'll post more.
So, anybody played Deadly Towers? Or is it too far back in the "wayback" machine?
