Which is not necessarily a good thing. AbbeyGargoyle was good at it, too, and it didn't help him much (it's even the contrary) :-/.
I thought it helped quite a bit, it's just that our day 2 lasted so long that people eventually got around to looking at me a lot quicker than I thought they would.
While pure logic isn't the town's best weapon in mafia, it is an important one nonetheless. Subjectively analyzing posts is the best/fastest way to try to determine someone's alignment, but logic is king when it comes to looking for connections between players and also for deciphering night actions to prove/disprove someone's claim.
For example, anyone who was lurking RotTK Mafia knows that, although his play had been somewhat scummy at times, the main reason Azrael was lynched on the penultimate day was because logic dictated he was scum. The vig had announced he was going to kill Azrael on the previous day, and Azrael had claimed to be a retaliatory killer (he and his attacker both die.) We went to night with 7 players, among them 2 scum. The vig was blocked that night. Now, if Az were town, the scum could've let the vig kill him, and die himself, and with the scum nightkill they could achieve a majority. But the vig was blocked. QED, Az is scum.
Yes that sounds reasonable enough. A lesson I learnt: if you're cop it's not a bad thing to claim
That's not entirely true. Generally in a "newbie or normal" game, it's okay once you've got some results worth sharing. Don't take roles for granted in "specialty" games, however. For example, there might be a daykiller. (see: Sin City)
Given that you were appearing to be the day's lynch, however, claiming was absolutely the right thing to do.

How do day kills work? Are they just PM'ed to the mod. And can they be roleblocked in any way?
It depends. Sometime they are PMed to the mod, and sometimes the player has to write something like "Daykill : Whoever". For some examples of day-kills, read "Mafia Mafia", "Sin-City Mafia" and "Cartoon Mafia" (I'm probably missing some).
Wouldn't that be giving away the role of Mafia? Guess you'd go for it once you're close to a lynch though.
Also I wanted to thank you guys (Zds, Cyan and DYH in particular) because you really made this a good learning experience for new players.
Cyan: your involvement helped understand a bit more a complex game; hope that you might reconsider your idea of quitting newb games.
Everyone has to move past Newb games at some point, and I'm sure that my time for such is now. When you become too experienced, you are actually a disservice to newb mafia. It's not easy for me to except 'I'm new' as a justified excuse for scummy behavior, etc, and there are certain elements of the game that I just take for granted. I enjoyed this game certainly, but, I definetely shouldn't participate anymore.
G&E Daykills aren't exclusively reserved for scum. Townies may have them too. Though if they're going to be the in thread type, they better have damn good reason, and aren't likely to see a new day. Also, some protections and RBs carry over to the day. (It depends on the Mod, and the number of day roles included, and you may not know in advance.)

Most of the day-vigs that I have seen employed have been suicide day-vigs which balances things out pretty well for the townie side or if it is a repeatable dayvig, I have seen a lot of Vig Vote: Someone which basically acts like a second lynch for the town.
