In this hypothetical where you claim I am unable for a civil conversation,
Not a hypothetical.
I can't believe people don't consider that at least a minor level of affection if not overall approval of Putin. So either she is somewhat attracted to the man, or she actually likes him for some reason or another. I mean you don't see Obama's biggest critics asking him if he will be in a picture with him, so they can put up silly tag lines next to it on social media.
I'm referring to this and what I read from it. You seem to be implying that showing any sort of cordial behavior to someone->you approve of, or at least condone their actions.
The reverse is simple. If you do not approve/condone someone's actions, then you wouldn't be cordial/civil with them.
But then
I have carried on conversations with quite a few people that I fully disapprove of for one reason or another with great civility.
seems contradictory to the above quote. So i'm not sure what to think anymore.
Edit-
So, I thought about this while sleeping, and came to the conclusion that I may be making an unwarranted jump in my reasoning.
That being said, I'm still not sure how you took the athlete taking a selfie and tweeting that and conclude "I can't believe people don't consider that at least a minor level of affection if not overall approval of Putin. Just because I do something with someone, doesn't mean that I approve of their activities... I could (and have, incidentally) take pictures with political leaders whose policies that I clearly disagree with, and do it merely because I've recognized that man as an important figure and thought it would be nice to have a picture with him for posterity's sake.
Of course, she might have had a crush on Putin, but there's nothing to suggest that.
Anyways looking at the way most Russians are, they elected a leader that represents their view points. Russians basically treat the LGBT community in Russia as societal outcasts. I strongly feel that if most Russians saw two men kiss in public it would probably cause a riot.
Really? Would you argue that since Obama got elected, the U.S. elected a leader that most represents their view points? Never mind the fact that so few people vote these days that anyone claiming a majority seems... silly to begin with.

Summary- Principal is hated for dragging children down hallway; writer thinks it's an outrage that she wasn't fired/sent to jail/etc.
I'm just putting this here because it's just a greater part of what I'm talking about.
People judging situations merely on the basis that his/her action must be wrong without caring at all about the circumstance.
It all just feels like people took the classical beliefs of Liberalism and just took it into a really, weird spin.
