Pretty surprised/amazed that MTGS literally doesn't have any games firing, might be the only time I've seen this happen in my 8+ year long career
I mean, not to sound resigned to our fate, but I pretty much predicted this when the site closure almost happened and Nexus split from us.
The site's overall user base is fractured and, well, I don't have direct access to analytics but I can't imagine traffic here is increasing. The last few games only fired because Osie brought some Colosseum folks and I recruited from MU lol.
We simply do not have the active player base to fire games; even discord activity has noticeably decreased in the last few months.
What that means for us as a community is up in the air; we could try to pull it back from the brink with some kind of massive recruiting effort but I'm not sure where we would find a player pool to draw from. I interacted with a lot of players from a lot of communities during the MU Championship spec chat and the general consensus is that our phases are too long for them to want to play with us. (The #2 complaint was the forum software.)
I, uh, I'm looking for ideas I guess. I don't want to just give up but if we don't do something soon the community is going to disappear. I'd rather attempt a migration than let that happen, being honest.
I'm not much of leader or a bringer-together-of-people, I've mainly just been doing my best to hold things together. I don't know where to go from here but doing -nothing- as we've been doing isn't really an option any longer.
It sounds like some games need to be designed/run that try to wedge the gap on day phase length.
Not that I play a lot anyway, but I personally wouldn't play in a game with 24 or 48 hour day phases because I just don't have the time to put in the effort needed. Not to mention that inactivity and replace-outs have been an issue that have plagued MTGS for years, long before the community dwindled.
But maybe some games can be run that have day phases that take 3-5 RL days.

Discord activity decreases because games take forever to start here. And it's probable that the more they do, then the less often people check the forum or Discord, and we run into a vicious cycle.

What we need to keep the community going is easy to say but not as easy to do. We need actual new blood. Not (only) players invited from other communities. These players can help fill up games (see: over half the playerbase in Voldemort), but if they don't stay and don't get involved with our community, then all they do is artifically inflate our ranks.
The MTGS Mafia community started small then grew thanks to people coming from the rest of the site, trying a game out of curiosity / boredom / already knowing Mafia and perhaps staying. Since MTGS is dying and most subforums are deserted, the natural influx of newcomers has stopped and instead nearly all the "new" players are "mercenaries" from other places.
If you remove these mercenaries, you are left with a dwindling "old guard" increasingly made of people who only play occasionally and at a slow pace. Eventually enough of the old guard will have moved on that the community won't be able to function with or without outside players. There's no point for them to come here if they can run the exact same games with the exact same people in their original communities. We have already reached the point where we badly need outside players just to run a small game.
Things will not get better with time. Fiddling with deadlines will have absolutely no long term effect. I have seen that movie already. It has a sad ending.

Forgive me for using this as thread as a ground, but perhaps when we though the closure was happening, maybe reconsider Thingy's offer to function on MU? I don't know if it is even still active, but several other older sites I know at the time were on MU, and still function to an extent. You would also have the benefit of having more people, while still running in the "slow que" for those of us who would not want to go the normal fast paces action that is MU.
Well, if this is going to be the last game ever played here, maybe I should play

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.

Doesn't surprise me THAT much.
BUT WHO WAS GAME?

But it still means we need to find people to come and play.
