Betty Joan Perske. "Baby". One of the elder stateswomen of Hollywood and last survivors of its golden age died yesterday. She was 89. She is of course best remembered for her roles alongside Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, and Key Largo, but she had an extraordinarily long career, earning an Oscar nomination for The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996, and doing some perhaps surprising voice-acting work. Did you like the English dub of Howl's Moving Castle? That was her. She regularly tops lists of the most beautiful women of all time (including mine). She was also a political activist, speaking out against McCarthyism and the Hollywood blacklist. And she, with her co-star and husband, has a disease named after her.
