You might not have been aware of this but President Trump's appointed FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a former lawyer from Verizon, is expected to announce a vote on a plan to end Net Neutrality as soon as November 22nd, the day before Thanksgiving. Millions of Americans have spoke out against this plan, but the FCC, under the sway of corporations like Comcast, AT&T, Time Warner, and Verizon, are moving forward nonetheless.
The corporations that want to take complete control of the web and dismantle Net Neutrality are the same people that finance the campaigns of climate deniers and sell advertisements to fossil-fuel polluters. It's time for Congress to step in and defend the open internet just as they did under the Obama Administration when Republicans tried to pass SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act), PIPA (Protect IP Act) through the House and Senate but ultimately failed.
I urge everyone here to spread the word and sign this online petition before it's too late:
"Restriction breeds creativity." - Sheldon Menery on EDH / Commander in Magic: The Gathering
"Cancel Culture is the real reason why everyone's not allowed to have nice things anymore." - Anonymous
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" - Mark 8:36
"Most men and women will grow up to love their servitude and will never dream of revolution." - Aldous Huxley, Brave New World
"Every life decision is always a risk / reward proposition." - Sanjay Gupta
This kind of BS is always sold to the people with arguments for why commercializing public services will lead to better prices, quality, and increased options for consumers. While in reality, this has never been the case with any utiliy so far. Non-neutral internet will consolidate the power of the big media conglomerates who have the commercial power to enforce high speed access to their content while simultaneously making the internet more expensive for everyone else wanting the same. The internet is the biggest market disruptor so far, launching society into the age of information. This will seriously halt that progression as existing businesses protect their outdated business models by increasing the barrier to entry for new companies.
That's even ignoring the moral question of wether we as a society find it acceptable if the utility (in this case the internet) is unavailable to a part of the populace. If the answer is no, then commercialization should not even be considered.
It's exactly things like this that really makes me wonder why countries do not build their own internet. I'm no expert but AFAIK it's still American owned. Why doesn't Europe build it's own internet infrastructure build upon te same technical principles as the American one so they can work together but nevertheless is under Europe's control? Same for other countries I guess.
