The Resistance isn’t really Mafia, but it shares many similarities. Here are the rules for playing The Resistance (shamelessly retro-fitted from Iso’s Avalon Mafia with inspiration from elsewhere):
There are 7 players divided into 2 factions. 4 Rebels and 3 Spies.
The Rebels know nothing; The Spies know the identities of their teammates, but do not have a private chat.
(1) There are no Day/Night phases. There is also no lynch or night kill. Instead, there are 5 Mission Phases.
(2) At the beginning of a Mission Phase, a player will be selected to be the Mission Leader. Whenever a Mission Phase is completed, or a Mission Team (see Paragraph 3) is rejected, the player in the player list directly after the previous Mission Leader will become the new Mission Leader. The first Mission Leader of the game will be the player at the top of the player list (player list will be shuffled before the game begins in the interest of fairness).
(3) After discussion, the Mission Leader will propose a Mission Team by making a post that contains "Proposal (Mission number).(Proposal number): Player 1, Player 2, etc." on its own, separate line. Bright colors are preferred but not required. The Mission Leader is permitted to put themselves on the Mission Team.
(3.1) The number of players on the Mission Team depends on the mission number. Mission 1 requires 2 players, Missions 2 and 3 require 3 players, and Missions 4 and 5 require 4 players.
(4) Each player votes on the proposed team via PM to the game host only. Votes for or against a Mission Team may be changed any number of times simply by PMing the host again until the deadline; at the deadline, all votes will be revealed simultaneously and the team will be confirmed or denied. Revealed information includes the name of each player and whether they voted to accept the team or reject it. Failure to vote will result in reduced majority requirements for that vote (and also an inactivity prod regardless of prior posting).
(5) If the team earns a majority of assenting votes, that team is confirmed and attempts the mission; otherwise, that team is rejected and the next player sequentially becomes the new Mission Leader (see Paragraph 2). The fifth Mission Team proposed for each mission will be automatically confirmed.
(6) When a Mission Team becomes confirmed, each member of the Mission Team will submit "Pass" or "Fail" to the game host via PM only. If all of the submissions are "Pass", the Mission will succeed. If 1 or more of the submissions is "Fail", the Mission will fail except for Mission 4, which will require two "Fails" to actually fail. In other words, the Fails required to fail will be 1/1/1/2/1. Failure to submit a "Pass" or "Fail" will be counted as a "Pass." At the end of each mission, the number of pass and fail votes is revealed but the names attached to those votes are not.
(7) The Rebels win if 3 Missions pass; the Spies win if 3 Missions fail.
Phase timers are still up in the air; please reply to your role PM with a preference.
Advance warning: phase timers may be significantly affected from July 8th to July 15th because I'll be out of town. If you're interested in comodding let me know, the set up is really easy and you don't even need to take vote counts.
And of course, if the game rules aren't quite clear, feel free to PM me here or message me on Discord. Do /not/ ask me non-deadline related questions in the game thread, I will not answer them.
0: I am the game host, which means I am the final arbiter of role interactions and game rule infringements. I will never lie or intentionally mislead you. If you have a problem with a ruling I make please shelve it until post game. To the best of my and my reviewer(s)’ knowledge this is not a bastard game.
1: Mafia is a game, we’re here to have fun. Please be respectful of your fellow players. Sometimes emotions run high and we get caught up in the moment. That is not an excuse for flaming or poor sportsmanship.
2: When generating (or faking, as applicable) reads, please do not use angleshooting or out of game knowledge to the best of your ability. This means do not use the timing, reasons, or order of substitutions and modkills to influence others, do not use the timing or phrasing of role PMs to influence others, do not make alignment bets with out of game consequences, and do not use “trust tells” or similar. This list is not exhaustive.
3: If you have a question about your role or a rules interaction, please PM me or message me on Discord. I will not answer questions posed to me in the game thread other than questions about vote counts or deadlines. If you raise a question that needs addressing to the entire game (regarding a special rule or similar) I will anonymize your question and announce the answer.
4: Do not talk about this game outside of this thread and quicktopic links or PMs given to you in your role PM or approved by me. Please ensure I am copied on PMs sent to other players. This is a modkillable offense.
5: No funny business. Do not use invisible text, cryptography, tiny writing, hidden messages, acronym/alphabet claims, or similar. This is a modkillable offense.
6: Do not directly quote your role PM or any private communications (QuickTopics, etc.) when posting in the main game thread. This includes mason chats and scum chats. Please paraphrase - if you are in doubt, ask me before posting! This is a modkillable offense.
7: Do not edit, delete, or thank posts. Even if it’s an accidental double post. This is a modkillable offense.
8: Please post content at least once every 24 hours. Content is, of course, subjective, but “Posting to avoid prod,” “catching up,” or similar short not-really-game-related posts are obviously not content. If you need to be absent for an extended period of time please post “V/LA until [Date]” in bold on its own line in the thread so that I and the other players know when you’ll be back. You do not need to explain your reasons for being absent in thread. If you will be gone for more than four or five days you should consider requesting replacement.
9: You are responsible for following all forum and subforum rules and guidelines. Forum-wide rules are available here, and our subforum specific Mafia rules are in the Mafia Hosting Sign-Ups & Hosting Rules thread (spoilered here for convenience):
-Game Limit-
Players may participate in only three games at any given time. An exception to this rule can be made by moderators in need of a replacement for a game, if no other replacement can be found.
-Suicide-
If you no longer wish to participate in a game for any reason, contact the moderator. Do NOT attempt to force the moderator to modkill you.
-Current Game Discussion-
A player in an ongoing game may not discuss that game with any other player in that game, or in public forums. Also, it is a good idea to ask permission before discussing the game with anyone outside the game, because they can no longer replace into the game once any meaningful discussion takes place.
-Cryptoclaims-
Unless explicitly authorized by the game moderator in their opening rules section, cryptoclaims are forbidden.
-Out-of-game Promises-
Players may not use out-of-game promises (example: I swear on my grandmother's life, I bet you my entire collection of magic cards, etc.) in an effort to influence other players.
-Multiple Players On One Account-
"Hydra" accounts - multiple people playing and posting as one player with shared access to the "gimmick" account, are not allowed unless they have prior approval from the specific game Moderator. Please do not do this on your own.
-Traitor/Alignment Switching Roles-
Game moderators are strongly encouraged to be extraordinarily careful if they seek to include a traitor role in their designs. These roles are notorious for causing games to implode, for creating fairness concerns, and for the challenge they pose to the town's behavioral analysis. (See Discussion in Council Thread, Post 3351, onwards.)
Please note that bold red text is permitted by non-moderators in this subforum for town/scum lists, game host actions, and similar. Just don’t use it excessively.
TL;DR: Be excellent to each other, post something substantial every 24 hours, ask me questions in private when possible, don’t edit or delete posts unless your role explicitly allows it, no funny business involving cryptography, etc. and... have fun, that’s the whole point. Deadlines:
Each mission will contain a 72 hour discussion phase, during which the Mission Leader selects a Mission team. This phase will be followed by a 24 hour private voting phase, during which all players will vote to accept or reject the mission team. If the mission team is accepted, they will have 24 hours to vote to pass or fail the mission.
I will post a reminder of the deadline with a link to the countdown timer every day, as close to midnight EST as I can manage.
Prods for inactivity will be processed at the time I post the deadline reminder. Role PMs have been sent.
Please read your role PM and reply to it to /confirm, including whether you prefer 72 hours for discussion with 24 hour prods or 96 hours for discussion with 48 hour prods, or have no preference. The game will begin once all players have /confirmed.
All players have /confirmed. Phases will be 72 hours for discussion, 24 hours to accept or reject teams, and 24 hours for mission teams to vote, with 24 hour prods.
All players have /confirmed. Phases will be 72 hours for discussion, 24 hours to accept or reject teams, and 24 hours for mission teams to vote, with 24 hour prods.
I'm also currently scumreading both Osie and Vaimes for their above posts. But I bet that's just because it's Osie and Vaimes and the game just started.
KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.

@Silver: Maybe a mass message to all the players letting them know the game has started would be a good idea. especially given the short deadlines.
”Hey Silver, please tell my spy buddies to get in here so we can squeeze ourselves into the towncircle.”
/s
Holding off the temptation for townreading your enthusiasm.
The first mission almost always passes, so there’s no real info to be gained by campaigning for specific people to go on this mission. Spies usually want to hold off on going 1v1 with a Rebel so early, since they’re less likely to end up on future missions.
It’s a lot easier to get reads IRL because facial expressions, body language, but I dunno what we can really learn here in the first phase.

Let the opinions flow.
Agree about the first mission. The choice will potentially tell us the most about the mission leader probably (his thought process in choosing the team) than the participants.
I also read people better IRL. This will be an interesting challenge.

@KJ have played exactly zero but did a deep dive into the mechanics of it during avalon on here. Find it fascinating.
And yeah I'd still try to put someone I think is a rebel on it. I'm not going to put a suspected spy just because they'll probably vote suceed just to avoid a 1 for 1. That doesn't accomplish anything.
Interaction analysis won't be the most helpful but I think wagons still could be ver useful. As much from the wagonomics of nominations as from the yes/no vote to parties.

I don't personally think it matters TOO much since that mission passes 90% of the time. I actually usually don't put myself in anymore. Usually gets me a lot of flak but that's what I like. I like to see how people react to that.

resistance is not a game for the faint of heart or for the weak
play hard and shoot angles
completely different from mafia imo
so basically here's how it's gonna work. Spies can't afford to fail a mission on day 1 because the mission leader then knows the identity of one of the spies. The mission requiring two fails is also typically going to pass. Which means spies also can't afford to pass any of the other three missions. This is the most generic path spies take- while it's an option for them to switch things up, it's probably gonna end up screwing them over.
So literally it doesn't matter who we send today as it will always pass. THIS PHASE SHOULD ONLY BE 24 HOURS
that was in reference to last game where I was more or less saying "if we were town together I would be next to you in post count"
this probably looks weak but I think grape is resistance, cause honestly reading mechanics isn't really replacement for actually playing it. I think that's the reason he's sounding kind of weird, not because he's a spy

+town for KJ
Good way to get info out of what is almost always a formality-type mission.
One thing my group tended to do to newbies was ask what color their card was.
I was gonna ask Mikey to explain but I get it now.
Also this is cruel.
We do it to make sure they were listening to the rules, where it's clearly explained that color = alignment. And if a spy actually claims, we just laugh and start over.
vezokpiraka is the mission leader and has until 23:59 Eastern on July 3rd to select a mission team (approximately 68.5 hours from the time of this post).
The phase will end after a mission team is selected or at the deadline, whichever comes first.
You may vote as soon as a team is selected, but the 24 hour voting deadline will not begin until I announce the phase change.
Please contact me via PM or Discord DM if you have further questions.

Well then your group is much nicer than mine. That's how some of my friends play seriously.
I'm currently soft rebel reading vezok, soft spy reading grape.
Hey Vaimes, do you see what I see with these two?
Oh? No longer scumreading me?
I see Some things.
I'm not like. actually scumreading you. It's just that early game Vaimes is scummy until he's suddenly not.If you're town, you'll spew it. This happened in Friends And Enemies and... Mistborn? too I think.
Like. "your response to Mikey here of "How do you do fellow rebels?" isn't like a thought process, it's a fake news-esque headline that paints a picture. You made the point, you just made it in a scummy way.

@KJ because we have almost no information in the second group and spies will always vote to fail it so leaving yourself off gives you maximum information to you. Plus with how little information town has it's unlikely to pass anyway.
Mikey feels a little IIoAy early but given his pregame stance that D1 should be turbo speed it's probably NAI.
I think I played this game IRL once at a boardgames night maybe? I play a lot of Coup, but not The Resistance. I think there were actual power cards in the resistance game I played?
Totally ambivalent to who goes first. Vezok, do your thing and go with your gut.

Ohhh meant to reply to this earlier. While it won't be public people are still going to have to be somewhat open about their votes. Rebels will own their no votes most of the time and working the PoE will help us find who the no votes are. In a game this size people on missions will almost always be voting yes to them and while it won't be complete we will have some voting data to work with.
Also this says my initial thought was right and votes are revealed publicly. So we will have wagonnomics to work with.
If two or more spies somehow end up on a mission together and they don't want to reveal the existence of multiple spies, the first spy to the left of the mission leader will be the one to fail it.
ugh I keep wanting to reply to things but MTGS is being dumb
literally vezok should just put himself and anyone he thinks is a spy on the mission. In the off chance a spy fails it, we get a soft confirmation of one of the spies.
I have no idea what killjoy was asking me.
Also, vaimes, you definitely shouldn't have said that in the thread. It looks like you're a spy trying to communicate to your team.

Do /not/ ask me non-deadline related questions in the game thread, I will not answer them.

.
It is pregame. Please do not post.
It is now Discussion phase 1.1.
vezokpiraka is the mission leader and has until 23:59 Eastern on July 3rd to select a mission team.
You may begin posting.

{color=blue]I'm Merlin.[/color] Send me on miss--- Oh, wait, this is Resistance, not Avalon.
Stupid broken tags.
This should be fun.
I'm also currently scumreading both Osie and Vaimes for their above posts. But I bet that's just because it's Osie and Vaimes and the game just started.
Ok lets start off with: Who's played Resistance before? I'll go check Avalon after I post here but lets start with that.
@Silver: Maybe a mass message to all the players letting them know the game has started would be a good idea. especially given the short deadlines.

I also read people better IRL. This will be an interesting challenge.
What should I base my team on? It doesn't really matter who I pick cause only bad spies will fail this mission.
My thoughts by now are that I should put myself on the team. Anyone have any objections to this and if so why?
Thanks to DNC at Heroes of the plane studios for this awesome sig and SGT_Chubbz for the awesome avy.

As for how to find rebels I'd treat it just like a normal D1 in a mafia game.
And speaking of with us in equivalent to RVS stage I have a soft rebel read on KJ.
Why are you putting yourself in the team specifically?
Do agree with the D1 Mafia thing. Most behavior tells will carry over. Interaction and wagonomics maybe not so much?
And yeah I'd still try to put someone I think is a rebel on it. I'm not going to put a suspected spy just because they'll probably vote suceed just to avoid a 1 for 1. That doesn't accomplish anything.
Interaction analysis won't be the most helpful but I think wagons still could be ver useful. As much from the wagonomics of nominations as from the yes/no vote to parties.
Cause I'm a rebel and only know my alignment. It makes sense to put myself on the team.

Just Avalon Mafia. Oh and I hosted Avalon in Live with a bunch of different sizes.
This is generally true. Not sure if the game has a built-in element for this or not
What kind of wagons? There's no lynch-voting. And votes for missions are private, just totals are revealed.
What element are you referring to in 22?
wait, who here's a spy?
Also this is cruel.
Hey Vaimes, do you see what I see with these two?
play hard and shoot angles
completely different from mafia imo
so basically here's how it's gonna work.
I will approve any mission team as well
putting yourself on the team is like voting for self pres.
Automatic self-inclusion.
Mine is blue.
Scumleans:
Mikey
(I'm just joking. Haven't seen enough posts yet. Eventually there'll be that dream game where I can try to solve before post 50.)
this probably looks weak but I think grape is resistance, cause honestly reading mechanics isn't really replacement for actually playing it. I think that's the reason he's sounding kind of weird, not because he's a spy
Good way to get info out of what is almost always a formality-type mission. We do it to make sure they were listening to the rules, where it's clearly explained that color = alignment. And if a spy actually claims, we just laugh and start over. Oh? No longer scumreading me?
I see Some things. "How do you do, fellow rebels?"
Bad townread on Grapefruit.
I should go to bed maybe
vezokpiraka is the mission leader and has until 23:59 Eastern on July 3rd to select a mission team (approximately 68.5 hours from the time of this post).
The phase will end after a mission team is selected or at the deadline, whichever comes first.
You may vote as soon as a team is selected, but the 24 hour voting deadline will not begin until I announce the phase change.
Please contact me via PM or Discord DM if you have further questions.
Grape/Osie: First person to tell me why a rebel might do this gets a cookie.
Well then your group is much nicer than mine. That's how some of my friends play seriously.
But that's apperently just you.
Anyway, should I propose the mission quickly or wait for another day.
Thanks to DNC at Heroes of the plane studios for this awesome sig and SGT_Chubbz for the awesome avy.

Also this says my initial thought was right and votes are revealed publicly. So we will have wagonnomics to work with.
If two or more spies somehow end up on a mission together and they don't want to reveal the existence of multiple spies, the first spy to the left of the mission leader will be the one to fail it.
