Why the conflict? I assume it's for a good cause (lingerie fashion shows are usually to raise money for charity). The charities get money for good causes, the women involved get to display the attributes they are clearly proud of, and the men in the audience enjoy themselves greatly.
Apparently, the "point" of it is just to raise money for the club that's putting it on.
In any event, I think I am not being unreasonable in demanding that activities funded by the University have some academic merit to them. This does not.
As long as you don't find yourself enjoying it a little too much, I think you're in the clear.
I'm certainly not going. I will leave that up to the gentlemen who enjoy lying to themselves about their own intentions.

Meh. Universities do many things that are not strictly related. Civic engagement, community services, etc. And student groups should have even more latitude.

What kind of club is it? A fashion club?
In any event, I think I am not being unreasonable in demanding that activities funded by the University have some academic merit to them. This does not.
So now you're saying that the university is funding a non-academic fund-raiser?
Yes, the fashion club. It's also connected to various of the fashion courses offered at the school, and participation in it, whether it be planning, design, or modelling, can be for class credit.
So now you're saying that the university is funding a non-academic fund-raiser?
The University provides general funds to every club it sanctions, but clubs are also able to do their own fund-raising to augment this. This is how we have an official drinking club operating under the banner of "social planners."
The money for this show has come, largely, from the school. They have paid for the venue, I believe, as well as providing use of seamstress facilities for clothing design. Our school has deep pockets.

The "line" isn't so easily drawn or defined, is it?
Yes, it's like living inside of one of Stan's diagrams. In a very real sense.
I can only appeal to the common sense within you that, upon hearing the question "what do you consider high art?", prevents your mind from leaping to "underwear models."
I can only appeal to the common sense within you that, upon hearing the question "what do you consider high art?", prevents your mind from leaping to "underwear models."
It doesn't, but that doesn't mean underwear modeling isn't.
I will confess that I am no art critic, and thus have little say in the matter other than my opinion. I think that underwear modeling isn't not art. Fair enough?

Also, if it matters, you can put down the first half of my real name next to my adored and abhored moniker. Nathan.

Quite so. All it means is that our monolithic Common Sense has some reason for precluding it summariliy.

Certainly. Much of "art" is apparently ineffable.

Sure.

But if we let ourselves be dominated by a pamphlet printed and distributed with the purpose of angering the colonists to British Parliamentary and Monarchy rule, we should we live at all?

Yeah, the Declaration of Independence should be ignored.
Indeed. Art is such a vague definition of art.
Yes. Let us ignore it forever!

The Declaration is possibly the most oft incorrectly cited document ever in terms of American History.
It wouldn't surprise me.
In other news, my ancestors fought and killed American revolutionaries. And Frenchmen. And Russians. And other Scots. And Germans. And so on.
I'm most proud of the first two.
A double call to ignore. I must wonder what ignorance got to you?
Well, it's not really my fault. I tried to take a run around my mental block, sprained my ankle and decided to stay home and watch Gettysburg instead. As a result, I am now ignorant of thousands of things about which I used to know a great deal. Such is the price of cinema.

Cinema will lift you up like a child, light and innocent,
and then it will spit you out like a stone, cold and igorant.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.

If underwear modeling isn't art, it should be. Watching young women strut around in.....*drools*.....what was I talking about? Blast the mind of a teenager.
There is this rather disturbing trend in my high school for people to believe that the Declaration of Independence is like part of the constitution. And I don't think this is isolated to just teens either =/. In related news, I still don't understand strict constructionalism.

There's been a disturbing trend in my high school not to care about the Declaration or any other piece of writing at all . Anyway,
Yeah, the Declaration of Independence should be ignored.
I think it was a very well written document that shows how the King was being an ass while laying out the groundwork for all that was to come. It is one of the founding documents of America; why ignore it?
Imagine how Thomas Jefferson would have led us if he had stuck to his constitutional guns (and lived forever) on issues such as slavery or abortion, or how he would have felt about this new neo-conservative approach to threats - preemptive action.
*shrug*
It's just an observation. Do not take it into a US History class.

So now you're saying that the university is funding a non-academic fund-raiser?

Yeah, that part confused me too. I suppose the club's main purpose is funded and they're trying to increase their budget through their own hard work?
Also I read The Constitution of the Athenians and it reminded me of msun.

Thomas Jefferson was probably the most enlightened founding father, barring his strict constitutional interpretations.
In many ways, though, that makes him far more libertarian than most. In other's, it makes him a horrid fascist.
How so?
