According to breaking news reports, Steve Irwin was killed by a lethal stingray barb while filming an underwater documentary in Australia.
I've seen it reported on a few Australia-based news sites, but I still wonder if perhaps there was a misunderstanding somewhere along the way. I'll update as things develop.
ETA: I spoke with a friend in Australia and she told me that this is all over the news and that it's only just breaking so details are scarce. So no luck with it being a misunderstanding.
I don't want to sound like an insensitive prick, but I keep laughing because I have the image of him going "BYE CRIKEY AINT SHE A BEAUT" then getting speared through the chest.
Dang... that's pretty crazy... I always thought it'd be a Croc that took him out.

This is sad news indeed. We need more charismatic naturalists to draw the public's attention to a world around them that they might otherwise neglect and disdain. He did a good job, even when he was controversial, and he will be sorely missed.
All in all, though, there are worse ways for a man such as he to go.

Then loom'd his streaming majesty From out that wine-dark fog, And spake he unto all our crew: "Go forth, and read my blog."
While netdecking and testing VileHorror i thought about Biorhythm. Sure its really expensive, off-color and crappy but still you're always the one with creatures while playing VH. That made me think.
according to his page on wikipedia...they are stating that the stingray barb pierced his heart
today i was watching mythbusters where they were trying to confirm or bust the myth of a man dying because he heated up a lava lamp on a stove and it exploded causing a shard of glass to pierce his heart
(they confirmed it btw)
its really sad that he passed away, but he died doing what he loved...educating people about animals. (he was in the process of filming a documentary). sting rays are part of the same family of animals that sharks and skates are.
its sad when your favorite type of animal kills a celebrity
He did stupid things, and made himself famous by i guess...being crazy. I enjoyed laughing at what some of the stuff he did...but we all knew that one day he would go a bit too far...it is pretty sad though. RIP man... RIP..,

Yeah, I heard about this a couple of hours ago. Truely sad news... I was always a big fan of Steve Irwin, mainly because he was so enthusiastic about what he did and his love for animals. I, too, find it kind of ironic that he spent alot of time screwing around with crocs and a stingray did him in.
In Australia he was always in the news for the stupid stuff he'd get up to. A lot of us thought he was a complete nutjob, but ultimately, he had a passion for what he did and was simply misguided at times. To lose him at such a young age is incredibly sad.
Apparently he was filiming a documentary with his daughter called "Things that could kill you". The barb pierced his heart, killing him instantly, so they say. They tried to resuscitate him, but they couldn't.
WOW....i am really shocked and sad that he passed away. But you have to understand that it comes with his line of work. At least he was doing something that he loved to do.

I too thought that he'd die of natural causes in his 80's, still fighting croc's ;).... he definitely was a good man and he did do a lot of good.
Celebrating 3 years of open-minded acceptance, indispensable help, great advice, and incalculably-creative deck-design... Thanks for all the magic!

R.I.P. Steve Irwin. You shall be missed.
Windmills do not work that way!
goodbye steve, we'll miss you.
Crikey!
Still, I'm going to miss him.

Agreed. He was a great TV personality, and all-around, he was in the least, a lover of nature and a nice guy. He will truly be missed and may he RIP.
My prayers go to his wife and family, as well.
Unfortunately, that made me laugh. And this is totally not funny...
Thou will be sorely missed carer of the wild animal. RIP
