Does anyone here think that Coldsnap is a bad set? I actually think it's pretty damn good, and if you think it's bad, then think of Saviors and realize it could've been a lot worse.
I don't think it's a bad set, I just think it's fairly average. I've said this before: I didn't like Ice Age because it was so incredibly awesome. I like Ice Age because I learned to play when it was out. I grew up with it. It's nostalgic. Coldsnap tried to recapture that feeling and give it new life. That's not nostalgia. That's slapping a new coat of paint on the old and twisting it into a wholly different beast. I mean, Snow mana? Snow creatures? That's ridiculous. It'd have been much, much more flavorful if they were snow-covered. Just like the basic lands. But no, they can't fit 'Snow-covered Legendary Creature -- Human Lord' on a type line. Snow mana is just a silly effort to streamline what was clear cut before.
There are only a few cards in CS I really actually want. (Adarkar Valkyrie, that's about it) Other than that, I'm gonna let it be. It doesn't appeal to me. Nothing jumped out at me, really.
And I'm SO TOTALLY PISSED that they're putting 1 Swords to Plowshares in the precon. Now everybody and his grandmother's gonna be RFGing everything in sight. Sure it'll still be a slight chase rare but that kind of removal should never grow on trees. I will actually be kind of glad when they take them off the shelves.

I think it's on par with their latest creations. Somewhere along the power of Saviors. Has some good stuff or potentially good stuff (Valkyrie, Ohran Viper), a potentially expensive SB card (Jester's Scepter) and a WHOLE bunch of Timmy and Johnny cards. There's the obligatory good uncommon (That 1G 5/5 Trampler I think will be the one here... tho I think the Blizzard Specter isn't bad either). The alt-cost cards will obviously have some impact but it will range depending on the card (Soul Spike MIGHT be the best even tho it looks SOOO weak). And besides that constructed won't see much from this.

Didn't Wizards say those would be not legal for tournament play? Or is that just Standard play (which would be obvious)?
In either case, I'm thankful the local group already called them off limits. They're treating them like gold-bordered cards since its been so long since these have been released. Besides the only Legacy/Vintage tourneys that happen here happen like twice a year anyway so it won't affect anything but casual. And casual would be a pain with STP running rampant... (technically 8 of them if you count Condemn).
Please. That was a better than average set, though not extremely good. It had the Warchiefs, Eternal Dragon, Stifle, Decree of Justice, and of course, the almighty storm cards.
Saviors was fine, but it just didn't have the impact they wanted it to have. It wasn't a Spike set, more like a Johhny set
Practically half the cards relied on you having more cards in hand than your opponent(s). And the fact is that not every color has the means to get that (sweep was a rather lame way of doing that), and it forces you to hold back on your spells. That's all well and good in control, but not in quick aggro decks. Only a few cards have seen play from Saviors, and for good reason: it was humongously underpowered.
There are only a few cards in CS I really actually want. (Adarkar Valkyrie, that's about it) Other than that, I'm gonna let it be. It doesn't appeal to me. Nothing jumped out at me, really.
Well, there's a couple cards I want from this set.
4x Dark Depths
4x Sunscour
?x JokulMorder (I really just want him because he's a leviathan. I leviathans)
Nothing really special I guess. But there's a few rares in there that deserve my johnnyific attention.
@Mortal Wombat, I liked Scourge too. It was the set that I drafted for my birthday. There, I pulled a Holo Dragon Tyrant and other such dragons for my dragon deck. (Lol, Yukora. You said I wasn't a Timmy ... Lol ...)

I'm back from the prerelease! What a day. Fair warning, this will be a long post.
As I mentioned earlier, my 12 year old brother made enough money to go with me, so my mother agreed to drive us the two hours up to Columbus. I got up at 7:45 (after staying up 'till 3:00), and re-read the spoiler one more time before getting ready and heading out the door. I tried printing it to take with us, but it was taking too long, so I only got about half of it printed out. We left the house about 8:50am, played Madlibs on the way in the car, and arrived at the convention center close to noon.
My friend Mike from college met me there, and it was good to see him and talk again. I had to help my brother get signed up for a DCI number and such, and explain the process of registration and deckbuilding. He performed admirably for a relative beginner in that regard, actually.
A quick aside - I never thought I'd see so many Adarkar Valkyrie. I registered one, Mike registered one, I got one, Mike got one, my brother got one, I played against two others, and I opened a second one in my prize packs!
Round 1:
This is the round I remember the least of. The first game I mulliganed to 5, pitching a no-land and an all-land hand. I lost that game due to the card disadvantage, and was able to swarm for the win in the last two games. The third game, I think I played Nishoba, Gargoyle, and Snowcrusher all in a row. Adarkar Valkyrie failed to make an appearance. 2-1.
Round 2:
My opponent starts out by removing two green cards to play an Allosaurus Rider on his first turn. Ouch. Luckily, I draw and play Ohran Viper by my third turn and shut that down. We end up staring each other down for a while, but he eventually draws a Goblin Rimerunner to let his Allosaurus through for the win.
Game two, I win by virtue of Juniper Order Ranger. That card is not fair in any sense of the word.
Game three, he casts a first-turn Allosaurus Rider again! Once again my Viper comes down by turn four to save me, elliciting a few choice words from my opponent. We go into stalemate for a long time, but eventually he gets a Greater Stone Spirit enchanted with Surging Strength, and I have to make the call to block it with my Viper instead of the now equally scary Allosaurus Rider. I keep chump blocking the 11/11 Rider with cheap stuff, and eventually the Juniper Order Ranger allows me to play and swing with two 4/3 Boreal Griffin for the win. Adarkar Valkyrie still has not showed up. 2-1.
Round 3:
This is the most ridiculous mirror match I have ever seen in limited. He gets his Ranger in play first, meaning his Auroch Herd is a 5/5 to my 4/4, and his Nishoba is a 7/7 to my 6/6... Did I mention we were playing the same deck? 90% of the cards were the same. The difference was that he lacked the Valkyrie and the Viper, but added a pair of Sun's Bounty. He used them to gain in excess of forty life in the first match, while I got out the combo of Adarkar Valkyrie (finally) and Martyr of Sands, meaning I was gaining 9 life a turn. I had been drawing cards earlier with the Viper, however, so his plan became to deck me and then draw out the final match until time was over, meaning he would win the round. I ended up conceding the first game with two cards left in my library and five minutes left in the round.
The second game went a little something like this: turn 1 Boreal Druid, turn 4 Juniper Order Ranger, turn 5 7/7 Nishoba, turn 6 7/6 Snowcrusher. I won that one in under four minutes. Booyah! As a matter of course the last game went over the time limit and was declared a draw. 1-1-1.
Martyr of Sands has begun to win my affection. It has given me 6-12 life and a chump-block nearly every time it has come down, which has been nearly every game, since I have three. "Plains, Martyr, go" has happened so often on the first turn it's scary.
Round 4:
By the third turn he has four colors of mana out, courtesy of a snow-dual. He drops a Gutless Ghoul, a Goblin, and then later an Ardarkar Valkyrie. I have just a few 2/2s and a Boreal Griffin. I can't seem to draw anything else to help for a while, staying alive by virtue of the Martyrs. We build up armies on both sides, but I can't find another flying blocker and his Valkyrie, along with a land-walking Zombie Musher, kill me slowly over several turns. Game one ends with twenty minutes left in the round.
Game two sees a turn four Griffin come down on my side, followed by a turn five Gargoyle and a turn 6 Surging Strength on the Gargoyle. He can't contend with a 5/5 flying, first strike, spirit-link and dies shortly thereafter.
In game three I keep an opening hand of Forest, Plains, Into the North, Martyr, Martyr, and two other white cards. My first two turns consist of Plains, Martyr, Forest, ItN, and I draw two more white cards. On my third turn I draw yet another white card and pass, allowing the Martyr to chump and reveal 6 white cards, gaining me 18 life. The turn after that, I draw an Aurochs Herd and play the other Martyr, chumping again and gaining 15 life. His Valkyrie and Owl tokens manage to get me down to eight (!) before I stabalize by casting a Valkyrie of my own. The match goes into overtime and neither one of us can kill the other, making it a draw. 1-1-1.
Round 5:
I'm paired against my brother, who got a bye in the last round. How perfect is that? We agree to just letting me have the 2-0 and splitting the prize (which we were going to do anyway).
I came in 6th in the flight and won 6 packs, 3 of which I gave to my brother. He got his second Dark Depths out of that, which pleased him to no end, and a second Herald of Leshrac. Between our eight packs each, we had three Herald of Leshrac, three Adarkar Valkyrie, and two Dark Depths, which seemed like an inordinate amount of duplicates.
Afterwards we went and ate at Red Robin. For such a strangely themed restaurant, they have awesome food. I got the Chili Chili Burger, which was the first cheeseburger I've ever had to eat with a fork. It was good enough to convince to go back again if I get the chance.
A quick aside - I never thought I'd see so many Adarkar Valkyrie. I registered one, Mike registered one, I got one, Mike got one, my brother got one, I played against two others, and I opened a second one in my prize packs!
Please, mommy, turn it off. The weird anime guy is bragging to me.

@ Mr. Stuff: Yea, i heard there were a lot of those going around... I just talked to a few people from the old store who went today...he got 3 of them ....2 in the same flight, and 1 in his prizes
@ Spangle's Picture: You think he looks weird...you should see me...
Wow. Spangle Is Freaky. Sorta like me when I was younger. Seriously that pic looks like me when I was 7. Except more eviler. Combine me at with me now and you get spangle. But then how old am I? Does that make me 10 or 20... timestreams are ****ed up.
The Ice Age/Alliances reprints in the CS precons are NOT legal for Standard play. They are only legal in the formats that they are already currently legal in. So in the case of STP- Standard players can't use it to RFG everything, Vintage players already CAN RFG everything, and newer Casual players may yet know the horror that is amazing white removal.
I would like CS, but I'm broke as hell now. Luckily, I only really want a few cards:
Adarkar Valkyrie- Unfortunately, everyone and his brother wants this, so I'll have to kiss it off for a while, most likely. Still... it's a Valkyrie...
Ronom Unicorn- I love Kami of Ancient Law, and making it a unicorn only makes it cooler to me. The flavortext definitely gives it a nice flavor. Reminds me of something out of Narnia.
Martyr of Sands- That would be vile sickness in my pet deck. 32 life on turn 2? Sure, I can deal with that.
Darien- See above.
That's about it, though.
On green: My least favorite color. It just... has so little identity of it's own. And it just shows up freaking EVERYWHERE.

This thing literally won me games by itself. I haven't finished editing my earlier post yet, but in the final game I played, I used it to gain 18 life on the third turn (revealing another one in my hand), and then used the second to gain 15 more on the next turn. By the 5th turn, I had gotten in two chump blocks and gained 33 life! I was mana-screwed, as you could probably guess by my having 6 white cards in hand, but I think that's one of the single most demoralizing plays I've ever pulled off at a prerelease. My opponent's expression was priceless.

Maybe for the 30 seconds that the MoS and Runetail are both in Standard together, Runetail might actually see some play? /speculation

I've been debating whether I should put in Rune Snag in place of my Mana Leaks in my monoblue control deck. It's not as good early game, but unlike the Leak, it performs well late game. Maybe I should test it out first, but I'd like some other opinions. I think I should do it, personally.
Kraj, I love the deck you made! I would so play it. Plus, I can't say I mind having glowing comments made about me.
I still need to choose who I'll design around. I have four candidates -
Kraj, Yukora, Janus, or Yamaneko.
The thing is I don't want any of the four feeling left out if I don't choose them (as there don't seem to be too many people picking anyone now), and the other issue is that the only one for whom I seem to be able to think of a really good deck is Janus.
Anyone really want me to design a deck for you?

All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.

Lightning Serpent
Woolly Razorback
Afterwards we went and ate at Red Robin. For such a strangely themed restaurant, they have awesome food. I got the Chili Chili Burger, which was the first cheeseburger I've ever had to eat with a fork. It was good enough to convince to go back again if I get the chance.

All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.

I'd be honored if ya made a deck for me
