Yeah...you're right.
There's not much point delaying it any longer I suppose. If Raf's not mafia, then I don't know who it really could be.

Lies! -I'm Buffy Summers, town tracker. I used my ability on you and saw that you didn't use any abilities before the game started. My flavor is I was sucked through a mysterious space-time portal and I'm here to kill all the vampires, and my tracking ability is a combination of my Slayer and Native American skills.
And so, after months of discussion, accusation and murder, the surviving heroes gather together for one final decision. But first, there is yet another revelation -
"Neutral?" cries out loran16. "What do you mean, Neutral? What the heck is going on here?"
goatrevolt sniffs, "I simply know which way the wind is blowing, that's all. And, like any good politician, I'm hedging my bets. You people do what you want, it's really all the same to me."
A few eyebrows are raised, but the consensus appears to be that this group has bigger concerns than a self-proclaimed "Neutral" at the present time.
"The final Traitor must be between Rafaelk and Stormblind!" say all. "After all, we all know it can't possibly be either of these two paintings standing over here."
"Standing?"
Rafaelk and Stormblind look at each other. Then together they squint into the gloomy back section of the chamber.
"You know, for a pair of paintings, those two look awfully...umm...three-dimensional, don't they?"
"And I certainly don't remember paintings being able to hold Wands...."
A voice speaks from the darkness, "It is time."
And with that, arms linked, loran16 and AlphaInsidious waltz out into the light.
"My, my, my," sings loran16, Bellatrix Lestrange, Vengeful Mafia, "Isn't this such a pretty picture? Don't you think so, Cousin?"
"Really, dear," says AlphaInsidious, Lucius Malfoy, Mafia Moneychanger, "Do try to control yourself. We still have a duty to perform."
Raising their wands in unison, their voices are loud, hard, and cold. "Avada Kedavra!"
Rays of green light burst forth from their wands, smashing into the bodies of Rafaelk, Caractacus Burke, Townie Collector, and Stormblind, Horace Slughorn, Townie Potions Master.
Then they whirl around to face goatrevolt, Delores Umbridge, Neutral Survivor, but he simply hold up his arms, "No need to worry about me. I'll be no trouble." He gives a weak smile, that has all the charm of a toad.
Bellatrix and Lucius eye each other briefly, then shrug their shoulders. "He is not important. What is important is continuing the work of our lord and Master, and preparing the way for his inevitable return."
And from the shadows, comes the horrible rasping sound of laughter.
The Game is Over!
The Mafia and Goatrevolt have won!
Thank you to everyone who played, and congratulations to all the victors, especially loran16 and AlphaInsidious, for successfully executing the fabled "Mason Gambit" and riding it all the way to the very end.
I'll be back later with more notes and roles and thoughts and stuff.

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
Wow. I can't believe you guys pulled that off. Nice job. For self commentary, I'll say that my performance was pretty bad from the get-go. And it's a shame about CP, whatever happened to him. Thanks to Axel for running things out.
More later. This requires a larger post of bragging.

Bravo. Absolutely brilliant, Loran and AI, especially the part about not letting us in on it beforehand. That made our reactions completely genuine.
Things went pretty much as well as could be expected; I felt I was able to distance/trap pretty well while I was alive (all apologies to Ged, but the cost/reward of protecting Dagger and making myself look good for days was too tempting), and Dagger played absolutely solid until he just ran out of trees.
Man! I still can't believe it...
*shakes all other mafioso's hands*
To think that only one simple investigation of one of us would have blown all of this up in our face.
More later, great playing with everyone!

Rafael, how could you have come to the conclusion that StormBlind was more likely to be scum than the masons? Even if you were doing nothing more than trying not to get lynched, you should have realized that going against SB was a losing proposition, and gone after the masons instead. But pushing the idea that SB was scum at all didn't make any sense, based on the game's design, and you knew it. There's no way the scum could have a polyjuice specialist and a polyjuice maker. You knew that loran and Alpha weren't clear, but you decided to ignore the possibility of them being scum even thought they were the only logical choices left. Everyone else can be excused for leaving the masons alone, but you had the info and the perceptiveness to know better.
LORAN WINS A GAME AS MAFIA? WHAT??? I am very surprised by the outcome and all I can say is damn, I was planning to do that, I just havent been mafia recently. Congrats and ya as for my PR, the Quoting part was real and the Voting part was fake.

<hotshizle> i think
I think we need a new rule: any mason pair unrevealed by Day 6 is not what it seems, guaranteed, whether it be a townie being an idiot or two scum making a silly play. I can't think of an example of a mason pair coming out in the endgame, ever. It's a statistical anomaly, for one, because two people are twice the moving target and as soon as one dies the other is actually guaranteed, meaning two town masons surviving to endgame together is ridiculous. It's also dumb for two confirmed townies to not come out earlier to make the town's job easier, and there's no example I can think of where this rule didn't hold true. This game, Magic Mafia, and Blood Moon Mafia (and maybe Douglas Adams, though I'm not sure) are all games in which late mason claims benefited only the mafia.
I think Items are a good idea. I've come around to them a bit, and they currently are featured in the setup I'm working on (with arimnaes, who needs to give me some feedback ahem ahem). The problem I had with their execution in Hats Mafia was that the one-for-one pairing made for rather simplistic gameplay. Here, they provided more of a challenge, but I'm not totally satisfied with their execution here. At some point, I think they will work... one of the things I'm trying to do for this upcoming game is to try to approach PMs and abilities from a different angle for both greater clarity and greater functionality, and hopefully the use of items in that game will achieve that vision.
I'm a bit ticked off that Kraj was town, though my argumentation got really sloppy, because I didn't care. To be honest, I'm tired of mafia. I got saddled with a mediocre role (bad claim, plus who's ever going to give Draco the freaking Elder Wand? Plus, according to CP before he disappeared, the only thing I would have gotten was a daykill, which sucks) and faced a town coming off two inadvertent successes. No offense to Kraj's argumentative skills, which are good, but someone should have thought about that lynch in more abstract terms than "scum tell means scum".
Sad to say that my second-to-last (or third-to-last, I suppose) game went like this. But I guess that's to be expected. This game never really was my thing. (wry grin)
Wow, After reading the mafia discussion thread, I am very surprised that my name came up a lot. Also, I diddnt really notice it, but did you guys ever break a crypto?

The masons in Magic Mafia claimed on Day 2. I'm not sure what Xyre is getting at really. There was a really obviously fake mason claim late in Magic Mafia that was constructed by Chamber(a townie) and is quite possibly the worst play ever in the history of the game..maybe Xyre is thinking of that.

I was talking about Chamber and MMoD, not your mason group. Sorry that wasn't more clear.
Quote from Ged »
Xyre, the masons claimed day 1 here (more or less), so you're rule doesn't much apply.
Really? Huh. I must have forgotten that. That's a crazy gambit on multiple levels then. I suppose it deserves to win just for working. But the rule still applies. Obviously these are minority cases, but late-game mason claims aren't usually townie-townie links.
EDIT: Oh, and AI claimed mason on 13 June, which was around the middle of Day 3. So this rule obviously doesn't apply in the form presented above, but I think mason claims around day 3-4 are at least questionable.
And after eight months of one of the longest games of mafia I have ever been in, it finally ended... with a masons gambit win for us.
Props to both loran and AI for that. I was absolutely flabbergasted when they claimed masons. Like WTF? Really took the rest of the team for a spin.
I think the SK's death on Day 2 really was both a blessing and a curse. While it secured us control of the nightkills and safeguarded both loran and AI, it also gave the town an unprecedented long and multiple days in which to discuss and discuss and discuss, clearing people high and low.
Basically, during the day in which I was lynched, I was trying to distance myself from both loran and AI. Being linked to them behavior-wise was my greatest fear at that point of time. And I thought, why not launched a preemptive attack at the three confirmed "towns" just to make it seemed more genuine?
Props to both DYH and Ged as well, for the entertaining three-way scuffle on Day 1. Well, one of us has to die by that point to "clear" behaviorally at least one of us.
It also helps the town thought we have daytalk and given false claims. It makes the crypto-claims a double-edged sword for the town to wield around.
Wow, After reading the mafia discussion thread, I am very surprised that my name came up a lot. Also, I diddnt really notice it, but did you guys ever break a crypto?
Nope. There was never really a need to. There was at one point during a day relatively early in the game (Day 2, I think) where the townies were rapidly being forced to claim threshold and forced to claim, and we got lots of info from them. Our primary objective was to dig out Sirius Black (Jobie) but then he was one of those being forced to claim on that Day, so the motivation sort of died out.
EDIT: Oh, and AI claimed mason on 13 June, which was around the middle of Day 3. So this rule obviously doesn't apply in the form presented above, but I think mason claims around day 3-4 are at least questionable.
I think they claimed during Day 2, before the SK was lynched. I distinctly remembered being worried about how the SK will take out one of them by tonight, and then found out during the lynch scene that CC was the SK.
EDIT: Also, going into the final night, I thought the correct play was to use the Hat on Rafk and then claimed a guilty result on him, securing us his lynch. That was the reason why I passed the Sorting Hat to loran instead of the Map. I deemed Rafk most likely will use the Polyjuice on one of the masons, making it a simple case in the end of whether the town trust the "masons" or Rafk more. It didn't turn out exactly as I envisioned, but I'm glad things worked out in the end anyway.
EDIT2: Yeah, this is way out of the current topic, but I felt the need to say this anyway. One of the reasons I was so suspicious of DYH in Fiasco was because of the way he went all out on Charm right on Day 1. I have seen with my own eyes how he did it with Ged in this game, and I deemed it more likely DYH was bussing CM in Fiasco judging from his play then. But then I couldn't exactly say "Oh, I knew that because I am scumbuddy with DYH in Harry Potter Mafia, even though the game is still running and we are both still alive. He is a bloody scum!"
Apparently, Prior to this game, he was lacking only but a sheep.
Hooray!
Oh, and god help us both the next time we're in a game together

I'd like to add my name to the list of "I told you sos"
Its a shame that it took a gambit like this for people to realize that it was possible. Just look at how shady Loran was acting in the middle of the game and it was fairly obvious Grats guys.
I had some suspicions, but my best chance of survival was with the mason team, so town or scum, I was all for keeping them alive. I was actually hoping they were scum, so the game would end sooner. If you guys had known I was a neutral survivor, we could have ended the game a day earlier with 3 scum votes and my own.
I can now breath an 8 month long sigh of relief. Thanks for not screwing me over in the end there :). I was shocked I got targeted with the hat. I thought it was going to be RafK for sure, but it actually worked out pretty well.
Scum day 1 mason gambit, wow. I award you both the "Balls to the Wall" award. Impressive! That could have gone very differently for the scum, with Ged/AI being top suspects day 1. It played out in such a way to clear DYH for some time and clear both of you for the entire game, which is pretty spectacular.
Kraj got replaced because a PM was sent to him that was supposed to be sent to me containing information on my role. The PM contained enough information to prove that I certainly was not part of the town.
did you really think there were only 4 mafia in the game?
It didn't matter. 2 scum and a neutral survivor, the scum automatically win just by claiming scum and both voting the same target and having me finish off that target. Either the game was over, or we could assume there was only 1 scum remaining.
Rafael, how could you have come to the conclusion that StormBlind was more likely to be scum than the masons? Let's hear it for hiding behind a gimmick account to razz someone about their play. I feel like I'm on the WoW Official Forums!
- Note that it's possible that the role you received was not identical to the one written here. I think CP might have made a few tweaks to some before sending:
Harry James Potter - You are a legend. Your exploits have made you famous throughout the wizarding world, even from the time you were only a year old. You know you don’t deserve the accolades you’ve received; in fact, they make you uncomfortable. Even more, you know you don’t deserve the hate and reproach of those who resent your fame. However, there are still people out there for whom you and what you now represent are true anathema, and their malice and avarice must be stopped, before they topple the entire wizarding world and declare war on the Muggles.
Right now, you feel like there's no one you can trust, and since you can't seem to find your father's Invisibility Cloak, you have nothing in your possession to help you, but you know there are many people out there who support you in your cause, and many items of great power that will enable your victory. It's just a matter of finding them.
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.

[Starts with: No Item Primary item: Invisibility Cloak]
----------
Hermione Granger – When you were a kid, they said you were a prodigy, but “real” life always seemed so boring, so…easy. When you found out that actually had magical powers, it was like a dream come true. You read everything you could find about the wizarding world, and it was every bit as amazing as you had dreamed. You would do anything to be able to stay in this world, so when Voldemort and his Death Eaters threatened your right to your magic, you knew he had to be stopped.
You recently finished making up a batch of Polyjuice Potion, spending three solid weeks on the project, and you’re sure you can find a use for it in the current fight. You do not, however, have any special abilities in and of yourself (you are, after all, just a student!). You do recall Professor McGonagall talking about an item that she sometimes used when she was extremely busy, called a Time Turner, which has got you thinking ever since. You’d be willing to bet that if you had something like that, you could make awfully good use of it.
For now, you’d better make what use you can of this Potion. If you use it at night, it will turn you into a player of your choice, and you’ll be able to figure out who that player is (rolename). Once you use it, though, it'll be gone, so use it wisely. On the other hand, you could choose to give the Potion away to another player, if you decided you didn't want to use it yourself. The choice is yours.
Item in Possession: Polyjuice Potion
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.
Please confirm via PM.
Polyjuice Potion -Target a player at night. You learn that player's rolename. One-time use.
[-Starts with: Polyjuice Potion -Primary item: Time Turner]
----------
Fred Weasley – Brilliant! It wasn’t that long ago that Harry supplied you and your twin brother with the funds you needed to make your own ‘specialty’ goods shop. And specialty goods are your specialty, if you know what I mean. And lately, people have been taking an interest in them as more than just amusing novelties, too! Specifically, there seems to be interest in your Skiving Snackboxes, which make people sick, but only temporarily, and your Trick Wands, which seem to be useful for incapacitating people when they try to use them.
A good Trick Wand is a lot tougher to make than the Snackboxes; you’d need some help to make one in any kind of timely manner. But the Snackboxes are easy as pie (especially when they look exactly like pies)! You can make one up in a night with no trouble. It’s so easy and quick, you’ll be able to use it on anyone to keep that person sick and unable to move for a few hours, that same night, if you want! You’re also welcome to keep them or give them away as you please, of course.
If George is around to help, you can really get up to some mischief with a good old Trick Wand, which not only will stop anyone from successfully casting a spell at night, but keep them occupied all the next day trying to avoid getting bonked on the head, so they won’t even be able to vote until the magic wears off the next day! This only applies if a person actually tries to use magic, though, so it won’t stop them from doing other stuff, but on the other hand, it doesn’t go bad the way the candy and pastries can, so if they don’t use a spell that night, the effect will carry over until they do. Since Trick Wands are so much tougher to make, you will have to wait until the next night before you find an opportunity to give it away.
Of course, you could also just go see what George is up to, at night. He comes up with some of the most amazing ideas, but he might need some help churning them out quickly enough to matter. If so, you’d be happy to lend a hand. He’s definitely one of the good guys, after all.
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.
You do not currently have any items.
Please confirm via PM.
Each Night you may choose to (1) make a Skiving Snackbox; (2) attempt to make a Trick Wand, for which you will need assistance from George; or (3) assist George with whatever mischief he might be up to. The Snackbox can be given away the same night it is made. The Trick wand may not be given away until the following Night. You know that George is innocent.
Trick Wand
-Target a player at night. That player may not use any abilities that night, though they may still pass items, and they will be prevented from voting the following day. One-time use.
Skiving Snackbox
-Target a player at night. That player may not use any abilities or pass any items that night. One-time use.
George Weasley – You and your brother have never really been ones to go along quietly. If there is ever an opportunity to annoy, frustrate, or otherwise harass the people trying to exercise authority in your life, you take it in a heartbeat. This led to some amazing inventions on your part as you tried for ever-more-provocative and extravagant means of displaying your rebellion, but it wasn’t until Harry came along and donated the funds for your store that it really became a way of life.
Since then, you’ve turned your inventions into a tidy profit, and not just from little kids with a penchant for getting into trouble. Your inventions are, in fact, becoming famous for their defensive uses, throwing truly malicious troublemakers into utter confusion and completely debilitating them. One of your favorite items has been the Fanged Frisbee: originally intended as just a means of creating chaos in the classroom, you’ve now made it able to bounce spells around the room, keeping them from ever being able to hit their target. It’s a minor little trick, not liable to stop anything really powerful, so for the purposes of this little exercise you’re doing now, you don’t imagine they’d be any good for stopping kills. But pretty much any everyday spell would rebound somewhere else, and with some care, you could even use it so it bounced a spell to a particular person. These Frisbees aren’t just one-time use, even. Once you’ve bounced a spell away from a player, they’ll be able to pick the Frisbee up and use it again on someone else. Chaos ensues! The magic will wear off after a second use, though.
Of course, sometimes it’s nice to make things more predictable. Not much more, but a little. Your average Shield Hat can do that just fine, and since you don’t have to spend so much magic on making it ambulatory, you can devote quite a bit more power to the shield itself. This will allow it bounce all but the most powerful spells, if that person is targeted with one. Unfortunately, you’ve never found material that will really make a satisfactory hat and still hold this kind of magic for long, so the effect will wear off shortly after the shield is activated. In this case, the player wearing the hat is the one with control over where the spell ends up, too, so its use generally needs to be quite cautious.
The Frisbees are easy to make; you could one per night quite easily, and keep them, use them, or pass them around as you like that same night. The Shield Hats are a lot tougher, though, and you’d require help to make one in decent time. If Fred were around to help, you could do it, but it would still take until the next night for you to get a chance to give it to someone or use it. Of course, your other option is simply to go over to Fred’s room and see what he’s up to; he’s always up to something tricky, and he might be able to use your genius. Since he’s definitely a good guy, this might be a good way to spend your night sometimes.
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.
You do not currently have any items.
Please confirm via PM.
Each Night you may (1) make a Fanged Frisbee; (2) attempt to make a Shield Hat, for which you will need help from Fred, or (3) assist Fred with whatever mischief he might be planning. The Frisbee may be given away the same Night it is made. The Shield Hat may not be given away until the following Night. You know that Fred is innocent.
Shield Hat -Target a player at night. If that player is targeted with an ability at night, they may choose a new target for that ability. One-time use.
Fanged Frisbee -Target a player at night. If that player is targeted with an ability at night other than a kill, you may choose a new target for that ability. That player will then gain ownership of the Frisbee, and it will gain the characteristic 'One-time use.'
Neville Longbottom – Bellatrix LeStrange didn’t kill your parents, but she may as well have done. Her use of the Cruciatus Curse on them destroyed their minds and left them permanently unable to function as responsible members of society, all when you were only a year old. Your life since then has been one of cringing fear, never able to build the confidence to do anything useful. Your grandmother, a domineering, frightening woman with a very strange hat that always gave you nightmares, raised you. It always felt like her only interest in you was as a Wizard, rather than as a grandson, and since you were never any good at magic, you always felt unappreciated and helpless.
That began to change, slowly, once you entered the halls of Hogwarts, where you discovered that being a cringing incompetent doesn’t mean you can’t be brave, and also that you have a passion for Herbology. You’re determined to do your part in the coming crisis.
Right now, all you have is this little Mandrake plant you got from school. It's very loud, crying constantly, so you keep it in your room at night where it won't disturb discussion, but you know about it's special property: it's capable of knocking someone out completely if they don't have ear protection. You could give someone else the plant at night, if you wanted, but you wouldn't necessarily have to pass along the headgear that should come with it. If you do leave the plant with someone else without giving them some ear protection, they'll be knocked out and unable to do anything until the baby Mandrake gets tired of screaming the next morning. You have no other abilities. You feel that someday, though, if Bellatrix LeStrange were brought to justice, you could come out of your shell and be a real asset in the fight against Voldemort. In preparation for that day, you've been working on your swordplay.
Item in Possession: Baby Mandrake Root
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.
Please confirm via PM.
Baby Mandrake Root -Target a player at night. That player may not use any abilities or pass any items that night, and they will gain ownership of the Baby Mandrake Root.
[-Starting Item: Baby Mandrake Root -Primary Item: Sword of Gryffindor]
----------
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore - You've made a lot of mistakes in your long life, and as a result a lot of people have caused a lot of harm thanks to your support. You've been blinded by friendship, by greed, by lies, and the harm thus wrought has hurt you terribly. You can only hope to make restitution by stopping and destroying the evils that your carelessness has allowed into the world. Fortunately, there are two people in this world that you trust: Harry Potter and Severus Snape. You are firmly determined to ignore that voice of self-doubt that's been nagging at you lately, that maybe your judge of character has not improved over time, and that this campaign against evil will not end so neatly as you've hoped.
Nevertheless, you are determined to do what you can to defeat Voldemort. You have a secret weapon from your younger days: the Elder Wand is in your possession, and being the selfless soul you are these days, you can use it to help those around you to new heights of power. Each night, you may target a player and the Elder Wand will give that playter a magical boost. Alternately, you can choose to pass the Elder wand to another player in lieu of using it. Also, if you could find your pet pheonix, Fawkes, it would really aid you in your efforts. He seems to have gone missing.
Item in Possession: The Elder Wand
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.
Please confirm via PM.
The Elder Wand
-Target a player at night. That player will be given the option to use another ability that night. You lose ownership of the Elder Wand.
[-Starting Item: Elder Wand -Primary Item: Fawkes the Phoenix]
----------
Severus Snape - You don't have much respect for the people you work with. Most of them are hypocrites. Nearly all of them are pathetic at the use of magic. Not a one of them has the curiosity about the arcane to make it more than just a fantastic way to make life more convenient for themselves. The power that magic offers to those who want it is lost on the so-called "good guys." Nearly everyone who comes to Hogwarts is only interested in the cosmetic, the fun, the luxury. Your contempt for those hedonistic popinjays knows no bounds, and it would please you to no end to see every one of them stripped of their pride and forced to kneel before someone who really understood what magic is all about.
The worst of them all, of course, are the Mudbloods, those filthy Muggles who somehow managed to steal a mite of magic from those with a right to it. That's why it astonishes you, in deepest part of your soul, so deep that you aren't even aware that you're capable of being honest with yourself, that you managed to fall in love with one. And even though she rejected you and took instead the subject of one of your most bitter feuds, a man you hated with every fiber of your being, you couldn't stop loving her. And when your actions led to her death, you knew that it would never be possible for you to get what you wanted out of life, that a world devoid of Muggles or epicures would also eradicate her legacy.
So while everything in you screams that Voldemort is right and worthy to win this fight, you will do what you can to stop him and keep Lily Potter's legacy alive.
That said, it would be a shame if your brilliance were wasted on wasted on making potions which would only be used for the shallow uses those pathetic Gryffindor sycophants can come up with, and so what if the deeper uses benefit the "good guys" not at all? You may be working for the status quo right now, but it can't be your fault if the "bad guys" are cleverer than your allies, right?
As a potions master, you have the capacity to make numerous types of potions:
-Polyjuice Potion: the Polyjuice Potion allows a player to pick another player, and transform into the image of that player for one Night. This has the benefit of allowing the player to learn the identity of his target (role-name). Of course, there might be some unfortunate side-effects of becoming someone else for a Night (especially if someone were trying to kill your target), so best be careful who you pick.... -Felix Felicis: The Felix Felicis potion has the effect of making the user immune to negative effects for one Day/Night cycle. They cannot be lynched, they cannot be Night killed, they can't have anything "bad" happen to them, period. This potion is extremely tricky to make so you can only make it one time during the game. -Wolfsbane: The Wolfsbane potion is designed for Werewolves. If you choose to make it, it will automatically be passed along to another player. That player can take the potion to become immune to some of the negative effects of being a Werewolf, and can even cure an individual newly infected with the disease if it's taken soon enough. The effects of this potion last for 2 day/night cycles. Don't worry, though, about hurrying with this. Something bad will happen if you don't make it least every two days (starting Night 2), but not as long as you stay diligent. -Unctuous Unction: This potion will make someone trust the user absolutely for the night, so they'll allow the user into the target's room and talk things over at night. In other words, the user may pick a player and gain the temporary ability to communicate at Night with that player. This effect will wear off after one Night.

Polyjuice Potion
-Target a player at night. You learn that player's rolename. One-time use.

Remus Lupin - You are a Werewolf. You've lived most of your life in seclusion, due to the effects of the disease you carry. You've been lonely and miserable and you hardly know how to expect anything different at this point, but you do know one thing: you cannot let Voldemort and his followers destroy the lives of the few friends you've managed to make in this world. Lycanthropy is feared and with good reason, but you've been assured by those that gathered you here that your sickness will not be passed on to anyone else in the town, as long as you act responsibly, and kill the scum quickly. As a sign of good faith, they've given you a vial of Wolfsbane which will keep the effects of your disease under control for the first two days. After that, they've promised to come back with more. Wolfsbane can cure newly infected werewolves, but you're much too far along for it to do more than just ease the symptoms. Regardless, it will allow you to keep control long enough to deal with the issue at hand, if you're careful, so use it as soon as you can. As such, you have decided to lend your meager talents to the task of hunting down and destroying Voldemort's cult once and for all.
You do have one additional item to aid you in your cause, a Time Turner. This hourglass-shaped pendant, when used carefully, allows you to manipulate the streams of time, doubling back upon yourself. The effect of this is that you may make your vote count double for one game day (PM the moderator when you wish to activate this Item). After it has been used, however, it must be passed away the following night to a player of your choice.

Wolfsbane
-Use at night to prevent yourself from losing control every two days. One-time use.
Time Turner
-Use during daytime to give yourself an extra vote during the remainder of the day. Target a player. That player will gain ownership of the Time Turner.
[Remus is the recipient of Snape's Wolfsbane. Does not know this unless Snape's potions dry up (each potion lasts for a Day/Night/Day/Night cycle). If they do, Lupin must target a player. If he does not, the target will be selected at random. The targeted player will become a Werewolf, though this effect can be cured if wolfsbane is administered within the first two cycles. Werewolves cannot give or receive items while in Werewolf form.
-Starting Item: Time Turner, Wolfsbane Primary Item: Wolfsbane -If Wolfsbane is not taken within 2 days of the last dose, Lupin will be forced to target a player. That player will become a werewolf, and will be subject to all the restrictions and requirements Lupin has, with the exception that Wolfsbane will cure them if they take it within two days. -Cannot give or receive items while in werewolf form.]

Sirius Black - Twelve years in prison. Twelve years in prison. Twelve years of having every happy thought sucked out of your head the instant it arose. And no chocolate. You think you can probably be excused for going a little bit crazy. Voldemort, though, is insane. Criminally, violently, inexcusably insane. And he will not live through this trial. You lay down your vow, right now, that Voldemort and all his followers will die terrible deaths for their crimes. Especially Peter. If you could get Peter lynched, you think you might be able to calm down a little bit.
As a child, you learned the magic of transfiguring yourself into a dog. You did this mostly so you could be friends with a werewolf, but it's turned out to be pretty useful since then, as well. As an animagi, your sense of smell is especially sensitive to the auras of magical items, and you can track those auras, if you have the scent. Every night, if you know about an item, you can find out who has it. You know about any item that has passed through your own hands, or that has been used on you. If you aren't tracking a specific item, you could always just sniff a player and find out if they have any item at all instead (but you won't necessarily learn what the item is).

Rita Skeeter - This is quite a sensational opportunity for you, the most sensational reporter who always has the most sensational news. The fact that this is because you mostly make up your own stories has very little to do with it. Really.
See, the thing that makes your stories so great is that they're partially rooted in fact. You can spy on people by transforming into a Beetle (Shhh! nobody knows this!) and gather all kinds of sensational information. And if you put it all together in a way that most would consider libel, well, it's their decision to take offense. After all, your heart is in the right place, and you certainly wouldn't want those nasty Death Eaters taking over, would you?
There is the teensiest problem with you being here, among all these all-stars. They all hate you, and are generally willing to do something about it if you make them angry. So you're going to have to be careful and hang back with your investigations. But you can still use your Beetle form to spy on people, as long as you do it from a long ways away. As an animagi, you have an affinity for things with strong magical auras, so even from a distance, it will be easy for you, any night you feel like it, to detect how many items are moving from place to place. It might be a little tough to tell what those items are, though, when you can never get close.

Horace E.F. Slughorn - Your entire life has been spent in the pursuit of influence. Not public influence; that has never interested you in the slightest! No. You're a peddler in favors. Making friends is all about knowing what people can do for you, and it's important to be far-sighted in the process. You judged that Voldemort, for example, was not a good friend to have, being sadistic and evil, despite the fact that you had spent a great deal of time cultivating Tom Riddle to take you to the top. Voldemort fell, eventually, as you knew he would, but now he's back and worse than ever, and now it's far too late for you to change sides. So you've chosen to do what you can to make sure Voldemort doesn't make you regret your decision.
Your specialty is, of course, Veritaserum. But you couldn't make that here; oh no! The reason for this difficulty is that Veritaserum takes far too long to make to be practical in the small time-frame that you have here. It's easy to be confident in your abilities, but you must still allow for what simply is not possible. But you did bring along what you had on hand, useful as it is.
As a potions master, you have the capacity to make numerous types of potions:
-Veritaserum: This potion is very handy for determining where someone's allegiances lie. A simple "Do you support Voldemort's cause?" and you've caught a bad guy! Too bad you didn't have more of it handy... -Polyjuice Potion: the Polyjuice Potion allows a player to pick another player, and transform into the image of that player for one Night. This has the benefit of allowing the player to learn the identity of his target (role-name). Of course, there might be some unfortunate side-effects of becoming someone else for a Night (especially if someone were trying to kill your target), so best be careful who you pick. If you choose to make it, you may pass it along to another player. That player can take the potion to become immune to some of the negative effects of being a Werewolf, and this Potion can even cure an individual newly infected with the disease if it's taken soon enough. The effects of this potion last for 2 day/night cycles. -Babbling Beverage: This mischievious little Potion inflicts a posting restriction on your target. The posting restriction may be any one of your choice. Negative consequences ensue for any player violating his posting restriction.
Win Condition: Eliminate the forces of Evil.

Mundungus Fletcher - 'Ere now, there's no way you were going to miss an event such as this. There's a great chance, as you might say, for profit, in a battle between good and evil. Both sides are bringing everything they have to the table, and that means equipment such as you've never gotten yer 'ands on before, and likely never again. 'Course, you ain't a fool. 'E 'oo must not be named has no interest in summin' keeping stuff wif value out o' 'is grubby paws, or coils, more'n likely, being the Slytherin that 'e is, so you've gotta job to do keeping him from rising to power. 'Course, that doesn't mean you won't be looking for a little bonus for your work. There's Galleons to be had, and you're gonna make sure they're in the right hands as soon as possible.
Bein' the practiced thief that you are, you're comfortable lightening a person's load durin' the day, but it'll have to wait until night, when you're well away from the others, to pull out what it was you lifted and find out what it's good for.

Nymphadora Tonks - The battle against the Death Eaters has been a long one and is far from over yet. As an Auror it has long been your mission to hunt dark wizards for the Ministry of Magic. More recently as a member of the Order of the Phoenix you have faced tougher challenges still. Now even the Ministry cannot be trusted and you are more or less working on your own. The stress is starting to get to you and, as a metamorphmagus, that's having an effect on your appearance. You've aged ten years in the last month and your once bright pink hair is now mousy brown.
Still, just because you can't trust anyone that doesn't mean they can't trust you. You'll protect them if you can. Of course, you can't be everywhere at once so each night you'll face a difficult choice as to who you should watch over.
You do have one ace up your sleeve. Thanks to a certain amount of foresight you have managed to get hold of the Sorting Hat. Get it onto someone's head and what it has to say for itself should give you a valuable clue to their nature. Of course, the chances are you won't be able to get it back after that, so you're saving it for when you need it most.

Peeves - You are the mischievous poltergeist who torments Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You love to cause trouble, to disrupt the activities of others, to make noise and mess and most of all to have fun at the expense of others. All that said, you do love Hogwarts. It's your home after all. And you sort of like the wizards there. After all, with nobody to tease your life would be awfully dull.
All this hoo-ha with He Who Must Not Be Named and his Death Eaters isn't really your idea of fun. Not only do none of these Death Eater types have a sense of humor, but it's left everyone else in such a serious mood that none of them are much fun anymore either. It's even making you feel a bit sad.
You've come up with a good game to lift your mood, though. Whenever you quote anything anyone else says, you plan to incorrectly attribute it to someone else. And to make the game more fun, you have resolved to ignore any discussion of this habit and not to let anyone know you are doing it.
Right now all this poltergeisting around has made you rather thirsty. What you really need is a good, big drink of babbling beverage. Maybe someone's got a bottle of it lying around?

CaractacusBurke - Co-Founder of Borgin and Burkes, an extremely reputable business establishment if you do say so yourself. Your location in Knockturn Alley is merely a means of keeping out the riffraff and Mudbloods. Magical items are your passion. And so what if certain, uneducated individuals can't seem to appreciate the beauty and worth of some of your more, ah, unusual pieces of merchandise, They can always take their business elsewhere, can't they? But you're not a bad man. You certainly don't want those nasty Death Eaters ruling the roost. That wouldn't be any good for business; in fact, since Tom Riddle made off with a hefty piece of your collection all those years ago, you feel sure that he'd happily confiscate everything of worth you've ever managed to find, and not give you a penny in return. You'll do what you can to keep him from upsetting the status quo.
You are always looking to increase your collection, but you're perfectly willing to pay a fair price for your acquisitions. See here, you have this Sack of Galleons, ready and waiting to be traded for another item of interest. Should you so choose, you could pick any player at night and swap your Galleons for whatever item they might currently be holding.
In addition, your collection currently includes one other item, a beautiful Sword. The Sword of Goddrick Gryffindor himself, some say. Great power it has, great enough to destroy any other item it comes into contact with, should you choose to so target a player with it. Of course, if you did that, you'd have to leave the Sword behind afterwards. People might trace it back to you, and you certainly don't want to get involved with the "authorities."

Draco Malfoy - Mudbloods. Muggles. Potter. These are just a few of the things you detest. Your family was loyal to Lord Voldemort. Your father served him. You wished to serve him, too. You thought this would gain you power. You thought this would gain you respect.
You were wrong.
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named used you. He used your family. He wanted you to do his dirty work for him, but in the end, you saw through him. Now, to protect your family, you'll work with those you detest. You won't like it, but you'll do it. If only you had some means of fighting back. You've heard the legends of the Elder Wand, an Item of unimaginable power. If only you could get your hands on that, you know you could accomplish great things. Finally then, you might get the respect you deserve. But for now, you'll just have to hold your nose, and get to the task at hand.

Argus Filch - You are the caretaker at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To your lasting irritation, you are a "squib" - that is to say, your magical skills are nonexistent. You find the best way to relieve the stress this causes you is to take it out on misbehaving students... and fortunately there are no shortage of those at Hogwarts!
The other thing you love doing is confiscating stuff. You can't use magical items of course, but so long as they're safe in your pockets nobody else can use 'em either! Ha! Right now you have three curious artifacts about your person which you decided not to lock in your cupboard. One's a largish marble designed to look like an eye, which seems a little too creepy to let out of your sight. There's also one of those shiny little balls the wizards use for their strange ball game. You just like throwing and catching it. Takes your mind off irritating students. Lastly, there's a rather fancy looking broomstick, appears to be made of ash. Even has a fancy little registration number on it and everything.
You know your way around the castle like nobody else. Even magic is no match for your limitless store of shortcuts and hiding places. Unfortunately this business with He Who Must Not Be Named and his allies the Death Eaters has you a bit out of your depth. Although come to think of it the Evil One was a student here once. You'll do your bit to bring him to justice and then he'll really learn the meaning of discipline.

Quote from Bateleur »
Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
You are the Death Eaters who will finally bring Voldemort to the peak of unassailable power! Your number consists of 5 people, which may not seem like that many, but each of you has powers which mean that your chances of victory are much greater. Of course, your greatest asset is the fact that no one knows your true allegiance, so take care to guard that fact from those who would stop you.
On any night, you may collectively use one of the following abilities in addition to your regular, individual abilities. Each of the following three abilities may only be used once in the game.
Collective Ability: The Unforgivable Curses
-Avada Kedavra (single unstoppable kill)
-Imperius Curse (pick a player and they use their ability on another player)
-Cruciatus Curse (role-block + that player loses any native ability they have)
Additionally, one of you may choose to go out each night among your enemies and kill one them. This will prevent that member from using any abilities they have, but will not prevent them from passing items.
Your true names are Disrupt_Your_Hymn, loran16, Ged, AlphaInsidious, and Dagger. Now go! and ensure the domination of the wizarding world, and the destruction of all Muggles!
Tom “Voldemort” Marvolo Riddle - The time is almost at hand. You, Voldemort, the most feared wizard in history and last surviving descendant of Salazar Slytherin will soon rule over all wizards unopposed and for eternity! Such is your dark power that no wizard alive dares to speak your name. None, that is, save for your arch enemy Harry Potter. And yet you no longer believe the prophecy that he will one day defeat you. Indeed, he is only a boy, his feeble skills no match for your arcane might!
Your allies the Death Eaters serve you well. And well they might, for all who oppose you will be crushed without mercy.
In the coming battle you have a secret weapon - death itself cannot hold you back! You are capable of hiding fragments of your soul in special enchanted vessels known as Horcruxes. Whenever you kill one of your enemies this strengthens your spirit sufficiently that you may take an item in your possession and imbue it with your essence, then cast it out into the world as a Horcrux to be picked up by some innocent. In this way your influence over those who would defy you can be made even stronger: anyone in possession of one of them will not be able to use or give away any items other than the one thus imbued. When sufficiently many such enchanted items exist you may use them to return yourself to life once again. Death to you is nothing more than a brief setback. Indeed, you may even speak to the living whilst in your grave, taunting them as you wait for the hour of your victory!
Additionally, if you manage to come into possession of any of your Horcruxes again, you will find that time has tempered them to your use, and they will have additional powers to aid you in your conquest of the Wizarding world!
Win Condition: Eliminate all who are not your followers.
You do not currently have any items.

If you are killed, you may still post as long as there is a Horcrux still in the game. If the number of Horcruxes equals or exceeds the number of non-mafia players in the game, you will automatically be revived. You may turn any item into a Horcrux when you make a kill, as long as a member of the mafia or the target of the kill owns it. If you choose an item that player owns, that item will not be destroyed as normal. No matter who owns the item to start, it will be given to a random non-mafia player once the kill resolves. That item will gain the characteristic 'Horcrux,' which will be included in the item description. A player in possession of a Horcrux may not use any item other than the Horcrux; if multiple Horcruxes are owned by the same player, they may choose between them.
[-Starting Item: None -Primary Item: Any Horcrux -May post while dead if there are still any Horcruxes in the game. -Will be brought back to life if the number of Horcruxes equals or exceeds the number of living non-mafia players.]

Lucius Malfoy – Malfoy. Yours is one of the oldest and most respected names in all the Wizarding World. At least, it should be. Year after year, more and more half-breeds and impure continue to enter society, and year after year, it seems as though your influence wanes. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named will change all that. The Dark Lord knows the worth of the Pure, and detests the impure as much as yourself. He will cleanse the world. And his servants will be rewarded. Nothing and no one can be allowed to interfere with his plans, not even members of your own family.
Fortunately, wealth still has it's privileges. You possess a Sack of Galleons with which you may attmept to acquire an item from another player. Target a player at Night with the Sack, and you will trade it for whatever item they might have in their possession, whether they wish to trade or not. Of course, they'll end up with the Sack, but you can't have everything. At least not yet.

Peter Pettigrew - Better known as "Wormtail", you are one of Lord Voldemort's loyal Death Eaters. Loyal if nothing else because you're far too scared to betray him. At a young age you learned the arts of the Animagus and are capable of transforming yourself into a rat. Indeed, this skill saved your life when you were cornered by your enemy Sirius Black - you escaped in rat form, leaving him to take the blame for the murders you had committed. He was thrown into the prison of Azkaban.
For many years you pretended to be a pet rat belonging to the Weasley family in order to spy for Voldemort. When your cover was eventually blown it was only good luck that enabled you to escape. Now at last the final struggle approaches. Perhaps when Lord Voldemort is finally victorious the other Death Eaters will finally show you some respect for your service to him?
As a rat it's easy to scurry around unnoticed when you need to. As an animagus, you are highly sensitive to magical auras in rat form, and because of this you are able to sniff out any enchanted items that a person may be carrying. It's a talent that can come in very handy. You can also sniff out cheese. That has its uses too. A rat's got to eat, after all!
You also know that Ms. McGonagall, one of Ron's favorite teachers, has been deliberately kept away from this convergence, and with a little bit of careful costume control, you may be able to convince other people that your rat form looks rather a lot like her cat, albeit smaller than most people remember.
Finally, you've got one additional Item in your possession - a lovely Map. Created by yourself and your former friends in your youth, this Map allows you to search for other roles in the town. Call out a name, and the Map will reveal whether or not that person is present (it won't, of course, tell you who that person is; the Map only knows people's identites, ask it for a carrion pigeons or an Axelrod or a Dagger, and it won't have a clue). Once you use the power of the Map, however, you must surrender the map to fate.

Marauder's Map -Say the name of a Harry Potter character. You will learn if that character is in the game.
Most of the people who have been enlisted into the Dark Lord's army have done so out of fear or avarice. And most of them are stodgy and old. Voldemort is more than just a banner to rally around these days, though. He was so attractive back in the old days, and even now, he's got this amazing charisma; you can't believe that people would oppose him at all.
But even then, it goes deeper than that for you. Voldemort is your one true love, and you will do anything to help him reach his dreams. You'll sneak into the greatest fortress against Voldemort ever raised, and even into the office of the only wizard Voldemort ever feared, and steal his most prized possession. You'll take that stupid pheonix and chain it up, so that the "good" guys never get it. You'll kill for him. You'll die for him.
Of course, you know somewhere in the back of your mind, that the stupid Phoenix is probably useful for something, but that's not why you took it. The thing was hard enough to catch the first time; if you let it out to do it's thing for you, you probably wouldn't be able to catch it again.
Of course, you're the first to admit that you're a little psychotic. Generations of inbreeding will do that to you. Killing and dying are not exactly such unpleasant things, in your mind; in fact, you tend to get a little overenthusiastic when you get to kill people who particularly irritate you. For example, that stupid cousin of yours, Sirius Black. You've been waiting for years for a shot at him for his betrayal of everything the Family Black ever stood for. If you could get him dead, you'd be out partying with a killing spree such as even those other stodgy, boring Death Eaters can't imagine.
Regardless, Voldemort is going to win this little engagement, and then there will be nothing in the world to stop him! Wheeee!!!

Barty Crouch, Jr. - Imprisoned in the inescapable prison of Azkhaban for your evil deeds it seemed as though you would spend the rest of your life rotting in your cell there. But then, you were given a second chance. Your dying mother's last wish was that you be freed and so she persuaded your father to allow her to visit you in prison and she brought with her a Polyjuice Potion. Using it she and you switched places. She died in your cell and was buried as you, freeing you to walk the world once more.
Now Lord Voldemort has chosen you amongst all of his Death Eaters to be his agent. You must not fail him!
Heheh... and indeed you will not, since with the aid of your Polyjuice Potion nobody will even recognise you! Already you have used it to disguise yourself as Mad-Eye Moody, a lecturer at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And yet that is only the beginning of its power. Should anyone come to suspect you then you need only choose another to impersonate. Once you've copied them you'll find out soon enough who they are and then you can collect their mail, take their seat at high table, walk in their boots amongst the great and the good and nobody will ever know. The Neutrals
Ginny Weasley - You are the youngest child of Arthur and Molly Weasley and a pupil at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Your life is a tricky place at the moment what with schoolwork and your older siblings and, not least, your fondness for a young wizard by the name of Harry Potter. Even at such a young age, he's one of the most famous wizards in the world. And he's so kind and noble and... he's going to be yours one day.
The one thing which helps you deal with your troubles is the magical diary you found. You entrust all your deepest secrets to it and... it talks things over with you. You don't know what you'd do without it. You're a bit worried, because the diary is a Horcrux - a magical vessel containing a little bit of its original owner's soul - that might mean someone will try to take it from you!
But you have ways of dealing with people who cause trouble for you. There's this basilisk that does what you say (or at least what the diary says). And surely nothing could last long against a basilisk!
Your one great fear is that all this will be discovered. To this end, you have formed a plan. Any night when you think you might risk getting caught you can give the diary to someone else - without telling them all about it of course. You'd rather not have to, but it would certainly be better than having all your plans exposed.
Soon all this will be over, you keep telling yourself. Yes, the diary agrees, when everyone is dead.
Item in Possession: Riddle's Diary.
Win Condition: Eliminate all other players.
Please confirm via PM.
At night, you may choose a player to kill. If your alignment is investigated, you show up as innocent.
Riddle's Diary - Horcrux -Kills are unblockable, and you are immune to the mafia's nightkill. You turn up guilty to investigations. You may not pass this item away at night if you make a kill during the same night. You may not use any other items.
Delores Umbridge - This whole "campaign against Voldemort" thing is so ridiculous. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named isn't back. That'd be silly. And if there's anything you can't abide, it's silliness.
Unfortunately, your attempts to beat this fact into the heads of many of the people around you have not had quite the effect you'd expect, and they seem to have turned on you. You, of course, are a member of the government, and are not subject to stupidity of the outside world, and mostly especially the stupidity of the world's children. In fact, if there's anything you can't abide, it's children. And stupidity.
Of course, you do still have the privileges of government position to fall back on, even if you can't seem to drill the truth into these people's minds. You have received permission to create three different Educational Decrees, each of which will have an effect lasting for a day. They should be plenty to keep you from being subjected to these folks obsessions. If there's anything you can't abide, it's close-mindedness.
Dear Fudge isn't going to let you die out here, though, no matter how things go. You also have a small cadre of Dementors (whose effects are held off by your marvelous Patronus skills, of course) who will be able to keep you from being lynched, unless at least 2/3 of the remaining people want you dead. There's not much to be done, then. Of course, they'd have to be pretty silly to make such an egregious error.
-Educational Decrees:
-Choose 3 people to pick the lynch.
-Set a XXX post limit for the day.
-Make a player unlynchable that day (including youself).
You also have this tacky Invisibility robe that you confiscated from that poor, misguided Harry Potter. It'll give you some much-needed ability to spy on other people, out here, away from most of your resources.
Win Condition: Survive until the end of the game.
Please confirm via PM.
Any time during the day, as long as no other decree is active, you may PM a choice of one of Educational Decrees 1-3 to activate for the remaining duration of that day. Each decree may only be used once.
It takes a 2/3 majority to lynch you.
Invisibility Cloak -Target a player at night. You will learn who that player targeted that night, but you will lose ownership of the Cloak.

You gain ownership of that item.
Baby Mandrake Root -Minor Ability (Starts with Neville): roleblock a player at night + item passes to target -Primary Ability (Anyone): After Day 4, any player who keeps the Mandrake Root through a night will die + giving the Mandrake Root to a player protects them from SK (basilisk) kills.

I'm going to take this moment to give out some thank yous -
bateleur - I know CP recruited him to help write some of the role PMs, and he did his usual impressive job. CP may have recruited other people I don't know about, so if you are one of those people, thank you too!
-bataleur gets a , however, for running Hats Mafia right before our game. I mean, seriously, we've been discussing this game (off and on) for literally almost a year, and right before it starts, he runs a game that scoops one of our most original mechanics. Talk about bad timing.
arimnaes - after CP left, I had no ability to edit the Title or first game post. arimnaes has been doing this for me for months, so THANK YOU very much again.
Kraj - who was extremely gracious in bowing out when I sent a PM to him by mistake which was intended for goatrevolt.
The PM basically laid out goatrevolt's whole role, without specifically stating his alignment, but it was clear that goatrevolt had been misleading the town, and it would have been unfair to him for Kraj to stay in.
My replacements - this game was a bear to replace into, and I want to thank everyone who agreed to do it, especially those who volunteered to replace very late in the game. That's a tough job under any circumstances, and I think tougher here. So no criticisms of them please, only thanks.
I do not know what happened to CP. The last game Night before he disappeared, Night 3, the one that lasted a week, he did mention that there were at least 2 crisis taking up a lot of his time, but he didn't elaborate beyond that. I hope things are okay for him as well.

We thought that the primary ability mechanic just removed the "After using this item it goes to a random player" restriction, so while we talked about giving dyh the elder wand, we never actually did so.
Errr, oops? Double killing mafia out the window.

I love Joboman, Poggy, Niv, and Vezok, because, while they may not be the best players, they still try to win. Having fun is the most important thing to a game, but I've learned that if you don't try to win, then you're ruining everyone else's fun.
I don't know how interested people are in hearing stories about the design of this game. CP and I really approached it from two different angles. As I said to him once, to put it in Magic terms, he's very much a "Top Down" kind of designer - he has an initial idea about what kind of game he wants, what kind of "feeling" it should have, and then makes roles that fit into the grand scheme. I'm much more of a "Bottom Up" designer - tending to make individual roles which seem interesting to me and flavorful with the character, and then, when I've got a bunch of roles, do a lot of addition and subtraction until I get a balance that seems about right to me. This led to many differences of opinion about what was the right way to go with a certain role. We both liked the idea of an Item based game though.
The long and short of it is that if there was something you liked about the game - that was my idea. And any parts you didn't like were all his
This game was a long time in the making - as I said, CP and I were talking about it for an entire year before it ran - and yet, for all that, the game ended up being a bit rushed into production right at the end, when the two people in line in front of us both dropped out somewhat abruptly. This led to some interactions not being fully fleshed out or developed, and a few errors.
The Umbridge PM is a good example of this. The "Educational Decree" that says she can put an XXX post limit on the day was not supposed to say "XXX." That was just my placeholder until we had figured out exactly how much we wanted her to be able to limit discussion. In fact, the whole role ended up working differently from how I had intended. I always thought the Educational Decrees should be Night choices, i.e. Umbridge would decide each Night whether or not to use one, and if so, the Decree would be posted in the morning scene along with the other Night results. That way, it would force the player to make a decision each Night, without knowing whether or not they were going to be in trouble the next day, creating some tension. Rather than what happened, which is that the player could simply wait, and always use them at the most opportune moment. Made the Role much easier to play, though I give full credit to goatrevolt for never garnering much suspicion and getting himself into a position where he had to use one to save himself, instead, simply using them to "prove" he had the abilities he was claiming. Incidentally, this was probably the most hybrid role of all those we made, being almost equal parts CP's and my design.
By far the role we discussed most was the Voldemort role. We had a lot of trouble coming up with something that we both thought was at least an okay concept.
Many, many aspects of the game which never came into play at all, which was not unexpected. No player ever got his hands on his "Primary" Item. The "Deathly Hallows" certainly never all got into a single player's hands. The Werewolf died early and never had to bite anyone. Voldemort never got a Horcrux into his hands, and obviously his "Resurrection" trigger didn't happen.
We had lots and lots of discussion about what different items should do, and who should have what for a Primary Item, and who should start the game with what item. I was enormously concerned about the early Mass Claim breaking the game, since all the Mafia were obvious scum, so we tried to put a few shady and unexpected roles in the town, left out a few major ones (Ron, Hagrid, etc.), and gave the Mafia a few starting Items that a Mafia "shouldn't" have had, such as Fawkes. I guess this worked since no one questioned the claims of being paintings.
The Mafia had to play through a lot of adversity, and in hindsight the Mason claim was incredibly fortuitous for them, because it meant that (1) players kept passing them Items - because they were "confirmed" and (2) no one ever bothered to check either one of them, despite the amount of Polyjiuce Potion that was floating around the game.
Another interesting point about the "Masons," from a Modding perspective, was how we were to handle the Night actions. At the beginning, you see, CP wrote lots of PMs which simply had players bumping into each other in the hallways, passing items hand to hand, etc. But obviously you shouldn't be "bumping" into a painting in the middle of the Night. And if we wrote a Night PM like that, would it give away the truth? Which raises the issue of how much Mods must honor and work around the false claims of Mafia. This didn't end up being too much of an issue (there were times we had players leaving items on doorsteps instead of passing them hand to hand, and we did this for people who didn't claim to be paintings as well, etc.) but I was always concerned about being made an unwilling party to the scum false claims. If anyone had ever said anything about believing the claims because, in the Night result PMs, they never saw an actual physical body on either of them, I would have felt very sad and guilty.
Chimpanzee almost used his Shield Hat the Night he was killed (and he was going to re-direct to Goatrevolt) which would have left 3 townies vs. the 2 Mafia on the last day, but instead, he chose to Polyjuice Raf. Considering how the last day went though, I don't think this would have changed anything.
I might try to compile the complete list of Night actions if people are interested. It's kind of long though....

This game would probably have been broken early by a mass claim. In fact it was, by the crypto claim.
If anyone wonders, the mafia privately complained that the crypto claims were broken, and that's why they were banned JUST after this game used them.
And it screwed the scum. We had two false claims, but one was crap (Moody by Barty Crouch, duh), and Mcgonagall. Yet false name claims can only do so much, and being forced to make your false role claim early was ridiculously limiting, and screwed Ged and DYH obviously.
And since the mafia had day 1 (but no other day) daytalk, me and AI who suck at mafia and claiming in general, decided what the heck.
No Kidding. The experienced players all were unlikely to target us, but we were scared ****less about some one or spotofprey, who're knew around here, seeing through our insane claims.
Also i was worried at being targetted by someone who could detect items (or being galleonsed). I held Fawkes, the doc item the entire game, but no one ever found out.

This needs to be talked about in the mafia theory section. How much flavor can one give in an ability result? I almost feel like there needs to be mod announcements ahead of time so that players can play around it, cuz early claims put the mods in bad positions that they don't want to be in, or it could put a mafia in a bad position due to something they had no clue whatsoever about.
Incidentally, just because i've always wanted to, I'm putting mafia mvp in my sig just for the sheer irony of it. :-P
EDIT: NOTE: Leaving out characters for scum to claim is no longer as effective as it once was. It worked imo in LotR mafia back in the day because the town had several vanilla-named characters. But when every player is a named character and the mafia has few good name claims, it's just an invitaiton for disaster.

Let's hear it for hiding behind a gimmick account to razz someone about their play. I feel like I'm on the WoW Official Forums!
I don't mean to razz anyone about their play, really. I'm just saying, it was Raf's post that convinced me that if he really isn't scum, then there's no way that loran and Alpha could be town. And I honestly thought Raf was going to realize this and save the game, but he apparently decided to ignore what he himself wrote. I was astonished, is all, that he didn't make a leap of logic when it was RIGHT there to be made, in his own post. It wouldn't have made a difference, with goatrevolt siding with the masons no matter what.

I'm still quite confused why you used a gimmick to post this. There is no reason why you should need to hide to make such comments.
Mind, revealing yourself? You might need to make another gimmick, but you shouldn't have used one to talk in this way anyhow.

Ugh. It would really be nice to win a game of mafia once in a while...
I have to applaud Loran and AI for pulling off the win via sheer balls. But at the same time a lot of things irritate me. For one, AI was scummy scummy scummy the whole damn game and completely vanished when the spoltight was off of him. Loran started out looking town, but immediately got scummier once he was "confirmed". Yet, nobody bothered to use any kind of investigation on either of them. Gah.
And along those lines, I'm going to call "bastard mod" on one thing: giving BT a potion called "Poisonous Poison" that has the effect of giving night talk. That was the primary reason I felt BT's claim may have been a lie and why I decided to use my one-shot investigation on him. If it hadn't been for that, I would have investigated AI.
I'm also frustrated in how my polyjuice potion plan worked out. Clearly the way to maximize the town's investigative power was to make a polyjuice every night and pass it. The problem was it left the possibility of passing it to mafia (which happened once), and it meant I had to trust others to use it wisely, which no one did. If I had kept them to myself the number of investigations would have been halved, but again AI would have been caught.
I'm not sure I would have made a different call on the last day, because Raf's pish against me/SB was full of so many obviously wrong arguments I probably would have read it as a desperate push against the only other possible player to lynch. But.... HOW THE HECK DID NO ONE KNOW HOW OBVIOUS IT WAS THAT BELLATRIX LESTRANGE WAS IN THE GAME? Snape's death scene made it abundantly clear who did it. Grrrr.
In general, I really did not like how many items had the effect to randomly changed hands when you use it. Granted, it goes a long way to quash breaking the setup and creates an interesting risk/reward tension but it results in a lot of chaos and immensely increases the information advantage the mafia has.
In general I'm happy with the way I played despite how things works out. The only mislynch I really feel bad about was JodoYodo; that was just sheer stupidity from the town. As far as Xyre's lynch went, by the time his lynch was nearing I was pretty convinced he was town but frankly I think he painted himself into a corner and created a situation where it was going to be him or me.

Second of all, it is probably not completely obvious from the design notes Axel provided, but most items were not meant to pass randomly; merely in a manner the town couldn't readily decipher. A couple of them pass randomly, but not many of them. It was my intention in design to make people work to try to figure out how items passed, but the almost instant assumption by most players that items passed randomly combined with the fact that few items actually got used enough for anyone to be able to suspect anything else made that harder than I expected.
Third of all, I need to apologize for not making the "primary user" mechanic more obvious from the start. Axel and I talked about it; ultimately, I went the way I did in the PMs because I didn't want the game to feel too much like Hats Mafia Redux, which was running in Day 1 at the time, and was looking to be seriously abused by the fact that everyone knew their Hat. The fact that so few items were passed during the game was probably a direct result of this attempt to be conservative on my part, and it crippled the town's access to all its best abilities, so I screwed up there.
Fourth of all, yeah, I disappeared for 6 months, hey! Sorry about that. I will probably never play a game of mafia again.
Fifth of all, my thought on this game. 1) Look at the comments the game has garnered since it ended: no one seems at all interested in the flavor, or the game balance, or anything; they're all just talking about how ballsy the mason claim was. I am incredibly disappointed that the game was entirely decided by something that had nothing to do with my design. That's obviously very self-centered of me to say, but the fact that the game was decided by the same mason claim that two scum could have made in any game, seems very much a shame to me. I know it had to happen sometime, but it destroyed so much of what I had tried to put into this game that it felt like I had wasted several dozen hours of my life on what was going to turn out to be a very dull and simplistic game. 2) I made the game with the hope that people would actually be interested in their roles, and went to an extraordinary amount of effort to make sure that people were excited and interested in what was going on with their roles and in the game. So the fact that by the time I disappeared, 1/3 of the players had already replaced out is depressing.
As far as I can tell, nobody make any special effort to learn about the setting or what was going on with their roles, and all the usual suspects got lynched who normally do, with the exceptions of DYH and CC, who both got lynched because they didn't put even their normal amount of effort into the game (CC, I don't know why, and DYH, because he was sulky about having to make a cryptoclaim).
All in all, this game took me from adoring mafia to hating it; I can't imagine ever wanting to play with people who spare so little thought for the game that they don't even bother to experiment with the rules or do anything other than the same completely formulaic, thoughtless approach to the game they always have. And I certainly can't imagine ever wanting to design a game for people like that.
Yeah, it's late. I'm probably going way overboard with whininess. Props to Axel for keeping the game going, and props to SB, who put more thought into the game than any other player. If I offend anyone, know that I don't really mean any of it, and that I'm not talking about you anyway.:p
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
Yes, I was "sulky" about having to do a crypto-claim; if, in fact, you were concerned about the game playing itself on flavor, etc. I don't know why you would've allowed them in the first place - if anything else allows a game to be "formulaic" it's essentially a mass-claim on day one. You have no one else to blame but yourself for that, CP. The good news is it (cryptos) won't have the chance to ruin another game here.
Secondly, to say I didn't put any effort into the game is laughable. Go read our scum chat if you think we didn't try damn hard to win this game.
I'm sorry people didn't get all hung up on your flavor - yes, it was good, but when someone makes a move as bold and brazen as Loran and AI did, you should expect that to be the focus. If you had wanted flavor and mechanics to be the primary factor, you should have established that you only really wanted HP fans to play in it. At it's core, mafia is still a game not unlike chess.
Glad you're okay; wish you'd shown a little more tact upon your return.
DYH did try in this game. The Cryptoclaim crap he made was due to a misunderstanding that his role wouldn't be revealed upon death. If that was the case, his claim to be a ghost character who couldn't tell the town his survival ability ahead of time wasn't terrible.
As for CC, yeah, i have no idea what happened there.
All in all, this game took me from adoring mafia to hating it; I can't imagine ever wanting to play with people who spare so little thought for the game that they don't even bother to experiment with the rules or do anything other than the same completely formulaic, thoughtless approach to the game they always have. Errr what? You're a great mod CP, with one awesome game in the past (Douglas Adams). This game was not as crazy as that game, as instead of total wacky roles there was an item mechanic. What did you want people to do, treat the game as if it was Hats?
I'm still a bit confused how this game could've taken you from loving mafia to hating it. When I modded my game here (and my games on wifom), i never expected half of the results, and in SoIaF mafia, i was sheerly dumbfounded by how people ignored some crucial flavor (at one point a person claiming to be an 8 year old crippled boy claimed to be seduced by a woman at night, lol). But that always happens, and the fun of hosting a mafia game is that it won't go according to plan. It's like creating a world for others to play in. You're god, the players are men, and the fun is to observe how things happen. I don't get why you didn't like them here, but if that's the case you have little to blame but yourself, not the players.
I'm sorry you feel this way and hope you return to mafia eventually, but that post was just bizarre.

Wow, that's pretty weak CP. You quit the game for months and then come back sniping at the way people played it?
You can't ever Mod. a game with the expectation that it will unfold in a specific way (I mean, you can, but get ready for huge disappointment.)
There was nothing wrong with how people played this game. Nothing.

Third of all, I need to apologize for not making the "primary user" mechanic more obvious from the start.
I agree this was a mistake, but after Xyre's lynch there was no excuse for other specialists to not examine their own role PMs and figure it out (like Some One did) so I don't feel too bad about that. The part that I do feel was an issue was that even if it was clear who had what specialty they still didn't know what that meant, so townies had to make a blind decision about whether to pass those items to that player because we didn't even know what that would do. Say, for example, I thought CPE was town and CPE bothered to figure out he was a Babbling Beverage specialist. How could I possibly decide between giving BB to CPE and making Polyjuice without knowing what CPE could actually do with it?
The depth of this game is incredible. I never realized it was as complex as it actually was. Good job "masons," but better job mod(s) for making a game so ridiculously crazy.

I gotta agree with this. Since so many items in the game had the "this item is passed to another player when used" draw back, I thought the specialists simply would be able to use the items without the drawback.
So giving the horcrux elder wand (which we had) to DYH would've been great. It would've given us a second kill. Awesome.
But I (and i think so did the rest of the scum) figured that it basically would just make the elder wand a permanent ability-motivator. Which really wasn't THAT great for the scum, so we just never got around to it.

Win or lose thats the game.
Rafaelk - 3 (loran16, Stormblind, AlphaInsidious)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And so, after months of discussion, accusation and murder, the surviving heroes gather together for one final decision.

Things went pretty much as well as could be expected; I felt I was able to distance/trap pretty well while I was alive (all apologies to Ged, but the cost/reward of protecting Dagger and making myself look good for days was too tempting), and Dagger played absolutely solid until he just ran out of trees.

Psh, no worries. I'm just glad my death contributed somehow when I was obviously doomed from the start.
(wry grin)

I was talking about Chamber and MMoD, not your mason group. Sorry that wasn't more clear.
Really?

We'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

We'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

Its a shame that it took a gambit like this for people to realize that it was possible. Just look at how shady Loran was acting in the middle of the game and it was fairly obvious Grats guys.
To those alive in the end:
did you really think there were only 4 mafia in the game?
It had to be a mason gambit because both SB/Kraj and RafK weren't scum, which the masons had to be running a gambit.
It didn't matter. 2 scum and a neutral survivor, the scum automatically win just by claiming scum and both voting the same target and having me finish off that target. Either the game was over, or we could assume there was only 1 scum remaining.

Each Night you may choose to (1) make a Skiving Snackbox; (2) attempt to make a Trick Wand, for which you will need assistance from George; or (3) assist George with whatever mischief he might be up to.

[Remus is the recipient of Snape's Wolfsbane. Does not know this unless Snape's potions dry up (each potion lasts for a Day/Night/Day/Night cycle). If they do, Lupin must target a player. Werewolves cannot give or receive items while in Werewolf form.
-Starting Item: Time Turner, Wolfsbane

The effects of this potion last for 2 day/night cycles.

Caractacus Burke - Co-Founder of Borgin and Burkes, an extremely reputable business establishment if you do say so yourself.

[-Starting Item: None

Item in Possession: Marauder's Map

Bellatrix LeStrange -
Most of the people who have been enlisted into the Dark Lord's army have done so out of fear or avarice.
Wheeee!!!
Win Condition: Eliminate all who do not serve Lord Voldemort.
Item in Possession: Fawkes the Phoenix

As long as you're alive, if the mafia targets Sirius with the Avada Kedavra kill, you get a bonus kill.

You're unstoppable!
Win Condition: Eliminate all who do not serve Lord Voldemort.
You do not currently have any items.

Investigative abilities will investigate you as though you are Mad-Eye Moody, who was prevented from coming.

Riddle's Diary - Horcrux

Invisibility Cloak

bateleur - I know CP recruited him to help write some of the role PMs, and he did his usual impressive job.

Chimp, Frisbee + RB > Shield Hat. A lot better actually.
It should have been obvious come the last day the masons had to be scum, but given the survivor being alive it was over regardless.
Well played Loran and AI on that one BTW.
Logical Reasoning is dead; Long Live Stupidity
Logical Reasoning is dead; Long Live Stupidity

Logical Reasoning is dead; Long Live Stupidity
First of all: Unctuous Unction, and Unctuous Unction.
Mafia MVP BM Mafia
Mafia MVP Matrix Mafia
Secondly, to say I didn't put any effort into the game is laughable. Go read our scum chat if you think we didn't try damn hard to win this game.
I'm sorry people didn't get all hung up on your flavor - yes, it was good, but when someone makes a move as bold and brazen as Loran and AI did, you should expect that to be the focus. If you had wanted flavor and mechanics to be the primary factor, you should have established that you only really wanted HP fans to play in it. At it's core, mafia is still a game not unlike chess.
Glad you're okay; wish you'd shown a little more tact upon your return.
V/LA: 3/21-3/24 & 3/27-3/29
DYH did try in this game. The Cryptoclaim crap he made was due to a misunderstanding that his role wouldn't be revealed upon death. If that was the case, his claim to be a ghost character who couldn't tell the town his survival ability ahead of time wasn't terrible.
As for CC, yeah, i have no idea what happened there.

You can't ever Mod. a game with the expectation that it will unfold in a specific way (I mean, you can, but get ready for huge disappointment.)
There was nothing wrong with how people played this game. Nothing.
Lighten up.
I think this sums it up nicely.

She knows why.
