I disagree wholeheartedly. In my life, I have been bitten by a half-dozen or so of the thousand or so dogs that I have petted. They have been either my dogs or by one of two breeds: Scotties or schnauzers. They are not especially good with children, either. I don't personally think that they are cute, but that is a personal thing. They are bright and energetic, but they are also cranky.
There is a difference between a standard schnauzer and a minature schnauzer of about 20 pounds, but if your are looking for infor regarding them here is a good link.
"They're devoted, good with kids, and do not shed." is a quote. Harakis, I would guess if a mini-Schnauzer bit you it was not so much a problem with the bread, as it was with the dog/owner/situation. While, I can not speak for every Schnauzer out there, there is some concern about biting with mini-Schnauzers. Mini Schnauzers, use their mouths. My Schnauzer will open his mouth and grab your foot or hand, while you are playing with him, but he does not apply pressure in any way that could be considered a bite.
However that said, if threatened a Scnauzer will bite. They are pretty protective dogs. However, most dogs will bite if threatened, but "Schnauzer" means 'snout' or 'mouth', there is a reason they have that name. They are sniffing, rat hunting diggers.
Schnauzers are great dogs in many ways, but yeah, also know what kind of temperment you want. If you want a more mellow dog. Get a toy poodle. (but please don't give it an embarrassing haircut.) My parents have had two male toy poodles. And whenever a dog barber puts a little ribbon in those guys hair, I can almost see the humiliation. They are cooler dogs than their image gives them credit for.
You just described, TO A TEE, my dog. She is adorable, small, energetic, and has nice curly hair (that doesn't shed! Extra bonus). Her breed is not very common, but it's called Havanese. Here are some pics.
They're great dogs, and they're kind of like half-purebreds. They are a breed, but it's a relatively new one with ancestry from poodle, maltese, and bichon.
Some of the breeds here I have seen a lot of problems with. Jack Russels and Shelties can be VERY loud and yappy. In fact I would say if your Sheltie does not bark all the time, you got lucky. I know people who have had problems with mini schnauzers being aggressive, though that's rarer, especially if you get a female. But Havanese have the sweetest temperament of any dog I've ever seen, and I've had a Golden Retriever.
Harkius, I can't argue with your experience, as I have no idea about the situation. Sounds unfortunate none the less. Sorry for misspelling you name once. I have trouble with magic-esque names... I generally aim for the correct first and last letters... but often forget whats in the middle. Most folks figure it out, as you can see I can't even get my own name ericku right.
