I find this thread really depressing. It's amazing how egotistical most people are when they're being 'honest' to themselves. 30% think they're in the top 2%? That's honestly ridiculous.

I will solve it for you by showing each step.

1. We know there are 7 girls on the bus, so let C equal the constant for amount of legs.
C = 7x
2. We know they all have 7 backpacks each;
7^(2) = 49 total backpacks
3. We are given the information that all backpacks contain 7 big cats each.
A = 7x^(3) = 343x total big cats
4. Time to calculate how many small cats are in the backpacks.
T = 7x^(4) = 2401x total small cats

5. Final step, set your variables and solve for Y(the total number of legs on the bus). This doesn't include the bus driver and assume buses have no legs.

F(x) = C + A + T
C = 7x; the amount of legs for the girls
A = 343x; amount of legs for big cats
T = 2401x; amount of legs of small cats

Replace the variables by substitution and use the values that I set for X. Let's assume that the girls have 2 legs, and all the cats have 4 legs, so replace for the cats; X=4, and the girls; X=2.
Solving time!

F(x) = C + A + T
F(x) = 7x + 343x + 2401x
= 14 + 1372 + 9604
= 10,990

That worked proved that there are 10,990 legs on that bus assuming that bus has no legs and the bus drive is excluded.

No, it does not. You completely misinterpreted what he wrote.

The question should be interpreted as-
7 girls on the bus, each have 7 bags. Each bag contains 7 big cats, and each big cats have 7 small cats attached to them. How many legs are there?

Could it have been better written, maybe. Regardless, you can't really interpret it any other way.

Also: I'm surprised no-one answered the bus question with "zero legs" because cats and girls and such are inside the bus, but I suppose that does require a delibrate misinterpretation of slang English.

I can't remember when exactly I voted on this (over a month ago?) but I tried to answer it honestly. Top 30-40%. I would say I'm somewhat above average intelligence, but I'm not brilliant. And yeah.... I seriously doubt that many people on MTGS are in the 2%.

If I didn't actually know that, I would have guessed lower.

It's really on the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to vital attributes for success in the modern world. Charisma will get you farther in life.

I'm a 16 year-old male who used to be called precocious a lot in childhood, and I get A's and B's in school right now. I while back, I took this poll and placed myself in the top 30/40%.

That that was a pretty gross overestimate. If I could, I'd switch to the top 70/80% range right now. Language is my strong suit, and I sling around a big vocabulary for my age, which got me thinking that my IQ would be something exceptional; but the results from all the internet IQ tests I've taken during the past few days say that it's somewhere between 99 and 128. Self-perception is a funny thing (and so are IQ tests).

I'm inclined towards skepticism about the folks who place themselves at the top of the heap.

In case you're waiting for a response (I don't want to keep you waiting) I don't really know what to say to that. I'm glad you have an opinion.

The problem is that we don't really have much information about the intelligence of Magic players as a whole. I'd say it's probably higher than the normal population, just based on who I know, but that's just a guess. Normal IQ tests are compared against the general population, not this select group.

If you were referring to the "I.Q. is for building shelters and trapping small game", that's in reference to a recent theories being embraced that state the farther back we go in human history, the higher IQ we had, and likewise, as we progress forward, IQ is lowering on the whole.

I know for a fact I'm not very intelligent, outside of a decent grasp of the English language. Some of my lifestyle/relationship choices over the past few years attest to my lack of brains.
