"Jonas, another Cappuccino with an extra shot, please."
The morning rush had commenced at precisely 8:00 on the frosty Monday morning, and Jonas thanked his luck that he was over the espresso machine rather than out in the college studying. The semester had finished for the year, and the cafe had him on most days a week. Twisting the steam wand to achieve a simple froth, Jonas handed the Cappuccino to the customer with a faint smile and a thanks for service.
Emilie, a young french girl on staff, turned away from the register and smiled at Jonas. Her accent had charmed many a customer, though Jonas knew she was really a shy thing.
"That was quite the rush Jonas! How do you keep up with it?"
Media is not making me steal. But in a way is like the story of the very hot girl with the short skirt teasing the old sick guy with a history of rape.
Flirting Jonas thought to himself. Never was my forté...
He blushed and ran his fingers through his hair. He looked around the cafe searching for anything to distract him from the social situation before him. The customers were all sitting happily on their computers, reading, and sipping their drinks. Nothing. Here goes... he thought as he tried to think of something clever to say in the fleeting seconds he had to speak before sounding strange.
"We would all be lost without you Emilie." Jonas said, with a smile and hint of sarcasm.
Jonas met Emilie on his first day of work at the coffee shop. There was always something about her that he couldn't place, but he could never come up with the courage to ask her out on a date, or any activity outside work.

Emilie paused, her eyes searching Jonas's eyes. Evidently, she found something as she winked at him and again punched him in the arm. Laughing, she brushed aside the comment.
"Well, you certainly need me around."
Emilie held her hand out to the Espresso machine, the steam wand causing the milk to overflow all over the bench.

"It's the machine's fault, not yours." Jonas said, attempting to provide some sort of comfort to her. She seemed a bit put off by the accident with the machine.

"Thanks Jonas, I guess I'm letting my family issues affect my work life. Not really the look I was going for."
Emilie's cheeks glowed a slight red, obviously embarrassed by her explosive reaction to the faulty machine. She breathed quite rapidly, and looked quite shaken by the event.
"Would you watch the counter for a minute? I really need to go pull myself together."
"Oh yeah, you do what you need to do, i'll handle everything for now." There were a few times on his old shift when his co worked woudl never show up, so Jonas knew he could do it.
"You know, if you need to take the rest of the day off, you could. I promise I wouldn't tell the manager." Jonas said with a wink.

"They don't, but that'd be because of your top lattes. Really, they're really good. You should throw your coffee into the competitive ring - I hear there are some nice scholarships hidden in there amongst all the coffee grounds."
Emilie stepped towards the washing sink and began to rinse shot glasses.
"What are you up to this week Jonas? On the prowl for the ladies?"
Jonas blushed and said with a smile, "As always, this week though I have an exam, but I still think I'll be able to make it out one of these nights for some fun."
Jonas was interrupted by an impatient woman at the counter demanding a pastry.
"Anyways, what are you up to? Maybe we could do something." Jonas managed to get out, despite mounting nervousness.

He smiled.
"I guess mindless labor just comes naturally to me." He said with an awkward laugh.
"Come on Jonas, we both know I do all the work around here."
With a wink Emilie gave Jonas a small punch on the shoulder.

"Let's get this cleaned up." he said, obviously puzzled by the mess.
Jonas looked at Emilie before starting to wipe up the small puddle on the floor.
"I thought this was fixed only last week! Hopeless!"
Turning to Jonas, Emilie suppressed another outburst.
"Sorry, Jonas. That's the third time this month - you'd think that the amount we pay for this damned thing to be fixed, that it would stay as such."
Hiding her anger beneath a cheery facade, Emilie turned to the register and served another few customers.
"Guess I need you around huh? I might have exploded otherwise..."
Emilie's cheeks glowed a slight red, obviously embarrassed by her explosive reaction to the faulty machine. She breathed quite rapidly, and looked quite shaken by the event.

"And you leave you to run this place into the ground?"
Emilie flicked her hair out of her eyes as she returned Jonas's wink.
"Besides, I like spending time here. On my shift with you."
"They never stop coming do they?" Jonas remarked to to Emilie once the customer had his drink.
