Each Night, you may either elect to Default, which grants you 1 BP, take a regular night action, which costs you 1 BP, or take additional night actions, which costs you 1 additional BP for each extra night action you take.
For example, if that player is a cop with 2 BP, that player can choose between:
1. Defaulting. The cop will take no night action and go up to 3 BP.
2. Brave and spend one BP to cop someone. That player will go to 1 BP.
3. Brave and take an extra night action. You can only Brave once (to get two actions) which brings you down to 0 BP. You can cop two people now.
If you have 3 BP then you can take three night actions in one night, et al.

Mod Notes
To be honest, I thought the town was dominant for most of the game. After the Huntzilla lynch Day 1 and loran’s request to be replaced, I thought the scum were going to lose for sure - the scum weren’t on the Hunt wagon, so it wasn’t like they were cleared or anything. Furthermore, both of the scum were lurking hardcore, and fulcrum and Necarg were cleared from the Hunt lynch. ZDS did me a great favor replacing into a game that looked like it was going to being to be lost and doing a wonderful job paving the way to victory, so I have to give him the mafia MVP.
So, *how* exactly did the town lose from a dominant position? I can point to several factors, but I’ll just say this: The scum were insanely lucky to even have made it that far. The town was choke-full of power roles and had a ton of roles that could stop the scum in their tracks at any time. They mismanaged some of their roles, though, and the ones they didn’t mismanage the scum could bypass with the Jack-of-all-Trades. In addition, Sepiriel did an excellent job with the neighbor chat. I covered this in the spectator chat but one of the key things about N2 was ZDS bypassing both of the protect abilities and killing Vaimes. That was a great nightkill and the way they conveniently maneuvered to a lynch on Cythare was miraculous (I thought Sepiriel was going to be the one to swing). Cythare was going to kill ZDS and Sepiriel with his multi-vig-shot ability as well. It was amazing how Cythare never shot during the entire game - if he’d had done so even once the scum would have a very difficult time pulling out the win.
To put it shortly, mafia needed luck on their side as well as near-perfect play to pull out the win after the Hunt lynch, and both the luck and the skill came to them. The town got complacent in some areas (in D3 and D4) which the scum took advantage of. If I had to redesign this game, I’d probably remove the town JoaT and put in a vanilla, and rejigger the giving BP roles so that they wouldn’t be a 2:1 split (which was an unfortunate design decision). Unsure if I wanted to beef up scum BP totals.
----
Q&A time!
@Sepiriel: The reason why BP was removed at the very end was because I didn’t want to roleblock players who were using BP to use abilities. That would have made BP removal stronger than I wanted it to be.
@ZDS: The “pairings” didn’t come up during review. Literally the process for this game revolved around building around the BP mechanic and trying to fit flavor into roles in a elegant way. I wanted this game to be similar to one of Xyre’s minis/Hobbit/Dr. Polyopticon where there were a bunch of power roles flying around but the game still was fun.
@Bur:
1. Kikyo’s Dual Wield was a red herring to make sure that the scum couldn’t have figured the entirety of the game from one role.
2. Same with Hresvelgr, designed to be a somewhat weak ability that could work in narrow circumstances.
----
Let’s talk about the design decisions that went down with each role.
Airy: Meant to mostly be the mafia roleblocker. The previous incarnation of this role forced a player to either take a night action OR Default, and Megiddo told me to add this last-minute change with giving BP. In retrospect I wish I went with the old role so that the insta-clearing of two players didn’t happen. Wanted to see this role stay alive, but Huntzilla used his abilities in an interesting way (I would have given my BP to my teammates) which I guess ended working out in the end?
JoaT: Meant to circumvent the power cluster that this game had. This role didn’t change at all from when I first conceived it - it’s one of the more elegant roles that takes advantage of the BP system (in that you can “stack” abilities to make the NK more beneficial). I’ll cover the Tracker/Ninja more in the Tracker writeup. ZDS’s best use of the role, as I covered, was piercing the double-protect N2. Now that I think about it, the JoaT may have rendered parts of the setup useless (the doc, BG, JoaT did virtually nothing, ditto for tracker/watcher), so unsure if it was a great role design wise. I liked it, but it allowed most of the town’s power to be bypassed and was also swingy (if the Ninja was the first one offed).
Neighborizer: This guy went through a ton of changes, from a message sender, to a BP remover, to a neighborizer. The purpose of this role was to provide a townie-seeming false claim as opposed to the JoaT and Airy, and judging by Sepiriel’s use of it D2 he did a great job at it. Also doesn’t make the scum immediately die to a massclaim.
Bodyguard: One of my more favorite roles, though I’m unsure if putting three protective roles in the game was a smart idea. Rhand had the right idea for it in that you were supposed to build up until endgame then use it to protect a key target. Sadly fulcrum’s BP drain N1 quickly nullified this role in the beginning, and the Ninja role nullified it later in the game.
Tracker: Oh boy this role. So the reason why I decided to put the setup information in was that I was reading mafiascum design threads a while back and read this: http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?p=5138598
I essentially copied this interaction here:
Quote from hito »
Giving out information is like criminally amazing. I think it's not too common because mods like the idea of "defeating" players who "outguess" them or something. It's seriously super great though you guys.
Let's go back to our early example. Tracker and Ninja. It's a rude interaction and I think should be avoided. But what about this Tracker:
"You are a tracker.
You also know the scum have a Ninja.
The scum know there is a tracker in the setup, who knows they have a Ninja."
If you slip, even once, about the scum having a Ninja, the scum will know you're the tracker. Conversely, if the scum slip about knowing there's a tracker before your claim, you'll know they're scum. ("You know what would be so many style points I'd knock the Earth into the sun?") That's cool right there. If the Ninja dies, then when scum are down to one member left you get definitive innocents that you ******* EARNED. And if not? Well then. You know the scum Ninja is probably doing all the kills. So, you're not gonna try to track KILLERS. Maybe you track the person you think is a doc to be able to confirm their claim later...
You see? Look what I did! I took a role interaction that is smelly and bad, and made it cool, and I didn't add ANY power to the setup - just told players more about the setup. It's the universal fixer, baby.
I thought this was a cool minigame and turned a role interaction that I didn’t like into something interesting. Sadly I think this interaction would be better suited to a basic or something, since the tracker was one of the weaker power roles - the mafia didn’t really have much to worry about. In a game where the tracker was like, one of two/three power roles then I think this info giving minigame could work, or in a larger game. In this game most of the setup was divined from PoE so it didn’t have great impact.
Togs I felt made a mistake tracking N1 - I would have saved up BP, but Necarg saved him with the Vengeance trinket, allowing Togs to track every Night, which was a pretty significant upgrade. Problem was that scum had a built in way to deal with the tracker and it was lower on the totem pole for scum.
Doctor: Most of the notes on Bodyguard apply to here. Doctor and Bodyguard could create an unkillable situation but the scum had the tools to get rid of it (strongman kill). Generic took advantage of the BP mechanic, protecting two people some Nights, but again the scum had the JoaT.
Vigilante: This was a super swingy role. I wanted maybe a vig in the setup and originally this was just a one-shot vig, but I wanted it to interact with the BP system more and I reused Rhand’s role from Celestial Mafia. This role never ended up being used but it had the potential to end the game out of nowhere. I think this role would have been better suited in a larger game but is probably too swingy in a Mini, especially when piled on top of an already swingy BP system.
BP Manager: One of the town BP giving roles. I hoped that this wouldn’t be an auto clear because the BP drain felt pretty scummy, but fulcrum insta-cleared herself with the counterclaim. She only ever used the BP Drain N1 and gave it to Vaimes; she never did anything with her role after that. I think that maybe passing on BP to Cythare would have been important to the setup? That’s one of the problems with the JoaT role, I think - outside of fulcrum draining ZDS’s BP, the scum were clear from any BP related shenanigans.
Inventor: This was meant to be a skill testing role - it was good if given to town but if given to scum it would have been scary. The giving out 1 BP was added to prevent the user from just firing these off N1. Might have been a tad bit complex but I liked the role - had a neat twist on normal Inventors.
Vanilla: I feel compelled to mention that one of the Vanillas was a BP Cop before Megiddo forced me to change it.
--
How did everyone like the BP mechanic? I’d say that the mechanic strongly discourages you from losing your last shot, as that puts severe handicaps on your ability use for the next two Day phases.
Thoughts on flavor? It’s a pet peeve of mine when mods go like “flavor later” and then never add it *cough* Megiddo *cough*, so I made sure to write all of the flavor scenes in a (hopefully) timely manner.
Is there a reason why my games are always so inactive? This game didn’t break 1k posts, WitchHunt didn’t, uPick barely did. Unsure if it’s a problem with my modding or the playerbase.
I’ll reconsider the deadline system due to ZDS’s feedback - it’s true that the game needs more time in lylo situations. Unsure of a good compromise - any ideas? I typically am a fan of short deadlines but it fails when the playerbase is mostly inactive.
Last of all, thanks for playing, and special thanks for ZDS and Bur for replacing in!
overall i liked the BP system, it was interesting and added a layer of strategy to the game aside from the manipulations and schemes. My problem lied more on how swingy and power packed the setup was, i think i would have preferred a few things different:
1. Each Night you gain 1 BP (this is more in line with the original game mechanic), my reasoning for this is that then Defaulting doesnt become a "ow shucks i blew my load and now i need to wait" but rather a "ok do i blow my load now or do i wait for a bigger effect tomorrow?"
2. With a system like the BP system in place multiple tricks roles like JoaT's and Inventors make the game way too swingy, instead you could have made it so BP investment increased a power (say for example ZDS, 1BP gave him the ninja kill, 2 BP gave him a strongman hit, 3 BP gave something like a Strongarm Ninja kill or something equally silly)
3. The BP givers/takers synergized and neutered one another too much, the fact that Huntz couldnt bring up how dubious the whole point of 3 role effectively doing the same thing in some way or another coupled with him getting behaviorally caught was a big hit for the scum.
I think you did a good job with the flavor, i almost felt like the game could be flavor gamed to a win actually.... given the roles and fake claims the scum was given.
No complains on ZDS getting MVP i know i would have bungled it to a loss on D2 had it just been me alone

Each Night, you may either elect to Default, which grants you 1 BP, take a regular night action, which costs you 1 BP, or take additional night actions, which costs you 1 additional BP for each extra night action you take.
For example, if that player is a cop with 2 BP, that player can choose between:

@Bur:
