Thank god I don't have to run a live shot tonight. It's so freaking cold here right now. Last I heard the wind chill in Wichita was 7. Wow. That's insanely cold. I'm also glad I have the next two days off since we're supposed to get all kinds of snow tonight and tomorrow before it starts warming up back to around 45 on Friday.

We can now watch DVDs in high definition. I went out yesterday and bought an upscaling DVD player that plays DVDs in near-HD quality (DVDs generally are in 480p resolution, this player upconverts them to 780p or 1080i). I watched Empre Strikes Back last night and it looks a heck of a lot better than the movies we watched with our old player. I was even sitting less than 5 feet away and it still looked spectacular. The only bad thing was I had to buy a $40 HDMI cable to get it to work :slant: Oh well, at least I shopped around and didn't settle for the $70 one they had at Best Buy.

Due to changes in my work situation, health and a vacation I really haven't been able to spend as much time as I used to or would like here at Salvation or on MTGNews.
Yesterday I logged on and saw that the Forum awards were well underway. Imagine my surprise to see my name listed as a nominee for Nicest member. Considering the vast supply of really quality people here at Salvation and in this clan in particular, it is a tremendous honor to be nominated. After finding out from Goblinboy the identities of those who nominated me it is even more special.
You guys are great and I really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot.
Can anyone give me some advice on an MP3 player? I want to get one for my wife's birthday 12/21. Other then the Ipod what brand/model would anyone suggest?

Wow, that's great work. I liked the editting. It kept the interest level of the story high. Around here a story like that would have shown the same piece of video two or three times.
Man, drive-by shootings, sounds like Detroit, no offense. Does Wichita have much of that sort of activity?

Actually, in the early '90s, Wichita had the 2nd-largest per-capita gang activity in the country - only L.A. was ranked higher. We used to have drive-bys all the time. It's died down quite a bit, but lately we've seen a few more of them than usual.
Shooting all these shootings and stabbings and such, though, really gives me a good idea what parts of town to avoid when we start looking for a house.

I guess I'll be driving up to Kansas City tomorrow for my brother-in-law's (Will's dad) graduation. My wife was planning on going by herself but then I remembered that there's supposed to be this huge liquor store that's like a block long that supposedly guarantees that they have any beer you want in stock or else they'll special order it for you. I'm drooling with anticipation at the prospect of examining their selection...

My oldest son just got his acceptence letters back from all four of his top college choices this week. He applied to the University of Michigan, Lawrence Tech, Oakland University and Kettering University. He could commute to any of these but may deside that he wants to live on campus. He's going for Computer Engineering which is why he applied to the schools he did. I had no idea that it was standard procedure to send new, potential enrollees a school tee shirt. We got the Uof M shirt first then one from each of the other schools the next three days. Fairly nice shirts too.
Everyone all set for the Holiday?
My wife's birthday is Dec. 21st so I'm trying to get some surprises set up for her. We're celebrating tomorrow by going out to dinner then a movie, Aeon Flux. It's a rip having a birthday so close to Christmas. I always try to make her birthday special too. I have to work Monday but have the rest of the week off next week. I did not tell my wife so on her birthday I'll show up at her office with flowers and take her to lunch. I picked up a Sony MP3 player for her. Since she is on her feet most of the day I'm sure she'll like being able to descretely listen to her music too. I'ts sweet. I'll have to get myself one someday.
Here's a couple of pictures of the Christmas Pug from a couple of years ago. I think Spanky loves this time of year as much as I do. Well maybe not the dressing up part, but she loves Christmas!

The snow is a bastard. A big, fluffy white bastard.
I'll probably end up covering the snow storm again today like I did yesterday. I had to stand out in the snow for several hours yesterday shooting side street conditions, highway conditions, several interviews, several accidents, airport conditions, and a live shot out in the snow. My pants are still wet. With all this coverage, you'd think Kansas didn't get 2-3 large snow storms every single winter :slant:

Looks like today is going to be pretty easy. I'm assigned to the reporter who shoots and edits all his own stuff and he's also not live tonight so I don't have to worry about setting up a live shot. I've shot a lot of snow-related video (shopping, sledding, chuch closings, school closings) but nothing too difficult. I'm looking forward to getting home a bit earlier than usual and watching a movie and sampling one of the new beers I got the other day, possibly Monty Python's Holy (Gr)Ale.
Also, looks like Hawk's going to secure a place in the fantasy football finals after a few sub-par performances by a couple of my guys and some great performances by a couple of his.

Other than work today's been pretty fun. My mom, dad, and grandma came over today to do some shopping and I helped my mom pick out a digital camera. After that my dad and I went to eat at the Fox and Hound Pub where K-State's new football coach was going to be speaking and answering questions. He seems like he's got a pretty good plan and might be hiring some NFL coordinators as assistant coaches. My dad even got on TV (the back of his head anyway) since the sports director from KAKE saw me there and stood on my chair to get a better view.

I guess we're going in with my sister-in-law and father-in-law to buy my mother-in-law a huge KitchenAid mixer - the huge, industrial size one that retails for like $450. Apparently they found one on sale so our share of it is only around $100. That's nothing, though, compared to what the sister-in-law got her husband: a 2002 Mustang

Well, I finally made it to a Christmas party last night - the weekend people who have to work during the actual company Christmas party always have their own party at some point. We stayed up till around 2:30 last night drinking, watching the blooper tape from the past year (chronicling all the times anchors and reporters, etc. messed up on the air), and talking crap on the news director. It was pretty fun

We all draw names at Thanksgiving and buy a present for the person who's name you draw. That way you don't have top buy 50 cheap little presents for 50 different relatives. We set a dollar limit but no one really pays attention to that. We also buy a present for each of the children in everyone's family and of course I get presents for my wife, son's and mother. Buy drawing names it narrows down the number of people I used to buy for from about 30 to more like 12.
I got my wife a digital camera which I'm pretty sure she will like. She had a 35mm camera but got sand in it and it quit working this pasted summer. This should be a surprise to, which makes it even more fun.
I posted this over on the News FFFB thread.
Quote from HAWKEYE7 »
I've been on vacation for the last three days. Getting the house ready for Christmas, buying gifts, cooking, the works. At exactly 8:04pm Eastern Standard Time tonight, Christmas Eve I realized I forgot to get my mother a present. I was Christmas shopping all day today and I forgot to get my mother a present. This was like a bad tv sitcom episode. I hopped in the car and drove to Meijer's since they are always open, 24 hours a day, that is except today. they colsed a 7:00pm.
Argh! I went over to the mall and it had just colsed at 8:00pm, I missed it by 20 minutes. I then went over to the 24 hour CVS pharmacy and they were open. Woo Hoo! Now, what to get Mom? A Chia Pet? they had Chia Homer Simpson, no she was not much for the Simpsons. A foot or neck messager? Seems like I had given her a couple of those over the years, mostly well I was a starving college student. Ah ha!, Low and behold there was the perfect gift and the best option there was in the CVS store, a Clapper! That's right! clap on, clap clap, clap off, clap clap, clap on clap off, THE CLAPPER. This was going to be the worst. As I was paying for the Clapper I told my sorry tale to the cashier and she told me not to worry, K-Mart was open till 10:00pm! Was that the sound of angels I heard?
So, I was off to K-Mart and again, low and behold they had one last I-Pod car stereo adaptor and speaker stand set left! It was Kismet. My mother got an I-pod for her birthday and loved it. These would let her enjoy it even more. I got her the clapper too.
Well, I made a memory anyway.
Merry Christmas guys!

Heh. Glad everything turned out all right, Hawk. I didn't really get my wife much for Christmas - after spending $3,000 on our TV, we decided it wasn't a good idea to be spending a bunch of money on each other, so I just bought myself some beer and her a bottle of her favorite Riesling. Most of the other family members will be getting framed 8x10 wedding photos that we just printed out at CopyMax the other day. Maybe next year we can afford to buy some decent gifts for people.

It was an incredibly slow day at work yesterday and I was done editing my 5:30 and 10 o'clock stories by noon. After that I just sat around till the afternoon photographer got in at 2 and then went over to my wife's aunt's and uncle's to eat lunch and then drove back home to eat with my family after that. We then opened our presents which, considering it was just the two of us, took quite a while - my side of the family tends to go nuts with presents.
Overall a pretty good haul: several new CDs, a DVD, about 8 new beers, lots of cash and gift cards, over half a dozen new books, and way too much candy. Too bad I have to drive back to go to work at 2 this afternoon :slant:
