Apparently he was filiming a documentary with his daughter called "Things that could kill you". The barb pierced his heart, killing him instantly
I'm sorry for his loss, but this qoute is truly funny. Dying while filming a movie called "things that could kill you" is just really funny. I can't help but think how ironic this is. Sort of like when people die while doing "don't try this at home" stunts. At least his death can bring humor. Kind of.
We live in a country were ~50% of the populace believe public schooling is a socialist conspiracy and that being called Einstein is an insult. We could try and fix it, but unfortunately the other 50% don't believe in euthanasia.
Yea, it's always really funny when a family loses a husband and father, especially when the kids havent hit double digit ages yet. Good way to put that ApocKid.
It is ironic that he died by stingray and not Croc, that he died filming a movie about things that can make you dead. But if anything, this is the one moment i can't laugh at him. It was funny to see him because he was so unlike so many people. People are outgoing and cheerful, overall passionate about life in general are few and far between these days, as with each generation there is a better sense of the crappy world we live in. Steve Irwin was able to transcend the miserable fog laid on the world.
I regret miserably laughing at how he acted, maybe because i couldnt understand then what he was really all about. We laughed at him because he was funny, but not in the obvious way. We laughed because we couldn't fathom how someone could be so utterly content with a life that didn't seem exceedingly worth living. But we couldn't understand him because he was one of a kind in this world.
He will be missed. RIP for sure. It's sad--a guess a sting ray can even pierce a heart of gold.

The Legendary Storyline Poster--- Ixidorsdreams (yeah, it was me ;))
This was an inevitability, people. The fact that he was being watched by the world, that he had a crew and an audience seemed to make what he did less crazy.
But I think it's telling that he died not at the hands of the animal he knew so well, thought it is considered more dangerous, but was killed by a creature he wasn't as well-trained to interact with.

Goodness makes you unique. And he was one of a kind.

A fair point, although you don't normally have to be trained in any manner to interact with a sting-ray. They're almost always docile and stings are usually the result of someone accidentally stepping on one. In fact, prior to Steve's death there are only two recorded sting ray deaths ever... all have been done in by a stab wound through the heart.
It was a freak accident that no amount of preparation or training could have prevented. A very sad day indeed.
Might I add that, among the infinitely many ironies that this death has brought, one of them was that three days before his death there was a Crocodile Hunter-related tidbit on my The Onion 365-day calendar: "Crocodile Hunter the Same Way in Bed." I saved it, and now I have it posted on my door, with "R.I.P. Steve Irwin" written in the part of the calendar where you can write notes on. You will be missed, Steve.
Tis a sad day in the world, you will be missed

Upon taking up the sleeping habits of Keith Richards (Which involves sleeping upside down like a bat to gain immortality),the only people left after the apocalypse will be Me, Keith, cockroaches, and goths and emo's. Man, its going to be a long eternity.
This is a sad day for two both the environmentalist and entertainment world. He was a great entertainer as well as a great environmentalist, and he will be greatly missed.
You would have thougth he would have died by a Croc Biteing his head off or somthing like that, Then he Gets Killed by a Sting-Ray Stabing him in the heart.
They say he probally Died Instantly, at least it was a painless death.
We will miss you Steve.

Wow, this is a sad day indeed. My old "crocodile stalker" parody mp3s seem rather unfunny now. He actually did die by being attacked by wildlife. Truly sad.

It scares me how much you and I think alike sometimes.
I know sounds awful that I can find humor in the man's death, but don't get me wrong I have the utmost respect for the man. Few people have the guts or the knowledge to do what he did every day, and it was easy to see that he loved doing it.
I believe Steve Irwin is the type of man who would hope that even his death could bring a bit of a smile to the faces of those who's rapt attention his show held.
Rest Well Croc Hunter.

Ow. Imagine that's the last thing you feel before you die- a poisoned barb stabbing you through the chest pumpint its venom into your blood- I feel bad for him. He was a great naturalist and a great entertainer. May he rest in peace.

As I was learning of the story this morning, I was thinking that no one had ever died from a stingray's 'sting', much less imagining that it would have the strnth to pierce all the way through to the heart. This fact about sting ray death almost makes the situation even more sad and unfortunate. Not to put down the other two fellows, but it's just unfortunate when out of 3 incredibly unfortunate fatal attacks of an otherwise not-so violent creature, 1 of them wasn't some Joe Person character who didn't know what he was doing. Steve knew what he was doing, and lord know he had professional on standby in the event of him getting whipped. Sadly, no one could have prepared for it to pierce his heart.
As grim as this may sound, I'd like to think that he died very instantaneously. I can only imagine that not only would the piercing through chest and heart involve serious pain, any conciousness left would be spent feeling the immense burn of the venom traveling through his bloodstream. Thusly, I hope he didn't die after a 5 second stint of possibly the worst pain imaginable.
While I never actually went out of my way to watch Steve Irwin, I'd randomly have either the Discovery Channel or Animal PLanet on and he'd have some sort of show going on. I always enjoyed his enthusiasm and passion for creatures you and I would never get within 20 feet of unless we had a rifle and a protective suit. Also, his appearances on talk shows were always enjoyable.
He will be missed immensly, even by those of us that weren't necessarily dedicated fans, but enjoyed his passion nonetheless. The heart and soul that he poured into his antics will be unrivaled for decades. There will be many who will try to fit his boots [and iconic short shorts], but it'll be many years before anyone can call themselves the 'Croc Hunter' as Steve Irwin was.
My prayers and sympathies go to his family, and especially his wife and two children.
RIP Steve Irwin.
The world will miss you.

Unfortunately it doesn't sound like it was quite instantaneous. The whole death was caught on film. His manager has been in the Australian papers today saying that he's seen the tape - which has been passed onto the police - and apparently, the stingray gets him and he pulls the barb out of his chest before collapsing and dying.
Tragic.
