Hmm we could do our own Clan Contest. We think of something fun, then go to another clan and slap them with a white silk glove and challenge them. If they accept we do...whatever we thought of and see who wins. Preferably a zero-sum game that doesn't require a committee.
But what could it be?
I have some really bad luck in Skyrim, my meatshields keep dying and they are a fairly limited resource. Wow these people are fragile or Deathlords are more powerful then they look. Whichever.
So, funny story. Set my game to Expert for my new guy (Sneaking, Illusion, and Poisons), and my girlfriend gets on to play her account. She got stomped. Hard. And complained about it and when I got home from work and showed her how to change the difficulty, it just made her more angry
Similar thing happened with LoL. I have it set to smartcast all my abilities (Targets where the mouse is hovering, doesn't require a second click) and she was so confused. I was watching that game and told her "Oh, I don't know why.". So many awesome Ashe arrows that game
putting together a user survey for a time management interface design assignment...
Irmis I'd say
death<----rightaboutherelord
is where these guys seemed powerful enough to me.
Your idea about Clan Contests is basically what I was thinking. I'm going to think about that absently. To further than end, why don't our members volunteer their peerless skills?
I rawk at concentration and memory games. ... but that won't come up over the internet.
OH GOD
Fire Emblem 6 normal mode was like any other fire emblem game Hard mode.
Fire Emblem 6 hard mode is like..... warfare. You have to win with tactics and enemy bad decisions rather than the superior quality of your smaller forces. The enemy has everything you do, times 3 or more. Oh, and the mad haxx timing exploits I described before about spawning and attacking in the same phase without warning (on first run).
So, actually rewarding. Still frustrating.
Too bad Roy only promotes on the last (non-extra) level, so it's literally impossible he can be a decent unit past a certain point, or ever fully level in normal conditions in final chapters.
That's why we have Dieck and Tate, lol.

Hey guys,
So I have been wondering this irmis but why not be your henchman's meatshield? I have not played skyrim but aren't the player characters usually stronger then the npc's in most games?
This clan contest idea intrigues me, One thing that has confused me is why the clan contest is never a magic tournament? There is plenty of free online apps that could be used to run it and I would love a good edh tournament. Other then that I have some abilities with art, I am currently considering whether I should start doing card alters or not...
In other news, the glasses I was talking about are amazing. They are called Gunnar glasses. They come in with an amber tinted lense and they really do lower the stain that my eyes feel. I can game much longer now without getting a headache or having to wet my eyes. It's amazing! Huge fan.
Hey guys,

For the same reason your creatures block for you instead of the other way around?
We don't need the clan council, we can pick a clan like the Izzet and challenge them directly. We can handle the paperwork. Since its just two clans there won't be a lot of work involved. I think direct clan-to-clan challenges might be a bit more fun then the committee things we have now. We just need to decide on what we want them to lose to us in.
Hey everyone! Sorry for my absence over the past few days (although doesn’t look like I missed much) I have been busy with life, ya know the normal stuff. We just had valentine’s day and I have also decided to start altering magic cards for my edh decks and make them look prettier. My first alters are nothing special and I am merely painting anime icons onto land cards as a way to familiarize myself with the paints, blending, and the difference of painting on the card surface as compared to other things I have painted. In other news I have recently discovered a new MMORPG called DragonSoul. It’s just in the games beta testing stage but I was wondering if any of you have heard of it and whether you have heard good or bad things about it. I am downloading it this weekend and have a plan to test it with my friend on Monday so I will give you my opinions on the game sometime after that.
Well now that life catch up is done I can get on to a subject that you all probably care more about CONTROL! I have finally looked over a lot of my cards and figured out what I want to build as my next edh deck. The general will be Progenitus and with this comes an inherit upside and downside; upsided is I get to play control with ALL FIVE COLORS and any card that I want, but the downside is mana smoothing can be difficult. Now the theme of this deck isn’t just straight control; it is 5 color planeswalker control. When most people hear this they think just one of every planswalker thrown into a deck but I will not just be putting one of every planeswalker in the deck because I don’t feel they all fit the control theme with their abilities. Another reason I am deciding not to play every planeswalker is because with each new set there seems to be a new planeswalker with it and magic will get to the point where there will be to many planeswalkes for the deck so figure I will get ahead of the problem and just start cutting now and then I can just select which planeswalkers get added if any with each new set. As of right now there are 28 planeswalkers in total. So the first topic I would like some help on is discussing which planeswalkers make the cut for the deck and which I can leave out.
Opinions? Do you feel any aren’t strong enough to include? Do you feel I have missed any that I should consider more?
Other topics we can discuss later for this deck is what other cards can enhance the planeswalkers, how to protect myself and my walkers, and what ways I can/should try to win.
Grr, I was making a post and accidentally backed out. Time to start again.
Thanks to our own Horseshoe_Hermit we have a new prettier color wheel image on the front page. Please take notice!
As for Allwin, I was recently going over the very same idea you were in my head, but here is the problem. I imagine most of the game I would spend fixing mana, and casting walkers, only to have their durdley type creatures kill them. Since most walkers and pseudo expensive (4-7 mana) I imagine there wont be a lot of ways to protect them. That said you asked for opinions so here are mine.
Tezzeret should make the cut, he helps tutor up color fixing artifacts, or game-changers. Definitely should be in. The rest in that pile I agree with.
Neither Sarkhan should be in. They do not affect the board enough to warrant inclusion.
Elspeth, Jace, and the other Tezzie should not be in.
Ajani Goldmane should not go in. You have to think that you are only going to get 1-2 activations out of each, just like in a regular match. So take away their ultimate and ask do the 2 abilities =/ the cost of casting the card.
Rinse and repeat for the rest, I dont have the time to go over each card. As for enhancing, I suppose you want sturdy blockers, and things that proliferate. Stuff like Contagion Clasp, to get their counters up. Best I can do.
WE need more discussion up in here, where has it all gone? I realize I have been gone for a week but when I am on my big break from work, I like to spend as much time as possible with family and schtuff.
I am actually for clan to clan challenges. I dont feel the need to weigh in more then that, but approve us following up on this idea. EDIT : BRing your own standard sounds awesome. It would be fun if we could do 3 pack draft from any mtg block ever. Id love to have a reason to draft something like Tempest block.
@Oceanos, I still dont get the hype machine that is LOL.
Allwin, I recommend experimenting with alternative fonts for message board communiques. MTGS only supports so many, but look into serif fonts.
As you can see , this is what you get with Book Antiqua:

This crazy idea occurred to me probably because of my information design classes. Of course, you must personally identify with a font you use if you're going to pick a different one.
Now, regarding the Gunnar glasses, let's get our facts straight: The type of product. The brand you're actually wearing. Some quote prices.
Simultaneously, I'll work out a format in which we can publish that. Then, with both, your research can be made available as the first informational paper produced by the Tolarian Academy! (How awesome does that sound?)
The fact my class runs just too late to ever get to Friday Night Magic is a bummer for me. I really want to own DKA. The flying Puppeteer is a must, the transform Aura is a must... in fact most of the blue Spirits are a must for me.
I had a n idea for a card while thinking about bookkeeping. (This is how my ideas work.) If I remember it, I will make bookkeeping magepunk. You'll all see.
edit: Actually, it comes full circle and relates to blue, green, and control.
The above are an example of data.
Now the word 'information' is often seen with data, but in a very deep sense, it is completely different. This tiny little post will be about justifying the treatment of 'data' and 'information' as two really different things, and investigating the words for some insight in either metaphysics, or computer science. I've been coming to think that these may not be just semantic nonstuffs that go poof when you aren't saying the words; I think 'data' points out something real in the world, and, if analysed in a certain way, the meaning, the purpose, of certain scientific tools, such as computing, could be altered revolutionised in regards to this concept of the world by this term, 'data'.
Then I'll get some card designs out of it, and some input on Green as a control color.
(And the big aside: Honestly, if I didn't know about Green / Blue , the Color Pie... I don't think I would have tried thinking about this metaphysical question like this)
1.
The following is an example of information:
Name: Grumlin. Age: 55
Income: 12 000 Address: 59 Avery
It often arises in information science , the question of just what it is that computers do (better: what computation is; 'computer' might sidetrack us with discussing hardware standards, machine instructions, and the marvels of digitality). There is a question of what it is that computer people are actually good at, in addition to what it is that the theoreticians are investigating when they prove things like the halting problem, or the lower bound on the runtime, as a function of input size, on any correct sorting algorithm (with direct-access addressing). Computer science seems to say a lot of mathematical things. Yet, even though Logic (a discipline of philosophy) and Mathematics eventually realized they were the same thing (nearly), computer science has not been called mathematics. (Something worth confirming as a research project.)
This is not about what programmers do, or software design / systems analysis. Those are something like engineering, only not because what engineers do is amazing, and the entire profession amounts to signing that you know 1) your name goes on everything you do, and 2) if you ever mess up, people can die.
This is bound up with issues for physics , as "Measurement" seems to come up when I read examples, used by authors in books for "semi-educated normal people" , to discuss computability, or Human problem solving (thought).
There are also the practical questions: When has an information system done its job? That is, an automated problem solver: a user interface, a database warehouse, a knowledge system; one of these is transforming some problem scenario, to a scenario that is 'useable' by a Human. The machine doesn't do any thinking - thinking is hard - and it's not that the Human doesn't do any thinking - there is a not-understood depth of reasoning that occurs for a sentence or graph indicator or something to be understood by a Human and incorporated into a Human intention. But there is some job that gets done when a signal is sent from A to B, and then decrypted, unpackaged, resynthesized, and (A) played as a voice over a phone, or (B) shown as decklists from Kobe on your screen.
There's something nontrivial that occurs when , say, a website renders nicely for you. But if your browser has a web developer mode - and the latest Firefox version has an Inspect Element option by default - you can see that equipping the web document's source with the -data- to show you that -information- is by no means simple. The skillful web developer (in some senses, programmer, although browsers do the work, by using the web standards) makes websites look effortless, but something smart is going on when you can look at the browser and thinking has been done for you.
My investigation into the question comes into looking at what someone means if he says the thinking has been done for you, even if we recognize the machine did not think, and the labour of thinking was not merely passed around, but actually transformed - possibly in such a way that less thinking was done overall. Someone pre-solved the problem, and split it up so that two separate acts of comprehension could get the information into the user's head, but with ease on the user's part, and with error-correctness from the developer's part.
*~*~*~
I will leave this here as an abstract and invite questions until one or more of you is clear on where I'm going. I need to put more time into something to know when I'm making enough references to the true starting point. If we get there, I'll actually start exploring the words the way I've laid out to do.
Along the way, either way, I can drop Green and Blue card designs.
Also I'd like to import my BlazBlue legendary card designs. Anyone into that?

Ive been real busy the last three nights @ work grinding online poker. I have turned 200 into roughly 3k ($3,075 to be exact). And now dont know what to do with it. I might buy back into magic. The irony is I made about 200/night at work, so through 3 nights thats 600, 5x less then I made playing poker while at work. My brain is fried putting in all this effort and math.

I have been trying to get a clans MtG tournament going for some time now. But I would want to play. If anyone is interested in helping out, or needs help with this, please pm me:) Bebo and I was on the verge of figuring it all out and he became inactive:/
Even if the tournament wasnt done as a clans contest, I still think it would be fun to do as a clans event.
Its up to 4k now, but I am taking a break. IT was 4.6k (I Was going for 5, sfobv) then I lost 600 to some tough beats, so decided to give it a break for a few. Withdraw my winnings, enjoy, then re-deposit and hope to repeat. Of course, I deposited 550 of the 4k, so its really like 3.4 winnings. EH.
That really is aw all of text too, I dont quite know what to make of it.
@DigimonDad - I support this, but dont know what exactly needs to be done, care to elaborate?

@MindCraver, the format would need to be decided, and what free program to use, (or even mtgo, if there is enough support, but I doubt there will be), then organization needs to be had. I am a rules adviser, but I'm sure we can pull a judge from somewhere in clans if needed.
I think if this is gonna happen, we should start there:)
We used to (they probably still) play forum MTG tournaments in the Legacy forum section. We used MWS (Magic Workstation). MWS has deck ID numbers that allow you to prove that your deck is constant (and never starting out pre-sideboarded) throughout the matches. We delegated a week to each pairing to finish their match, and all communication for setting up the matches was required to be through PMs so that we could log the communication if it came down to the point where one individual was trying hard to get a game going while the other was non-communicative, and the individuals "mod"ing the tournament would be able to decide whether to award a draw or a victory (if such was called into question) based on the communication logs.
A clan-to-clan/global-clan-contest Magic tournament sounds pretty fun! It is also much easier to do on a clan level if you have just one or a few members of the clan playing on behalf of the clan, with backup clan members to play in their stead should scheduling an available time prove difficult.
Allwinapprentice, you should upload some of your alters!
@analogcooldad Thanks. I can see that. I am well versed with Mr. Xanth.
I REALLY wish we could do limited, if not I am afraid I just dont have the interest to play standard, and have NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO interest in playing legacy. Hrmpf.
I realize that seems like I am being difficult, but I would help mod this and volunteer one of my clanees to play should I find one I trusted.
I am really against MWS. We could do a pauper tournament on modo, and the clans can pitch together from their members and make it like a 10$ limit. (most clans can afford this I would hope). Or a pauper singleton. I dont really --DO-- these formats, but would make exemption. Is there no similar way using Cockatrice (I approve of that program) with verifying as there is with using MWS Xanth?

@H_H: I own the Gunnar PHANTOM in Glossy Onyx. They sell for 79.99. You can purchase them online or from your local best buy store (this is where I got mine but the selection is more limited). You can get them with your regular glasses prescription for those gamers with eyeglasses already. The website for them is: www.gunnars.com Also, I will start playing with more text as per your suggestion when I get my interwebz back, currently I am doing this all from my iphone and I don’t really feel like going to that extent right now to start looking through them but I will.
@Mindslavor: Very nice work with the poker! That is actually one of the games that I never took the time to learn :p. And thanks for the input on the control. I am currently working on finding cards to protect myself and the walkers. This leads me to a rules questions that someone here might be able to answer actuall…. How does damage get done to planeswalkers? Does it get done to you and then redirected at the walker or is it done directly to the walker. And say I had a forcefield in play, could I reduce the damage done to my walker to one? Also, you said Tezzie should go in but you never clarified which Tezz you meant should go in and which shouldn’t. Mind clarifying now?
@Oceanos: One day we shall play LOL together! But I agree I have recently been playing other games too, I am just getting tired of the trolls in ranked games. I am almost back up to 1200+ elo though
@Xanth: I will post some up when I get the time to finish them and my imterwebz is back. They are nothing special right now just some characters on top of land cards. I didn’t trust myself enough to start painting on my expensive cards till I had some practice with it.
@Clan: I would love to do this magic tournament and would offer my assistance to the organizers but I would really like to play in it so taking the spot of organizing it really is not desired. As for the format I think limited or singleton would be fun. I would like if the format was something out of the ordinary, let’s make it “special”. I agree with Mindslavor and have no interest in playing standard, modern, legacy, or vintage. I want something creative. I would second the idea of a pauper tournament with a price cap on decklist and use modo as a medium for us all to meet as a tournament to start with. A idea I had would for each clan to create a clan EDH deck. They pick the general that works with their clan ideals and then build a deck around that and then we pit them against each other in a battle of the clan legends. (Can you tell edh is my favorite format :p) We could again set a deck price limit on this although it would by nature be higher than a pauper tournament. This would have to be a contest that each clan individually accepted because of the inherit price in it. Although I still like the idea of slapping another clan with a white silk glove more than a global tournament, something so medieval and kick ass about doing it that way I feel.
Later I will come back and post up some updates on the planeswalker 5 color control deck.
@AllForOneApprentice: Some day. I have just stayed away from Ranked. People don't seem to understand: the meta is the way it is for a reason. I don't care if you try out cool new things in Normals (Draft), but unless you're really high ELO, we are trying to go up in rating, so please just follow the meta for once, as it gives us the best chance to win at this level.
@MindSlavor: Once I have money to deposit, I shall actually use Bovada. Did you get anything for referring me? I would imagine you'd have to wait till I actually invested money into the site, though.
@Without paying a ridiculous amount for shipping, nowhere in my near vicinity sells the Gunnar prescription glasses. Not that I need them anymore, and it'd just be easier to get contacts again and the regular glasses.
On the tournament, about how long would it take, do you think, to have a clanswide tournament?
In a challenge to the Izzet clan (because they obviously are whom we must slap first), how long would we have for those games?
What could we get done if we forced the games to occur inside of seven days?
Sup, Xansabelt. Keeping up with that card alters hobby?

Okay, cool. This data will achieve COMPLETE. SITEWIDE. SATURATION.
I'll clear my plan for that with you so that your research gets you proper credit.
@On your question, I'll let you in on the workings, BUT this is actually kind of goofy because of how it is the controller of the source of the damage who "chooses to redirect". This interacts in a goofy way with the rule which says that you, as the player whose peeps are getting gunned down, choose how to relatively order applicable replacement effects. (see rule 616.1)
First, it matters whether it is combat or damage outside combat. With Forcefield, it is combat , and that's handled by attacking a planeswalker directly. The planeswalker is attacked instead of the defending player (but the player is still considered the 'defending player'. Newer cards interact with what you are attacking exactly, older cards mostly are not errata'd. However, some rules interact with those old wordings in ways that extend the 'player is planeswalker' metaphor.
Noncombat Damage is dealt to planeswalkers in virtue of the game's singular "inherent" replacement effect. It is dealt directly to planeswalkers since the dealing event to the player - you - never occurs. To get this replacement to apply, first there must be a situation at which damage would be dealt to a player. (Just as that word is seen in (almost) every replacement effect.)
BUT this is actually odd. Since you may apply replacement effects in any order, you may apply an effect which would reduce damage you take to 1, and then apply the other effect. "Applying" this effect, because of how it is worded, means giving the other player the chance to choose to redirect.
IF you are talking about noncombat damage, in a scenario, in which you for some reason wanted your planeswalker to take more damage than less, you could actually Sophie's choice your opponent by applying the redirect rule first, then as your opponent makes his or her choice with that (see 306.7, quoted below), you are either on the receiving end of damage, or your planeswalker is - to which something like Worship would not apply. bad example. what's that card from Urza's Saga. something bubble. Force bubble?
306.7. If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 614.9) and is subject to the normal rules for ordering replacement effects (see rule 616). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the damage as the redirection effect is applied.
Later I will come back and post up some updates on the planeswalker 5 color control deck.
I look forward to it.
What? Color tags don't work like this anymore?!? Insanity!
Well I am extremely upset right now and feel the need to rant about it on a forum where people will understand my frustration since most of my friends on other social sites don't play magic. So my girlfriend has work early tomorrow I came home early from her place and decided I would finish my first alters before bed. Everything looked great they were finally done. I took my marker and outlined the borders of the character and defined the lines. I let that dry and then I was ready to put on the clear coat. I get my brush dip dip, brush down the card and then I find out that the marker runs with acrylic paint!!!!! My entire card now has black streaks running down it. I now have to start all over! It's extremely annoying, I dont know whether to cry or fullfill my urge to burn the failure. The only good thing is that it is just an island and not one of my pricey rares I plan to alter eventually. But still it is alot of time that just got ruined. Grrrrrrr....
That's not Magic, that's card alters.
But
I sort of quasi-remember some kind of tragedy like this. Doing something, then losing work...
OH WAIT, IT'S LIKE THAT COMPUTER CRA-
no not like that. More with physical objects.
Yeah. Vent heard.
So I'm considering using the last field of the OP to be links to 'works published out of the Academy'. Next step is how to do that - dedicate single posts to said works? Make up pdf/txt/doc/html documents and attach them (fit under 40K or something)? Thinking about it.
At the same time we could put you in contact with an editor to make that info printworthy (formatted). If Ilvaldi will return I can pick his brain about what exactly he knows vis a vis that. (vis a vis... that )
In other news I have determined a fantastic approach to Color Pie article writin'. I am just flyin through it on my laptop now. I'll simply have to ensure I don't use it as an excuse to procrast during reading week.

@Allwin I am sorry to hear your first outing was not a success, but stay at it, if you become good enough I would love to commission you for some work. Despite not playing I have a pension for fine arts. Also I meant Tezzeret the Seeker, hes good for toolboxing mana-fixing artifacts. Seems decent in this build.
@FryKid I answered you on facebook.
I bought our own Irmis a playset of Stasis(ii) or (es) ? on Starcity the other day. I was told he had never owned them, nor had he ever been punched in the face for a game of magic.

Huge fan.
Control is the ultimate expression of power.
IRL….
Here are the ones that I think should go in:
Sculptor[/CARD], Sorin Markov, [CARD]Ajani
Goldmane[/CARD], Ajani Vengeant, [CARD]Chandra
Nalaar[/CARD], Chandra, the Firebrand, [CARD]Elspeth
Knight Errant[/CARD], Garruk Relentless, [CARD]Garruk
Wildspeaker[/CARD], Garruk Primal Hunter, [CARD]Gideon
Jura[/CARD], Karn Liberated, [CARD]Liliana of the
Veil[/CARD], Liliana Vess, [CARD]Nicol Bolas,
Planeswalker[/CARD], [CARD]Sorin Lord of
Innistrad[/CARD], and [CARD]Venser, the
Sojourner[/CARD]
Here are the ones that did not make the cut in my opinion:
Koth of the Hammer, and
Tezzeret the Seeker
Here are the ones that I am not sure of currently:
Sarkhan the Mad, Sarkhan Vol,
and [CARD]Tezzeret Agent of
Bolas[/CARD]
Opinions? Do you feel any aren’t strong enough to include? Do you feel I have missed any that I should consider more?
Other topics we can discuss later for this deck is what other cards can enhance the planeswalkers, how to protect myself and my walkers, and what ways I can/should try to win.
As always thanks for the advice and comments!
-The Tolarian Apprentice

Lately it's been a drag, mostly because I don't like the company much, despite being awesome in many areas. More Skyrim than LoL for me lately.
Grumlin 33 51

The above are an example of data.
Now the word 'information' is often seen with data, but in a very deep sense, it is completely different.
This tiny little post will be about justifying the treatment of 'data' and 'information' as two really different things, and investigating the words for some insight in either metaphysics, or computer science. I've been coming to think that these may not be just semantic nonstuffs that go poof when you aren't saying the words; I think 'data' points out something real in the world, and, if analysed in a certain way, the meaning, the purpose, of certain scientific tools, such as computing, could be
alteredrevolutionised in regards to this concept of the world by this term, 'data'.Then I'll get some card designs out of it, and some input on Green as a control color.
(And the big aside: Honestly, if I didn't know about Green / Blue , the Color Pie... I don't think I would have tried thinking about this metaphysical question like this)
The following is an example of information:

I have been trying to get a clans MtG tournament going for some time now. But I would want to play. If anyone is interested in helping out, or needs help with this, please pm me:) Bebo and I was on the verge of figuring it all out and he became inactive:/
Even if the tournament wasnt done as a clans contest, I still think it would be fun to do as a clans event.

@MindSlaver, what he said.

Hey everyone!
IF you are talking about noncombat damage, in a scenario, in which you for some reason wanted your planeswalker to take more damage than less, you could actually Sophie's choice your opponent by applying the redirect rule first, then as your opponent makes his or her choice with that (see 306.7, quoted below), you are either on the receiving end of damage, or your planeswalker is - to which something like
Worship would not apply.bad example. what's that card from Urza's Saga. something bubble. Force bubble?I look forward to it.

But
I sort of quasi-remember some kind of tragedy like this.

I am really busy with work and life lately, and apologize for my sparse postings. I really will get around to commenting on H_H's wall 'o text soon. Perhaps tomorrow. But as for things I can get to quickly..
These things........I like very much.
