This is the game thread for Shaman Mafia. Here's a reminder of the game description:
In the forests of Moha'ra, the village of Kal'at is home to a tribe of Shamans. For many years, the Chief of Kal'at had been the protector of a sacred artifact, the Talisman of Iao, known to grant its possessor great spiritual powers.
Late in the afternoon of the summer solstice, the Chief's home was attacked and he was fatally wounded in the process, beyond the help of the Shamans' healing powers. As he lay dying, he recounted the story - someone had cast a powerful spell to render the Chief blind, attempting to steal the Talisman. But the Chief had secretly entrusted it to someone else the night before, due to a vision he had received foretelling of the event. Without the Talisman, he was vulnerable to attack, and the perpetrators had tried to forcibly extract the location of the Talisman before fleeing.
Although the Chief could not see who his attacker was, there was no doubt that this was the work of False Shamans, practicers of the dark faith. "There are some among us who have strayed... and they are still after the Talisman... Protect it at all costs... It must not fall into their hands..." The Chief's message was clear; no matter what, the True Shamans must not let the False ones take the Talisman, and they must kill the False ones to eliminate the threat.
Unfortunately, the natural balance has already been disturbed, and a mist has broken out upon the village, rendering many of the Shamans' abilities useless. They must use whatever powers they have remaining to protect the Talisman.
Each day, the Shamans will convene to select one person by majority vote, then spend the day performing a cleansing ritual. The selected person will die, but the ritual will show the true nature of that person's soul.
Rules
1. All votes and unvotes must be in bold. Unvotes are optional when changing your vote.
2. Once a player reaches majority, unvoting will not prevent the lynch.
3. Daytime will last a maximum of one week. At the end of day, the player with the most votes will be cleansed. In the event of a tie, the last vote or unvote will not be counted.
4. No posting at night. If need be, I will lock the thread.
5. No communication outside the game unless your PM allows it.
6. No discussion of the game outside of this thread (except for those covered by Rule 3).
7. No posting when dead.
8. No editing or deleting posts. Avoid double posting.
9. No quoting any PMs from the mod. Paraphrasing is acceptable.
10. Nighttime will last a maximum of three days. Unused abilities will be ignored.
11. If you will be gone, please inform me in advance. Missing players will be replaced after a week, or simply mod-killed.
12. Violations may result in mod-kill. Severe or unsportsmanlike violations may result in being blacklisted from future games.
This game will be starting at Night. Night 1 will end on Saturday, April 30, or when all night choices have been made.
Please confirm your PMs as soon as possible. You can confirm here, but I prefer you confirm by PM, sending me your night choices as well. If you are choosing NOT to use your ability, please indicate that rather than leaving me guessing.
Day breaks. Although the Chief's recent death has put everyone on guard, it apparently was not enough to keep all of you safe. You find musashi brutally murdered in his house. He was a Warrior.
The Chief's words still echo in your minds. "The Talisman... Protect it at all costs... It must not fall into their hands..." There is a lingering sense of urgency, but you know that the task will not be easy. Who knows what the False Shamans have in store?
You all convene in the village center to discuss the matter at hand.
[NOTE: For those who still haven't figured it out, protection of the Talisman is the town's ultimate goal. DON'T let it leave the hands of the True Shamans.]
It is now Day 1. It takes 10 votes to lynch.
Day 1 will end on Friday, May 6th.
lol swinkee, random vote: Urban Druid cuz my D20 said so.
Anyway, there was only one Kill, so that means we either got a lucky Doc and an SK or just one Mafia. I am gonig to assume just one mafia from the set up. I really cant think of someone who would fit well as a serial killer, and it would make it that much harder for the town.
One other thing, am i right to assume that, for the mafia to get the talisman, they need to kill the person who has the talisman?

Calm down there black adder...... (another cunning plan eh?)
I really dont think that this will work. Remember, the "mafia" are false shamans. They are shamans to, so i would think that they would also get shaman subtypes as well. Which would make this absolutly useless, because they aready know their own types.

So we have "only" one death. Is that an indication of some kind of protection? Typically in a 20 person game (at least every other one on this site) there is another killing group besides the Mafia, usually a SK. Maybe we don't have one in this game, or maybe someone else was targeted, but lived.
This could be a tough game to crack. No easy "theme" from which to leverage roleclaims or trap mafia. I get the feeling that anyone could be anyone. Oh well, I guess we have to do it the old fashioned way.
No random vote. (Though I'm tempted to go for Armlx, just to get it over with.)

Ambush Krotiq makes me laugh so much. I keep rereading the card and it keeps not having Flash. In what sense is this an ambush again? I just have visions of this huge Krotiq poorly concealed in some bushes, feeling slightly sad that his carefully planned ambushes never seem to work.
Anyone minds if I suggest a cunning plan(tm) instead of random votes ?
Simply enough, I think that each of us belongs to a different shamanic class, corresponding to cop, doc,... However, on the contrary of standard games, the mafia doesn't know what the name is for cop, neither for doc,...
Giving the complete name could give sufficient hints for the mafia to guess and hide, but just giving a letter in a certain position of the name should be almost useless to them.
I'd suggest that each of us claims, for example, the third letter of his shamanic name. This way, we will force scums into partial claims that may bite their meaty parts later, without giving anything away to them.
Objections ? Suggestions ?
This is actually an interesting idea. We don't know that the Mafia each have individual subtypes, so this might put them into a minor dilemma. It they do have subtypes, them we probably haven't lost anything. I doubt they are going to be figuring anything out from one letter.
This might be against the spirit of the "no quoting PMs" rule, however, so I would like a clarification from fade that we could do something like this before I actually did it.

Are we to assume the False shamen knew who and what they were attacking? or was it random do you think. (maybe a n00bish question, but I wanted to participate).
If it is the talisman, then yes, they know/want/need the talisman, and it is our job to stop them.
Musashi, on the other hand, was most likely just a random killing by the mafia. It was night one, and they (most likely) have no information. They probably took a guess on who the Doc would protect, and they killed someone else.

Puzzle, I have one question about your plan. Do u mean like for example, the third letter being L for false or A for shaman assuming there is actually someone set as a false shaman? Because the thought occured to me that we may accidentaly group together people that have no connection, especially if the persons third letter is a more common letter, I.E. e or a.
Well, finally this is up...sucks that we likely lost a vig...as warrior suggests. However, I'm okay with the plan (Go puzzle, lol...always the same style) as it doesn't seem really...bad. And it will likely trip up some mafia.

ok, I guess i misunderstood what ur plan was. But I just can't get it out of my head that we may end up lumping large groups together that aren't all meant to be lumped together, which could lead to bad votes and such
As the rules state, PM quoting is not allowed, but paraphrasing is. Providing a single letter from your PMs does not count as quoting (just don't start spelling out your entire PMs one letter at a time :p)
As for lynching the Talisman holder, you'll find out what happens if you do so.
Hmm... another cunning plan from Puzzle eh? Doesn't seem like it will hurt us, it may even trip up a mafia member or two, so I'll say go ahead with it.
Yeah Ok I'm down. Keep in mind this could be a mafia ploy but I'll give puzzle the benefit of the doubt for now as it doesn't seem like it will help the mfia find our power roles. (Side note: Everyone in the USA needs to go out and see HItchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I bit off topic but importaant enough to plug into any conversation) Yeah so lets do Puzzle's thing. Who wants to start?

"A little sincerity is a dangerous thing and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal."
I highly doubt this will get us anywhere, but fine. whatever.
Judging by the setup and the fact that this is a specialty game, I propose:
One of us has the totem and the mafia is trying to kill the person with the totem. There are no SKs because it doesn't make aesthetic sense (they would be bad shamen). The mafia have to kill only one person to win, which makes the state of the game very fragile in comparison to that of regular mafia. To correct for this, I propose the totem gives powers (such as a set amount of kill protects) and can be passed around by whomever bears it. Passing it to the mafia, of course, = game loss.
There is more than one mafia, as stated by fadeblue's intro.
I agree the totem can most likely be passed around, but I doubt that all the mafia have to do to get it is kill the person who has it. That would be a little too random (can you say night 1 mafia win?) I suppose Sparrow's idea that the talisman gives some amount of protection could be true, but even then, if the mafia go after someone who doesn't die, they pretty much keep going after that person and eventually it's game over.
Seems somewhat more likely that the mafia win if we "give" it to them, but they can't get it themselves unless we are all dead. If the mafia kill the person with it (likewise if we lynch the person with it), it probably passes to another via some undetermined mechanism.
And my letter is....."E" Ta Da!

I actually had another thought that the talisman floats around randomly (thus making it harder for the mafia to pinpoint) but that doesn't resolve the "if they randomly hit that player, they just win" issue. Which is why I still think they don't get it if they kill the person with the Talisman. We are supposed to be able to keep it if we play correctly.

Eh, I would think that them killing the Talisman holder would merely result in an advantage for the mafia, like a sleeper crossing over or something...

Ok, so it seems that the plan is to name the third letter: ok mine is E.
So wait.... ok Sparrow got role-blocked? what do you mean?
like you tried to protect/investigate(hypotheticaly) someone and but someone else canceled it?
and you mentioned 2 mafia, do you mean only 2 mafia members or two groups of mafia? cause two groups would be overkill!
Well, we cant really tell for now. We have to wait for tomarrow night, see what happens then. But i seriously dout the two mafia groups. They way the game is set up, with the "False Shamans" being ONE group, there really isnt anyone else for the second group.

axelrod: if somebody is h olding the totem and attacked, they can pass it to somebody else before the mafia attack them again. i really can't think of a more likely and balanced scenario than the one i'm talking about.
i meant more than one mafia member, not more than one mafia. the presense of "false" shamans indicates only one kind of badguy, though multiple mafia isn't impossible (although that should mean two kills per night, which is pretty hard on the town and didn't happen last night).
someone place a binding ward on me so i couldn't do anything last night.
Yeah, don't really have much to comment on at this time, except perhaps to nod in agreement with the notion that the talisman/totem/whatever has to give some sort of protection. *nod*

This may not have been a very good idea for the town, Puzzle. The mafia may not be able to pick out which role is which, but they can certainly pick out who the unique townie roles are, and target them.
I'm getting a bad feeling about this. I'll reveal that my third letter is a vowel, but no more than that at this point, unless requested to specifically and persuasively.
Also, random vote Armlx just for fun. I'm getting a restless kind of feeling about him, like it's about time we got on with the day one lynch, get it over with ;).
