In the aftermath of the destruction of human civilization, the machines created the Matrix. In its original form, humanity was offered paradise, a world without problems or conflict. It was rejected by humanity as too illusory, and failed as a means of control. In its third incarnation, the Matrix represented human civilization at its apex: the early 21st century. This form proved satisfactory at lulling the masses into complacency, with a few notable exceptions.
But between the first and the last version of the Matrix was a radically different reality. Version 2.0. Designed to reflect the varying grotesqueries of human nature, the machines combed the minds of humanity for their darkest nightmares, and brought them to life.
Although this version proved unsuccessful as a means of control, ripples of its existence still remain…
Centuries later, when version 2.0 was abolished and its memory all but forgotten, not long after a tenuous peace was at last achieved between man and machine, the Matrix began to evolve. Or more accurately, to devolve back to its previous manifestation. The perpetrators remain unknown. All that can be guessed is that the source code which governs the Matrix is being altered, and the transformation is accelerating with every passing hour.
Glitches in the programming are multiplying. Programs and humans alike are disappearing, never to be seen again. Everyone is watching their back. The fragile peace between man and machine has stretched to the breaking point, fractured by suspicion.
As the crisis mounts both within and beyond the Matrix, the machines have ordered the populace to evacuate to centralized locations near the center of the city. Many of the city’s more prominent denizens have been evacuated or confined by the machines within the Mega City Metropolitan Mall, and those humans who continue to risk entry to the Matrix have been known to surface there as well.
Early this morning, the thinly defended perimeter of the mall was breached from the inside, triggering a new wave of killings. Chaos erupted in their wake, and what little semblance of order remained has degenerated into mob rule as the scattered survivors seek to find those responsible.
As the ordered world of the matrix spirals out of control, certainties are in short supply. One of the few guarantees is that the fate of the human race is at stake, and the outcome will depend upon the choices of those who remain. In a world filled with illusion and deception, they must find the truth and clear away the lies that bind them.
The first day will begin shortly after role confirmation has been received from all players.
A Short Guide to Matrix Mafia
Words of advice-
1. Flavor isn’t everything, but I didn’t reduce it to irrelevance. The characters retain a modicum of continuity with past events in the canon of matrix literature. Those players whose knowledge extends beyond the trilogy will have a small advantage in that regard.
1B. Wiki is your friend.
1C. Free your mind.
2. This is still your grandmother’s game of mafia. Use the skills you’ve honed in previous games. The setup will punish sloppy play with a vengeance, so bring your best game. Remember, your best ally as both town and mafia is playing off one another’s behavior, not the setup or the mod.
3. Because the unexpected is the new expected, you should expect the expected.
SPECIAL RULES SECTION
1. You do not talk about anything even vaguely related to Matrix Mafia, with anyone. This includes your girlfriend, dead people, living people, random people on the site, random people off the site, Keanu Reeves, and your imaginary friend(s). You may only talk to people specifically designated in your PM, at the specifically mentioned times, until the game is officially ended. Violation of this rule will result in UGLY NASTY DEATH DEATH DEATH.
2. Editing for grammar and code purposes is allowed up to 3 minutes after you post. Anything else will result in an automatic mod-kill or replacement, depending on the situation. No warnings, besides this one.
3. Posting in large text is fine. Using images is also allowed, so long as forum rules would not prohibit them.
4. Be careful about paraphrasing your role PMs. And whatever you do, don’t quote them.
5. When in doubt, ask me.
6. Players who use the Agent Smith avatar will have their kill and vote-based abilities disabled.
7. You may target players on the replacement list with abilities.
7B. You may target players in limbo with abilities.
The spoiler below contains the role information for the dead and living players of matrix mafia. If you're reading through the thread for pleasure, click at your own discretion.
You open your eyes. You’re lying on your back, amidst what’s left of the Mega City Metro Mall. The first thing that hits you is the stench. You’d think digitalized blood and viscera wouldn’t smell that bad. Guess you were wrong. Somebody has a sick sense of realism.
When you sit up and look around, you’re struck by how strangely still everyone and everything around you is. Surrounding you, bodies, strewn everywhere, as if they'd rained down from the clouds. None moving, almost as though they were asleep. Any second now, they might wake up, just like you did, and start moving around. But you know they won’t. In the matrix, almost everything is an illusion. Everything except death. When someone dies here, it’s all too real.
You catch a glimpse of your reflection in a shard of glass, what’s left of the store window. A little blood-stained. Looks like a scratch, though you don’t remember getting it. Probably you could use a shave. Maybe they’ll have razors somewhere in here.
You pick yourself up, and walk out of the storefront. You’re the only thing moving. The whole mall is one big spiral staircase, with a glass pyramid roof opening up on the sky. Today, everything is pale and gray, full of clouds. The power is long gone, so all that’s left is the weak shaft of light falling from above.
You start walking, up. When they came, they came from below. If anyone else is left, that’s where they’ll be.
There’s a crunch of a boot on glass. A man in a tattered trench-coat steps out of the store-front to your left. One of the lenses of his sunglasses is knocked out. He looks at you like he thinks he sees a ghost. He looks like hell. You probably don’t look much better yourself.
You each slip a hand in your pocket, and start walking up.
At the top of the mall, there’s a final room. A glass floor, to let the light pass through. Beneath your toes you can see straight down, thirty-three stories, like you’re standing on air. Above, you can see white flecks of bird **** on the slanting window panes, and the reflections of two dozen other people.
You breath in deep. It’s time to start working your way out of this mess.

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'
His day one strike rate is amazing- he'll even tell you himself.
You sure you want to do that? I seem to remember a mafia mailman in sin city.

"Well now, Mister Azrael. We've all come here to play your game." Arimnaes looked to either side, then stared down through the glass floor. "Long way down," he said, rubbing his newly stubbled chin.
"You all realize that we cannot allow what has been occurring to continue, do you not? It is absolutely unacceptable. Someone here is going to be found responsible." His eyes scanned the room, hidden behind the lenses. "Why don't we start with you?"
Looks like Spoon is this game's Squiggler, arimnaes has a roleplaying restriction, Sutherlands is into votecounts, atlseal can't read, and, err... Why don't we start the usual flavor speculation ? You know, what kind of character could be scum and why. Can someone with good knowledge outside (and inside, too) of the trilogy make suggestions ?
No.

vote Axelrod.
Let me make this very clear to you: if you post like this the whole game, I am going to vote for you and refuse to remove my vote until you die.

How about we don't speculate on flavor until we have some dead bodies because doing so would reveal information about our own roles?
@Axel: do you know something about the series that is game-related that you would prefer not be public information? Why?
@Grakthis: give him a break. Az specifically asked about roleplaying ability in the signup. The odds of him having a role that specifically or indirectly causes him to post like that are high.

I'm just gonna say this. I've seen a lot of things in my time, and I've learned a lot of hard lessons.
Sharing information - nothing wrong with that. Might even save your life one day.
Asking the other guy to "share" information with you - whole different ballgame.

The boy scratched his head. "Who was that crazy bastard outside? Do I seriously look that bad? And where the hell are my Gucci sunglasses? Did any of you bastards take my Gucci sunglasses?!"
He calmed down. "Seriously, though, all this talk of Spoon's improbable existence makes me feel like this is going to be another 2000-poster."
After a second of scratching, he realized he'd forgotten something. "Oh, and ZDS, the majority of your assumptions strike me as, well... dumb. No offense. Arimnaes is as arimnaes does. And besides, our mutual friend Az hinted that roleplaying might be important, so figuring that it's a 'posting restriction' shows little understanding of what's really going on, eh?"
He waved at Grakthis before returning to his seat.
Anyways, for the real information (besides my minute observations in the last post):
I think arim's second post is indicative of how he, like myself, merely wished to post like that. I don't doubt that there are some roles that involve role-playing, but I certainly don't have one, and I doubt arim has one either.
CP: I think what Grak is saying is that, without any confirmed roles available, the only real information we have to work with is our own roles, and a skilled player may be able to pick up on some parts of a player's role by looking at that player's speculation. I myself doubt it's possible, but hey, we all deserve paranoia sometimes.
Dagger: Pod's right, there are more than just Smith; Smith is just interesting because he functions less like an Agent and more like a virus. Wiki says there are 13 specific agents.
Spoon: Unless you're Queen Elizabeth, your use of a plural "we" strikes me as odd. Care to elaborate?

Yup. My day one strike rate is amazing. I'd tell you myself, but I have DYH to do it for me.
loran beat me to the obligatory Azrael vote, boo hiss.
Re: arimnaes' (and Axelrod's?) roleplaying. It could be something he/they have to do. OTOH, arimnaes as scum roleplayed a pirate all game in Court Mafia as a tactic. It worked, too. I wouldn't use it as a basis for any conclusion whatsoever.
I imagine that there's a strong possibility that he's related to the whole 'there is no spoon' thing that already got brought up.
@Axel: I think there's a big difference between requesting speculation about roles and speculation about how the flavor of the movie may impact the game. If we don't do the latter, then why do we play themed games in the first place?
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.

"Hello?! Ah, hello.
WoW, What a mess, huh?"
Long thin arms brush and swipe at the tatteres remains of an ordinary, and very reasonably priced, grey business suit.
"Everyone ok? I mean nobody really hurt...err, hurt bad? Of course if you are hurt you'd be really hurt.
Sorry. I tend to run off at the mouth when I get scared.
Sooo. Anyone have any idea what caused all this destruction?
Wow! Long way down is right. Do you think it might be important for us to keep moving, maybe up to the top of the mall or stay here and try to figure out what happened and who might be involved?"
I don't appreciate your gesture of hostility, Mister Grakthis. I find it troubling and disorderly. Don't you?
There's little room for disorderly things in The Matrix.
Matrix? Like in the movies?, you know the Matirx movies with, oh who was that actor again, Christopher Reeves?. No, he was Superman. Ah... Keanu Reeves, yeah Keanu Reeves. Great movies. You a big fan or somethig?

I don't believe for a moment that Spoon's role will be so simple as to be defined by that phrase.
It's slightly weird to be playing a game where one player (by virtue of being a gimmick) effectively comes "pre-flagged" as special, though. It invites metagaming.
@Grakthis: give him a break. Az specifically asked about roleplaying ability in the signup. The odds of him having a role that specifically or indirectly causes him to post like that are high.
Maybe you've never roleplayed before, or maybe you roleplay with strange people, but when I used to roleplay, we didn't have to describe scenes or narate our own actions.
Not sure if anyone else has covered this yet, but let's say for example, I were to post "Well, agentis are likely to be scum" and the scum group is NOT agents, then I've just told them that I am also not an agent. And if someone responds to that with "I don't think the agents are likely to be in the mafia" then he's just dropped a HUGE hint to the mafia that he's an agent, for whatever that means.
That's giving free information to the scum. Something I am not interested in doing.
CP: I think what Grak is saying is that, without any confirmed roles available, the only real information we have to work with is our own roles, and a skilled player may be able to pick up on some parts of a player's role by looking at that player's speculation. My trackrecord for finding the cop as mafia is very good mostly because vanilla townies don't know how to stop screaming "I am not a power role" with every 3rd post.

Okay. So if I were to say the spoon boy probably isn't in the game and Spoon is a red herring, you would say...?
Neither of those, Loran, I just talk to someone that has a large animosity towards him, enough so that I read some tings games that Grak was in to see for myself.
@Grakthis: it's generally frowned on to triple post at MTGS, even in Mafia. Have some patience and respond to multiple people in one post, and people might actually read them all. It's also less frustrating for those people who don't like having to move from page to page every 20 sentences. Second of all, go read Sin City Mafia before you make any assumptions about how roleplaying must necessarily work around here. Lastly, the whole point of mafia is to parcel out information. We can do it deliberately, under the control of the town, or we can do it accidentally and give everyone a hard time and hope the best analysts are on the town's side.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.

Ah, my bad. I just took a look under that section of the wiki and realized that fact.
I personally have no problem with RP. When I did it in Blood Moon though, people kept bringing that up as a point against me. >_>
I am not sold on the whole roleplay idea. It seems like it can't be advantageous to the town as you will inevitably give away little bits of information about your character each time.
If someone (more worryingly - scum) is able to piece these tidbits together then it could be useful to them, especially once there are a few bodies piled up to compare against.

Do your own homework.
Let me make this very clear to you: if you post like this the whole game, I am going to vote for you and refuse to remove my vote until you die.
How about we don't speculate on flavor until we have some dead bodies because doing so would reveal information about our own roles?
@Grakthis: give him a break. Az specifically asked about roleplaying ability in the signup. The odds of him having a role that specifically or indirectly causes him to post like that are high.

I'm just gonna say this. I've seen a lot of things in my time, and I've learned a lot of hard lessons.
Sharing information - nothing wrong with that. Might even save your life one day.
Asking the other guy to "share" information with you - whole different ballgame.

I just wasn't sure if it was intentional or not. It could simply be an accident.

Mmm... such temerity. And on Day 1, no less. I would suggest being less openly hostile unless you find yourself a decent backing.
Anyway, what was that rule we came up with? Lynch All Lorans?

Re: Spoon. Um, yay gimmick players?
@Axel: I think there's a big difference between requesting speculation about roles and speculation about how the flavor of the movie may impact the game. If we don't do the latter, then why do we play themed games in the first place?

I don't believe for a moment that Spoon's role will be so simple as to be defined by that phrase.
It's slightly weird to be playing a game where one player (by virtue of being a gimmick) effectively comes "pre-flagged" as special, though. It invites metagaming.
Maybe you've never roleplayed before, or maybe you roleplay with strange people, but when I used to roleplay, we didn't have to describe scenes or narate our own actions.
We just had to stay in character.
You are dead on. And if you don't think it's possible, let me be the first to tell you that it's not only possible, but as scum I've picked up on things like that a dozen times.
My trackrecord for finding the cop as mafia is very good mostly because vanilla townies don't know how to stop screaming "I am not a power role" with every 3rd post.
In otherwords you're pissing me off. And i dont mind a lot of people.

If someone (more worryingly - scum) is able to piece these tidbits together then it could be useful to them, especially once there are a few bodies piled up to compare against.
