@Goblinboy- That sounds fun, except for the Spanish theatre part...wierd stuff.
@Prizm- I think he will be found not guilty, for the same reasons you mentioned. He may be a wacko, sleeping in the same bed as yound kids, but I didn't find any compelling evidence that he was guilty. But I suppose we shall see.
In other news, we have finals next week. In our school, if you have an A average for the year in a full year course, you don't have to take the final exam, so I'm getting out of about half of mine I do have to take English, Creative Writing, Gym(an actual written exam, how sick is that?), because they are my half-year courses. Then Summer, filled with a lot of work, and in my 3 weeks off, a lot of play!! I also may take GenCon weekend off in August, and drive down there, which would be cool, but I have to see how money is then.
How about you all? What are your plans for the summer?
How about you all? What are your plans for the summer?
Work. Other than that? Hope to do some writing. Hang out with my friends, as usual. I'm going to see Judas Priest this summer. I'm also going to see Gigantour 2005 with Megadeth, Fear Factory, Dream Theater, Symphony X and more!

Oh, and I'm also working at a tennis camp in the mornings. On one hand, it's terrible because 10 year old kids seem to think it's funny if they hit you in the nuts as hard as they can with a tennis ball (so they aim), but on the other hand it lets you develop reflexes.
@Matt- I just saw Skid Row last weekend(free concert in Manchester, "Rock 101 Sky Show") and they were awesome. I would love to see Fear Factory and Megadeath.
Speaking of music, has anyone ever heard of Mindless Self-Indulgence? They're kind of techno-death metal. Weird, but good. They're a local band from NYC(if that's local for any of you )
On a completely unrelated note, does anyone know if any of the mainstream media has reported on the "Parents can't teach Wicca" case? I read the New York Times(ugh) and I haven't seen anything, which is wierd, because that's just their type of story. Strange.
Just checking in to say I absolutely hate canoeing and hate it even more when they tip over.
On Summer Plans: really not much. I'm going to be gone through most of June and July for vacations and whatnot, but other than that it's mostly enjoying my time when I don't have to do as much.

Canoeing sucks, agreed. I went once---just once, never again---and flipped it in ice cold water, banged my head on some rocks. Blood. Almost fun.[/sarcasm]

Yeah, a lot of my friends are really big fans and MSI was actually in concert here a couple weeks ago. I am personally not very familiar with them, but I've never heard of them described as death metal. I always thought they were more industrial-punk, so I avoided them because I don't like the new industrial (I like old industrial - Skinny Puppy is my favorite band incidentally), and I really don't like any kind of punk.
Are you kidding? Canoeing is the greatest of boating activities :). Even if you get tipped you can always push the boat away from the perpetrator for vengeance.
Your music discussion is reminding me that I haven't bought a CD in like a year and a half.

Yeah, that's so much fun. Whats better is when you have a whole bunch of canoes and you start splashing the people on the other ones with your oars and trying to board their canoe and/or tip it... like a pirate or something. Eh, I'm weird.. but I find such things fun.

I have a question to pose.
I've heard numerous people make the claim that artists* are more likely to live troubled^ lives due to their "artistic personality". But there is limited evidence and its not like we can really poll everyone on this. From what you do know would you tend to agree or disagree with the claim?

I'd say that most artists exhibit at least one of those symptoms... I'd also say that most people exhibit at least one of those symptoms. Seriously, name for me one honestly 'normal' person. I know I'm not, and I haven't met any.

In many cases, I think, that's a self-fulfilling prophecy nonspecific demographical statistic. Surely you've seen the "Woe is me I'm an artist now watch me cut myself" types, yes?
In terms of earnest mental troubles, I think it's likely accurate to a small degree, but the causes are reversed. Someone with inner demons would likely find artistic outlets to be a viable way to cope.
So, the citizens of Washington finally know who their Governor is going to be for the next three-and-a-half years. The Republican challenger, Rossi, just conceded a few minutes ago, marking an end to one of the closest Gubernatorial elections in history.

I will answer purely on conjecture. I think that artists have a higher likelihood of living "troubled" lives than regular people because of the nature of most art. Usually its an expression of a deep, personal desire that is displayed for an audience at large. When their work is rejected, it is almost as if the audience, society, whatever, is rejecting their identies. I think most non-artists put up facades for the public. At least if it is rejected, you can justify that it was only hte facade they rejected, not you.

ljoss: Artists are artists because they are extremely passionate about---and you'll forgive the repetition---their art. Extreme passion about a thing like art leads most often to a solitary lifestyle, which most people are uncomfortable with, which then leads to things like drug abuse and alcoholism.
In addition to that, because of their inherent introverted nature(in most cases), they are outcasted from society, again leading to drug abuse and alcoholism.
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. Many artists are well adjusted people with good lives...Ayn Rand was an example of this(though it is said that she was brash and rude at times ).
@Sen: So the Republican lost? That's disappointing... Do you think it's fair to say that it is the closest election in history? Because that would be interesting.

Hmm... didn't she start a mini-cult where only those who agreed with her on absolutely everything were regarded as intelligent enough to understand her true philosophy?
She didn't actually start the cult--and it's arguable whether or not it was a cult at all---but she was rather dogmatic; she felt a Nietzschean contempt for anyone who didn't understand where she was coming from, and therefore hated to debate her philosophy.
And also have an affair with a follower, expect her and his partners to understand because it was a "match of great thinkers", and then kick him and his partner out of her group after he started sleeping with someone else?
If you are referring to Nathaniel Branden(and his wife Barbara), then you are correct. They had a thing going for like 14 years, and it fell apart when he left her for another woman; she forgave Barbara(who knew about the affair) but never Nathaniel1. But other than that...
But as a general rule, artists are more reclusive than the average man, and thus often have more problems with drugs and whatnot.
1: For further information, or if you are interested in her life, see Barbara Branden's biography, The Passion of Ayn Rand. It's a great book, even if you don't enjoy her novels---she led an interesting life.
Now I have a few days before I run off to Colorado and Nebraska. ^^

Ugh, I still have another week of school. But no running for me, until July, when I have
THREE WEEKS OFF.
I know I've said this before, but I love to reiterate this.
I'll be in New York for about a week. I'm visiting the city, staying with a friend, and then it's up to Rochester and Ithica, where I'll be staying with my cousin Rachel at Cornell. Beyond that, I'm not sure what I'll be doing. Probably lulling around like a lazy bum.
Oh. There was a story on the news....in Maine, before the prom, a limo driver picked up some kids; he looked in the rearview mirror, only to discover that they were drinking. When he drove them home, per limo policy and state law, the parnets objected, and told the driver that he was ruining their prom.
Ugh.
Oh, and I have an interesting story. I gave a poor guy $200 today.
No, really. I did.
I was walking down mainstreet, and across the road, standing on a traffic island, was a man with a cardboard sign, reading, "Will Work for Food." Curious, and with an hour or so to spare before work, I crossed the street and introduced myself. He gave me a dirtyish look; I'm only 17, and clearly not an employer with food. But he obviously didn't have any immediate business prospects, so he joined me, at my request, in a nearby cafe, my treat. You see, I'm a very curious person, and like to learn about people and things.
Inside, we sat and ordered. Once I told him that I was paying, and that no, he didn't have to worry about the money, he ordered gluttonously--- a large chicken sandwhich(toasted bread), a large coffee(cream, no sugar) and a giant mufffin(lousy with blueberries)---and asked what I wanted to talk about.
I explained that I was simply curious about what led him to where he was. He didn't have the appearance or odor of a habitually impoverished man, and had the demeanor of one used to far more respectability than standing in public begging for food. His story confirmed that. He used to be a foreman in a construction firm. In 2003, he lost his job due to severe budget cuts---the company later went out of business entirely---and since then he'd worked odd jobs on and off. This week is an off week.
So I asked him, eventually, what he thought was the cause of his unemployement. His answer has swift and angry: that bastard W.
(And here comes the obligatory Randian-bent message of the story which you have all come to expect.)
It was clear, after only a few minutes, that he accepted none of the blame for his position. The blame lies solely with Bush, as far as he's concerned. I asked him what he has been doing to find a new job, and he gave me this look, as if to ask:what are you, stupid? He said that he stood in public places, holding his sign, of course. I asked if he had applied as a worker at any construction sites---I knew from experience that they are almost always hiring--and he frowned and repeated that he had been a foreman goddamit, and there was no way in hell that he was going to be just a grunt for the rest of his life. I reminded him that grunts got paid in money, not in food, and he didn't speak for a few minutes.
Well, after a while, I looked at my watch and discovered that I had to go to work. Before leaving, I apologized for taking up so much of his time. I figured I owed him something for all that time I'd taken, so I pulled out a couple $100 bills form my wallet, and told him to keep it, against his harsh refusals.
So there you have it. Me givng to the poor, and a Randian moral, all in one story? What more could you ask for?
Heh, I've had some similar experiences, T2 (though I can't say I've given out hundreds - props on that).
So I'm not really a big fan of hardcore, but some of my friends took me to a Himsa show yesterday, and I was very surprised to like it. The hardcore kids did not even get on my nerves. I did get kicked in the head about 5 times and punched a lot more because I was standing right at the stage and people were stagediving, but it was worth it.
Well, the only "bad" things that happened were that my watch broke because it got caught on someone's hand as they were falling from a stagedive, and one guy who must have weighed at least 200 lbs. stagedived right onto me. As in, there was nobody around me so he was about to land on my head and I had to support him entirely with my hands. Still a good show though. It got a lot better when the metalheads came in for Himsa
I have a weird problem. One of my more religious friends has invited me to his church next Sunday. I told him that I have never been very "faithful" or that I would be a good person to bring along on such an outing. He didn't seem to mid. I'm thinking of accepting, as it wouldn't be a bad idea to at least be open to other ideas but there is a problem. Many of the people in my community suspect it or liken it to be a cult, complete with "secret" rituals (whatever that means). I have several friends and many acquaintices who attend that church and I am afraid of what I might do once in there. But then again, it could help illuminate or eliminate many of the rumors I have heard of it myself. Any suggestions?
