MTGS has been invited to participate in a mafia championship event organized by a site called Two Plus Two, involving representatives from sixty-five different mafia-playing communities, including mafiascum.net, epicmafia, and many others.
In a preliminary round, a private polling of non-council members conducted by Two Plus Two selected Cyan to represent us.
In this round, Iso brought the matter to the council's attention and we would like to open up the floor to the community at large for nominations.
The Details:
Quote from Iso »
- 65 different communities will be represented.
- 1 player per community for the entire season (preferably).
- 5 qualifying games will be played with 13 players each.
- 2 players advance to the finale from each game based on post-game votes.
- 3 additional players are granted wildcard spots.
Game setup
The game will have a very basic mafia setup: 3 mafia members, 9 vanilla townies and 1 cop. The cop starts the game with a random vanilla townie peek.
Some communities are not very used to playing basic setups like this, but for the first season, we utilized a setup with a good share of power roles, so this time around we are trying something new. For season 3 we will switch it up again.
Days will last 36 hours and nights 12 hours, meaning 48 hours (2 days) per game day. With one exception: The weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will be one game day. This means the game will last a maximum of 2 weeks.
Timeline
The first game is set to start April 6th. The other four games will take place in the 1-3 months after that. I will make a Doodle and find out the best times to start the 5 games so that preferably everyone gets to play during a time that suits them well.
In addition to this, it is also a priority to ensure as much as possible that all the players in any given game has no prior history of playing with each other to ensure a level playing field (but I cannot 100 % guarantee that this won't happen).
For my own personal short list, there are a number of players that I'd be looking at, such as Axelrod, if the format was less hectic and demanding of time. Cyan would be on my short list if we could guarantee he was scum in every game. We'd win hands down.
I've been hearing a lot of buzz about DCIII lately, and having seen him in action briefly once, I was impressed.
Iso is at the top of my list. His level of activity is phenomenal, he has plenty of experience, and he's one of our very best scum-hunters.
I'd like Iso to take a crack at it too, though I don't know if he has time. Same with DCIII (who I know doesn't).
Cyan did this last time around, but I don't really remember how it turned out (I think our team won but we didn't advance to the next round?).
Az are you available???
I'm available, and I'd love the opportunity represent what MTGS players are capable of accomplishing. Iso's also mentioned that he very much wants to be a part of this. In my last ten MTGS games as town, I've lynched accurately 19/23 times, and in my last four games as town, I caught an average of 2.5 out of three scum by the end of the first day, including two flawless town victories and two invitationals. Scum game is my achilles heel, as ever, but I picked up a few tricks in Crosstown 3 that might work well against people who aren't familiar with me. Just don't let Iso defect to the other side.
KoolKoal: Feel free to take this with a grain of salt since self meta isn't particularly helpful, but I think I get scumread mostly for style over substance, but also for a certain lack of substance over style. It's not so much what I AM posting most of the time (though sometimes that can seem bad) but what I'm NOT posting. I've been told I come to non-obvious conclusions a lot, so when I post, quite a bit of the time there's jumps in logic that people can't follow and they think that's scummy. I get that accusation about a lot of questions I ask specifically. People call them "busy work" when the questions are legit etc.
As far as things to ignore, I can't think of anything. I would suggest you focus less on what I'm doing and more on how I'm doing it. That's probably more likely to be accurate. Like I've just said, what I do tends to come off a little weird, but if you look for how I do it, mindset comes into play and maybe you figure out something useful.
I know I'm relatively new here, but whichever important person goes should be excused from any duties here. I think ISO seems to be stretched to the limit right now.

It's worth noting that I found this to be a completely abysmal experiment and wouldn't do it again even if it were offered to me(flattering though that may be). Their mafia day periods last a flat 48 hours, with night period lasting like..6? And the game we were in featured an absurd amount of scum. I would reasonably expect the scum teams to win 70% of the games hosted under this arrangement, due to their sizing, # of roles, and the general chaos of the gamestate. It wasn't fun at all, even though I was on the winning scum team(truthfully I never really got my footing and got aggressively vigged N1, but that has nothing to do with my perspective on the setup itself).
Looking over what Azrael copied, I see that some of my grievances have been addressed, mostly the 'actual game setup' ones. I think Iso could do okay in the environment that they use. It just wasn't for me.
Yeah I'm not actually criticizing the frenetic pace of the game, because that is purely a personal opinion type of thing. Just not my thing.
It's cool that you guys are doing things differently this time. Good luck with it. Giving the Cop a free investigation in an Open setup is interesting. I would expect the town to be slightly favored there normally anyway, given how much power a mafia team loses in an Open game. Just goes to show you how powerful '48 hour day periods' are for a scum team, I suppose.
I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate being mentioned in this discussion and I would love to represent us in something like this, but Meg and Proph are right that 24-48 hour Days wouldn't work at all for me right now.
Plus, there are others who have meant more to this site for longer and I'd love to see them get a chance if they want to...
I'd probably lean toward Iso getting the nod this time around in recognition of his 2014 poty and because he's probably our most visible player right now at this point in time - but Az is kind of like the MTGS godfather so we really can't go wrong if either represent us, IMO
Hmm...I've been thinking about it, and I think the fact that I'm no longer able to access my phone constantly at work is going to be a hindrance to the pace of the games, here. If I rectify my work situation in this regard by the next time this rolls around, I will hop on this immediately. That said, I think Az is best-suited for this as far as this run is concerned, as he has more Mafia years under his belt, and is probably a better town player than I am - plus, he said he had the time to commit to it.
I'll /out until next season, but thank you all for the kind words.

Since Iso /outed and DCIII can't do it, I'd like to nominate either Azrael or Megiddo.
Megiddo's a bit weaker than all the top tier vets but he's still plenty strong. I feel like he'd fit in right with the lollery (+ reaction gifs) but then actually get into "serious mode" and play when necessary. Celestial Mafia has proven that he can post a lot. He's definitely charismatic as well.
So, nothing against Iso at all, but if Az wants to play, I think he's the one that ought to do it. Call it seniority :P.
Only caveat is the time commitment, as it appears the people playing this can't have a life if they want to keep up.
Edit: and I see Iso has outted himself. Love this no preview forum software. (I had this window open for the past hour reading that other site.)

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
Is there anyone (else) among the current active players who is known for their quick wits and high posting rate ? (and can handle the 12 hours nights, which are a deal-breaker for me)
This is why I nominated Megiddo, for the reasons stated above.
I think Az would be fine assuming he had the requisite time. You can still case people and summarize people/read and retread people as long as you have the available time to do so.
And I've seen plenty of quick wit from him as well.
Kind of neat seeing the style I am used to being the one on display for such a big event.

The thing that takes a lot of time for me to accomplish in mafia is proving to other people that the reads I formed in ten seconds on the fly from a couple of sentence fragments in a 500 word post are legit. I'm guessing there's not going to be an overabundance of that going around from *anyone*.
I wouldn't mind test-driving the format a little bit before hand. My primary concern is that I don't know what my employment schedule will be doing a few weeks from now. I suspect I'll still be doing a very small number of hours of high-paying work and sitting on my butt the rest of the time waiting for more victims clients to wander in. If so, I'll have nothing but time to devote to this. If not, and I start traveling to courthouses and spending most of the day away from my computer, we'll need an alternate.
The GameFAQs contest board. I've played in 100+ games of that style. We're kind of a sheltered community though, doubt many will have heard of us.

If it's title abstracting, I'll have zero notice. If it's a hearing, I'll have advance notice.
Seppel would be a great option for this playstyle, come to think of it. His reads are always on-target, his usual problem is getting people to follow them. Not so much of an issue here.
I feel like Seppel's playstyle and reads have deteriorated a bit, lately, and I'm not sure he'd have the time to commit, given that he has a 5-month old, now.

I'll post this here since your friends might want to help you out:
Could you send me a bio of yourself for the game? It can be as long as you want, though maybe don't make it a complete tl;dr, since nobody's gonna read that. Feel free to include whatever you think relevant: Some comments on your style, your history with the game, any accolades you've won, any interesting stats, any funny quotes, your political stance, hobbies, whether you are right handed or left handed - spice it up however you want :). It's mostly because it's fun for spectators and players alike to read the bios, but it's also a way of getting some insight into your fellow competitors of course.
And when did you start playing mafia?
Sure. Using the same format from previous games?
Started Playing In: 2005, just after the Cretaceous period.
Qualifications: Meow
Bio: The person above me is scum. When the game starts, I'm going to convince everyone of this by furiously bludgeoning everyone with a series of exhaustive dissertations, and by my cunning and overabundant use of smilies. I am never scum, so you can always trust me and everything I say. Always. I am known for my ability to clear townies en masse, finding scum via process of elimination, and in the past two years have an 82.6% lynch accuracy rate as town. In response to how often strange people come knocking at my door in the night, I developed the counter-strategy of seeking to identify the entire scum team on the first day of the game. I look forward to pulling that off over the course of 48-hours, as opposed to my usual 480 hours. Should be a piece of cake. Bow to your master.

I'm just glad I'm not even close enough to good to be asked to represent MTGS... not that I'd accept given that I've been on 2p2 longer than I've been on MTGS.
They haven't posted a list of the invited sites yet, I asked Thingyman to do so (but don't expect them to actually do so).

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
usmessageboard.com has a dedicated community. Debatepolitics.com has a games section which runs mafia games but you have to be registered to see them. Also dominionstrategy.com has an active community. You also have to be registered to see the mafia section.
When we ran our cross-town series with mafiascum recently, our primary contact person was Hoopla. I would imagine you've got a pretty good shot at bringing them around.
