This quest is a 1 on 1 quest between me and another player. I need someone who is willing to post long and intricate posts, willing to enjoy more exploration and character development, as well as plot development, than fighting, and is willing to play a more unique approach to RPing than what is usually found here. I also need someone who can post at least once a day, preferably more, so we can move this quest fast. This is a preparatory quest for at least two more quests and, potentially, a World Project.
This quest is mostly going to be first person on my end. It'll be done somewhat like a flashback. Which means I'll be putting some emotions out there, and somewhat modding what your character thinks. Please, just work with me, it's for a cause.
There is no background for this quest. This quest is creating background. For whoever signs up, please write a paragraph describing your character's background (a normal one, please, based in late 18th century France), including a quick description of what they look like. That is all.
Leon Benton, age 27, has lived a good life. He grew up the son of a shoemaker in Marseille, working as his father's assistant when needed, but his restless mind didn't keep him there; he had a talent for working with tools, but after making shoe after shoe, he wanted to do something more than just make things that people walked all over. His interest turned to music, and he developed a penchant for violins. When he grew to be a man, he saved his money and moved to Italy to apprentice as a violin-maker. He was trained well, but he couldn't break the pack in Italy, so he moved back to France and opened his own shop. Well, not his own shop, but he did move in with a friend of his father's, an owner of an antique shop--his mechanical skill allowed him to help restore older items, while he worked on his violins on the side. He has been hoping to hit it big ever since.
Leon stands a tall 5'10", with a slightly thin build and fair skin, except for his hands, which are his bread and butter. He often wears a simple white shirt with as little lace as possible, with a dark blue jacket and black pants. He once had a passing fancy in fencing, but he can't swash a buckle or two. His face is usually serene, with flowing brown locks that he usually just keeps pulled back, to keep out of his face. He wears a dark blue hat usually.
Today ended up being an interesting day, regardless of how it began. I refer, of course, to the disappointment of what was to be my best work yet. It was an exquisite instrument, one to rival the work of my former master. Delicate curves and beautiful staining, if I do say so myself. It would have looked fit for an angel, if only I had reinforced the neck enough. It snapped in twain when I tried to play it. I will know better next time. As I left the shop, disheartened, to procure more lumber, stain, and lacquer, I overheard an interesting story...
Slightly irritated by my newest and greatest disappointment, I tighened my belt and went up to the top floor of the shop, where my partner was snoring peacefully again at the fire. Lucky bastard, he only gets business a few times a day, and can charge exorbitant amounts to pay for this sloth. I've had to toil for hours over a broken violin.
Heading out onto the street, I head toward the local lumberyard. It's a bit of a hike, being a few blocks away, but I never minded the walk. It wasn't raining today, or at least it wasn't when I left. This time I would get a few extra blocks to get it just right--even if it would weigh down my back.
... As I walked, I noticed a cluster of women on the sidewalk. This was an interesting occurrence in and of itself. Usually the old hens converse in the chapel, or perhaps in their homes. But they were talking on the street like men. And it was an angry conversation...
I walked back over to them, curious as to what they were chittering about.. I tried to keep my distance, preferring not to get dragged into another argument I had nothing to do with.
...I overheard them talking about some famous scientist a few towns over. Apparently he had been bragging that he was close to some major scientific breakthrough, or some such.
Curiously, I moved a little closer, trying to catch his name, at least. I wasn't about to go look for this new scientist, but it certainly sounded interesting.
...The name was hard to catch. They seemed to have glossed over that part of the story. I did learn, however, that he was in the town of Arbois, only around twenty miles away. It was mildly exciting to hear that such a breakthrough would happen so close to home.
Despite myself, my curiosity got the better of me. Twenty miles, hm? Too far to hike without a snack to bring, but perhaps I could borrow a horse, or catch a ride on someone's carriage; otherwise I would probably just spin right back around and head home to pack a lunch. That made me smirk. My violins could wait. Perhaps this advancement could aid me.
It was curious. However, it was already late in the day. It'd have to wait for another time. While I had initially thought that the violins could wait, I recalled that I was behind on my rent for the month and would have to work. I could visit another time.
