Favorite console RPG? Easily Tales of Symphonia, one of the only really good RPGs for the gamecube. I really need to find a used copy somewhere for cheap. It's such a great game.
Totally, although I so wanted to beat Colette's voice actress to death. Who were you favorite characters from it?
I always had a party of Lloyd (usually out of conveniance since he tends to be higher leveled), Presea, Raine, and Regal. I liked Zelos, though, too.
Edit: Trying to identify the characters in your new banner- so far I have- Ed, Ein, Nabeshin, I think Winry, Menchi, Chiyo-chan, Chi, Mint, Haruharu Haruko, Peropero, and Agent Paper, but the rest I can't figure out...a lthough the girl with the umbrella looks familiar... I think I know the anime she is from, but can't recall the name... Ai or Aoi something.
I thought I'd drop my head in here after pretty much dying out. (I guess that bit about a girl selling flowers wasn't as far off as I thought )
First I do have to say that the D&D group that I was a part of pretty much fell apart after the third meeting. It's now a full-fledged improv-comedy league. Don't get me wrong - I love that stuff... but it's totally wrong with the people that are trying to do that. Hence I've been doing nothing but dealing with console RPG's right now. Currently waiting to get Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria in - and yeah I know I'm late but I had a few bills to pay first.
Now to the important part of commenting on other people's stuff!

What is everyone's favorite console RPG?
Hmm... this changes a lot. So I'm just gonna call it a straight tie between Xenosaga, Valkyrie Profile, and FF's 4 and 8. And if Castlevania's count, I'd throw in God of War too - what with the puzzles and massive amounts of undead destruction.
My favorite character would have to be the ninja chick, Sheena. I think (vaguely remembering) that my party was usually Lloyd, Kratos (when available, if not, then Genis), Sheena, and Rayne. Though, I think later in the game, I used Collette a lot and had her at a really high level. There were so many little details in that game that I loved though, like how they kept the watermelon/beach thing intact, even though it's a Japanese cultural thing.

I'm gonna have to wait a bit on Silmeria, also. Makes me sad. Stupid bills. Oh well, I have the OST to listen to, at the very least.
Does God of War have a system of character growth? The only reason I included Castlevania was because of SotN/AoS's leveling system and heavy RPG elements. I wouldn't include most of the canon CV games, although they are all awesome.

Ah, Sheena/Shiina. Josh used her a lot, but I never got into using her. I didn't really care for summoning. I wanted to like Colette, but I just couldn't. I always went out of my way to avoid having her end up with Lloyd at the end. The game is very good, and I love anything like that. You might also like the Star Ocean series, as it plays very similarly and has all sorts of details like that in it- and it's even more complex from a system standpoint than the Tales games.

God of War's system, if I remember correctly, is a experience-based leveling system but Kratos' weapons also level up with how many orbs you get as well. Plus as you upgrade the weapons you get to perform longer combos that deal more damage but get increasingly difficult to perform.

Wow, this thread's activity jumped! Glad to see it. I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the new friends and members; it's good to see some new faces. For those who don't know me, I'm ethersphere (Ether or E for short, or just Josh =P) and I'm the resident console RPG fanatic. Seriously. I am. *Twitch*
@Xenosaga: Well Psychoburner, it's a mixed bag with those three games. The first and second episodes are really cutscene heavy, yeah, but the story kept me going through all of that and it ended up being a really satisfying experience. I'd recommend playing through those first just so you know everything that's going on in episode 3, and I HIGHLY recommend playing ep.3 because it's one of the best RPGs I've ever played, period.
as for favorite console RPG...wow, I can't pick just one. I have a huge list populated by a lot of different games. I guess I could narrow it down to my top five, though. I no particular order:
Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne
Dragon Quest VIII / IV / VI (three-way tie)
Tales of Symphonia
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Xenosaga episode 3 / Xenogears (another tie)
So yeah. If I had to compile a list of all the console RPGs I consider favorites, it'd be a really, really long list O_o;;
Ah, Mutants and Masterminds. I've looked into that system. It's one of those games that uses sort of a proto-True20 system right, like Blue Rose?
Aside: Ha, it figures. Whenever we were talking about tabletops, someone would always complain that they had nothing to contribute to the topic. So we start talking about console games, and we get the reverse. Freakin' irony.
I don't have any experience with Blue Rose (although a friend of mine is a fan), but M&M does use a d20esque base. I don't know what a True20 system is, but assuming it's one where only d20s are used, then M&M does qualify as such.
I guess I could contribute something to the console discussion... I've played Devil May Cry on the PS2 for about a total of six hours. I'm sure others will disagree with considering DMC as an RPG and I can't say I would argue with them
Yeah i dont blame everyone for not having a favorite rpg but rather having a top 5 or top 10 list instead or something. I actually have a top 10 myself but the reason why i was saying chrono trigger was my favorite was mostly because i couldnt think of anything else at the time considering i was up pretty late studying. Anyway here is my top 10 list:
No particular order.
1. parasite eve
2. dragon warrior 4
3. dragon warrior 3
4. phantasy star 4
5. breath of fire 2
6. chrono trigger
7. Final fantasy 4
8. wild arms alter code f
9. final fantasy 7
10. the 7th saga
@aranan: Well i would consider devil may cry to be an adventure rpg type of game similar to like secret of mana or soulblazer or something
Sorry it's been so long - I've had a lot of stuff goin on IRL, but that's cofeehouse talk. Let's talk games (btw, i did love Tales of Symphinia).
Wednesday I'm playing an Air Genasi Duskblade. He currently has no name. While I love the Duskblade class, if you don't get your rest at night having no spells is very un-fun. And when you're fighting plants, shocking grasp isn't that good either. But more on this later.
Thursday night, wherin I'm currently running City of the Spider Queen, it was almost a TPK. The party once again bypassed multiple rooms in a level to go to the boss, and it came back and bit them in the ass. It's the end of chapter 1, and they head straight in to battle a mini-boss, a Vampire Drow Cleric 11. They begin to have a tough time of it, when the sounds of batle draw in her lover and adopted daughters to join them. Two flame-strikes later, one cleric is dead, the other cleric is at -6 and the barbarian is at +6. the rogue just made his save on the 2nd one (after a 1 on the first) but was still low. The knight went down to Slay Living. The Paladin and the Monk were otherwise occupied on the other side of the room with another vampire. And did i mention the Huge Fiendish Displacer Beast? I decided to take DM pity and have one Drow Cleric use Slay Living on her sister (the adventure did say one would kill the other at the first opportunity - drow are evil like that). They pulled it out after that, but just barely. But the cleric who did die was the only one who could do any raising, they can't teleport out due to a permanent Forbiddance spell on the House, and they're out of resources. And the Vampires are in their coffins regenerating...
Back to the other game - I'm announcing a "Name the PC" contest. My Tuesday Air genasi Duskblade has no name - right now he's just called cloud or smurf by the barbarian... here's a bit of the backstory:
"_____" was born to nobility in the city of Calimshan with his twin sister, "_____". The blue skin immidiately identified him as having the blood of the djinn... and those children are killed on sight for fear of the return of the Djinni rule over the city. To save the babies, their mother sent them to live with the elves of the north, who trained them in combat and spellcasting. He became an accomplished fighter, and while he was well versed with the traditional scimitar of his homeland, when times called for it he preferred to swing a greatsword that was larger than even he was! (He wields a large greatsword using the monkey grip feat - that's where the FFVII nickname came into play). His sister was jealous of his fighting prowess, and even though in reality she was just as good, she began to loathe her twin. When they came of age, they returned to Calamshan in disguise. Their parents welcomed them back with open arms, but one day while cloud was sparring with the guards his disguise was revealed. They liked the boy, so rather than expose him for what he was and send him to the executionor's block, he was forced to leave by cover of night. Whenever someone asks the family where he is, they just say that he's off "verifying the accuracy of the palace maps". His sister, meanwhile, has her own schemes...
Cloud stands 5'9", with dark blue skin and pale white hair. A slight breeze seems to follow wherever he walks, moving his cape even on a windless day. He has ranks in both Craft(Cartography) and Knowledge(Geography) to allow him to make maps for the party, which he plans to return to the palace archives at the end of his exile. The barbarian used to make fun of him for not being big enough for his sword - until he scored a critical hit with a schocking grasp through it for massive damage on a Bulette. His sister looks very much like him, but she has pale. white skin and black hair with white streaks. His duskblade spells focus on air and evocation spells, hers on Necromancy. She is also an air genasi, but her skin color is just attributed to her being fair and beautiful.
So, in the vocie of a cheesy gameshow host - NAME! THAT! PC!

5. Final Fantasy X: arguably the best from the modern set
4. Tales of Symphonia: great storyline, solid system
3. Chrono Cross: awesome story, great system
2. Chrono Trigger: Almost flawless in every way
1. Final Fantasy VI: My favorite Final Fantasy
Haven't played much of anything else enough to qualify. Although Xenosaga is shaping up to be rather good.
Xenosaga is like Lord of the Rings, mind crushingly boring for the first little while, but it picks up and gets really good after that.

Official Character Sheet Shredder of DAMNIT
DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
If handhelds count as consoles and Pokemon counts as an RPG, I'm picking those games as my favorite RPG of all time. (Though on many levels the different generations are wildly different from each other, the experience is the same and they are superficially nearly identical, so I'm counting them as one game.) I feel as if a choice like Pokemon needs defending. First, the games' reputation is and was badly damaged by the unimpressive-at-best cartoon show based on the games, and the fact that they were targeted at a very young audience compared to most games. (The card game, which is of a very high quality as well, suffers for the same reasons.) They were also, admittedly, incredibly easy to complete regardless of playstyle, and the first generation (red and blue) was plagued by well-known exploits and a gross imbalances between certain game aspects. (Sleep moves, Psychic Pokemon, etc.) The later games improved on these weaknesses greatly.
Why, then, would I select these games as my favorites? First and foremost, like no other game I've played, the games allow a player to 'do it your own way'. Each game features dozens upon dozens of different pokemon characters to use, and especially in later generations of the game, most of the pokemon are massively customizible. As someone who prefers to do things in a bit of an offbeat way, even if the strategy isn't quite at the same level as the 'best' way to do something, this is massively appealing to me. Second, lurking beneath the relatively simple battle system was a massive and complex yet elegant system that determined how each pokemon's stats grew (a combination of their species, thier individual genes and which monsters they fought while you leveled them up.) While it was more that possible to completely ignore that system and blow through the game, there is one aspect of the game where paying attention to that sort of thing made a difference, which brings me to what I think may have been the games' strongest feature - multiplayer. The ability to fight your team of monsters against a friend's was massively satisfying. Lastly: like most RPGs, the games include clocks. I sunk well over six hundred hours into the games over the course of many years. I can't ignore games that provided me with so much entertainment.
For a more conventional console RPG, I pick FF6. (Many newer games sound like a lot of fun, but I'm not into video games as much as I was some years back; the last consoles I owned were an N64 and a Playstation that was already ancient when I got it.)

Yep handheld console rpgs count as well in my mind anyway. Yeah final fantasy 6 is a great game havent played it in awhile though and also gotta enjoy kefka's evilness and his diabolical laughter. I was thinking about getting it for gameboy advance whenever that comes out. Tonight im probably going to study some more and then play enchanted arms and try to get somewhat further in the game that game has gotten to be pretty hard though. Other then that not sure what else im going to do tonight but we will see.
Man.. making a dragon is LONG AND HARD. It's all muddled up and complex as hell in the monster manual. Not only that, I have to make a Dracolich. That means I have to apply the undead template and give a list of special abilities. But, after my hard work, I have it. I have Crimdrac, an Adult Male Red Dragon turned Dracolich.
Attached is the reference page I'm planning on using for the game.

Oh my freaking God, it's true. Making a dragon is such a headache, adding templates turns it into a migraine.

Well, True20 is a system that has it's origins in the d20 system. Before it became a genuine system, a sort of prototype version of the system was used in games like Blue Rose, and from what I have heard, Mutants and Masterminds. However, now True20 is it's own system with it's own core books and everything. It is really pretty good, too.

Kefka was your roommate in college? That might explain the megalomaniacal streak you seem to have. I'm not going to get into the psychological ramifications of being roommates with fictional megalomaniacs, though.
But, Kefka is an awesome villain.

But, on a side note, I did once beat Sephiroth at a game of Street Fighter. For those who want to know, make sure he doesn't bring his sword. I still miss my Super Nintendo...

This was back before he started the whole clown wardrobe thing. He used to dress very plainly- Hell, he was from Minnesota. But you know how it is in college. You start trying new things, and experimenting. I started dating guys, he starting wearing frilled collars and shooting up with Esper blood. Different strokes, I guess.

I didnt try that many things when i was in college. Yeah i know I am a boring person. I was extremely lazy though back in the my freshman years in college didnt study always stayed up late on weekdays before going to classes it was probably the most foolish thing i ever done. However it was only a wake up call so now i am doing pretty well academic wise. Although i am still lazy though just not as nearly as I used to be. It was pretty fun staying in the dorms though but got to be pretty crazy sometimes because people would pull the firealarms at like 5am in the morning.
I just got done designing a new RPG system (which is fairly setting-free) and having my friends roll up character, so to speak (even though no rolling is involved.) It's a lot like dogs of the vineyard or well, I can't remember the other game it's like, but suffice it to say that it's an alternative RPG.
I actually haven't gotten to writing the sourcebook yet, but now that I have a few example characters, I know what mistakes to avoid and what to emphasize.
Also, was Kefka really gay? I got the impression he was just turning up the creepy dial to 11. I don't recall anything explicitly gay from him. Perhaps the closest is his with with Leo?

THAT! PC!

I've finally lassoed the Moon!
Yes, I put the last name in just for the Lovecraft reference.

5. Final Fantasy X: arguably the best from the modern set
4. Tales of Symphonia: great storyline, solid system
3. Chrono Cross: awesome story, great system
2. Chrono Trigger: Almost flawless in every way
1. Final Fantasy VI: My favorite Final Fantasy
Haven't played much of anything else enough to qualify. Although Xenosaga is shaping up to be rather good.
Xenosaga is like Lord of the Rings, mind crushingly boring for the first little while, but it picks up and gets really good after that.
Attached is the reference page I'm planning on using for the game.

Kefka and I were roommates in college.
But, Kefka is an awesome villain.
Im told its possible, but would have to program the dice
He's really quite a sweetie, too. And he makes great no-bake cookies.
There isn't much of a difference if we are going by the opinions of the Christian Right.
