Roles [stolen from Absolutionis]: Roles - Town
-In Mafia, there are two basic roles - Townie and Mafioso. Townies are the 'good guys' and Mafioso are the 'bad guys'.
-Townies are of the Town faction and are made up of those trying to figure out the identities of the killers and prevent them from killing again. For the town to win, they must kill all members of the mafia.
-The Town Cop has the ability to target a player and discern whether that player is town or mafia once per night.
-The Town Doctor has the ability to target a player and prevent that player from being killed that night.
Roles - Mafia
-In Mafia, there are two basic roles - Townie and Mafioso.
-Mafioso, will win when they exceed or equal the town in number (at which point, they control the lynch). They may also post during the day and use both votes and FOSes. However, they have another tool - the ability to nightkill.
-While the game is in night, the mafia may communicate with each other. Then, one of them will send me the name of one living player to be killed.
-Once I have received the mafia’s Night Choice, as well as the choice of any other player with a night ability, I will post a morning scene detailing the public results of the previous night (i.e. who died), and Day will start.
Other Roles you should be Aware of
-The game of Mafia may have many roles aside from the ones mentioned above. The following roles are newbie-friendly roles may or may not be in this game:
-Tracker - A townie that may, every night, see if a target player performed a night action that night.
-Watcher - A townie that may, every night, see if a target player was targetted with a night action that night.
-Vigillante - A townie that has the ability to kill at night. This ability is usually restricted as being once-per-game or upon death only or other modifiers.
-Mason - Two or more townies that have the ability to talk at night
-Backup Cop/Doc - A townie which if the original doctor or cop dies, this role will take over that player's abilities of doctor or cop respectively.
-Roleblocker - A mafioso that has the ability to negate a player's abilities each night.
-Godfather - A mafioso that turns up 'town' on cop investigations.
-Survivor - A neutral whose sole goal is to survive to the end of the game. Does not count as town nor mafia.
-Serial Killer - A neutral whose sole goal is to kill everyone else. Does not count as town nor mafia.
10/12 players have confirmed. Frenger, please confirm via PM, as stated at the top of this post.

Is the first day always people voting for each other at random for stupid reasons?
And CropCircles, if you do actually have a way to kill someone during the day, why use it immediately? Unless the innocents are vastly outnumbered, which seems astronomically unlikely, it is nothing short of madness to murder at random. Though I of course don't know all the rules, I do know that you are no ally, for no one but a psychopath or a blackguard would dare lay a hand on a possible innocent.
Anyway I refuse to cast a meaningless vote for silly reasons. If there's a way to avoid killing anyone during the day, I'm all for that, since odds are we would kill an innocent, and we would be better to give the detectives at least one night to do their work. I vote not to lynch anyone today (if I can do that). With this alien menace lurking, we cannot afford to turn on each other so rashly. We must stand together! UNITY! STRENGTH! WHATEVER IT IS HALO IS ABOUT! Yay.

Pretty much, people always do random votes, it's part of the game.
Vote No Lynch is usually very bad for the town Day 1. All it leaves the town with is one less person, and no real information to go on (barring a Cop result)

Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
By saying them you are implying that he is town, and someone from town wouldn't purposly vote town so you must be scum right?
No since scum can't talk to each other in the day phase, so if he got stuck with a newb scum partner he could be giving him ideas to teach him how to play.

Here comes the no lynch debate again. I commend you; that's the best way to end the random voting stage.
I'd support your logic, if not your vote, if it was possible to be more of a newb at this than me.
I have played precisely no games of mafia before this one, so the idea of me trying to teach anyone anything is laughable.
I've read most of the recent games to try and get a handle on how to play and it seems that both the discussion of a nolynch first day and mass claims come up pretty much every time.
The other thing that has come up from reading is that people tend to look badly on claims of newbdom as a defence so I promise to try not to do that from now on as that discussion distracts from the process of finding scum.
psst... don't tell anyone, but it was a random vote!
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
CC> Thanks for the vote of confidence, even though I just accused you Now I fully expect to die immediately.
As for the no lynch thing, this is my first mafia at MtGS so I don't know how often the "no lynch" thing has come up, but I stick to it. If we don't lynch anyone, it's true that we'll lose someone tonight, but if we DO lynch someone, we'll very likely lose TWO innocents without any more evidence. And what's the point in that? Unless we have reason to believe someone is infected (which is almost impossible on the first day), or that there are a very large proportion of people infected (also highly unlikely), it still makes no sense to lynch someone randomly on the off chance that we hit an infected person. And building up enmities, however trivial, sows the seeds for dissent, and that helps no one but the infected.
bigcountry> Is that really likely? I mean, maybe I'm just hesitant to read too much into anything, but I doubt anyone would give away their role so easily. And I still have yet to hear the infamous "anti-no-lynch" argument.

From my understanding, mafia is a game of educated guesses, seldom with concrete, conclusive evidence. I'm making a guess as to how a mafioso might approach your no-lynch argument.
As for being against no-lynch, refer to my first statement. We need lynches for extra information that is concrete (who voted who), so we can make the guesses as to who is scum. I believe, also, if you run numbers, we'd have just as many days to figure stuff out if we no-lynched than if you went ahead and lynched someone.

But if the first day is just random lynching, then how is any of that "concrete evidence?" Voting for someone because high-fives are overrated is far from concrete evidence. Maybe I'm just not accustomed to how things work around here.

There are little nuances in how scum and Town line up on a lynch, and we can study bandwagons, how people hop on and off different lynches, etc. The actual reasoning for lynches can also be examined, but there's more to a Day than just that.
Anyway, I'd suggest you get off the no-lynch kick, accept it as is for now, and start scumhunting. Otherwise I'll be gunning for you over lack of contribution.

The first day is not "random lynching". We randomly vote for awhile. Then someone decides to read more into a random vote or claim a post is "scummy". From there the true game really starts and we start looking for patterns and tactics used by players, to try and get someone lynched. Often times scum will bandwagon onto a vote, in order to try to end the day - because they know it won't be one of their number...hammering(the last vote) without some time also is a scum tell. Moreover, the first "lynch" will NOT be random, but will be of the scummiest player on day one.

Samoht> Ah, that makes more sense. After all, if the first phase is a day phase, SOMEthing has to get the ball rolling, ridiculous or not...
As for the infection, I don't even know what to think at this point. I'll unvote no-lynch for now but I don't see anyone suspicious enough to condemn just yet. I don't like making enemies, no matter whose team I'm on

Ok if we no lynch we definitely don't lose a townie, so what happens if things stay status quo? Do we no lynch again? When would you get around to voting?

Disagree with you on the last point. Newbie games are for learning how the game works, patterns of behavior, what makes the game of Mafia how it is. While I love RP, it can interfere with the learning process. Take a look at Hamlet Mafia or Berserk Mafia for enjoyable, but high-quality RP mafia experience. We're simply not on a level with that in noob games yet.

This has got to be one of the fastest random stages I have seen.
not sure RPing is a great idea in a newbie game, given I know nothing about Halo, and I don't know if the characters are well defined enough to RP effectively anyway.
I am in no fit state to analyse. more to come when I am less tipsy!
Archmage Eternal> I've dropped the no lynch thing, but the idea is simply that if there are townie-friendly night roles (like detectives, doctors etc.), it's best to give them at least one night to do some good rather than risk killing them ourselves the very first day. I'm not used to games with so many custom roles, though, and this is my first game on MtGS, so my argument may not even be applicable to this game (or any games on this forum for that matter).
zindabad/Ecophagy> Sorry, I forgot that many players haven't played before, since everyone keeps using the routine terminology. I guess roleplaying isn't really useful then...although why have custom themes in newbie mafia at all? But whatever. I still don't like the word "scum"
bigcountry> I just meant that I'm not an aggressive or argumentative person. If I'm evil, I'd rather make nice and lull the townies into liking me before stabbing them in the back. If I'm good, I'd rather work together and try to figure out who's evil rather than bicker amongst ourselves. Accusing someone on minimal evidence is just likely to attract enemies, so I try to avoid it.
Im a little confused by this post. Can you please explain to me why CC/Ced hasve to be scum - or even why at least one of them has to be scum?
It's just an accusation, like anything else. As to why:
+CC's post is a whole lot of nothing plus a meaningless "bet." Reading posts like this I think, "Why even post this?" or "Well, he's scum, so of course he can say that."
+ced395, on the other hand, looks a bit worse, which is why I voted him. He's making it a big deal to explain to Milldawg the no-lynch argument. Then, there's a weird interaction with CC, and finally, he asks someone else to do the explaining. A whole lot of nothing trying to appear to be something.
@Milldawg: but we get nowhere if we don't start accusing, so I encourage some stretches when it comes to Day 1.

@Milldawg: I understand your thinking in a no lynch, it's just tough waiting around knowing someone will die at night. Then what happens? Say the doc investigates a townie then we're back to day one with just speculation to go on waiting for someone to say something someone else doesn't take to, then a vote. I think you really have to jump on someone and see how they defend themselves and who else jumps on board to vote them, or even defend them.

I dont get this at all, CCs posts have been meaningless since he hasnt posted since the game got semi serious, he posted in the random stage which is basically a whole lot of nothing
Ced probly thought that everyone felt the same way as him, I guess thats not the case, I dont see anything scummy about the posts.
Streches are streches, but I think your snapping the rubber band here.
I guess I'm more logical than psychological, which isn't very helpful. When Archmage said "jump on someone and see how they react" my thought was "but how can their reaction reveal anything?" It's not like those who have evil roles are inherently evil; they haven't even done anything yet. We don't even have facial expressions to read; people can react however they want and tailor their responses as much as they want. I guess I'm just highly skeptical that anything will be found out during the first day.

I'm a pretty firm believer that all of Day 1 should be under scrutiny, whether it falls in what we're calling the "random" stage or not. CC is more of a stretch than ced395, I won't argue with you. However, I still think the posts those two made re: Milldawg are more likely to be made by scum than Town. And that would be because they seem to convey wanting to add to the Town, but ultimately accomplish nothing.

bigcountry> Indeed, indicating someone as innocent isn't especially helpful. But surely the mafia would realize this, and think about it before speaking? This is what I get for being a philosophy major and assuming that everyone is 100% perfectly logical, and therefore believing that the only possible evidence is actual events
Archmage> Well in the games I'm used to, the townspeople often rely on the detectives to gather concrete evidence rather than psychological cues. As such, they do all they can to keep the detectives alive and give them as long as possible. Killing someone on day allows for the possibility of killing a detective, which can only hurt the townspeople. It seems games on this forum are much more psychologically-based, though, which I'll have to get used to.

Yay.

C'mon, if your gonna random vote at least come up with an amusing reason
Yeah, pretty much, it usually starts serious when someone accuses someone else of something, then the game gets all serious and stuff.
I'm pretty sure it was a joke =p
Pretty much, people always do random votes, it's part of the game.
Vote No Lynch is usually very bad for the town Day 1. All it leaves the town with is one less person, and no real information to go on (barring a Cop result)

You're giving them ideas!!
By saying them you are implying that he is town, and someone from town wouldn't purposly vote town so you must be scum right?
No since scum can't talk to each other in the day phase, so if he got stuck with a newb scum partner he could be giving him ideas to teach him how to play.
Thanks for Daykilling him CC, oh scum buddy of mine
Here comes the no lynch debate again. I commend you; that's the best way to end the random voting stage.

As for the infection, I don't even know what to think at this point. I'll unvote no-lynch for now but I don't see anyone suspicious enough to condemn just yet. I don't like making enemies, no matter whose team I'm on
And guys...needs moar roleplaying. Why bother to have themes if you're gonna use "scum" and "FoS" and such utterly theme-neutral jargon? The only reason I'm not roleplaying more is that I have no idea about anything in the Halo universe. FOR AIUR?

Ok if we no lynch we definitely don't lose a townie, so what happens if things stay status quo? Do we no lynch again? When would you get around to voting?

Disagree with you on the last point. Newbie games are for learning how the game works, patterns of behavior, what makes the game of Mafia how it is. While I love RP, it can interfere with the learning process. Take a look at Hamlet Mafia or Berserk Mafia for enjoyable, but high-quality RP mafia experience. We're simply not on a level with that in noob games yet.

As for the roleplaying... you probably won't get that from me. Sorry.

not sure RPing is a great idea in a newbie game, given I know nothing about Halo, and I don't know if the characters are well defined enough to RP effectively anyway.
I am in no fit state to analyse. more to come when I am less tipsy!
zindabad/Ecophagy> Sorry, I forgot that many players haven't played before, since everyone keeps using the routine terminology.

Granted, but at least OMGUS is a reason.
