Well, today was an unexpectedly long day. Today and Wednesday are usually my days off but since I'm on call this week, I got called in today to shoot the press conference where Bill Snyder, football coach at Kansas State was announcing his retirement.
For those who don't know, Snyder orchestrated the single greatest turnaround in college football history and one of the greatest sports turnarounds of all time in taking "the worst team in the history of college football" (as Sports Illustrated labeled K-State in the mid '80s) and taking them all the way to #1 in the polls (and nearly a spot in the national championship game) as well as a string of 11-win seasons and 11 straight postseason bowl appearances (prior to his arrival, KSU had been to one bowl in their 110-year history).
They've had some down years lately and that probably has a lot to do with this announcement. As a lifetime K-State fan it was a sad honor to be able to be there covering this event. That and the fact that I'm going to be getting around $250 worth of overtime made the 12 hours I had to work today bearable.

I heard about this on the news up here. That is an amazing career Coach Snyder had. We don't usually get indepth stories about teams and coachs of non-Big Ten conferences here, but the piece was about7-8 minutes and went into pretty good detail. I think the Sportscaster was originally from your area. I wondered if you would be covering the announcement.

It really was a fairly emotional day. I remember back in grade school I'd get made fun of a lot for being a K-State fan whilst they were in the midst of two straight 0-win seasons. Once Snyder took over, though, he made it easy to be a proud Wildcat fan as within only a couple of years he had us ranked in the polls and going to bowl games. It really was a great time to be a Cat fan.
I just hope that whoever they bring in has as good a character as Snyder - Snyder was always a person who put character first and really emphasized being a good person both on and off the field. It would be nice if his successor can uphold that tradition in the stadium that now bears his name.

Right now a lot of people are speculating (and hoping) that it'll bew a guy named Brent Venables who played under Snyder and then came back to K-State as one of his assistants for several years before leaving with Mike Stoops and Mark Mangino (two other Wildcat assistant coaches at the time who are now head coaches) to join Mike's brother Bob at Oklahoma. Bob was also a previous Snyder assistant. I think in all there are at least 5 or 6 former Snyder assistants who are now head coaches at D-1 schools. Pretty nice legacy and reminiscent of Snyder's former mentor, Hayden Fry (another great coach known for having many of his former assistants take head coaching jobs).

I heard about that back when it happened. Ew...
Also, I think I've narrowed it down now to the exact TV I'm going to get. It's a 56" Toshiba DLP HDTV from Sears on sale for around $2,800. That's not only much closer to my original budget, but it's also 6" bigger than the one I originally was thinking about. Also, it should be just big enough to fit in between the book shelves we already have in our living room (with about 2" to spare). Here's a picture:
I was bored last night so I decided to mock up a little sketch showing the exact proportions of the TV, just to get an idea of just how huge it's going to be:
Yeah...it's going to be big. And there shouldn't be too much trouble getting it up to our 3rd floor apartment as long as we take it out of the box first.

I'm on vacation next week. Driving to South Carolina on Sunday to visit my sister then on weds driving to Georgia to spend the next three days with my brother in laws family. He's the one who almost died this summer from his gall bladder basically exploding. It will be really great to see them and spend thanksgiving with them.
Unfortunately, I have a savage sinus infection. I've had it for two weeks now and finally broke down and went to the doctors. She shot me full of antibiotics with what I think was a turkey baster. That shot hurt like the blazes, even a day later. Oh well at least I should be feeling better for the 14 hour drive.

Wow, today's been one of those days. I was cruising along not really doing a whole lot until around 3:45 all of a sudden I'm shooting the live shot for the lead story at 5. Oooooook. They wanted me to drive the live truck to do an interview on the west side of town then drive over to a bank that was robbed and then drive over to the east side to do the live shot. Riiiight. Luckily we had some other photogs who could shoot the bank while we set up the shot and we still barely made it on the air in time. Whew.
Oh yeah, I'll also probably be getting the TV tomorrow morning now as I found out that the current sale ($320 off) ends tomorrow. I'm going to have to hope I don't get called in early for work so that I can take advantage of that.

Wow, yesterday/today was "one of those days" too. I had to come in early at 9 am yesterday to go tape the news angle of Snyder's last game in Manhattan. It was pretty cool since I'm such a fan but it was still a pain in the ass staying up there until 10 (6 hours after the game ended) just to do the 10 o'clock live shot. Oh well. The 'Cats won in exciting fashion, coming back from two touchdowns down in the third to take the lead by 1 after a safety before securing the win with a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown.
I got to go up to the stands at one point and sit and watch the game with my dad, luckily right when K-State blocked a punt and returned it for a TD in the 1st quarter. I got a great shot of him and the people he was sitting with celebrating that we used on the air. After the game there was a tribute to Snyder and he got up on a podium and thanked everyone before the team carried him off on their shoulders. A sad day but a moving one.

This has been the week from hell. After working 18 hours yesterday from 9 am to 1 am and then from 1:15 am to 3:15 am, I got to work from 9:30 am until 12:30 am today. Ugh. I was actually on my way home from work on two seperate occasions only to get called back in to work before I could make it all the way home. There was a shooting at a grocery store and then an elevator accident way down by the Oklahoma border. Did I already say "ugh"?

You know what really sucks? Less than five minutes after I clicked "Submmit" on that post, I got called back in. I was freaking pissed. There was some house fire I had to go shoot which luckily only took about an hour. I didn't even set my alarm this morning but unfortunately I was awakened about 10:30 by the news desk person asking if I could come in at noon today. I told him no way - the first time I've ever refused to work early or stay in late, and I think I was more than justified after working around 36 or so hours in two days.

Yeah, it's going to be a ton. My next paycheck will have an extra 43.5 hours worth of time-and-a-half on it. I don't know, though, whether or not that's really worth working for 74.5 hours in one week, though. It'll definitely help pay off the rest of the TV, I guess (which I can't wait to pick up the second it's back in stock).

I, on the other hand, was a huge fan of the Xbox. I'm really looking forward to getting a 360 (whenever the heck that is) despite some of the supply and technical issues they've had. I actually really like the launch lineup as Perfect Dark looks pretty good to me and I'm also a big fan of the Project Gotham and Dead or Alive series.
I'll probably get a Revolution, too, at some point because Nintendo still puts out the best 1st-party games of anyone. No PS3 for me, though, because I can't stand Sony.

I'm hoping today will be a fairly easy day at work. That's always a tenuous thing at best, but I'm pretty sure we only have one early show today (as opposed to shows at both 5 and 6) since there's a football game on that will get over no earlier than 5:30 (and possibly 6:30 if there's a lot of passing and it goes into overtime). We shall see...

Hypnotize is incredible. It's easily the best CD I've bought this year and one of the best I've ever heard. I got the DualDisc with the BYOB and Question! videos as well as a sort of mish-mash "making of" video. Great stuff.

Well, work should be interesting the next few days. Apparently someone is planning on filing another formal complaint against our news director (who has already had 2 or 3 made against him) which would take the situation out of the general manager's hands and put it up to corporate to decide whether or not he gets to keep his job. Just about everyone at our station would be glad to see him go, despite what he's done for us in terms of viewership (going from a distant 3rd to a strong 2nd), mainly because of how much of an ******* he can be when you do something that he doesn't like (such as calling people ****ing worthless, etc.). He's never been too hard on me personally, but I've been with reporters who have been in tears after a phone call from him, so I'm not really sure what to think about this whole thing.
