Given the hypothetical situation (the men have no clothing or things to use, and the infinite landscape is TOTALLY empty and plane), I'll vote a high number to assure the human success. Something like three people holding each arm/leg and some others beating the creature chest and belly to death.
Most people overate the power of wild animals. Firstly, a given group of humans is almost assuredly able to find stick and rocks. But even excluding this, the simple and effective strategy would be to gouge out the eyes, a task for which fingers would suffice. Of course in the initial onslaught the bear may be able to maim several, afterwards he is utterly worthless. So I am going to say 5 untrained humans at minimum, if they are sufficiently willful and vicious. Training lowers this number. There are individuals in the world who could kill a bear alone, using only their hands.
That's what I thought too. I'm pretty sure there are tons or better long distance runners than humans. Humans are walkers, not runners.
In a mile race maybe. A horse will run itself to death it wont pace its self. As will any animal.
5 humans bunch up and creep close enough to get the bears attention. They run away the second it starts to chase, if it does manage to get close they start running in opposite directions to confuse the bear and regain the distance. And regroup, and repeat, when it gets exhausted they circle it and harass the bear untill it gets so exhausted it passes out or becomes nearly defenseless.
Suffocation would be the method of dispatching.

No way it could be done. Compared to an unarmed human, a bear is a killing machine. Even if you had enough people to *somehow* overwhelm it, I don't know how they would actually go about killing the poor thing.

See, this is why I included 'lives may be at stake' in my emails to the scientists. I am certain most of them read the email, laughed and/or shook their fist into the heavens, and then deleted it...these people likely did not take it seriously, albeit I presented it as a professional and a gentleman.
No number of truly unarmed men would stand a chance. There's no possible way to inflict any sort of injury without using some combination of weaponry or environment.

The only feasible way is if the people involved were totally irrational and many of them kamikazed their way to the bears eyes, ignoring the pain that would undoubtedly be inflicted upon them through claw and teeth. Even then, the bear has a good a nose as a bloodhound, and would be able to smell you, though just may be disoriented enough to falter somehow.
How did we come to the conclusion that they wouldn't even have the most rudimentary of weapons? I think someone made the argument earlier that humans are naturally inclined to use tools. That makes sense to me.....
It's just part of the hypothetical. With rudimentary weapons, and no fear (as per the hypothetical) it would take 1-3 humans almost definitely. The question was to figure out how many men it would take without the weapons. It's a more interesting question, because yes, humans would always use tools and weapons if this situation happened in real life.
What's ironic is that Wizards made Grizzly Bear a 2/2 vanilla creature.

I know you are half-joking with the Grizzly Bears argument, being only a 2/2 and all, but I think creature P/T scale either doesn't truly exist or is logarithmic or something. Look at Uril, the Miststalker and tell me 2 grizzly bears and 1 eager cadet could kill that thing, if it existed in real life? I think P/T is scaled negatively, so a 2/2 is more than twice as strong as a 1/1.

There is nothing a group of human beings can do to a bear. A single hit from a bear's claws or teeth will incapacitate a human being. You cannot do anything to a bear, its hide is too thick, to the point where bears can survive gunfire. You cannot surround a bear, it will break through your ranks. Unless you have numbers into at least fifty or more men, you will not have a chance against a bear, and even then I fail to see how you'd actually kill it.
I'm not familiar with bear anatomy, but they will have weak spots. If human kicks and punches could do serious damage to these spots (genitals, temples, eyes, throat...), then you could kill a bear.

Hell, even if you have no sticks and stones, you can use the skull of an already fallen comrade after the bear is done with him and feeding on another fallen guy.

I'm thinking maybe 30 or so could do it. Yes, bears are beasts. Yes, they can maul a human being in a single strike. But 30? Assuming this is a 1200 pound bear, and the humans average 180 pounds, they outweigh him by 4200 pounds. Assuming each can lift their body weight, that's 5400 pounds of force they can apply.
I'd say, screw the tactical feint approach. Take advantage of his ability to only kill 1 or 2 at a time, and overwhelm him. I severely doubt that this bear has the strength to kill 30 people before they manage to subdue him. Every animal has weak spots. 20 guys punching, kicking, and clawing a bear in the face WILL do serious damage. I know hits to his midsection are all of useless, but if they can't break any bones of its skull with that much force, then I find it hard to understand how we manage to ever kill the things, short of .50 cal rifles.

To those who say it's impossible, that's not true. Many men can kill the bear. Say a stupidly high number (like 1,000,000 men) and think all of them jump AT THE SAME TIME over the bear: it will just die under the weight (with the most of the men, too).
Now, that you see that IS possible, the question is: what is the smallest number of men you think that can kill a bear? 100? 80? 50? 10? But don't say it's impossible.
Generally, 5 or 6 well trained, well fit human beings around their late 20's would probably be able to wrestle down the bear and restrict it of its movements before taking the final sway to end the beast's life. You should never try this, though. It's not worth it.
