Well there's a term in Sociology called "oreintalism". It emerged during the Post-Colonial theory days of Sociology. (If you are unfamiliar with Colonial theory, it's very hard to explain. But it occurred in much of the "western" Social Sciences and was a period where the colonizers were trying to explain the benefits of colonization to justify their actions. Think "white man's burden" and "Social Darwinism.")
Anyway...
"Orientalism" (at least in Sociology) is the process of talking about another group of people as if you somehow "understand" or are "above" that group of people. Basically, it's passing judgment on a group of people you are not part of. While Post-Colonial Theory (and Modernism and Postmodernism) is a relic of the past, Orientalism is still frowned upon quite heavily in the Sociological community. This of course led to Sociologists trying to figure out ways to discuss a culture or subculture somewhat foreign* to them. It radically changed the way sociologists intake and process data.
My comment was just me stating I didn't want to engage in Oreintalism. Do I feel as if I could adequately describe what being a furry is? Perhaps, but I don't think it would be a fair assessment at all.

* - by foreign I don't mean by nationality, I just mean "something that is not my own."
Oh dear. I hope I'm not coming off with a tone of Orientalism. I'm not trying conceptualize the "other" and thus maintain a comfortable psychological stance of superiority towards it. I'm trying to, through conversation, bridge the self/other gap and see the elements of self in other and other in self.
I mean, it's obvious that we never quite fully understand any other person's fullness of their internal life. But on the flip side, why talk at all if we can't genuinely relate something of our experiences to each other. To put it in a somewhat silly visualization - I don't need to necessarily go all Mortal Kombat and rip out a person's heart from their chest to feel it beating in my hand. Sometimes, it is enough to just touch the skin at the right point, remain quiet, and feel the pulse. That's what I'm trying to get a feel for here. A pulse. A sense for the rhythm, the way another's internal life dance's in contrast to my own.

Maybe my fellow Gaymers can help me out in another matter that's been on my mind. This one a little more lighthearted. In honor of Magic's first explicity (albeit subtle) gay card - Guardians of Meletis - I wanted to do a card alter. I was thinking of putting some iconic gay couple type image to replace the ordinary card art. Like Apollo and Midnighter or some such.
Anyone have any great brainstorms they want to share? Anything you think would look great? Or send a great message? Or get a good laugh?
And how insane has Chicago been this week after the marriage equality thing in Illinois?
There was a celebration en masse, with engagements announced left and right on Facebook. The mayor and some news stations showed up at one of the bigger bar's party, which was pretty cool. I've been fighting a cold, have a busy week at work, and a busy weekend coming up, so I've been a lame dork and stayed home.

Been dealing with depression due to my current life situation lately.
In brighter news, though, me and the boyfriend played Standard for the first time since Scars rotated out at the Theros Game Day. He ran Mono-B Devotion and I ran Mono-R devotion. Neither of us did well, but that was a given since we built our decks at the last moment. Regardless, it was really fun and nice to play Magic again, since we have to hide the cards from his hardcore Christian father and step mother that think they're tarot cards.

Also, the new Commander decks are really fun - I'm loving them.

It took me a while to think of the perfect idea, but the great tragic love story (from Torchwood) of Captain Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones is heartbreaking and beautiful.

Those are nightmarish conditions to have to live in - to have to hide simple, harmless fun. The foolishness of some people.
DrWorm - How do you manage to see so well into my soul?! I love that Torchwood romance idea. The only snag is that I was hoping to do a more cartoon based alter because that's more where my skillset lies. Photorealistic stuff is... tough. But thanks for the idea donation.
Tonight the Mr. International Rubber contest weekend ended, and I had a fantastic night with my hubby, our friends, and visitors at showtunes and disco night. Was an absolute blast

I was in ****ing tears when Ianto died...it was just so unfair. It was good writing and great TV, but I had to shut it off and rage a bit when it happened. After that I had the attached image as my wallpaper for a bit.
Torchwood as a whole was definitely darker than Doctor Who.
As big a fan as I am of the Whoverse, I still have not finished the last series of Torchwood. Don't know why. I also have not watched the last two episodes of Doctor Who because I know that they are the last few with Matt Smith and I don't want it to end. It is just weird, I do it with shows and story heavy video games. I will get to the point right before the end and just stop and take forever to get back to it because I can't stand for it to end.
As huge a fan of Harkness I am sad to say I've never seen any of torchwood. It just wasn't who enough for me. (Not past the first episode so I guess "never" isn't completely accurate") I have to go back and give it a shot.

Yea, I saw Torchwood before I started watching modern era Doctor Who, so even though I knew it was connected I did not have that as an expectation. I think you need to try and see it as an independent entity as much as possible in order to really dig it. Also, I kind of have a little thing for gap-toothed (diastema) women with heavy accents (by my ears), so Eve Myles floated my boat to begin with.
I actually think the pilot for Torchwood is pretty meh. I had to get a couple episodes into it before I got hooked.

Working at Toys 'R' Us in a seasonal position. The said during the interview that they retain 50% of their seasonal workers. I'm super excited.

South Park season 13 episode 5 - Fishsticks. Not the best of episodes, but worth watching solely for their treatment of Kanye. *evil smile*
If you don't feel like watching an entire episode at least look up the finale song - Gay Fish - on YouTube.

Aww, thanks so much, MTGS!
In related news, my best friend got me 4x Thoughtseize and 4x Hero's Downfall for my birthday. @_@
I just hope they all have a place in either Esper Control or BUG Control. :x
