I believe that a more aggressive strategy is usually worthwhile early in the game. BabyJesus, for example, contributes to a lot more successful Day 1 mafia lynches than most players, because he doesn't give the mafia time to focus the town's attention on a player that isn't one of them.
On the other hand, giving out information indiscriminately is incredibly destructive to the town's goals, and BabyJesus does that a lot too. Probably just as well. You don't want to be known as having a playstyle that's too pro-town, or you'd never get away with being mafia.
BTW, my experience is that 'Scum is even slower and more deliberate in their actions than we are, even. BJ's attitude is more a result of his play at 'Tings.
What?! Look at the initial post; he is dead. Deceased. Kaputt. Indefinitely horizontal. In mafia games, you see, people are occasionally "killed off," and when that sad event occurs, he or she is no longer allowed to post, on account of rigor mortis and what-have-you.
'Welcome to Mafia Salvation', it said, 'Population: 3,660.' And someone, they never figured out who, had painted on the sign in red letters: '1,831 to lynch.'

Tings mafia has a few main characteristics that I see - very based around a few major players, not as based around post analysis as here, and very gambit-based and claim discussion-based. It also takes a ton of time out for jokes and that sort of thing. I didn't know BJ played there?
From what little I've seen of it, Magic Lampoon mafia is really, really weird, and a lot less based on mafia protocol than Tings or here.
I'm not really cognizant of other sites' playstyles.
Well, I don't know personally, but based on things BJ has said on 'Scum about where he used to play mafia and what it was like, I assumed that that style had come from there.

The thing is, the odds of actually lynching a mafia on day one are zero if you don't actually lynch someone. It took us AGES, AGES on end to lynch someone. That not only doesn't work, but it sure as hell isn't fun either.
I don't see it so much as a difference between sites as a lack of willingness to take risks. But whatever. Sidenote: I really must join mafiascum. And I've got an account on GreyLabyrinth from like years back if they haven't deleted it. Gotta do that.

@HR: You have no idea how difficult some of the mafias decisions were. We had a mafia cop in jcs, and we still suffered hugely from the town's reticence. We were playing around so many different possibilities that at any given point, I was wincing to find out what what going to happen once night ended.
I'm certain that distributing more info than necessary would have made our job much easier.
It would've also made our job easier too, you know. I don't think that you would've lived if you claimed Manute on day 1 or 2.

Heh. You'd hate playing on MT. Our day ones typically last about a hundred pages. The last game I played in was a quickie: it only made it to around sixty pages before we nailed a scum.

I would hardly have claimed Manute if I had claimed that early. If you read my rationale for claiming like I did a page or two back, you'll see that I was trying to trap Axelrod by partially claiming, which put me in a pickle once it didn't work. You can claim that I would like have been counterclaimed with many of my likely choices, but even then, I was the only mafioso from SC. Except for jcs, all the mafia members were honest about their name claims.

I don't think post counts are an accurate measure for that, you all spend so much time joking around that about 20 pages of that is spam.

I'd disagree with that assessment. 'Tings mafia has too many analysts to be dominated by only a few major players. 8-10 of the players in any given game on MT are top-notch players, every bit as good or better than myself. And 80% of the remainder have become hardened veterans in their own right.
In recent games, there has been a lot of gambiting and claim discussing, but only because they're easy methods of tripping up new players, and we haven't needed to take out the precision weapons in quite some time (or at least, I haven't lately, given my rate of attrition). When we get into full-on analysis mode, 'tingers can fill pages upon pages with PBPAs and vote/behavior analysis.

Yeah, Lampoon is probably most responsible for the influx of "spamming" on 'tings.

Obviously, you're the expert here, and I agree that there's tons of analysis, but from my experience there are more gambits on Tings than here. Even in slightly older games (vis. Alien Mafia) there was TONS of claims (I think like 10 people claimed d1) and gambits (the Dhalians can't be scum), and since then it's continued. And there are definitely a lot more gambits/role discussion than here, anyway.
The thing is, the odds of actually lynching a mafia on day one are zero if you don't actually lynch someone. It took us AGES, AGES on end to lynch someone. That not only doesn't work, but it sure as hell isn't fun either.
Okay, for the record, this Day 1 was the most enjoyable I've ever played, and I have played in a few quick games. Furthermore, you say it doesn't work. I got a lot out of analysing it, but I never got the chance to show it. The massive amount of discussion led to a number of contradictions and tells that I was able to use to detect a of couple scum. WoLG contadicted himself on day 4, but no one was paying attention. Not to mention the whole CF thing. You may not like it, but it does work for some people.
First of all, a huge thank you to Az. This was the most fun I've had in a mafia game. Roles and setup were very interesting and well thought-out.
That said, I think the game was unbalanced in favor of the scum. 6 mafia, 2 SK-types (CF & LJ), 2 other neutrals (Axel & Puzz), plus 3 townies who can turn scum, is a lot out of 24 players. Especially when the mafia has two roleblockers and an investigator. We caught some good luck, but we also made some incredibly stupid moves (e.g. failing to kill anyone night 3) and we still won.
CF the town MVP? He killed their two best roles! (DYH & MJM). The best move he made for the town was killing me, when he thought he was killing the doc! He played a great game, understand, but I don't think he helped the town more than scum, overall.
I'd give Axel the town MVP for waking up to be a great player in the endgame, after having lurked the whole first half. Honorable mention to CropCircles, who proved himself far too dangerous to keep alive.
CC - you're the only one who fingered me as scum. Any play advice you can give?

@JC: You made a lot of passive agressive attacks throughout the game. You had a couple posts where you attacked 4 or more players without placing many votes or foses. It smells of insincerity and made it easier to see where your allegience was once we had a couple confirmed innocents and a guilty Fade.
Other then that, you played fine, save for a few minor tells. When Fade was killed, you said something along the lines of "Good job...someone." Its usually good to avoid comments like that, as they can be telling too.
And I think you're giving the town too much credit. Most of the neutrals leaned pro-town, and the scum had Manute and Shredder to deal with. You guys played great, considering. (well, save for that missed kill)

Oh, and for the record, THERE WAS A PATTERN IN THIS GAME.
Behaviour. Accusations, tells, and the like. Difference in playstyle, once again. Sorry I made your job harder, though.
