Well, it really wasn't that bad. You have to understand the gravity of the situation. I guess you would have had to been there, and for the buildup.
Roland has always been in this wierd situaton. You see, his wife is the chosen of his god. It's sortof like, dating the presidents wife or soemthing LOL. Whenever she died, the avatar of the god appeared and in this great solem ceremony, he asked for her remains to be set to sea.
This was sortof a test of faith on roland, who defied the wishes of his god, while he was standing right in front of him.
I could have gotten my abilities back by repenting at any point really, but I wanted to role play out the entire scanerio, it gave for some great character growth and interaction with the other pcs and npcs. You gota understand, that the entire party was a religious one. We had a plethora of various faiths represented and it proved for some deep roleplaying.
In other words, im not complaining. It was one of those times that defined the character. It was like his old life (vengefull, self-centered ranger) was conflicting with his newer self.
Ah, so it was a unique case for some character growth. Okay, that's a little different, then.
Speaking of religion in your games- how much does it come up? My games tend to be fairly low on religion, with it popping up in one or two individuals as something of a quirk.

Agreed. That sounds really cool actually.
As for religion in my games? Tons of it. Remember my custom Godborn character trait? (I'd give you the specs but I've lost them.) When you've got the sons and daughters of gods running around, you can't avoid conflict of faiths.
Yeah, we have tons of religion in our games. Thats why we love Forgotten Realms so much, because a large part of it is defined by it's gods. It's sortof like ancient Greek Mythology, where the gods are always meddling in the lives of mortals. I love it

Damn Greek gods. They're all like big drunken frat boys and sorority girls in the sky, if you ask me.
On a related topic- how many of you like to run in preconstructed campaign settings, and how many prefer to create your own homebrew worlds?

We do about 60-preconstructed//40-homebrew.
We have two detailed homebrew worlds which we play in. One is a traditional fantasy setting, where the old world went kaboom, and there was a massive magical exodous to this new planet via gate spells, dementional folding and such. The game is one of exploring and survival on an unknown planet.
The other one, is a homemade RPG based off Final Fantasy, The sourcebook my friend wrote is over 200 pages now, so it's pretty developed.
My Forgotten Realms game is about to get homebrewed as hell. There is a chain of events taking place, which will eventually result in the villan aquiring the "perfect wish" spell; one that will grant anything the villan wishes. I'm going to use this to make a alternate Forgotten Realms, sortof a What If? plotline, if that makes any sense.
My marvel game is so divergant from the standard Marvel universe, that it might as well be homebrewed.

Just call it "Age of Apocalypse", and it should be fine, lol.
I like homebrew, too. Some CS's are pretty neat, but others I don't care for as much. It sort of depends. Sometimes you like to interact with a premade world, but sometimes you like to get creative yourself. We run primarily homebrew in our games. Often times, the world data and history isn't as well fleshed out as say, Faerun, but specific areas in which the game takes place and key mythologies tend to be very VERY well constructed, which is part of the reason why our games are religion-lite- because it's usually only specific areas that recieve a lot of attention, and therefor, only one culture tends to be in the spotlight.

From a guy who actually converted Half-Life 1 (A PC first-person shooter) into a d20 Modern world (for 3+ PCs), I can tell ya that it's actually fun to have total creative control over a world, but since I had to follow a source material, I found that the limitations, while stifling sometimes (you can only fight so many headcrabs before I have to throw special ones at you) can breed even greater creativity.
Too bad we never finished the campaign though. It's a BIG campaign, which consists of one giant dungeoncrawling, gun-toting experience. Not a good campaign for Role-play, but Roll-play is okay. I try to keep a balance.
Most of the time I prefer homebrew to anything else. The only CS I've come to love is Eberron, because the feel of it just clicks with me. I do want to run an Eberron campaign eventually *pokes Photon* but only after we've finished with the four campaigns we're doing now O_o;;
For Wasted City, I came up with a lot of homebrew rules. For example, a Contact system like the MegaTen games and a different way to work the Occultist's scrolls-per-day nonsense. Sometimes you just want to fiddle with it and sometimes you look at a mechanic and think "guh...what?!"
As for religion...well, it's not like Photon or Mamelon know this because we haven't gotten that far into WC, but religion's going to play a pretty big role in it. So is an older campaign we've played extensively, for that matter.
Which leads me to a good question: Has anyone ever started up a new campaign with strong ties to an older one? Like a sequel or side-story, something of that nature. If so, how did it play out?
@ Ethersphere - Yes, we have done sequals to games. I hate sounding like a broken record, but the Swordcoast game with Roland in it, is just about to enter the "third book" of the series. The game has technically been going on for several years, but it's broken into distinct parts.
I love the concept of an ongoing saga like that, Shaharazad. Sorry if I missed that in an earlier post; it's been hard to keep up with this clan and the coffeehouse lately ^__^;;
I can't really reveal anything in case we ever play Wasted City again, but man....sequel ho!
Greetings to gamers one and all! I would like to humbly apply for friendship to thine wonderous gaming abode.
I started gaming way way back with Super Mario Bros. for the NES. I am a serious Nintendo whore and have loved every minute of it. I also enjoy PS2 and I love Rpgs probably more than any other game genre. Rpgs I've played include: Final Fantasy 1-X, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Earthbound, Legend of Dragoon, and Lufia 2. I've played more than that, but it'd take a while to list.
I'm always open to suggestions for new Rpgs to play, so feel free to throw one my way.
I also used to play the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000. After a while, my group and I just stopped playing and the increase of model price didn't help. There was also a time when I was to try my hand at D&D, but that never came to pass unfortunately.
That's just a little about me, and in closing, I'd like to add: That comic on the first page is freaking hilarious. Bravo.
Welcome aboard, Buzz! Photon will friend you up in the morning. I have to tip my hat to you for the Lufia icon, actually; it's an underrated series, and one I really wish would get just one more sequel before Taito gives up on it completely.
Speaking of Legend of Dragoon, I've been plodding through it myself lately. I started a week or two ago and got to the Moon that Never Sets today. I have to say...Miranda's grown to be one of my favorite characters. After seeing her fight her demons in the snowfield, I started to like her a lot more than I have. Of course, Lavitz will always be my favorite ^__^;;
I really didn't like Legend of Dragoon. It was something specififc that made me hate it, but I won't say what it is incase it spoils it for any of you who are playing it, and loving it.
Heh, well to be honest I didn't like Legend of Dragoon a lot at first either. The Additions system got on my nerves because I wasn't very good at it and the translation was/is HORRIBLE. I only picked it up out again out of boredom recently, and I dunno...there's something there that wasn't before.
LoD was supposed to be released a month before Final Fantasy 7, but the translation slowed it down by three years. I think that if LoD was released on time with a workable translation, it would've knocked FF7 out of the park. The thing that makes it a shame, though, is that LoD is one of those games that should've had a sequel. Not necessarily because of anything spectacular about it, but because there was a lot of promise for a solid battle system and a unique and engaging world that went to waste because it was the only game in the series. I think if there were a LOD2 where battles weren't so horribly slow, Additions could be custom-made or linked together, and people actually had magic at their disposal without having to go Dragoon, the series would've taken right off.
What is it you didn't like about the game, Shaharazad? You can PM it to me if you like.
EDIT: Mp3s are late, mainly because I can't settle on which ones to upload. Expect them tomorrow, people.
Legend of Dragoon and Wild ARMs were two games introduced to me by an old friend of mine. Never got into Legend of Dragoon, but I ended up loving Wild ARMs (honestly, though, that's thanks to Ethersphere).
Right now I'm playing Dragon Quest VIII. Anyone else play this game?

Mamelon, i'm going to be at some point.... hopefully before i leave i can get started, but I'm gonna be kinda busy and whatnot, packing and stuff... Got a lot to do... but yea, i bought it from Crimson Avatar so i'm gonna be playing it at some point this year at least...

By the way, we are really close to post 500. After 500 posts, we'll be starting a new thread- unless that happens after I get back to work, in which case it'll be popping up tomorrow morning.

Ahh Wild Arms. WA2 was the first RPG I've ever played. I have to say it seems cheesy now that I've played a bunch of other deeper RPGs but it was good in its own right.
Shaharazad: I'm also curious as to what the one reason why you hated LoD was. I thought it was pretty OK overall but there wasn't any particular thing that made me go meh to it, really.
Now a question for y'all: On reputation and the words of one good friend I'm thinking of picking up Magna Carta for the PS2. Any good words about it or warnings? Should I pick up Radiata Stories first instead? Any other good suggestions that fits the greatest hits price range that I don't already own? (What I do own: SO3, All Xenosaga (including pre-order of ep II), FFX, FFX-2, Kingdom Hearts I and II, used to own Dragonquest but obv didn't like it enough to keep it)

Ah, I have so many good memories of Wild Arms 2. It was miserably translated, but still.
Radiata Stories is a good light-hearted adventure. I've heard (although I have no way to back it up, unfortunately) that Magna Carta is very difficult, and somewhat awkward to play through. However, what is difficult and awkward for some can be quite enjoyable for others.
So it really depends on your tastes. Radiata Stories is comparable to other Tri-Ace games, such as Star Ocean, but also maintains enough of it's own identity to stand out on it's own. Plus, Lenneth Valkyrie is a secret character in it.
Meanwhile, I can't believe you didn't like DQ8. And you call yourself a gamer.

Well it wasn't exactly that I didn't LIKE it. It was that it had absolutely zero replay value for me at this point. Heck I haven't picked up some of my RPG's that I do have (that I've already played thru) in about two years. I tend to wear them out very quickly. The good news: Managed three complete play thrus on DQ8 before I got bored with it. And that includes the post ending bonus dungeons.
And yeah Lenneth is just a sexy addition in any game.

Ah, I see. I was under the impression you got it, played a bit, and got rid of it. Still, it's such a good game. I think it would probably have a lot of replay value, since you can shape your party into different builds each time, but that only appeals to so many people.
Lenneth is my personal goddess. I want to be her when I grow up.

@Crimson: Well, from what I know of Magna Carta, the Ps2 installment isn't much different. The only complaint I've seen a lot of is that it's too short. Although people said Mother 3 was going to be a short game and it totally wasn't, so hey *shrug*
As far as Radiata Stories goes, you've seen people in here and the 'house singing its praises. It's an awesome game, but chock full'o humour, so only pick it up if you like that sort of thing. If you've ever played a Lunar game you'll more than appreciate Radiata Stories. Ditto if you've ever played through a Star Ocean.
Plus, Lenneth is awesome. Nibelung Valesti is so much cooler as a Volty Blast than a Purify Weird Soul =P
While we're on the subject, I finally finished Legend of Dragoon this morning. I have to say, I must've been sour towards it when I was younger (which was, not surprisingly, when I sucked at it), because I enjoyed the game a lot this time through. I do have to say, though...game companies NEED to hire professional voice actors for their games! GUH!
Ah, so it was a unique case for some character growth. Okay, that's a little different, then.

He was just making double sure and testing it for bugs and glitches, of course.
So... anyone here excited about Xenosaga Episode III being released soon?
GUH!
