yeah, i dont know exactly how large is large, so i'd have to answer with some kind of spaniel (my friend has a Brittany Spaniel, and he's a cool dog). if youre looking for a larger-medium type dog, you can't go wrong with a black lab.
good luck

Word, definitely true. Raid's the air-to-ground missile. Boiling water's the hydrogren bomb.
My advice is to stay away from purebreds, and instead, go to the pound and pick a small sized mutt. I've had about seven dogs in my lifetime and small mutts have been great in comparison to the purebreds.

Spiral nailed it, Beagles are amazing dogs and so fun to hang with. Belgareth made a good call too, English Springers are one of the sweetest dogs. Blue Heelers are really cool dogs too, especially if you want a frisbee catching dog. Spic9h has a good point too, people have inbred dogs far too long and you get major karmic points for giving a animal shelter mutt a good home. Read up on the breeds too, that'll help in your final decision.

Bingo. Whatever you get, get a mutt. They always seem to have all the benefits of a purebred with none of the liabilities (especially when it comes to health). Plus they are abundant and cheaper (often free) than purebreds. Any animal shelter should have several mutts to choose from.
Personally, I avoid small dogs, I'm a big dog kinda guy. Though my friend has a dog and he looks a lot like a rottie but half the size and a fair bit more timid. I'm not sure exactly what the mix was, but he's a great dog. If money isn't an option, go trendy and get the latest popular mutt hybrid: the puggle. Part pug, part beagle. One of the few small dogs I'd ever get. Though I won't since they're expensive and hard to find.
My suggestion is just to check out any local shelters and see if any dog catches your eye.
I have a basset hound/beagle mix, which is mostly basset-looking. She's a great dog, but she's a fraid of cameras, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to dig up pictures or not.
I'd say Dachshund, which I had one of for a long time. They live a long times, and in my experience, they can be very kindred spirits. Some bark a lot, but the one I had up until recently(he died at 19 years old) was a nice dog with very human characteristics. Also, Beagles are pretty intense. I like them a lot too, but I prefer the Hund.

- Must NOT be big, only small (lol big dogs would strangle me to death)
- Has to have hair (no chihuahuas please)
- Is cute
That's about it. So, any recommendations?
You might also like to include your price range...
If money is not a big problem, then I suggest a Minature Schnauzer. Cuteness off the charts, super-loyal, moderately bright, energetic. Good with kids/people. Only trouble I have with mine, is he was not raised with other dogs, so he just goes bonkers when he meets another dog.
If you do not want to pay a lot, then I just suggest you go to your local dog pound, look for the cutest dog there, and take it home. You will be making one animal's life that much happier (or in many cases you will be making that dog's life.)
Personally, I would go with a pitt bull. My family and I have owned 3 throughout my life, and they aren't evil aggressive, life threatening creatures like everyone says they are. In all honesty, they are quite friendly. They also aren't very big. Well, I don't know what you consider big. Our biggest one is like 45-50 pounds. To me, that isn't very big. She stands just short of my knee, and I'm 5'8, so take that however you want.
If you want some kind of ankle biter dog, than I suggest a Jack Russel. They have like unlimited energy, and can be kind of annoying, but they are still pretty good dogs. My girlfriend has one, and she loves it.
If price isn't a problem, I suggest Pugs.
They love attention, have alot of energy, but only really need to be walked once or so a day, and the walk can be only 5-10 minutes long.
They are bright, I have a pug, just under a year old, and already able to walk her without a leash.
Pugs can take care of themselves,
I have no pics right now, but pugs are those dogs that are so ugly, they are adorable. Good luck with the pup.
2) No shipping to countries outside of the US, though I will ship to countries inside of the US (like Africa; it's a little known fact that's actually a country and is inside the US).
- Let me guess, Europe is a country and it's inside the U.S. too /moronity
I would go with a Welsh Corgi. They are cute as hell, they are usually fairly calm, and they are super good with children from what I have seen.
Oh yeah! I forgot Corgis. Those things are awesome. My friend has one, and it is just one of the sweetest things I've ever seen. They also fit well with size restrictions, and as far as I know, they bark less than most of those listed here. Plus, they get bonus points for being in Cowboy Bebop. Add Corgi to my list of reccomendations.

Jack Russels are SO cute. I don't have one, but I know some people who do. They have hair ^_^, are cute, and fairly small.
I have a greyhound/German shepherd (or Alsatian if you wish), she's rather big but she's possibly THE cutest dog in the world. I'll try and post a pic later.

My friend has this lassie type dog and its so cute, it comes up to you and it just begs to get attention. Lassie types seem to know more about the environment than humans too...there was one time, the dog started barking at the door for no reason, so I checked it out. Nothing. But the dog just kept barking, and so my friend decides to check it out and there's this guy trying to steal his car. Of course we phoned the police first. But point being, the dog is not only cute, it has one heck of a nose. Id recommend it.
Id also recommed the german sheperd. Its strong, honest, and true. They are just obediant and well disciplined (if taught of course).
Truthfully, Id take both, I cant have a split between these 2 types of dogs...
hanks for the recommendations guys, if you can get pics post them here, I'd like to see them.
Also, another question: Should I get a male or a female? Just want to hear your thoughts.
Depends...I've had three female dogs and two male dogs over my life, and in my experience, the female ones have been quieter and more prone to just sitting and laying down next to you. Which isn't to say that they don't have energy as puppies, because that would be unnatural My male dogs have always needed to be broken down so that they aren't overly aggressive, and sometimes it's annoying to do, but they've also been playful and protective. All of my dogs have been spayed or nuetered, so I don't have any experience with that part of a dog's life.

Oh, and for the gender discussion... I´d prefer a male dog... Scientific studies show they don´t give birth to even half as many puppies as females do... Go figure...
Well, neither do females if you get them spayed.
Personally, I'm a fan of females. I enjoy that they aren't as aggressive and are more docile. And I'm talking about dogs here, not humans. Definately not the crazy-ass human females I know.
And Harkius, a lot of the problems with pugs come from three main issues. They're purebreds for one, which tends to make certain afflictions more common as the bloodlines remain concentrated. Pugs' breathing issues and eye problems are largely in part to their facial structures (with hybridizing minimizes to a certain extent). And pugs have even more breathing problems when they get fat (obesity is an issue with that breed) since they aren't typically active on their own.
All three issues are dealt with if you get a pug-hybrid (something I'm a fan of) such as the puggle (which I've been researching since I'm also in the market for a new dog).
Golden Retrievers are great. I have one (a Golden Retriever/Great Pyrenees mix), and he's a pretty good dog. Just don't get a Great Pyrenees because they can be very obstinate.

Weinerdogs - i love them, they are so cute.
Beagles - i love the long ears and the sorrow faces.
Jack Russles - way to hyper, but awesome dogs.
Then in a close 4th:
Pugs - they are so ugly they are cute.
