I haven't been paying much attention to the religion threads, but I can safely say that the flagrant idiocy of Cyan and others would upset any self-respecting Catholic.
It's kind of like when I'm trying to explain something about the Old Testament to someone, and they always say, 'BUT LOOK IT CONDONES SLAVERY, AND IT SAYS WE SHOULD STONE HOMOSEXUALS THEREFORE IT IS WRONG LOLOLOL.' There is a limit to the number of times one can repeat the same thing before flaming begins. It must be some kind of internet law.

Threads like the religion threads are the reason I keep most of my debates offline. Arguing alongside or against illogical people makes the entire experience unsavory. I can see why Paz is getting ticked off.

Completely off the topic, which political pundit do you think is most likely to be making up his/her political affiliation for "shock ratings"?
Hmm...I never thought of it before. Whom did you have in mind?
You know... people that are just so far out there that it's just outside the realm of believeability. Like Ann Coulter or Michael Savage.
Then again, maybe that question is a psychological self-defense mechanism. I really don't want to believe that people that crazy are out there :slant:.

I just found out that I received my first warning on the site.
I suppose I should have expected it, but it just really ticks me off when people write "rogue" as "rouge."
GB: It's not so much crazy as it is ruthlessly mercenary.

I saw that in the Mod Lounge, but I never clicked the link. I wondered what it was for. Yeah, it gets to me, too :slant:

That's the question, though. How much of that do they actually agree with and how much are they just making up for the ratings?
Speaking of warnings, while I have yet to receive one on Salvation, I would get one if I pointed out my pet peave to Cyan. He always uses "whom", even when he should be using "who." He tries to sound smart, but ends up just making himself look like an idiot... but if I said that to his face(or to his avatar, I suppose), I would probably get warned. /me shrugs.

He seems really... hostile lately. I don't know what we did to get him so upset.
Well don't you know? We suggested taht perhaps Christianity is flawed! How could we do such a thing?!?
I'm not sure what to read next...I was thinking getting into some female authors, such as Tonni Morrison. I've read Beloved, and I enjoyed it, so I may read Paradise.
T2: it was in the World of Warcraft thread, and Alex said if he played, he would be a rouge. So I posted the dictionary.com definition of rouge, and stax spam warninged me :(.

I haven't heard of him...is he a......................liberal?
Speaking of which, Bill Clinton is coming to the Barnes and Noble in Manchester(about 3 miles from my home) on Thursday at 10am--he'll be signing books, which is no thrill, but then he's giving a talk for a few hours. I'm going, but I'm not spending money on his book, dammit. I've gotten the morning off, I'm very, very excited.
Wikipedia's article on Chomsky is larger than articles are supposed to be on Wikipedia; that'd be a good place to start. :winky:

If this is the Zenith of intellectualism on this site, then the world has much to fear indeed. But forgive my sarcasm, it's been a long day. That said, I am intrigued just enough to request membership in this institution. Mother may I?

Loonook: sure, just keep your distance from T2Sux
On that note, T2Sux is apparently going to start a formal debate thread. Just wanted to note the difficulty involved, especially involving time zones. Maybe debate "teams".
On a tangent: Next week, on friday, I leave to spend a few days in San Fransisco before I must return, take AP tests, and then the SAT. My scheduling prowess could use some improvement.

I'm reading through some of the Federalist papers right now. It's eerie how little we've changed since that time :slant: Not in terms of politics; those sure have changed, but the things they warn about happening because of the setup of the government... *drumroll* are still going on. A LOT. An example is Federalist Paper #51. Well, maybe not the best of the examples, but it springs to mind easily. I hate it when pessimists are right
@TBW- Hm...Time Zones...I hadn't thought of that. Perhaps instead of setting a time limit, we set a post limit? Like we say 14 posts for each side, unless both request an extention?(note: 14 is an arbitrary number, the real one would be more thought out.)
@GB- I always did like Madison, pessimist or not. I haven't looked through the Federalist papers in years, I should do that sometime.
Per Bill Clinton- Okay, so I've caved--this morning I went out and bought a copy of My Life, to have it signed. I probably won't even read it, but it's just something to have, and it's kind of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so whatever..
My new supervisor is a dumass- I could do her job better than she can. We left an hour late because the idiot couldn't manage to count a safe at the end of the shift. She counted it 5 times, got 5 different numbers(none of them correct). She asked me to count it, and I got it right the first time. She didn't believe me. So she recounted it again, got the wrong number again, and had me count it again, and finally let us go when I got the right number for a second time.
On top of that, my Uncle called and wants me to help him build a fence in his back yard. I explained to him that I work too many hours a week to build a fence in my "spare time". He didn't seem to hear me. He kept speaking about the fence.
However, there is good news.
In a few weeks, I'm taking a trip to NYC for a few hours to take a tour of NYU. It's only like a 4 hour drive, and it's something to do, I suppose.

Awesome, good luck with that! NYU is a beautiful school with excellent programs, really.. and I hear nothing but praise for it from my friends. Greenwich village is an amazing place! We should meet up for some coffee and philosophic discussion while you're there... lol.
So here's what's going on with me lately. I've been trying to get the thread on Metaphysics/Epist. finished, but I'm having a hard time with it. Two reasons, I guess.
First off, metaphysics is a very challenging subject. Sure, you can be vague and get away with it... but I want to be as accurate as humanly possible. I'm not even convinced that all metaphysicians know what metaphysics is.
Second, I've been distracted lately. It's been a tough week for me, truly it has. I try not to say such things except in the most serious of circumstances. You see, last Tuesday a doctor called my mother. She had been in for some sort of tests but I wasn't sure what they were for. As it turns out.. she has cancer. They say it's one of the "least deadly" forms of cancer, but that isn't much of a consolation as far as we're concerned. The rest of my family already has one trouble or another anyway, so we're all stressed out. She's going in for some sort of surgery on the 4th of May, we should know more about it then. What is worse is that my mother is one of those people who tends to hide her emotions and put on a strong face, but I know inside just how upset she is. She doesn't realize it, but hiding it won't make it any better.. it will make it worse. So I've been spending alot of time with her, just trying to make sure she hangs in there. Oddly, I've been posting here much more than I usually do... I think I've made twice as many posts this week as I do on "regular" weeks. I guess I'm just trying to get my mind off of it, at least in my free time...
Oh, one more thing. The thread changed, so I decided it was time to change my sig as well. What do you guys think? Is it too "over the top"?

lol's aside, that would be cool if it could be arranged

As I said, I'd rather have a good thread than a quick thread. Take your time, however much of it you need.
As it turns out.. she has cancer.
.......****, man. That really sucks. That's where youf focus should be, not on a thread for an internet forum--think about that, first.

Ugh, I have to do some major research on the Net. I applied for a writing post at Games Workshop, thinking that it would be a good post for me. Unfortunately, the tests they want me to do involve documents I don't have. I think I've got one sorted - but the second one's going to be a *****. AND they want good model painting skills. I thought they hired other people to do that.
Forgive my ignorance, but what's 'Games Workshop'?
Heh, I had to point this out when I saw it on CBS news. CBS chose to blast the "good guys" while sucking up to the government.
While the US (and other) governments were forcing the Tobacco industry to virtually commit suicide (ala Ayn Rand), a new front on the war for personal freedom opened up: "the obesity wars".
Some Beaurocrat in Washington telling me what to eat? Heh. Seriously, if Madison were around now, he would have a heart attack. A department of Eductation, and now this...
Friends, you are witnessing the death of a nation.
@T2- I wish you luck at your visit. NYU is a good school; I was recruited their myself when I was 13..but I turned them down due to family issues at home. But I shant forget my campus visit. Truly beautiful. It is good to see that you are pulling your life together.
@ljoss- My heart goes out to you and your family. If it means lesser activity, c'est la vie.
I have been rather busy of late...research for school. Academia is a beautiful country, but the spring brings the rainy season and the summer flowers are being stifled under the down pouring of grades and theses and all nighters. Eventually, the monsoon will subside and the sun will peak upon the florid fields of June.
T2 - Find out the strengths of the NYU math graduate program for me, please?
I kid, I'll do my own research. It is a great campus though, and I'm sure you'll like it. They have a good math program, from what I understand, but I'm thinking that you're not interested in that.
Loonook - what do you research, and at what school?
No, not mathematics...I loathe mathematics with a passion matched only by my loathing of science. No, I'm going to be an English Major with a minor in Philosophy. I've heard the school's great for both.
Also, this summer(probably during my week-or-so off from work in July), I'm going to go visit Boston College, Boston University, Brown, Colombia, and/or Cornell. All of them are in New England or New York, so I can make a day trip out of it.
No, not mathematics...I loathe mathematics with a passion matched only by my loathing of science. No, I'm going to be an English Major with a minor in Philosophy. I've heard the school's great for both.
But Math and Philosophy are so closely entwined, in my opinion. Math is just cleaner, and with more applications to the physical world rather than the mental world.
