Recently I've been looking into getting a paypal account now that I am on my own in college during the school year for stuff like the very occasional ebay deal since I don't have a credit card to buy stuff with online.
Anyhow I know that you can you can connect a bank account (which I have) to your paypal rather than a credit card. However, does this cause a delay in payment?
I couldn't find anything amongst the official info pages that suggested that this is the case, but my dad seemed to think that paypal didn't really work very well unless linked to a credit card.

There's about a one week delay between when you "pay" with Paypal and when the funds are actually taken from your account. The person/place/thing you're paying will receive the money right away but it won't be reflected in your account for a week or so.
:EDIT: I used to use Paypal back when I didn't have a credit card. Now that I do, I pretty much exclusively use the plastic.
I can verify what iForgot is saying about paypal. I used to use paypal regularly to pay for MTGO. However, it took anywhere between a day and a week for the payment to actually be taken out of my account, and this actually lead to several problems with my bank.
It -is- a good way to do things to keep from spreading your CC number around. Use paypal with people/companies you don't know/trust. But also make sure to keep good track of what you've bought.
The person you're paying gets the payment instantly, like a credit card or debit card. However, the money isn't taken out of your account instantly, unlike a debit card.
As long as you make sure you keep track of all of your transactions you'll be fine. It'll also be good practice for when you get a CC because you should do so then, too.

I don't need to worry about breaking the bank, I am really pretty responsible with money.
