I've never thought of them as close. I suppose some aspects are---logic and epistemology, for example. Still, math has always irked me in a big way. It's not that I can't do it, I can. It's just that it's boring as hell(says the man who spends his time reading philosophy ).
Oh, and great news! I did something today I've wanted to do for months: I quite my job with the construction firm!!!!!!! Now I only have 2 jobs, and A LOT more time on my hands. That means more sleep and more posting, both of which I need.
Well, it is nice to see someone attempting to take up my mantle... the sad thing being is this: I'm not posting as Jasaicrai. I'm Loonook; its my opt-name when I have a chance... and the writings belonging to Jasaicrai are nothing like my style. Whatever; I find it cute that someone with too little skill in writing decided to attempt mimicry... too bad that it failed so savagely.
Anyways, just again, Jasaicrai doesn't = Loonook.

Debating on Salvation because News just doesn't have the oomph for me . . .
Check me out on News if you feel I'm a 'newbie' when it comes to debate
Depends on what 'staying' means.. I do have a lot of horrendously difficult work to do in the coming weeks before getting some work in in the District...
Just depends. I saw Jasaicrai's posts and got just a little bit bewildered; firstly, I actually considered a BA/MA program in Religious Studies (not theology, but let's think of why I wouldn't know what omnipotence is...)
Second, his replies are horribly written. Is there a place/way I can get this two-bit hack booted?

Yeah, I got a bit suspicious when I saw your post at News today which was a day old in which you said you were "tempted" to make an account at Salvation ;). I'd have said something, but the proxy I use at school doesn't allow posting. Sadly, you have to impersonate a mod to get banned, but that doesn't mean he gets to stay in the clan. Thoughts?
But Math and Philosophy are so closely entwined, in my opinion. Math is just cleaner, and with more applications to the physical world rather than the mental world.
Yes, I agree. Math <=> philosophy, at least in terms of the way you approach problems from each.

Have you done any abstract proof-based math (set theory, modern algebra, analysis, etc) or has it been calculus? Because if most your math has either been calculus or whatever else they do in high school, rest assured that that stuff is not real math, and I agree that it is boring as hell (and I'm a math major). The real math comes very close to philosophy.

No, logical structure is close to math... you can take an argument in philosophy and quantify it with mathematical formulae, but that doesn't make them 'intertwined', nor does that make them of any essence approaching equal. . . Any theoretical works can be interlinked, but that doesn't make them 'the same'.
Yeah, math is interesting... but it isn't philosophy. Higher level math is just an approach to quantification, not the qualitative approach you find in philosophy. But hey, I just had to live with majors of that ilk in college :).

Yes and no on that one; much higher math is devoted to qualitative studies, namely what qualities of a certain mathematical structure allow it to interact with other structures, and how. I had a prof last year who basically said that all math is equivalence relations, for instance. Now, these structures may or may not be "quantifiable", in a sense, but the point is that a lot of math investigates the qualities of these structures.
Of course, if we're talking about PDEs or numerical analysis, then yes, that is just very advanced quantification (but even in these cases sometimes it isn't).
I want you to know with upmost sincerity and upon my mother's grave that I am not jasaicrai. I would hope that even if you disagree with what I post and even if you think I am a complete moron, that I would not impersonate you. I have never made an alternate account, and I would not mock someone whom I consider to be a quality poster and an intelligent poster.

I am currently studying calculus(and statistics), but I have taken Algebra and geometry.
You have the same IP Address (addresses) as this jasaicrai character, T2. I can independantly confirm that fact.

Sing lustily and with good courage.
Be aware of singing as if you were half dead,
or half asleep:
but lift your voice with strength.
Be no more afraid of your voice now,
nor more ashamed of its being heard,
than when you sang the songs of Satan.
I understand that, Senori. A very important point, however: I post, primarily, in my school's library, ie, in a public place. Now, if the IP is the same as this computer on which I am now typing....then I expect to feel the chill of Hell being frozen over.

I do use Earthlink at home, but what does that have to do with it?
The only thing I can think of is that at school, there are a bunch of people who post here. I know only one personally(my friend Amber is DarkMisticFire), but I've seen it bookmarked at a few of the library's computers.
First I drop the ball and forget I'm in a clan, then someone impersonates Loonook's secondary account name, and now it could be T2?
ugh.
AP U.S. history exams coming up for me which, when passed, waive me from taking the course in college. Score.
Secondly, if Loonook does want into the clan (which I don't even know if it's Loon or jasaicrai or a gimmick account), then it's fine by me. He gets my literary references, I understand his metaphors.
Well, luckily we already accepted jasaicrai into the clan on the basis that he is Loonook, so by syllogism, we have already accepted Loonook...yeah, that made sense.
*shrug* Your IP varies greatly, but you often share the same one as Angelique, jasaicrai, and psych0588. I doubt those two are connected to you.

But if jasaicrai is a different person than Loonook (which is what's being claimed), then Loonook is not in, and instead someone else is.
I am currently studying calculus(and statistics), but I have taken Algebra and geometry.
Take an intro to math reasoning (or whatever it will be called at your school) class when you are in college. At the very least it will satisfy gen ed credits, but I'm also confident that you will find it interesting. It's not like calculus at all, rest assured of that.
Good. I can't stand calclulus. It is, in fact, my least favorite class. I even enjoy Physics more, and I have never said that about physics. Is mathematical reasoning comparable to Formal Logic(the logical quantifiers are used in math study, afterall)?
But you don't doubt that jasaicrai is connected to me. I see. Thank you for the benefit of the doubt.
I do doubt it. I'm taking what people have said at face value: Loonook says it isn't him, you say it isn't you, and you offer a viable alternative: Individuals at your school could be doing it. Fair enough.
It's not important unless it is you, but I don't think it is, so there.
Thank you, Denver. I find the concept of faith to be deplorable, but in some instances, it is fitting. The phrase 'innocent until proven guilty' comes to mind, does it not?

I'm niether a prosecutor nor a consitutionalist, but I know the sentiment, yes.

Yes. I actually saw existential and universal quantifiers in such a math class before I had taken any logic. It is supposed to be the first "real" math class, in that it is almost entirely proof based, so formal logic is heavily applied. If that sounds too dry, then keep in mind that there many interesting results from this level of math, such as Cantor's theorems (which can show that there are different "sizes" of infinity).
