Here in Japan, a Macintosh is a rare beast cultivated by MA-KU Otaku (Mac Geeks). They have secret hand shakes and séances on the weekends. The other 99.9% of the education and business world use PCs. So that is all I have been using for the past 8 years. When I came to Japan I brought my Mac laptop, and old old powerbook 190cs. And yeah, it loads faster, and runs graphics programs, wordprocessing, database, and spreadsheet programs better than my present Gateway running Windows XP. Macs are superior in many respects. So was Beta over VHS. Like everyone says, and really the end of all Mac/PC debate... It is a matter of, "Is it worth the trouble, to have a better system and have to deal with the incompatibilty of what evereyone else is using." That and the factor, of knowing your way around a system. Since I have been using the inferior PC, I have gotton pretty familiar with its ins and outs. I just played around with a Mac at the computer store a few months ago, and I have to say, I was lost.
The upside of using a rare beast, like Opera for a web browser, or a Mac for a computer, is that the payoff of building viruses, spyware for those babies is not that great.
I guarantee, if 75% of the world were using Macs, Steve Jobs would be Satan, Bill Gates would be the Holy Avenger, and we would be raving about how virus free that obscure browser Explorer is. . . (Assuming in my alternate universe that MS products are actually good, opposed to just having amazing marketing, and ruthless business practices.)
Anyway on Topic. Thanks everyone for the good advice. Actually, reinstalling windows once every few months sounds like the most creative anti-spyware methods. I think I will , atleast use a non IE browser on my new machine... But I also think I will run Anti-virus software.. I am still debating in my mind on which one to use. I was impressed with Search and Destroy and Ad-aware, I think I will bring them aboard. Finally, I will try and get a good picture of what my system looks like "Clean" and keep an eye out for suspicious programs on my machine.
There is a nasty piece of malware in the form of a folder located in my C drive called Netmeeting. Ad-aware and search&destroy are not able to help me get rid of it. Upon deletion, those files respawn in the folder again. The folder itself cannot be deleted.
Can someone tell me how to remove this nuisance? Any programs perhaps that I can use to rid my computer of this scum?

I've been having trouble with my computer as well. It runs pretty clowly, and I've been trying to get my parents to upgrade to DSL. We still have a Dial-up connection. Our computers had a lot of trouble in the past, and we even have trouble with the Anit-spyware/virus programs. We tried download the Norton 2006 and it stopped with an error 3/4 of the way though. We downloaded Winantivirus Pro 2006 and McAffe as well. The McAffe is old, so I'm pretty sure it isn't doing anythig and the computer wont let me delete the Norton off of it. I'm not sure if the Winantivirus Pro is doing anything, but it blocks pop-ups well enough. The pop ups that told us to get the Winantivirus Pro said we had the Blackworm virus and some sort of Trojan horse on our computer. Well that's my whole story.

My theory: The spyware blocker companies hire free-lance hackers privately to make the viruses and malicious spyware. Then they release it onto the internet and update their protection to stop most, but not all of them. This ensures a continuous supply of customers. Honestly if I owned an anti-virus company, I'd do it.
Help has come in the form of a bit of basic algebra. I feel that it'll shed some light on your problem here.
Basically:
S + T = W
...S in this case stands for 'spam' and the T stands for 'light trolling'. And the W? That stands for 'Warning'. I love math. -- {mikeyG}

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):

And if you don't want to erase your hard disk and install a different operating system, what then, smarty pants?
To be honest, the best way to get rid of persistant stuff like that is to reformat.

Exactly 20 (21?) Macs have gotten viruses on OS X. Everyone who got it had the unfortunate stupidity to download the virus, unzip it, and enter their password as permission for installing it onto their computer.
So I'm not really worried. Macs aren't just safe because they are obscure. It's actually insanely hard to get a virus to work on one.
Besides, if you are that paranoid, antivirus is available. It's probably a waste of money, though.
Anyhoo, that's a bit offtopic. Back when I primarily used XP on a PC, my best strategy was having no important information on my computer in the first place, except for what could be easily backed up on flash drives. Not the most technical approach, but effective. I also installed those updates that XP prompted me about. I'm not sure if they actually helped :/
I got a virus before I ever installed antivirus software on my mac. Not quite sure how it got there.
However, there's something about what you're saying that makes me wonder. You mention that 21 Macs, at most, have ever been infected. How would one know? As far as I can tell, most people who own macs don't have antivirus. How then could that count ever be accurate?

There was a virus a while ago that has since gotten a security fix that infected a vary small number of computers. I heard 20, but I can't verify, so Google I guess. Also, I said Macs with OS X. If you are running OS 9 or earlier, the count doesn't really apply, since it's not nearly as secure.
If you do have OS X, and you got a virus, you might want to report that.

Presumably, that number would be "confirmed reports".
Incidently, what virus did you get on your Mac?

Alright, so I accidentally installed some spyware to my comp while I was looking for something online. It just keeps opening extra tabs in Firefox and it is driving me insane. Can someone please advise me on how to get rid of it all?
I tried using Spybot earlier. Not only did it not remove the spyware, but, it DID delete some files that were apparently necessary for my internet to work, and it took me hours to repair this problem. So if you suggest Spybot S&D, please tell me what files not to delete to avoid this happening again.
Details? I mean, if you were able to repair the problems S&D supposedly caused, then you should know what files not to delete, right? Are you sure that the files removed were not malware so ingrained in your computer that you didn't know it was malware? And how exactly did you go about repairing the problem?

FYI, Norton has NEVER found a virus on my computer... while Adaware gets rid of anywhere from 3 to 200 everytime (depends on how long i wait between runs, i have the free version). In fact, i haven't renewed Norton...and it's been bugging me to resubscribe for months. But screw it... it still tries to stop emails... so I don't care.
Also, I broke IE once... I tried to reinstall it, but i couldn't, so i just got Mozilla (warez). A few months later it fixed itself *shrug*. It was fun to talk to my friends and say "I broke the internet" :P.

I don't know. This was around September of last year, and I don't think the history on my antivirus goes back that far.
