The little lady is a bit curious about how I used to spend some of my high school free time. I would love to DM a short adventure for her but I'm not even really quite sure what the game is like these days after 14 years. Any suggestions on where to start? Can I still run the Temple Of Elemental Evil?

Wizards actually just re-released a bunch of AD&D materials, if you're interested in that.
Currently D&D 5th Edition is going to be coming out soon, the final 'beta' playtest ended a couple weeks ago, so you can expect to see D&D Next sometime soon.
Honestly, though, I prefer Pathfinder, which is based on the D&D 3.5 rules (although I didn't get into it until a while after the split).
Yeah, D&D has changed since the 2e days. People now do not even know what I am talking about when I mention THAC0, lol. As Jay said there will be a 5e soon, although you can get a lot of the older resources as PDF's now if you wanted to play a previous edition. Pathfinder seems to have a pretty decent following, while a lot of other once "mainstream" tabletop RPGs have mostly disappeared. I recently picked up a kickstarted one called Numenera and I love the rules and setting.

I will always firmly stand by the belief that Magic is a game first and a collectable second.

The best addition to Tabletop gaming, though, is Roll20.net. If you have the ability to connect your computer screen to your TV, it's a pretty great experience and people don't need to be crowded around the table anymore.

I know roll20, and it is great for online games, but if I was playing with friends at my home I would rather be at the table personally.

I used to feel that way, but the logistics of set-up just became to problematic. I like the idea of sitting around the table, playing, but giant graph paper maps are a ***** to put together for pathfinder, especially in Rise of the Runelords when there are so many large, complicated areas.
Ah, yeah, back when I actually got to play we never dealt with graph paper, minis, or the like. We just played and rolled the dice and had a good time.
