Rules: #1: Don't edit your posts. Do not expect leniency as far as this rule goes. #2: Don't quote any PM from any player, especially me. You will be modkilled and recommended for probation. When paraphrasing, if you have any doubt that your paraphrase may be unacceptable, ask me first. #3: Don't discuss this game (or any other active game) with anyone except myself and anyone delineated in your role PM. #4: Don't lurk to excess. RL comes for everyone. It's understandable. Just keep me updated on what your situation is. If you anticipate being able to continue in the game, I will work with you, and if you don't think it will be possible, I'll look for a replacement. But if you simply drop out of the game without any communication, that will likely have an adverse effect on your chances of getting into my games in future. #5: The Forum Rules apply in this game and in all games. Mafia is a game of high tension due to the levels of suspicion and paranoia involved, and I know from personal experience the effect it can have on some players. Be sure to keep your behavior within the guidelines stated, however. Flaming will not be tolerated. #6: Lynching will require a simple majority of votes. Once the lynch threshold has been reached, nothing can prevent that lynch and the game is considered to be in "twilight." Posting during twilight is allowed. Twilight lasts from the time the lynch threshold is reached until the next time that I post in the thread. In this game, twilight is followed by a period of "dusk." Posting during dusk is NOT allowed. Dusk will usually last 24 hours, but whatever its length, I will clearly state when it will end. After dusk ends, night begins. Do not send in your night ability choices during dusk. Night abilities are for the night phase. This system of twilight, dusk and night is intended to give all players a fair chance to be online when night officially begins for purposes of using Survey abilities. #7: Please bold your votes and unvotes. Votes made without unvoting first will not count. #8: Deadlines are set at the start of each day. Barring exceptional circumstances, those deadlines are immutable and will not be changed. If the deadline is reached without achieving a lynch, the day will end in No Lynch. The deadline remains static - votes made after it has passed will not count even if I have not made it to the thread yet. #9: Once you die, you are dead. Do not post. This includes "bah" posts. Do not communicate about anything game-related with any player, alive or dead, even if you think that communication does not endanger the game state or is not "important." Expect absolutely no leniency as far as this rule goes. #10: Night actions must be in by the night deadline. The deadline remains static - choices made after it has passed will not count even if I have not started the day yet. If you do not plan to use your night action, please inform me, as day will start once all choices are in. #11: There will never be a Jester in any game that I host. #12: After you have requested replacement or after I have announced that I am seeking a replacement for you - whichever comes first - your time in the game has ended. Do not post any further. #13: If you don't know, ask. I am online all the time and I'm happy to help you with any questions you may have. Please don't commit avoidable breaches of these rules because you didn't ask for clarification.
Game mechanics
There are 5 zones in Grim Batol: in order, they are The Antechambers, the Condemned Halls, Khardros's Anvil, the Scarred Terrace, and the Lifebinder's Cell. Each of these is linked to the zone directly before and directly after it - that is, players in the Condemned Halls can only move into the Antechambers or Khardros's Anvil. The town (used here to refer to "all players in the game", not only townies) begins the game in The Antechambers.
Movement is decided during the day by a majority vote of living players. As long as a zone move is not already on the table, any player can propose one by posting "Propose: Zone Move to <Zone Name>." Players may then "vote: Zone Move Yes" or "vote: Zone Move No." Votes will be tallied in vote counts and can be unvoted and re-voted at the players' discretion. If a zone move proposal reaches a simple majority of yes votes, the group agrees to move to that location at dusk (that is, when the lynch post is posted.) If a zone move proposal reaches a simple majority of no votes, it is off the table, but may be re-introduced at any time. If a day ends while a zone move proposal is tabled, if it does not have a simple majority of yes votes, it is canceled and a new proposal may be brought up on the next game day.
The minimum amount of time that can be spent in any zone is a full day-night cycle, except at the start of the game when the group can move from the Antechambers to the CH at dusk on D1 without spending a full day there.
Dwarves love archaeology and the study of their past. Many dwarven players' abilities depend on the relics they have acquired. Players whose abilities are affected by relics have the ability to Survey. During the night, a player with Survey may attempt to uncover 1, 2 or 3 relics. If the action is successful (i.e. not roleblocked), they will gather as many relics as they attempted to discover. Each relic gained adds 1 point to the player's Relic Power, which is what directly affects their abilities. Some abilities may consume RP, some abilities may simply require a threshold.
Since each zone has a limited number of relics available, Surveying is a competitive affair. The success of Survey attempts is governed by two factors - number of relics hunted and timestamps. The Survey abilities of players who attempted to Survey just one relic will resolve before those of players who attempted to Survey up two relics, and same goes for players who attempted to Survey up three. Then, within each tier, Surveys resolve in order of submission. If night falls at 6:00 pm and is scheduled to end at 11:00 pm, Johnny Surveys 3 at 6:05 pm, Anna Surveys 1 at 6:10 pm and Robert Surveys 1 at 10:55 pm, Anna's Survey will resolve first, then Robert's, then Johnny's.
Players who Survey when there are no more relics remaining will get nothing. If the relics run out in the middle of a multi-relic Survey (i.e. if you Survey 3 and the zone has only 2 relics remaining at time of resolution), you'll get whatever's left.
Surveying can be undertaken in addition to any other night action. You can submit your Survey action and any other night action you wish to perform in separate PMs, if you want.
"Corruption" is a general shorthand term for the effects of the Old Gods on the players and may refer to physical corruption or mental trauma/madness.
Non-mafia players begin at 0 Corruption and can reach 100 Corruption. Any player who reaches 100 Corruption dies immediately. Conversely, as their enemies become more corrupted, the Mafia gain more power.
In this game, the mafia manipulate Corruption in order to unleash untold horrors on the unsuspecting town. In most cases, townies are not aware of their exact Corruption level, but they know when it reaches 25, 50, 75, and of course, 100.
Unless otherwise noted, a player can only perform one action classified as "active" during each day/night cycle. If Jimmy has 1 active day ability and 2 active night abilities, he can perform his day ability every day phase (as long as he meets its requirements) but he can only choose one of his night abilities to perform each night phase. Survey is a notable exception to this rule; there may be others.
Actions classified as "anytime" may be performed at any time, as long as the player meets the requirements to use the ability, and as many times as the player is able to pay for.
The Mafia nightkill can be used by any mafioso and is subject to certain special rules. This is it: Offering to the Deep Ones (night, active, 15 Favor): Target a player. You perform a monstrous ritual and the targeted player is dragged Below by the Old Gods, killing him or her. When using this ability, you cannot use any other ability on the same night, but watchers, trackers or other similar abilities will not see you targeting the victim of this ability. This ability can be used only once per night.
Townie win condition: You win when the scum are destroyed. Every townie has this exact win condition.

A chill highland wind blew through the antechambers of forbidden Grim Batol as the expedition, headed by Brann Bronzebeard, Kurdran Wildhammer and Axtroz the red dragon, passed through the grand doors that had been sealed for thirty years. Apprehension and wonder alternated in the eyes of the Bronzebeards; the Wilhammers, grimly wary, followed behind, and the red dragonflight's detachment headed up the rear, faces set in the sort of implacable expressions that only dragons can summon. Their steps echoed through the empty, lifeless halls. The crunch of rubble underfoot was the only other sound.
"Let's set up our camp here, by the entrance to the city proper," Axtroz proposed, and the members of the expedition hastened to follow his suggestion. For a few minutes, the mundane processes of unpacking and settling an expeditionary camp helped the explorers to forget they were inside a ruin that had not been explored in decades - and that had not been available to the Alliance in centuries. But moment by moment, minute by minute, the dwarves began to become uneasy. Some whirled and spun at odd noises, only to decide they had heard nothing. Some looked with suspicion on their fellows. Some stared, eyes wide with sudden terror, at images that did not exist.
"Ah'm startin' tae think somethin's oop," a dwarf muttered to a companion, the sound carrying, echoing. Oop...oop...oop. Slowly, the explorers began to edge away from one another, eyes downcast but still keeping a close vigil. All of a sudden, a terrible crashing boom thundered through the antechamber, a sound the explorers felt in their bones. "The doors have closed themselves!" a dwarf cried. Then - slowly, almost imperceptibly, chaos began to take over. Wildhammer accused Bronzebeard, clan-mate cursed clan-mate and brother attacked brother, a din of paranoia and fear that churned like highland butter. "This was a trap!" a hoarse dwarf's voice called, and if he was heard, there was nobody in the chamber who disagreed with him.
Then, a piercing scream. Silence. Eyes glazed with fear and faces haunted by horror turned to its source: the red dragon Axtroz, standing bolt upright, transfixed. "I see them!" the dragon roared. "I see them! They are among us!" Us...us...us. The echo hadn't quite faded by the time Axtroz crashed to the cold stone floor, plainly dead. The dwarves looked on in uncomprehending terror; the reds remained as impassive as ever.
"Silence!" Brann shouted, but there was no need. After the cacophony that had filled the antechamber before Axtroz's pronouncement, the only sound in Grim Batol was the faintest echo of the red dragon's body falling to the floor. "We're trapped here for the moment, it seems, but we cannae give up hope. We have the Light, the Alliance, and the reds on our side. Axtroz said, 'They are among us.' Seems evident we've got tae find 'them', whoever they may be."
"Aye," a dwarf's voice from the crowd murmured. "Seems like they've already found us."
Staring eyes move from face to face, looking for clues. On this dwarf's face, fear. On that one's, wariness. On another's, horror. One thing is certain to all present: for some of those in this chamber, the visages of worry and fear are only masks that conceal a deeper evil - the evil that killed Axtroz and that threatens the expedition. The question is no longer one of Grim Batol's forgotten secrets, but of whether any of the explorers will live to tell of them.
This is WoW Mafia: Secrets of Grim Batol. And Day One has begun. With 23 alive, it's 12 to lynch.
Deadline is set for Friday, June 3rd, 10:00pm EST.
The group is presently in the Antechambers Zone.
Ach! Ah see that knave Cyan haes yeet to hang up his boots bah th' olde fire. All that gibberin and jabberin bout retiremeent must haf just been posturin for th' town folks. Fool mah once, shame on me, fool me twice, shame on ye!
Also vote No, there'll be relics to uncover in the antechambers, not point moving before getting the chance to search here
I would like to advance deeper into the dungeon for role-related reasons, but if you think it would be better to excavate some relics in the Antechamber first, we can do that.
I'm against a soft claim this early in the game, I dont see what can be gained by it other they some PR hunting by scum team.
Also vote No, there'll be relics to uncover in the antechambers, not point moving before getting the chance to search here
You're right, for some reason I thought that we'd be able to survey one night before moving if we move tonight, but I'm wrong after rereading the rules.
Vote: NO to zone change.

I would much rather discuss the probable lack of night kills this game. Or perhaps relic distribution per location/optimal searching setup. Or consequences of moving further into the halls. Or any number of other things unique to this setup that is better to discuss than roles.

Why do you think there is a probable lack of NKs?
I, for one, plan on surveying 3 as soon as my handy dandy smartphone email app tells me that it's night-time.

And I'm always down for a soft claim. And no on the move.
I'm amused that [Shalako], of all people, are talking about terrible reasoning. "Hey, PF's RVS daykill must be serious, therefore I should shoot him to prove that I have a daykill!"
EBWODP: Also, the corruption mechanic will cause what are essentially NKs. I would bet that at least one Mafia can give someone +100 corruption or something that is essentially a NK.

Vote: Lost_Profit
I have no idea what favor is, but I can tell you with relative certainty it is a cost. And you're underestimating me if you think I would hand out super secret role information in the first page of the game as scum.

The existence of corruption is reason 2 why I believe the real night kill will be inconsistent. Or perhaps it means that there will be no serial killer, as the mafia have access to more than 1 kill per day on average.

I seem to recall this game not having a normal mafia NK mechanic when presented in the PCQ thread. Now there seems to be one. I PM'd zindabad about this but received no reply (unsurprisingly). Something to ponder, though not really useful for purposes of scum-hunting.
I have it on good authority that the Phyrexians are going to win. However, Venser is then going to teleport the whole of New Phyrexia inside the Zendikar Hedrons, leaving the Phyrexians and Eldrazi trapped in an eternal struggle of the mechanics that nobody likes.
The next set will feature both infect and annihilator, and be called Maro'sWetDreamia. It will also feature a new Jace, to ensure that it sells well.

The game is not being dumbed down. Control is doing fine; Draw-Go is not the only kind of control. Aggro is doing fine; Red Deck Wins is not the only kind of aggro. Creature combat is an important core concept and belongs in every color. Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

Learn what OMGUS is.
How would you know what my "classic scumtell" is when you've never been in a game where I was lynched as scum? But hey, keep digging. You might hit pay dirt, or you might end up in China.
Just some preventative planning, we should agree to claim our corruption level when we're notified it has risen (the 25, 50, 75 level).
I don't think this is a good idea. Instead, players with relevant information to share should simply share it if they suspect that they will be dead soon.
If it's a fight they be wantin', it's a fight they be gettin'!
Vote: No on moving, both because there's still relics here for surveying and because vez wants to.
Vote: DRey. Seriously, AI and I went back and forth about overreacting and over-aggressiveness (in Powerful Wizard if I'm not mistaken) and it ended up we were both Town. It's not his classic scumtell. Using a FoS this early for something even semi-serious and then gloating about "hit[ting] gold" when you haven't even voted him says to me you're looking for other opinions about it before committing. Classic scumtell indeed.
I say keep your corruption level to yourself unless you think it important. We don't want the scum knowing who's close to death if say for instance they can give someone 25 corruption easier than 50 or something like that.

I need to get to the last three chambers. I agree with the race soft claim.
Since we've already got people spitting it out, perhaps we should all claim what if any room our role has preference for. This would let us make movement decisions based on how townie the people who want to go there are, instead of basically randomly. The cons are that if the mafia have reason to lie about it there's no obviously way to catch them.
I think this is a good claim idea, but I'm not sure. There might be other drawbacks I'm not seeing. Discuss.

The obvious drawback is that it roots out vanillas, if there are any. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be a drawback, but on the other hand, the amount of benefit we get out of such a claim is fairly limited.
But I'm for it, since at the very least we'll get some discussion going.
I don't think this is a good idea. Instead, players with relevant information to share should simply share it if they suspect that they will be dead soon.
Some of those names are definitely getting abbreviated next time.
I know WoD's going through a tough time personally at the moment, so he'll get more time, but if he doesn't confirm/post in the next 48 hours I'll have to replace him.
Let's say there's a cop with at least 75 Corruption. I think it's better for him to come out and claim his targets and results rather than risk getting killed before he can do so.
Just some preventative planning, we should agree to claim our corruption level when we're notified it has risen (the 25, 50, 75 level).
I disagree, because I don't believe the mafia are the only things manipulating corruption level. I imagine they have the ability to do so, but there are other factors that will affect players' levels, a large one probably being in the location mechanic. Another reason not to head too deep before it is necessary.

I prioritize relic hunting over moving, and will be voting against moving forward if I feel there are enough relics left to survey on a given night. And conversely, will be moving forward if we exhaust the location's supply of relics.
my role doesnt really care about location nor relics. i agree we go/stay on the location where more players benefit, because we have more town than scum, so its harder for scum to direct for a location where they will benefit more.

I don't think we should claim role reasons for being in certain zones unless we're in that zone about to move out of it. I think we should just stay here until we're out of relics.
As to claiming corruption, I actually think that claiming as a cop with 75 corruption is even better if town can modifiy it. Sure it will draw scum +corruption abilities, but it could also draw town -abilities (if they exist), possibly enough to save the cop. And if the scum waste their NK on someone with such high corruption, that's good for us.

Actions classified as "anytime" may be performed at any time, as long as the player meets the requirements to use the ability, and as many times as the player is able to pay for.
Offering to the Deep Ones (night, active, 15 Favor): Target a player.

Townish response.
I would like to advance deeper into the dungeon for role-related reasons, but if you think it would be better to excavate some relics in the Antechamber first, we can do that.
As for the race claim lets go with....meah why not
As for the movement i'm against it to. What benefit does an early move have for us?
You're right, for some reason I thought that we'd be able to survey one night before moving if we move tonight, but I'm wrong after rereading the rules.

Against soft claims, because they're inevitably worthless except as a discussion topic.

The existence of corruption is reason 2 why I believe the real night kill will be inconsistent. Or perhaps it means that there will be no serial killer, as the mafia have access to more than 1 kill per day on average.

i was just prodding you, but considering your huge overraction (AI's classic scumtell), maybe ive hit gold already, feeling good.
I don't think this is a good idea. Instead, players with relevant information to share should simply share it if they suspect that they will be dead soon.

OK, better claim suggestion:
Since we've already got people spitting it out, perhaps we should all claim what if any room our role has preference for. This would let us make movement decisions based on how townie the people who want to go there are, instead of basically randomly. The cons are that if the mafia have reason to lie about it there's no obviously way to catch them.
I think this is a good claim idea, but I'm not sure. There might be other drawbacks I'm not seeing. Discuss.
Why did you name these three players?
Current New Favorite Person™: Mallory Archer
She knows why.
The obvious drawback is that it roots out vanillas, if there are any. Other than that, there doesn't seem to be a drawback, but on the other hand, the amount of benefit we get out of such a claim is fairly limited.
But I'm for it, since at the very least we'll get some discussion going.
A combination of veteran status and respect for your skills.

"...a talisman against all evil, so long as you obey me."
Let's say there's a cop with at least 75 Corruption. I think it's better for him to come out and claim his targets and results rather than risk getting killed before he can do so.
I say this also, of course, because:
I prioritize relic hunting over moving, and will be voting against moving forward if I feel there are enough relics left to survey on a given night. And conversely, will be moving forward if we exhaust the location's supply of relics.

how come i dont know what OMGUS means? "oh my god you suck" was exactly what you meant after i mentioned your strange post to JD, its all right there for everyone to read, you even voted on me to boot, plus you know very well what OMGUS means and you know you did it.
to conclude, you know very well i have experience with your scum play (no questions, cant talk about it yet). and im not afraid of your threats, im not letting you go because i can find dirt or china .
sorry, but i dont vote without true conviction, never have never will. AI is in no way confirmed scum for me, but the way things are going he may be soon enough.
Mythic rarity is not destroying the game. People whine too much for no good reason. Magic is more popular than ever, so keep calm, brew some decks and play some damn cards.

It's not OMGUS if I had a valid reason to vote you, which I did.
But you have no experience with my town play, so for all you know everything I've done so far is a null tell. (Hint: It is.)
Keep hedging your bets there, champ.
This is sound logic.
I don't think the scum killing the cop is ever "good for us." But I get the gist of what you're saying.
As I said in my other game, my father recently passed, so my activity may well be down for awhile. If you feel the need to replace me, that's fine.
Being an avid WoWer and DnDer, wouldn't there likely be more relics deeper into the dungeon anyway? Vote Yes.
