oh, and on a completely random side note: my girlfriend went to greece for the summer, and we were thisclose to having sex for three days straight meeting up in amsterdam for a weekend before work obligations and finances put a rapid end to our dream.
fortunately for me, she'll be back on thursday...

About religion: Wessel probably the only countries more religious than the US are Vatican City and ... Malta. Here in Malta a good part of the population is Catholic and there is a great push towards conformity.
Having said that, I don't believe in God, a god or anything along those lines. I take the Freudian stance that religion is a sort of wish fulfillment and a means of feeling safe in this tough world. I do respect believers however and think they do well in believing. At times when things start feeling ****ty (can you say that?) I wish that I had somewhere to turn to.
In short: I'm pretty much screwed up on the issue of religion
I don't see the need for religion. When things are ****ty (no, you can say it, lol) I look for a way to make it better, not to a god to make it better for me.

Yes but there are some things that you can't make any better. Particularly when facing loss and death

I don't thinks so. In India, they let cows wander through the streets because of their religion. In Iraq, there's a massive religious war going on (and since we happened to be in the neighborhood, we're down there trying to stop it). Israel and Palestine are warring over who gets the sacred place. I can think of a bunch of other examples like this.
I would argue that America is actually not that religious, we have a lot of people who don't really care all that much (from what I see) and just would answer to a survey like that, "Yeah, I'm Christian,", basically because it runs in the family (most people stick with the religion of their family). So we may have the highest percentage of religious people, but they generally aren't nearly as religious as many other places (that isn't to say we don't have a bunch of highly religious people too, but not an extrordinary amount compared to other countries).

Yes you're right. I should have replaced the word religious with Catholic. I really don't think that religions are such a bane to the world. At least for the people who believe.
G&E: You can always make your life better, even after loss and death. You look to the future and keep going forward. Those kind of things happen in life, a lot. It's just something you have to deal with and learn from. Praying to a god to help you will only make you more reliant on said god, not on your own strength.
Sorry if I offended anyone with my view.
Nice observation, HC. I've noticed that in my area, too. Most everyone says they're Catholic, but if you asked them what Lent was, most probably couldn't tell you. (I know what it was once, but I forget now.)
I'm currently studying different forms of paganism because I find it very interesting, but as for a REAL belief in any god or religion, I'd have to say I don't have one.

I wish I could believe, sort of. I mean, let's say it was guaranteed you were going to die soon. If you believe you can go to Heaven, you can accept it more easily. I don't really care what people believe, as long as it helps them and doesn't hurt people. I do have a problem with religions when it hurts somebody, like Scientology, or Christianity during the Crusades, or Islam with the terrorist attacks, etc.

Yeah, that pretty much describes me. I used to describe myself as half-half Jewish and Christian, because that's what my mother and father are, but since I've never been to church or temple, I don't really consider myself either. I sort of remember a couple of the Hewbrew words my mom recites at Passover, but no more than would anybody else who has been at a bunch of them.
I still say that when somebody I don't really know asks, but for a few years now I've been describing myself as atheistic/agnostic. Basically, it means I don't know a thing. Maybe there is no god, but if there is, I don't know what it is.
Yeah, the old paganistic religions were really interesting and cool, except that they were also completely unbelievable, at least to me.

So true. Part of the reason that the world is so messed up is that people are following a book written 2000 years ago.

first, apologies for my long post up there, but i wanted to defend my countrymen, since our country makes us look real bad.
going to catholic high school drove me to atheism. i was surrounded by people who claimed to be such "good" catholics while being the biggest asses you could imagine. it made me question the whole system of beliefs. then, i read anton la vey's "satanic bible." now, most of the book is trash, but one theme he touched on was the idea that most "god-fearing" people actually do not fear god at all. if you're not going to believe in something 100%, why claim belief in it at all?
i realized i did not need to "fear god" in order to be a good person. as i started reading up on other religions, it came to me that all religions are, for the most part, the same; the imagery and ritual may be different, but the bases are often quite similar.
so, now, i am an atheist. if there is anything that can approximate the idea of "god", it is the universe, and every single sub-sub-sub-...-sub-atomic particle in existence. in a way, then, each of us is part of god, and part god.

Hey, I want to make a [499] banner. My idea is that one of us creates a 600x100 JPEG image with their name written in in the style of their choice [which should only take up a bit of space] and posts it. Then someone else downloads it and does the same, until all (or most) of us have "signed" it. Then I'll stick a big [499] in the middle, so that it looks something like this:
What do you all think?

I actually like that idea a lot bert. Just, I wouldn't use it, cause I want to use my Star Wars banner for another month at least. But it also has the problem of people new joining the clan. Then they would have to sign it. If people leave (ex: Moxman), we have to delete them from the banner. So it's more work then it looks.
Sure, stuff like Snapping Drake and Goblin Piker are for limited. But Null isn't even playable against a 5 year old whose hand consists of a 6 of Clubs, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Chimney Imp, and a very large cumquat.
On a personal note, I think this is a very inapropriate topic for an online MTG forum. So now I'll start making fun of all of you.
1) I read in here that nerds are more likely to be atheist. That is quite possible for the fact that nerds tend to not live lives at all for the earlier fact of being made a fool at school and/or other public areas. They tend to WANT no life after death because of the tragic misfortunes in their current one. I am a nerd (come on I play magic ya dim wits ) I have a respect for a higher entity. I believe in a soul and a life after death. I have personally experienced things I would rather forget that Force me to say I 'know' rather than to say I 'believe.
2) "Most of America being Catholic" statement is going to be called false. less that half is Catholic for the descrace that the Catholics of many years ago that used the religion as a sense of government to bleed the rich and poor over the fear of damnation of their eternal souls. Most of the US will usually be branches off from the Protestant religion (if I am correct, been a while sence history class) Ex, Lutherans, calvanist, baptist, Methodist. America faught for freedom or religion to escape Catholicism.
Werd,
(I might be a bit wrong on some of the terms, just bare with me. )

how 'bout you? It was your idea. (that, and i'm, too lazy to start it myself ).
In other news: I tried out a new (budget) build of G/U/w aggro-control. It abuses Juniper Order Ranger with Patagia Viper and Supply. I also use Chord of Calling, Demand, and Congregation at Dawn for consistency.
