I like to look at it like this: Life is a cake. Everyone gets to choose their own icing, more or less, + it all works fine as long as they keep that cake in order. Everything has its right place. Anything can be abused. Problems occur when folks start eating the icing directly from the can. Personal responsibility yada yade bla blah check yo'self before you blah blah yackity schmakkity bla one man's poison is another's quadratic blah blah.
That was from the last post on the other thread, I find it an excellent way to start the new thread.
The title is a lyric from a VERY excellent song by the band The Good Life. It fits the current state of the site. Rumor season...

I mean, the concept of smoking something is centuries old, possibly even eons, and if God truly did create the world, then he would create everything with a purpose (hence his omnipotence).
True, but anything with a purpose can be abused and used for ill, which god may have a problem with. Just cause "something" is okay to smoke does not make everything okay to smoke. It is apparent that most christians have interpreted gods will to be explicitly against marijuana as an okay substance to smoke. Not sure exactly where it is stated or why so many are against it, but the fact remains that the majority of christians are against Marijuana.
I don't think God has a problem with his children smoking a plant that he put on the earth for that purpose.
If you can prove that the purpose was indeed for medicinal and casual use then there is no problem. However, once again I must mention that the majority of christianity seems to disagree with you. Besides, the plant has many other uses, fiber for rope and cloth is probably the best selling point to legalize marijuana...not it's medicinal or recreational possibilities.
I, for one, cannot be certain and neither can you. Perhaps it was a common social occurence, who knows.
So since you are uncertain you are willing to give potential sin the benefit of the doubt?
How exactly will you carry out your research? You do realize that you'll need a larger sample size than just you to validate your research. Any chemical substance can effect different people differently. If you need any help...um...testing....I think I can help. :smile2: *goes to the store and buys a fancy pipe*
Rianalnn,
You lost me with that analogy. Whats wrong with eating the icing before I put it on the cake? Can I choose more than one Icing? Can I have my cake and eat it too?

If anyone wants to stray from this illegal drug debate, I have something interesting to relate...
Last night I watched Fantasia with the sound down, with the Smashing Pumpkin's cd 'Siamese Dream' playing.
If you start the cd so the first few seconds match with the conductor's movements at the beginning, its pretty interesting.
My friend prefers it to Dark Side of the Moon + Wizard of Oz.
It was cool, I guess.

*scratches brain and thinks real hard* Was I arround the last few times the illigal drug debate came around?
I watched Princess Mononoke last night. Great movie. I'm thinking I like anime a bit....haven't had much experience with it, and my local blockbuster doesn't carry much, but the few shows I've seen I've liked. I'm not sure I appreciate anime the way it deserves. The detail is so great that I stop noticing it, kinda like classical music, It's so soothing that it soon becomes background to my own thought. Of course if the detail left, much like if the music was turned off, I'd notice right away......sad I suppose. I wish I knew how to draw...it would be fun to draw charicatures.
On a plus note: I now know where that wierd thing that seds uses in his avatar comes from.

This assumes that God created plants for humans to burn and inhale. Perhaps they were actually meant for other things, like turning light and CO2 into O2 and biomatter, preventing erosion, providing food, beautifying the landscape, and so on.

How do you know that back in Biblical times, they did not engage in the inhalation of marijuana smoke? I, for one, cannot be certain and neither can you. Perhaps it was a common social occurence, who knows.
The way to be certain is to check historical documents - and no, marijuana was not smoked in Biblical times.
I can't begin to counteract all the incorrect things you've said in the last few days. Too many.
I disagree with every point you've made on this topic - all 40 or so - except one. And that is "everything illegal isn't automatically bad or immoral". That's very true. Laws are made by people, and are meant to keep peace and give control to society. They really aren't meant to define what's good and bad, and what's moral and immoral. Some people don't understand that... in fact most people don't. But that's how it is. I don't actually believe in obeying laws myself, except to prevent myself from being punished for breaking them. I believe in looking at why the law was created, and if I agree with that, defining it in my own way. On a straight, safe, dry stretch of open highway, I do 140 k/h instead of 100 k/h. It's illegal, but it doesn't pose any significant risk to myself or others, and doesn't cause me any moral problems. And then there's the "age of consent" law... but I won't do into that here.
Other than that, you've renently said so many hypocritical, inconsistant, offensive, and just downright wrong things that it actually makes me disrespect you and not like you. And that's almost never happened before, so it's saying something!
In brighter news, new thread time = happiness!
Glad to see Kristina make a post.
ToMike... ever thought of dating her sister?
The soulDecision concert was cool. I got kicked and pushed around by a nasty ***** who wanted my front row spot about half way through. When I stood up to her, she got even angrier (she was drunk) and she pretended to fall down. She told a bouncer I punched her (completely a lie) and I got kicked out. I had to wait for my friends to be done (about two hours) outside at midnight on the street. It sucked bigtime. But while I was there, it was great. I think I'm the first person ever to be kicked out of a soulDecision concert... kinda funny in a way. Maybe it'll help pump up my "badboy" image, hmm? Kicked out of a club? Tsk tsk!
I didn't think I was being terribly obscure with my cake-as-life simile.
The Cake: You career path, your hobbies, your friends + family. The things that deeply + truly matter to a (WARNING: YIKES) balanced, productive member of society.
The Icing: Inebriation. Possession. Things that, while they may improve our quality of life (or enjoyment of Life) are No Substitute For Life.
If you have no cake to put icing on, or put the icing before the cake, the end result is usually pretty universal. See the man who put drink before his family, see the kid who gets high but not school. I feel like I'm pandering to a bit of trolling, did I need to spell it out like that? Ah well, I did.

Dag: The reason most Christians are against it is because it's illegal in most places. Christians tend to obey the law. I bet that if marijuana had never been illegal, Christians really wouldn't care. As for sinning, you can't tie sin with everything that's illegal. Really, like alcohol, marijuana has long-term effects on the body that are quite malevolent...
Even using marijuana once or twice a week can have the same consequences as going to bars to drink once or twice a week... Having memory and psychosis issues later in life is just as terrible as having your liver shut down.
Then again, although many of my friends drink and that, I support the banning of alcohol and the ilk... It's just simply bad for the body.
I've seen plenty of people do stupid **** while high.
Read about lots too.
Did you know that 3 teenage males were recently arrested here because they decided to rape a girl at a party while under the influence of marijuana?
Just because it's more common to hear about alcohol influincing judgement doesn't mean marijuana doesn't either.

One of my best friends changed dramatically and got to the point where he was downing bottles of Sutafed and selling **** at school. Hell, there were kids that were going around with bags of weed saftey-pinned under their hoodies (that's the big thing with the druggies here is over-sized hoodies). I think the people that annoy me most are the ones that say doing weed or anything like that doesn't do anything to your body. I usually want to slap them upside the head.
I did pot when I was younger - pretty much every young person in BC has, I'd say... we're quite the producer.
Crystal Methamphetamine is huge here right now too (Speed). Working in psych, I see a lot of "drug induced psychosis" which is another way of saying "gone crazy not because they're mentally ill or because they inherited a disorder from their parents, but because they did speed/cocaine/pot". And yeah, you can get psychotic from pot. Mid September every year we get an influx of "marijuana induced psychosis" patients. All 19 or 20. When college gets back in, a lot of experimentation happens. And in a small number of cases, the person's system just can't handle it, and they lose it.
I'm not talking from a moral standpoint - just a clinical one. This is what I see at work. Take it or leave it.
The probability of suffering psychosis from smoking pot has got to be very low, though. I mean, millions of people smoke pot and if you get 15-20 people suffering from psychosis, P(psychosis) is still very low.

Low numbers, true, but it still happens. Plus each person is different and can take more or less than the guy next to him. My cousin is smaller but he downed vodka and passed out with alcohol poisoning while everyone else there were fine. Because of how different everyone is, and the fact that smoking pot or doing other drugs does for a fact result in psychosis ins some cases, it's always a risk because you don't know if you will or not. It's like that with any drug. Some guy could take a hit of acid and live and become an addict, another guy never comes back to reality and it screws up his mind, and the next croaks over.
Anyway when it comes to messing your mind up or something like that, most people never think about it until it happens. Maybe it needs to happen to more people so they won't want to do it anymore.
While I'm not one of those people that goes around preaching to people how they shouldn't do drugs, drink or smoke, I will say I hold the fact like a badge of honor that I've never done any of those three

Same here.

I disagree about Christians not being against marijuana if it wasn't illegal. The majority of the real solid, consistently church-going Christians still would be, for the same reason that they don't smoke or drink..they have that perception that, because man was supposedly created in God's image, man shouldn't tarnish the temple that is his body by smoking/drinking. But, caffeine is okay...and communion always involves at least a small amount of wine..hurrah for Christian Logic.
I don't think that people should make such a big deal out of marijuana..honestly. If some kids got high and raped a girl, they probably would have gotten around to raping her eventually anyway. It's irritating when people use getting high/drinking as a cop-out for their actions..alcohol doesn't make you do anything, it just makes it easier for you to do things.
Seds: I think it's awesome that you have 4K+ songs on your Ipod.
I've occasionally had a drink or two for Independence Day, but nothing more besides that really... And of course, at those times, my parents allow me to drink said beverages.
Cyan - Yes, they might have raped her anyways. However, by using marijuana and thus inhibiting their better judgement, they were more likely to commit said act. We have DUI laws for the same reason; drivers that are drunk are more likely to cause a wreck and do harms to themselves and others.
What about spiritual drug use? Peyote, purple mushrooms, kava kava?
Soma (not the trendy drug in Huxley's Brave New World or the Zodiac family in Fruits Basket!) is. . . Nobody knows. From http://www.huxley.net/soma/ : The Indo-Iranians were an ancient people who had their homeland somewhere in Central Asia. About 4,000 years ago they split into two distinct groups. One group, the Indo-Aryans, moved south to the Indus Valley; the other became the ancient Iranian peoples. Both preserved a vast body of religious oral literature which was only later written down. These scriptures are the Rig Veda and the Avesta, of the Indians and Iranians respectively. Both works describe rituals in which a plant with hallucinogenic properties was consumed. The plant was called soma by the Indians and haoma by the Iranians. Although some of the descendants of these peoples still perform their rituals, the identity of the sacred entheogenic plant has been lost and non-psychoactive substitutes are now used in place of the mysterious soma/haoma. In addition to the various non-psychoactive plants that have been used as soma substituted in both the Zoroastrian and Hindu traditions, a great number of candidates for soma have been put forward by Western investigators over the last two hundred years. Among the suggestions of more or less convincing candidates have been cannabis, Ephedra, a fermented alcoholic drink, Syrian rue, rhubarb, ginseng, opium and wild chicory.
Side note: The Rig Veda is neat.
'seds, is the new G'rillaz sweet or sour? I really like the original release. . .
I agree with Cyan. If Marijuana suddenly became legal I stongly doubt the Christian population would accept it, let alone become users. They're not against it because of any man made law, but because of a higher law.
Cyan, to most LDS caffiene is not okay. I think It's most....I know BYU has it universaly banned from it's campus. Same with Smoking, Drinking, coffie, and any other substance abuse.

Before I moved overseas I bought an Olympus Camedia C-5050 + it is one sweet machine. I think it set me back US$400~500. Sweet digital goodness, + my personal professional photographer uses it all the time. The memory card it came with was rather small (tends to hold 20-30 pictures, depending on resolution setting), but if you have another $200 budgeted, there ya go.
You can generally get a high quality digital camera for $500 these days, capable of fairly professional photos in the higher resolutions. I don't see why that wouldn't suffice, if you learned how to properly use all its functions.

This is a sig. Yes it is.

Cyan - Yes, they might have raped her anyways. However, by using marijuana and thus inhibiting their better judgement, they were more likely to commit said act. We have DUI laws for the same reason; drivers that are drunk are more likely to cause a wreck and do harms to themselves and others.
/me has no I-Pod on which to have any songs...

I really like the original release. . .

Congrats on getting the go ahead!
