Oh, riiight. I remember that game. That was the one where more than half the town was cleared on Day two, and it was actually impossible to lose, right? I died after telling the town that, and then like two months later, it turns out that the town did end up losing, just because they couldn't think in a straight line to save their lives.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
Sorry, broken recruitment mechanic != poor town play.
The only critical mistake the town made is not paying enough consideration to the possibility that our only cop got recruited to the mafia and not playing conservatively to account for it. And even then, that mistake was basically made by a single townie.
I must agree with Hawkeye- Hyram and I played horribly in Lost. Didn't help that it was my first non-newb game with a rather broken setup in terms of daygame (I mean, no one really cared who got lynched that day as long as it wasn't themselves). Still, good experience
I don't play mafia enough here to participate in the nominations, but I'd just like to point that out
No, it really does. The only cop was a recruit. And we even recognised the possibility, but Cyan's error brought it to double-lifer vs cop. I still think given the relative play (e.g. me keeping Pod on the radar amd Kenji being hilariously useless for 9 days) the town should have realised, but then we're talking like 2 people on that last day.
When the only cop gets recruited by the mafia - game over.
We really don't need to re-hash the recruitment argument here after what went on in the Matrix and Discussion threads do we?
EDIT: Also, the double-doc ends up being a hindrance. Normal town assumptions are there's only one doc, so one ends up getting lynched minimum. UN-NK role was assumed to be the godfather given the other power balance. DotA was over-saturated with power on the town side, but that's not necessarily a good thing, and the mafia recruitment skews everything.
It's like the way I continue to believe that a "hidden" mafia player who doesn't know who the rest of the mafia are should actually count as a negative to the mafia in the balancing stage. They always seem to screw up the rest of the mafia even if technically it should be a plus to the mafia. But this stuff belongs in theory, not in this thread.
Maybe we can have one of those 'Overclans' for all of the mafia folk. I mean, if it works for gay people, why not for us.
Anyway, having been town in both Stereotype and DotA, and performed poorly in both, I can say without a doubt that the Stereotype town deserves 'Worst Performance'(I don't see why this category exists, particularly in an Award listing, but that's another story). The town performed fine, for the most part, in DotA. The mafia was able to recruit *anyone* they wanted, and the town had no clue whatsoever that this would go on. A town winning under that set of circumstances is virtually impossible. DotA is a prime example of this, because without that bit, the game was flatly a town blowout. In Stereotype, we just screwed up as a whole.
I think it'd be kinda fun to have official polls- use this thread to pull nominations and then do it that way? I think they give out nifty custom tags for overall site things like this - do you have the ability to do the same, Fade?
Lesurgo said it can be done, but he prefers that the polls be run like the rest of the Forum Awards, rather than just here in the Mafia forum. Which means I need to send a list of nominations (5 per category).
Also, I figured we should probably cut down on the number of official awards for the tags - I suggested just having a Best Town Player, Best Mafia Player, and Best Mafia Mod. Everything else, we can still do informally (non-tagged) here.
Best scum player would work better; less general than best mafia player, since the game is called mafia. Not that it makes a difference, Raf is a lock either way.

Right - I figured the name needed changing. What's better, "scum" or "non-town"?
I think that using the word 'Moderator' is going to confuse..everyone that doesn't play Mafia, because they'll misunderstand the context of the word 'Moderator' in that sense. Just naming it 'Best Mafia Game' and awarding it to the person that ran that game seems better. Especially since it's the same award anyway.
@Cyan: That makes sense to me. How about Best Mafia Host?
@Fade: I would think we'd want to include best overall, since some players excel regardless of role alignment. So, Best Mafia Player (Town, Scum, Overall) + the Best Mafia Host would be my suggestions.
I second that motion, though I think that some stipulation preventing one person from winning multiple awards should exist, since it's so few awards in total..because honestly, without hesitation, I would nominate DYH for every one of those awards.
I wonder if there's too much overlap between Overall and the Town/Scum awards. Cyan brings up a good point about the possibility of one person winning multiple awards.
Also, seeing as there's a Rookie of the Year in the main Forum Awards, I think we should keep the Best Newcomer award as well (should this also be renamed?).
Nominations list! This is just based on who people have voted for in the thread. Let me know if you have any other nominations for these categories. If we end up with more than 5 for any category, I'll run a poll to narrow it down.

Hmm, I'd like to remove myself from consideration for any of the custom titles. Cool idea, but I'll get along alright without one. Somebody else might appreciate them more than I would.

I think it seriously cheapens a victory if one of the top competitors declines to participate.
If you specifically don't want it for some reason, its fine, but personally, I rather lose at something than win through obvious charity.
That's well and good, Az, but can't you just decline to have the tag added if you win? No sense in pulling your name from consideration if the community thinks you're deserving.

Any more nominees for best scum player (or any other category)?
And have we decided whether or not we should include Overall, and just have it so that if you win Overall, you can't win Town or Scum? This likely means that if someone does happen to win Overall and Town/Scum, then the Town/Scum award would go to the person with the second-most votes, since I don't think we can wait until after the Overall poll is done before starting the other two.
Azrael> The admin guys can sort it out for you - I had my stuff hidden the year they brought in the stupid little trophies.
As far as nominations go, I'd like to nominate ZeDorkSlipeur for Best Scum. Stereotype Mafia being the best example if anyone wants evidence.
Also a quick tip of the hat to arimnaes' amazing falseclaim from Court Mafia. It actually took me several days to realise what incredible genius it was. Sure, it was funny, but it was also a huge strategic coup!

Can we just accept that DotA was kind of swingy?
Uh, it actually does, since the recruitment basically voids all that "effectively confirmed innocent" stuff, and actually turns it against the town.
Granted, the way it played out, we still should've won, but Cyan threw away our guaranteed victory and left the mafia a chance.
